The Mediterranean Sea, Nowhen

The Cradle of Civilization, where the first great powers of the world came to be. Over the aeons, this region has nourished the peoples and cultures that thrived on its bounty. It has seen the might of nations like Egypt, Greece, Rome and more.

But now, something has changed. From all corners of Antiquity, many of the greatest and most powerful civilisations have been thrown together into a new Mediterranean. Once again, their people and cultures must battle for dominance over this ancient sea - only the strongest will survive. Who will build an Empire to stand the test of Time?
- Essentially, the idea is that each RPer will play the part of a leader of a famous and powerful nation or civilisation from the past (pre-Renaissance).
- For some unexplained reason, many of these civilisations have been flung together into a new Mediterranean.
- Important Note: None of them remember the account of history in our timeline.
- As a nation's leader, Rpers will guide them down a path of interaction with other powers, whether this be through warfare or trade.
- There may also be city-states - minor powers which I will control, and that RPers can befriend or conquer (rather like the city-states in Sid Meir's Civilisation 5)
- There are also resources and trade routes, needed for certain units
- Casual or above standards, I'm not too strict. Just no one-liners please :D

The Map

This is the map I think it would be good to use if this goes ahead. RPers would choose a few territories to start in, and expand from there.

Nation Sheet

Ruler Character Sheet

NOTE

About trade routes and resources. Do people want actual resources around the map that you can trade, or would you prefer to make up what resources you have and use trading as an extra aspect to the RP rather than as a crucial factor? If more people want the latter, I think the number of traits allowed should be reduced to 1 unless someone has some more ideas for those.

Thanks :D

Putting this here to save space. On the topic of resources, I think that each quadrant(separate white blocks) should have a boost to a certain resource. For example, a quadrant located where we would expect mountains would have an increased amount of stone and bronze(or later on iron). Same with forests, increased production of lumber if the player owns a lumber camp in that quadrant. There would also have to be specialty resources like quartz, sandstone, and etc. The specialty resources could then be used for trade if the player is lacking certain resources.

In a sense, our production of resources wouldn't be limited to just the resources we own in certain quadrants. So, we really have the ability to produce all the resources in all quadrants. But, if it is not specifically stated that a certain quadrant has a certain resource how would we know what is there? To answer this, I believe we should implement a little something called surveying. We could survey quadrants we own(or don't own) to see what resources exist there. The results of the survey could be determined by a dice roll. 2 dice of 1 to 5 could be used to determine if the surveyor had found bronze. If the surveyor is skilled in locating bronze(located successfully more than five times) then the fail rate is lower. For example, say the fail rate for an unskilled surveyor is 4 out of ten. If he is skilled, then the fail rate will be 3 out of ten. This means that he has a 70% chance of finding bronze over the before 60% chance. That means, if he rolls any number above three he will successfully find bronze. This way, we balance what sort of resources we can get.

Now we move on to determining how to get these resources. Let's start simple with a lumber camp. Without a lumber camp, the citizens of a certain region could harvest 10 logs per update. After building a lumber camp, the citizens could produce 30 logs per update. That means that the lumber camp adds 20 log production. Now, how do we increase the amount of logs without building you say? Well, lets state it this way. If five citizens produce 10 logs without a lumber camp and the same five can produce 30 logs with the lumber camp then that means their production goes from 2 logs per citizen applied to 6 logs per citizen applied. This means that resource production buildings don't actually produce resources but effect the rate at which citizens produce resources. Now, let's say this is after a successful survey of forests. This means that you indeed can harvest logs in that quadrant. Now, let's say that the quadrant is a forest quadrant. This means that the citizens would have been producing 1 log per if it was not a forest quadrant. Thus, the natural increase from the lumber cap is four no matter what. Basically, each lumber camp increases the production of the citizens applied to it by 4. Thus, in order to limit the amount of production we would need to limit the amount of resource buildings that can be placed in a certain quadrant.

Anyway, this is just my idea on how resources should work. I shall now get back to work on my application.

Name: Kingdom of Majorca
Capital City: Palma
Ruler: James I of Aragon

Brief history: Kingdom of Majorca was establish by political scheming of James I to create a Mediterranean enclave between Capetians of France and Crown of Aragon.

@Twistedsun - Accepted. As for resources on the map, see below.

@DAWNSTAR - I like some things about this idea. If every RPer just did a little research and found out what resources would be around their current claimed area, it would make trade possible and not restrict freedom too much. I don't think we should have a points/percentage-based system for surveying, as my poor brain probably couldn't deal with it and it might restrict freedom a little.

As for lumber camps, etc, I'm not sure how that could be done. Of course, it is fine to roleplay the construction of a lumber camp - and in war, if you specifically state you destroy an enemy's lumber camp, they would have less access to wood. As a representation on the map or the keeping track of who has built what, I'm not sure it could be done. But, perhaps, we could have 'fortress' territories which are built over the course of a number of IC pages and give defensive boosts to the units in that territory.

@Kinkaz - Accepted

@Zambza - Acepted

I'll try to get a map up with everyone's claimed land so far on it later today GMT. Keep making those nation sheets :D

Here's the map so far. I know Naples seems a bit big, so some of you who have claimed less (particularly Sardinia and Majorca) can claim a couple of mainland territories if you would like.

Kingdom of Sparta

Capital City: Sparta(Black dot on the map)

Ruler: King Aeolous and King Theleon

Form of government: Dual Monarchy(Two kings)

Traits (choose two of the following):
Militaristic'Gia ária !' 'For Ares'
Seafaring 'Pou mas dóthi̱ke apó ton Poseidó̱na !' 'Given to us by Poseidon!

Brief history:The Kingdom of Sparta use to be the small city state of Sparta. Sparta was a mostly disorganized but militaristic city state led by a despotic general. The general had grown old and lazy. He was unwilling to change or try and conquer more land in the name of Sparta. Eight years ago, a group of soldiers lead by Aeolous Rorithor started a rebellion. Aeolous besiged Sparta with a small coalition force consisting of three hundred and fifty Spartans and fifteen trireme. It took three months before Aeolous sucessfully took over Sparta. But, it was not Aeolous who killed the general. Instead, the general's son, Theleon Courine killed him. Theleon and Aeolous were both considered heros of the rebellion and were placed as the heads of the Spartan empire. Aeolous led the seafaring forces of Sparta while Theleon led the land forces. Since then, Sparta has expanded quickly by conquering its neighbors.

Name: Tang Dynasty China
Capital City: Chang'an
Ruler: Empress Wu Zetian
Form of Government: Monarchy
Traits: Militaristic, Diplomatic
Brief History: WIP
Claimed Land:

Name: Empress Wu Zetian
Title(s): Empress
Age: 66
Brief Backstory: Like most civilizations, China has been male-dominated throughout much of its history. Until very recently, women were afforded few rights, and direct power was all but totally denied to them. For a woman to attain the rank of Emperor, to become the most powerful person in China, was almost unheard of. Only one person in the entirety of Chinese history was able to do so. That person was Wu Zetian, one of the most remarkable rulers - female or male - the world has ever seen.
Appearance:

Personality and Interests: Wu Zetian puts a priority on increasing her empire's population over expanding her empire. Sometimes, she may possess only one city and not build a new one until later. Wu tends to have a somewhat large army consisting primarily of ranged units, with an upper emphasis on defensive militia, and is known to make use of espionage.Wu is rather difficult to befriend. While she can be very friendly, she is often disloyal and tends to become guarded. Watch out for her deceptiveness, especially when you are friends with Wu, because she may end up declaring war on you. She is not quite keen on waging wars, though. Wu will often try to protect city-states, and likes to befriend them as well.

Not sure about that. As this is not our timeline, it obviously won't be BC/AD/BCE/CE. Perhaps we should start on Year 300 of this world? And how does everyone want the time to move on?

Late Bronze Age/Early Antiquity kind of tech era. Bronze is commonly used, and iron is beginning to be discovered.

Well, it's fine for it to be some kind of colony, but I was assuming most people would choose a European, Middle Eastern or North African civilisation. China is fine, so long as it is a colony and you explain how it got there.

And as a note to everyone, city-states will be put in after we have a few more civilisations on the map.
