Absolute zero, as far as the party's been able to tell so far. The ship appears to have been powered down for some time and so all life support, including the heating, has been offline for what seems like years.

The good news is that the ice machine's still fully stocked.

Errr.... Marga's going to need some sort of suit for that sort of environment, won't she....?

As soon as Farvis's hand slammed through the thin metal door of the locker he felt sharp claws grabbing at his wrist, cutting easily through his prison-issue jumpsuit as if it wasn't there before slicing their way through his tendons, leaving his hand flailing uselessly.

Actually, he's wearing the medical suit on the outside of his prison jumpsuit, as evidenced by the fact that he activated a forcefield around his head before boarding the vessel. If the creature inside can cut through nano-tube reinforced polymer, then how did it get trapped in a thin metal locker? Couldn't it cut its way free?

Also, shouldn't there be at least some pressure, as the umbilical was at full pressure when he cut the door open?

I can get Marga to open it with a mini explosion? She's not wearing armour so it would be able to sink it's teeth/claws into her. Does that solve anything?

And this is why you bring your envirosuits to work every day kids. Although I would expect the Navy to have issued a standard space suit if Marga didn't have one already.

Sevyn could plug Jemini into the wheel socket and use the bot at a wheel, but when brought up to the drone the Syndarin was answered by a rapid succession of high pitched beeps and whirrs, followed by attempted mutilation by blowtorch.

That meant that the plan was a go.

There's some standard issue environmental suits stowed in the storage locker to the right of the shuttle's airlock. Felix already prompted Farvis about them when he caught him trying to steal the booze. :)

You'd better hurry though, according to Hundred's calculations we've got less than twenty seconds before the shuttle's survivability rating zeroes out.

I'll edit my post and get her to suit up.

What properties do those suits have?

What properties do those suits have?

Standard environmental protection (obviously), mag boots to lock onto deck plating in zero gee, basic comms package with emergency beacon, short-range thruster pack. regenerative oxygen supply unit capable of continuous operation for upto 100 hours, urine recyc unit (produces strawberry-flavoured non-alcoholic champagne), anti-wedgie forcefield generator inside crotch seam and female users have their breast size portrayed as one size larger while wearing it.

The suit isn't rated for combat operations, but its hardened outer layer is designed to survive small explosions and puncturing so it may give a little protection against blood-sucking tentacle monsters, unless worn by Japanese schoolgirls in which case they'll dissolve instantly on contact and those girls are gonna get tentacles raped and impregnated in under sixty seconds.

There might be some other gear in the locker too. So far Mez is the only one who's managed to successfully find the lockers stuffed with survival gear and military equipment, and all he took were parts from a commlink headset.

Ok, in that case I'm going to have to edit my last post To take a gun. Any word yet on how it cut through my suit?

Very sharp and powerful claws, plus those prison jumpsuits are designed for cheap manufacturing rather than defensive capabilities. For centuries the Alliance has used the tried-and-true method of letting prisoners gank each other to control overcrowding in their facilities.

There's a rack of standard-pattern shotguns to the left of the airlock, equipped with flechette round ammunition, along with side standard-issue service sidearms (automatic laser pistols with single or rapid-fire functionality.) I'm surprised no-one asked me about these earlier. :)

He wasn't just wearing a prison jumpsuit. Over it he was wearing what my CS refered to as "carbon nano-tube reinforced polymer weave with a built-in forcefield for the head, to function as an emergency hazmat suit." It would be highly resistant to tearing, cutting, and stabbing, though not blunt force trama, such as concussive damage or broken bones.
The metal was weak enough for his to punch through it at 10-15 times normal human strength, so the creature should be able to cut through it if it could cut through such a suit.
Also, he only punched the door because the suit would resist tearing by the torn metal of the door. He's not going to risk a tear in his suit when they have no air pressure and its "absolute zero" out there.

I'll grab a shotgun, though, and a set of comms gear. No one would have time to put on a space suit, though, with only twenty seconds left, even if it's as easy as getting dressed.

I hadn't realised that he'd changed into the sterile suit before starting the adventure, but the claws would still have been able to cut through the reinforced material given their nature. I don't want to say anything more until the party actually discover what they're dealing with.

The standard issue environmental suits are designed to be used in an emergency and make use of nanotechnolgy. All you have to do is place them against your chest and hit the big red button to get them to inflate around you before compressing back down to form an airtight skin.

Deployment is rated under standard conditions as 2.7 seconds, however some anecdotal accounts have reported deployment taking upto 7 seconds in hostile conditions. For female users you also have to writhe about erotically while the suit is deploying, but that's optional for males.

With the interior essentially being the vacuum of space, I guess my blood just froze the hole shut, but I'll need a doctor and a pressurized environment to have surgery. I guess I'm going to be cloning myself a new hand before long.

And edited mine. That extra layer of protection really paid off, but you'd better hope the interior seals on the environment suit hold out long enough to get free and patched up.

Ok. Time for lessons in elementary astrophysics with Dr. Hundred Zanzibar Thermopolis Kira

Space. Is. Not. Cold.

There is very little matter in a vacuum, hence, very little heat transference by any means other than radiation. As such, object cool down at a markedly slower rate than in atmosphere unless interacting with volumes of other, cold matter, like interstellar gas clouds. Depending upon the insulating qualities of the Lone Star's hull, likely to be substantial as a long-voyage space craft, it's size, and how long it has been in the current star system, the Star is more likely to be hazardously hot than it is to be cold. Especially if many of it's systems are still functioning, as the bots and depressurization sensors seem to indicate. That is an awful lot of energy with nowhere to go, just building up inside the ship.

If it really is approaching absolute zero inside of the ship that is a much more interesting anomaly than otherwise.

Also then we get into the complications involved with superfluidity and quantum hydrodynamics with H2O in those conditions. If that is the case than Hundred will just stay outside in the meteor shower, thank you very much, she'd have better chances with them.

tl;dr: Stop having fun with your space opera guys! Because physics!
