Decided to do the legendary (albeit at this time historically inaccurate but most of us are a few decades late since these legions where raised until around 50 and 40 BC) Lost Legion Hispania.

Accepted and added!

Lovely sheet, very nice indeed.

Though in answer to your comment, you are correct. In fact, Legions weren't even recorded - I don't think - as permanent bodies until the Marian reforms. However, I can't expect people to go and learn the epic and complex saga that is the Roman Republic's military evolution, so I think our current mixture of pre and post Marian reforms style Legions will work fine. I certainly am not offended by any historical inaccuracies, because I've said from the start that this RP will be light on the history. That is to say, it is "loosely" based on the events of the time, so that things can remain simple and accessible to all.

Rome isn't currently holding land in Illyria, as far as the RP is concerned, however this is no problem. I will have it, so long as you agree, that your Legion and its supporting forces are occupying the slim areas of coastline historically held by the Republic during this time period. The ports of Epidamnos, Apollonia and Corcyra, I believe they were in ownership of, but the land beyond is held by otherwise hostile savages in need of taming. This way, I haven't got to start slicing the map up further.

But anyway, nice work and welcome aboard!

Ooooh, I'd like to at least read along- if not join in myself. Either will be fine, but this is a simple enough one for me to wrap my head around xDI will admit to being new to nation roleplays however, so that is certainly a thing. Fan of Rome though- but definitely not a history teacher!

You will be fine, one would need to be totally stupid to mess up their participation in this NRP.

If you feel you would be able to narrate a battlefield, with your legion being pitched against an enemy, then that's good enough by all accounts.

It's up to you entirely, however, if you want to join or not.

Sounds good to me.

It's great to see so much interest. This should be a fun RP. Great work, LancerDancer.

Many thanks. I am excited about getting this under way - which will be soon.

Mei dei! So many other people! Will get started on my sheet ASAP.

I look forward to seeing your finished product.
The RP will be starting shortly, either today or tomorrow depending on my free time.

However, I will make it known now that I will most likely be unavailable from Wednesday to Saturday, as my employer is sending me off to Scotland to look into a few things. Depending on how much time I get in my hotel, I might not be able to post. This should not be a problem, as my early role is confined to giving out the orders, and allowing the players to carry them out. However, in case a dispute comes up, or people need direction and guidance, then I would ask for a temporary co-GM to stand in for me during those few days.

Their authority would be limited to keeping things moving, should they grind to a halt for whatever reason. That person would need to be sensible, and preferably have some experience in GMing.

If no one volunteers, then unfortunately you'll need to wait until I return, which should be Saturday evening.
Once I put up the first IC post, there will be a 24 hour grace period for new and existing players to finish their legion sheets, but after that time, the RP will be considered closed until the next game turn. This is to say, the RP will only accept new players when a new turn begins (to prevent late joiners from delaying the end turn process).

Players who complete their sheets during the 24 hour grace period, will have their orders added to the existing first post.
If anyone has any questions, now would be a good time to ask them.

The first orders have been issued.

LordZell, you need to finish your origins before I can issue you your mission.

Posts can be written in any style you guys want - be it from the general's perspective, or a neutral perspective (as if reading a history book!), or from the perspective of the front line soldiers. Or a mixture of the three. It's up to you guys, really, I have no preference.

There will now be a 24 hour grace period for existing/new players to get up/finish their legion sheets.

EDIT: Your missions can be resolved in as many posts as you want. Just bear in mind that some players might like to drag theirs out, and if there isn't a two thirds majority who have finished, then you may find yourself waiting for some time for your next mission if you finished the previous one in say one post.

Oh gosh. I'm sorry, this seemed like such a brilliant idea for me to do, but I only have five minutes to sit down and write at any one time and I can hardly cram writing a giant post into my schedule. Agh. My apologies for thinking I could do this.

I do not expect people to have to write gigantic posts. My first IC post was large because it contains loads of information essential to all of the players. Truely, so long as each post progresses your mission, I'm not bothered with how long it is. Within reason, of course. No one liners, or anything of the kind, but a couple of paragraphs here and there should suffice nicely. On the other hand, players are free to make their posts as large they wish - it's all down to individual preference, really.

Still, if you do not think you are able to join, then that's okay. Thanks for showing interest anyway.
On another note, Rome has a shortage of legions! We're going to be in real trouble if things get volatile in the north.

It's not too late to throw a sheet up is it? I've been debating about joining this one just because this period in Roman history is one of my favorite periods in all of history.

Nope, so long as you get it up within 24 hours, you'll be included in this round of missions.

I've had to edit the map, because I put Macedonia in completely the wrong place *face palms*.

Changes are:

1) Moved Macedonia to its right location.

2) Province of Apollonia is now under Roman control (will not interfere with thorgili, as it's already been stated his men own the city)

3) Thracia has been included in light blue, just above Macedonia.

Go back and read the section on battles, in the original OOC post.

I also urge all other players to ensure they have read the OOC post before playing, as per the standard of any role play since the dawn of man.

Good job, I'll get working on your mission right away.

EDIT: Your mission has been issued.

SECOND EDIT: The chief settlement of Liguria is Genua, modern day Genoa. I have updated your mission to include this.

Let me know if I need to change anything.

Legion Name

Legion VIII: Spurii Romanae β€œThe Bastards of Rome”

Legion Banner: A a black two-headed wolf on a red background.

Spurii Romanae

Sub-Legion I
"Spurius Nouam"
New Bastards

Principes: 1350
Triarii: 750
Velites: 1200
Equestrians: 1200
Total Soldiers: 5,700

Sub Legion II
"Veteres Spurium"
Old Bastards

Hastati: 1200
Principes: 1250
Triarii: 1250
Velites: 1000
Equestrians: 400
Total Soldiers: 6,000

Legio Legatus

Name: Quintus β€œSulpicius” Cursor

Legatus Age: 45

Legatus Origins:

Quintus Cursor was born as the bastard son of Marcus Sulpicius Cilo, a powerful senator in Rome. Cursor was raised by his mother, Sulpicius’ chambermaid, and was often ignored by his father in favor of his legitimate children. Cursor grew up in the Sulpicius household as something of a pet for his half-brothers and sisters. This treatment from his own flesh and blood led to a bitter attitude towards most of Rome’s elite. The rage he felt inside boiled over when he was seventeen. After constant mistreatment from his oldest half-brother, Tullius, Cursor attacked him and permanently disfigured his face. Sulpicius nearly had his own son killed, but a pang of guilt of his abuse of the boy lead for him instead to opt for banishment. He purchased a commission for the boy and he joined the VIII Legion as a low-level centurion. Cursor saw the military as a path to better his status in the world and to get back at his family. Campaigns against barbarians in the north of Italy showed Cursor’s merit as a commander. He was tough but fair on his men, and he pushed them to be better. He quietly advanced through the ranks of command over the years. Now Cursor commands one of the toughest and finest legions in all of Rome. He recruits those that are not desirable in other legions and turns them into warriors. His bastard status, his reputation as a tough commander, and the rumors of his battlefield actions have created a mystical aura around him. He is the Bastard of Rome.

It was a beautiful read, and exactly what I'm looking for.

Well done, that's seriously some good work right there.

If anyone is in doubt over how to address this RP, AmongHeroes has pretty much hit it on the head. Though that's not to say any of you cannot pursue your own styles. At the end of the day, so long as I can understand what is happening, then you'll all be fine.
