Moiraine Mors
Age: 24
Race: Beorc
Gender: Female
Affinity: Ice
Class: Shaman
Personality: While being an introvert, Moiraine does not shy away from others. Instead, she listens to them. She listens to their affairs both important and unimportant. It is very rare that she speaks and when she does it is only when absolutely necessary. Even then, many find that what she has to say is puzzling and usually doesn't help at all. Moiraine is neither loyal nor disloyal, which comes to be expected of her after a while. Many simply believe that she does as she pleases but some know more than that. Some know that everything she does is for a reason. It is calculated and precise. And of course they are correct.
Biography: Moiraine's life has been marred with odd instances of particular fortune and misfortune. The Mors family were wealthy nobles of Cliace known for their extraordinary Anima magics. Wind, Thunder, Fire, their family had a master for each. However, the House of Damodred was also famed for their magics. Yet, the Damodred family was always second best to the Mors. Their magics were always the same rehash of the Mors' magics. Until finally, the Damodred's joined houses with the Luce family. Among the Luce family were many skilled healers. It wasn't long until the Damodred's bore a daughter capable of Light Magic. Now with Anima and Light mages, the Damodreds soared past the Mors in fame. The Mors name was quickly forgotten and replaced with Damodred.
This obviously did not sit well with the lord of the Mors family, and so he devised a plan. Lord Zlo Mors' was old, unmarried, and did not have an heir. However, his niece, Moira, had just given birth to a daughter, Moiraine. And so Zlo decided to take Moira's daughter against her will and claim Moiraine to be his heir. Then Zlo had his best mages perform a ritual that would make Moiraine one of the best mages of their time. This ritual would invite spirits into Moiraine's body, making her a Spirit Charmer. The mark appeared on her left hand and the ritual was a success.
For the next couple years, Moiraine was treated more like an object than a child. She began schooling at the age of four and began practicing magic at the age of five. She wasn't given time for anything but these two. School and magic. Magic and school. The days tolled by and it was all Moiraine knew really. Zlo was mostly absent except for the times where he checked in to see how his prodigy was doing. The only person that showed affection for her was her magic tutor, Patrim. Patrim taught her how to read the ancient tomes and how to cast her fist fireball. He taught her that fire and lightning were stronger than the sword and the shield. When Moiraine asked why mages didn't wear armor Patrim laughed. Who needs armor when the enemy can't reach you before they're burnt to a crisp. Good thing they were wearing armor, huh?
Yet, Zlo was an impatient man. He didn't understand what was taking so long for Moiraine to develop. She was a Spirit Charmer, a prodigy. He scolded Patrim over and over again until he relieved him of his duties and found a newer, harsher tutor. By this time Moiraine was eight and was capable of magics that most men couldn't perform in their entire lives but it still wasn't enough. She needed to do something no one had done before. Something far more impressive. And this new tutor would push her harder than ever. Moiraine began practicing far more and began reading about every kind of magic possible. More and more until Moiraine barely got any sleep and was in a constant state of exhaustion. Moira, Moiraine's mother, had finally had enough of this torture and attempted to rescue her daughter. On one of the few nights they let Moiraine rest, Moira sneaked into her sleeping quarters. She told her daughter that she was her mother and that she was going to rescue her. Moiraine didn't understand. Mother? She didn't have a mother. And rescue her from what?
Carrying her child, they made their way through the dark corridors of the castle. Yet, they weren't fast enough. The guards found the two just before they made their escape into the night. Moira and Moiraine were brought before Lord Zlo for justice. It was there that Zlo had Moira executed while her daughter watched. It was there that Moiraine finally did what Zlo was waiting for.
As her mother lay dead before her, Moiraine finally understood. She understood that she was her mother, and she understood that she had been living a life of torture, a life that only served Zlo's desires. And so she began to cast a spell, a spell that burned her left hand. It burned so much that she wasn't sure if she could finish the cast. The burning spread up her arm and across her chest. Down her navel to her tows and up her neck and around her ears. It burned and she screamed in pain. Finally, the burning melted away from her body and formed in the air before her. A perfect sphere of pain and misery.
Everyone around watched in horror for they knew what was happening. Moiraine had read too much. She had practiced too hard. And now she had delved too deep. The sphere, black as night, melted now. It dripped to the floor like candle wax. However, as it reached the floor, it seemed to melt through the floor as well until finally it was all gone. Moments later Zlo was screaming in agony. Below Zlo was a strange symbol, and from it appeared the black matter. It crept up Zlo's body, burning everything it touched until finally Zlo fell to the floor silent.
After staring for a moment, men finally decided to seize her. However, when they approached her they were struck down by the same black matter that attacked Zlo. Moiraine attempted escaping but couldn't bare to walk. She collapsed to her knees and watched anyone approaching her fall in burning torment. Finally, the soldiers stopped. The dark magic stopped. And Moiraine fell unconscious.
When she woke, she was laying in a bed. Before her stood Patrim, her old tutor. He explained to her that he had heard what had happened and went to the castle as soon as possible. Anyone who approached her was attacked by some malicious magic and so she had been left there. In fact, many had left the castle in fear of the dark magic spreading. When he arrived he easily dispelled the magic and removed her from the castle in secrecy. When she asked why he had to do it in secrecy a long silence fell on the room. Then he told her that she had murdered the Lord Zlo Mors. Men were looking for her now, eager to avenge their Lord. He would hide her, he told her, and keep her safe.
Patrim had a plan. He would keep hidden until the next moon. When he had secured enough resources, they would escape the city and make for the nomadic lands to the north. There, she could finally have a normal life. However, what Patrim did not expect was a full search of the entire city in the dead of the night. When Patrim awoke to the soldiers standing over Moiraine, he did not hesitate. Fire burned their bodies until they were black and smoking. More soldiers came though, and Patrim continued to defend Moiraine until the house was ablaze. The fighting led outside as more and more soldiers came for Moiraine. More and more fire. Moiraine stood close to Patrim gripping his leg, tears streaming down her face. Before long, the entire village was blazing as the Fire Sage continued his magics. Everyone now had come for her, soldiers with spears, mages with tomes, and even villagers with pickaxes.
Finally, the sun rose and the entire city was destroyed. In its epicenter was Patrim and Moiraine. Patrim, laying on the ground dying, and Moiraine, unscathed. He told her to go North, flee to the Nomadic lands as per their plan. She begged him to come with her but he refused. He told her to go and to never forget all of his lessons. She begged once more. Then, he told her he had one last lesson for her. Between sobs Moiraine told him that it could wait. He held her hand and said after all of the fire and the thunder, after all of the magics and swords and fighting, her strongest weapon was her knowledge. Never stop learning.
Moiraine never went to Stroulia as it was a place her and her Master were to go together. Instead, she traveled anywhere she could. All throughout Cliace she traveled in search of knowledge. Honoring her master's dying words she dedicated her life to improving herself, to continuing her learning. Yet, after years of travel, this began to prove difficult. She had to travel from city to city just to reread certain texts or scriptures she had come across in this castle or that. She needed to collect them in order to properly cross reference them. She needed a grand library of sorts. A place that could house texts of all kind. But how would she create such a thing?
Moiraine pondered this idea of a Grand Library for several years until finally an opportunity presented itself. The rebellion. Not only could this be a way of obtaining a large about of texts worthy of her Grand Library, it was a way of obtaining the funds to create such a thing. Before leaving to join the anti-rebellion force, she visited her hometown once more. The once flourishing city was nothing more than a skeleton. It was here that she would build her library. It was the last bit of resolve she needed.
