Got a few announcements.Skylar, would you be okay with my human nation providing military assistance to the Athens colonies? Earth's reaction to that sort of conflict would probably be fairly aggressive.

I'd imagine there'd be some military intervention. Question is how to set up future interactions without the Athens colonies ending up a subannex of Earth governance.

In regards to what I've said, I brought the issue up with someone else, and it's been solved. I don't know why, but I saw reverse-engineering as a shameful thing for humans to need to do. For those who suggested that before, that is the solution I've been convinced to srrive at. Essentially, what's going to happen is that humans will discover or capture more advanced alien technology, but, instead of directly copying it, they use it as a base to go down their own path.

I'm game with this. Plays well into the Grey Star's efforts to convert their post-scarcity Eudaimonic economies and industries into a war machine. Human innovation over copying alien hardware.

Drop the longing to make humans juggernauts in the RP and simply go with the idea that every faction is more or less capable of great destruction. Unless you have someone in this RP trying to waltz in here with cannons that fire singularities and starship armor comprised of pure neutron star matter, everyone is more or less going to be on the same playing field.Once a civilization achieves FTL technology and has the ability to traverse planetary systems with relative simplicity, you're looking at a species that can throw around firepower in excess of the teraton range.War with care is all I say.

why assume FTL means actual movement? What if the FTL doesn't even move anything at all in terms of activation? (Speed I. FTL not correlating to speed in Real space) Sure it's still a nice way to deliver a warhead super quick in theory (I find it amusing how in a RP with honorable warrior races there's also space bound bomb everything from orbit folks like you or me), but why the teraton talk?

Because current humanity can construct a gigaton-level nuclear weapon if it wanted to. Granted, it would be enormous, but it could be done.

A civilization that could traverse between planetary systems and star systems in a reasonable amount of time is to be assumed to have access to weapons systems and power generation apparatuses of such daunting, awesome power that, to us, it would be considered nigh-magical. I guess you could say that an entirely peaceful species could achieve interstellar travel, but they could just hose you with the exhaust of their fusion-based or antimatter-based engines and more or less render whatever armor and/or shielding that you're using null and void.

Placing an FTL drive on an inert object like an asteroid or a giant piece of metal turns it into a moon-shattering relativistic kill vehicle.

I realise the Technocracy is represented as massive but this is more the fact the factions are spread out within it. Don't take it as it being some kind of super power or anything. It could be represented as several smaller patches but it doesn't really bother me.

FTL tends not to be literally FTL in many space settings so I don't see the problem. Often which it just means you press a button that warps some space and pretend light light speed barrier doesn't exist until you pop back in real space somewhere you want to be.

Considering how we're starting at a Galactic Council whereby nations already have a fair idea of each other it's going to be hard to RP all that history.

Plus the whole point of a sheet is to gauge what the nation is like. The GM uses them to assess everyone and such. You can hardly expect the GM or the rest of the players to work with nothing?

I can guarantee you Gorgemast is among the best writers in this entire forum. No, that isn't sarcasm. Jeddaven has been around the Precipice crew long enough to know Gorgenmast is a really damn good writer.

I'm not going to go into how IC posts are infinitely more valuable than sheets again, but really, it's IC posts that should define a character and/or nation. You can learn just as much from a handful of IC posts as you can from a bloated character sheet and, honestly, it's a better means with which to judge the the character as well as the writer. It says more about you as a person when you learn about someone's world through their in-character posts, as opposed to consulting some encyclopedia-sized sheet whenever you need to interact with someone.

I never once questioned writing ability, I just personally, and I think I speak for several other players, think that some pretext isn't too much to ask for.

Because he hates sheets, as he said.

And I don't blame him. I do too. It's a lot better to just lay down the history through IC posts than to puke it up into some sheet. It's simpler, and it allows for more freedom. He can make it up as he goes and that is way more fun than restricting yourself to what you wrote down in a sheet one night.

Which is why you can play in different RPs with different nations etc.
How exactly is the history going to be IC without being disparate to the current events? I think random info dumps on history would be rather jarring.
Look our philosophy on how to do things is different. I've been doing it like this for six years now and we're never going to agree so there's no point arguing about it.

There's truth to this. For instance I find it really annoying how terminal wants to have such detailed pre-contact records and only interact with him to some regard on it because IC isn't up yet.

Like, I can just make up what the annihilators did to destroy their interstellar civilization of why they made/uplifted the sugarcubes in the first place as we go into IC for instance. A 60+ line contact history for a dead alien race like the Nassu seems really pointless for example.

But he could at least like, post a picture of what they look like or something if writing apps isn't his thing.
