Alright folks, here we are and here it is -- the first ever bank of submissions for RPGC, and what a batch it is! There's a lot of reading here, so I'll keep the meta stuff as short as I can -- before posting all your stories, songs, and poems, I first wanted to remind you of a few voting guidelines (you can see the official stuff here).

First -- the most important part of a contest is writing, and you've sort of blown me away by how well you've done that part! Great work so far. Now comes the close-second-most-important part -- reading and review! It is less exciting and it's a lot of work, but seriously now, every single word you give here is solid gold to the authors who have contributed a piece. The contest crew is going to be working for quite a while I think, preparing some reviews for everybody who entered. But we need your help -- we're only so many people, and a lot of my folks have work of their own popping up. So whether you're a contestant, or just a passer-by reading the contest, you can do the whole guild (and maybe the next Hemmingway) a huge favor by pitching in and leaving some thoughts to help some writers grow. Please help if you can!

Now to keep things tidy, and because I'm hoping to have just pages and pages of discussion, we're going to break this up into two threads. This here is the voting thread. In this thread only, your response should be short, sweet, and to the point:

"I'm voting for 'Inspired by the ice cream truck themesong' because it made me happy."
example

That's so it's easier to tally everyone's votes when it comes time to declare a winner. I'm also mirroring all the entries to a Conversation Thread, where you can talk at length about the contest in general, the entries as a whole, your favorite, who should win, who you think should get the staff category prizes, and/or whatever entry you've just finished reading, or anything really. That thread, if we're doing it right, should be huge!

(in the future after some strenuous coding work by Mahz, we can do this via tabs -- and we're exploring other ways to break things down in the meantime -- for now, it's only an extra click or two, so we'll be fine)

Alright, that's plenty of meta. Let's get right to the jam. Here are your entries for RPGC #1 - Inspired by a Song

HANG ON WE'RE NOT DONE YET! Because of character-count limitations, I need one more post to finish out all the entries, DON'T MISS THE LAST FEW!! THEY'RE GOOD!

This concludes the (eligible!) entries for RPGC #1's popular vote. I should note that, in addition to all this, we've also received a few additional entries -- one of which you won't see here, as it's being submitted to an unspecified external contest (aka publishing!). I have two more that I *can* share, and if any more stories trickle in, I wouldn't mind adding them here at the end so that more folks can read them at their leisure. These are not eligible for the popular vote, for various reasons, but you can still enjoy them as we have.

Eh, gee. I vote for "For Blue Skies", and did that entry really have to start with the word "For" so I had to put two "for"s in a row?

In any case. I vote for it because it stunned me with exact proper amount of storytelling with a twist which was foreshadowed just enough to have been a superbly executed twist with a most ingenious use of a PS to confirm the suspicion and also have it as a fun and completely sensible way of putting it on the end. The way it was made as a personal letter made it feel so personal, and made the twist in the end much more difficult to realize, and despite the depressing nature of what had happened it filled me with a satisfied happy aura. I'll simply say that I enjoyed it the most, and therefore it gets my vote. Well executed, well conveyed and well written, I simply feel it rather perfectly did what it was written to do. That is my opinion in the end. That is all.

Edit: The runner-up for my vote would be Never Forget. Definitely.

My vote is for "Go West"

Its been a week since reading the contest entries, and Go West is the one that still sits on my mind. It gave me warm fuzzies, and just I loved it.

cross-posting a voting update from the discussion thread:

Well, we were kicking around an idea to let people vote for first-place, second-place, and third-place -- which would've made tiebreakers much easier to handle. But the poll button isn't cooperating at the moment. If @Mahz can get it up this weekend there's still time to implement it, but for now the tie is essentially broken.....

TELL YOU WHAT!

To do this manually is a bit harder and a bit more confusing but, if anybody cares to throw in ONE runner-up piece per voter (as in, you pick your favorite, and then pick one more if you want to), I think we can use those as tiebreakers, in the event the voting becomes deadlocked again. We'll have to see how many total votes are handed in, but I think we might do at least first-place and second-place trophies.

Also -- if you submitted an entry, and you don't want to vote because that might hurt your chances of winning, that's totally fine -- you can cast just a tiebreaker if you like, and I won't count it unless there's a tie to break. Just specify that in your voting post so I don't mess it up.

Keeping promises. It ain't yesterday (Only 44 mins late, give me a break), but my vote goes to Never Forget because of the well-done character and plot development, great imagery, and great pacing. Just a great effort.

My runner up is Steppin' Out because of a great protagonist, well-done descriptions, and neat use of literary style.

I know I haven't reviewed it yet, but my vote goes for, as many others have done, "Never Forget."

The author put an enormous amount of effort into it, which alone deserves some major kudos. For a story written on a little-known internet roleplaying thread website, what you wrote was something I'd see on the bookshelves. I wish I could write with half of that kind of quality.

Still Waiting gets my vote! I loved the descriptions, and I could clearly imagine and feel the same way as the main character. Love, love, love!

Voting will close soon! Tomorrow, at 'After-my-appointment-o-clock,' which should be late-afternoon for most US users. Make sure you're casting your votes ASAP, and remember -- you can pick a runner-up choice for tie-breaking purposes.

New reads coming soon, so stay tuned. And write harder, if you're hoping to get a story in, deadline is Sunday night.
