Don't Worry Roadrash and Tomebinder will jump us in soon.

Truf.

I'm mostly leaving the jumping-in of people to TomeBinder. Even though I have permission to do so, I don't know all the subtle chaos he has planned for us, and I don't want to throw a GI-shaped wrench into the works. He'll know best when it's time for the new characters to be brought in. In the mean time, I'll have a post up later tonight. I decided to take most of today to un-trash my apartment and whatnot.

Btw, whoever suggested "Vietnam in HD" ... great suggestion. Now that I have Netflix back, I've been watching it, and I'm kinda hooked. And it's great to get a better look at some of the history in the Nam.

And I must say, I am still thoroughly enjoying this RP. Sometimes my interest can wane quick.

If you guys enjoy literature about the Vietnam War, I highly highly recommend Philip Caputo's memoir A Rumor of War, as well as Karl Marlantes' novel Matterhorn. Both are must-reads.

Caputo's memoir is a good one, I read that a long time ago. Also try The Things They Carried a collection of short stories about a platoon in the Vietnam War by Tim O'Brien.

Major John Plaster, a MACV-SOG veteran, wrote a memoir called 'Secret Warriors' as well and a history of SOG; both are great reading. So is Bernard Fall's 'Street Without Joy' about the French war in Vietnam. (And "Hell in a Very Small Place" about Dien Bien Phu.)

Also David Hackworth's 'About Face': he is one of the most decorated soldiers of that war.

Two more good Vietnam books.

"Fallen Angels" by Walter Dean Myers, and "Fields of Fire" by James Webb. The latter is on the USMC Commandant's Reading List for junior enlisted haha.

Yeah. "About Face" will never be on a booklist for military personnel, because Hackworth decided that Vietnam was bullshit, after three tours and attaining the rank of bird Colonel. What, why, how? Well, it's in the book. Before he had enough of it all, he was the guy that wrote the "Vietnam Primer" which was reading for troops being deployed to Vietnam.

But Hackworth was a battlefield commission from Korea that commanded troops in Vietnam and had a pretty good track record until he went on TV. Afterward, he became Newsweek's go-to man covering military matters.

Also, David Halberstam's "The Best and the Brightest" for how presidential politics in the Kennedy and Johnson admins got the US into the war, as well as Neil Sheehan's "A Bright, Shining Lie" about how the relations were with the Vietnamese at the Colonel-and-up level.

@Error Sounds good, this RP has lots of room.

Anyway, I happen to be a big student of the era's history. I wanted to know what my parents and grandparents experienced and dealt with and that led to digging back to the times before that as well. History is a rabbit hole that way; you tend to study things to better understand other things, and that's why I recommended books about the French experience in Indochina, which are in turn informed by the French experience in WWII which had a lot to do with how WWI ended and so forth.

But a lot of what we deal with even now in the US often has to do with a reaction to Vietnam, culturally and politically; it seemed like a minor war at first glance, but the huge influence it had on the United States is easy to take for granted, because it's right in front of our face, and that makes it hard to appreciate on the whole sometimes. Connecting the dots is what history is all about, identifying influences and how the influences evolve.

Edit: Then again, I imagine a French person could tell us how the Algerian War plays into their modern politics -- it's obscure to us but an ever-present influence to them.

True story, @HeySeuss. Hell Vietnam has even had ramifications for how we handled Iraq, and how Afghanistan is being wrapped up.

There was always a fear among the higher-ups that things would turn into another shit show, and we'd show our ass in front of the American people again. It's resulted in lots of tight ROEs, and things of that nature.

I remember watching a documentary that mentioned how much "precision strikes" and "clean" future-war tech were stressed in the media during 1990's Desert Storm. The goal was to alleviate fears of a second Vietnam, the first of which was still sitting very raw in the public consciousness.

@Error Quick nitpick, and others correct me if I'm wrong, but unless your character rose through the ranks as an enlisted NCO before becoming a commissioned officer (a "mustang", in which case he'd be very experienced), he'd be much younger. If Smyth is a brand new platoon leader, I think he'd be around, what- 23ish?

On the other hand, the DoD sent tens of thousands of body bags to Saudi Arabia, just in case things bogged down. They were, privately, ready to deal with a significant Saddam threat and gave due respect to the idea that Saddam's troops could put up a hell of a fight. Then, of course, the war went off without a hitch for the Coalition.

Yes. He'd have gone through college and done an ROTC program, unless he was a Westpoint graduate. My Platoon Commander in Afghanistan was 22.

EDIT: By the way, @HeySeuss, if you have Netflix check out "Intimate Enemy" if you haven't already. It's a movie about the Algerian War. Really good stuff, if you're down to read subtitles (it's a French film).
