FACTION:Martian Front

By the first half of the 3rd millenia man has colonized the solar system. The economic cost of the First Space Boom sent the old-earth powers into a recession from which they would never recover. A new world order emerged after a century of war-a totalitarian government that unified the remaining earth powers and placed the colonies under their direct control. The colonies, left to fend for themselves for nearly a century while Earth waged war, lacked any real means of military power and quickly signed a treaty with the new government. They became vassals to the regime, policed by the elite space armada known as SKYGUARD, hardened veterans of a centuries old war. Martian Factions are openly rebellious-It is the year 3129 and power is changing hands once again.

This is the interest check for a political/military and trade RP taking place on Mars. I'm going to be upfront that simple stats will be used to make sure combat is fair and favorable to the superior tactician. Factions can be anything a player wishes that fits into the setting-disgruntled colonists,a miners consortium, corporate funded terrorists, mercenaries for hire or anything else you can talk me and the other players into. I would hope that players could bring some interesting ideas while sticking to the core aesthetic of the setting. Let's write something great together!

The setting is inspired by (and in no particular order):Total Recall(1990), The Red Rising Trilogy, the Red Faction Video Game series, C&C:Red Alert, Red Planet, SpaceBase 2000, Dune 2:The Battle for Arrakis(1992), Destiny, etc..etc...

RP GUIDELINES

1.Be nice. Be active.
2.Casual writing standards apply
3.Battles must be agreed upon by both or all combatants.
4.Keep the story moving with your posts.
5.If your not sure about something ask. I really like contributions from people!
6.Nation Sheet is subject to change at any time. Keep with NS guidelines.

Setting Information

The Fall of the United Terran Government

The United Terran Government has fallen into civil war. Two months have passed since the Air Marshals were assassinated and the government toppled. High ranking members of the ruling party quickly fell upon each other with their private armies. Feudalism has returned to Earth. SKYGUARD has yet to declare which side they will fight for and no warlord has advantage over the other. A stalemate has emerged- Meanwhile on Mars, the centuries old iron-grip of the Terran Government is slipping. An opportunity for the factions of Mars has been presented.

Future Weapons

The incredible expense of future warfare has led to different practices on the battlefield, especially in space. The cost of repairing a damaged star-cruiser is immense. Destroying a vessel is catastrophic. Almost always, the objective in space warfare is to knock out the command center of the ship and capture it for refitting and redeployment ASAP. Marines are trained specifically for ship to ship combat, and most defense weaponry on-board the bigger star-cruisers are aimed at repelling such attacks. But on Mars, the biggest concern is orbital bombardment-which even the most veteran commander is wary to authorize on civilian populations.

The weapons of future war are not pretty. Despite the advances in space travel, energy manipulation, industrial production and many other fields, warfare still remains brutal-especially on Mars. Private corporations develop tanks, artillery and aircraft, powered infantry suits and mechs. Each corporation striving to outdo each other with the latest development in shielding and energy weapon. On Mars, things are more practical and gritty. Men fight with what they have and get a hold of.

Despite the political upheaval on Earth, the solar systems economy is vibrant and stable as ever. War is good for business. The megacorporations stand to gain immense profit in the years to come. Credit transactions occur between mercenary armies, the banks of Europa and corporations instantly, all unregulated and hush-hush. Since the assassinations of the Terran Air Marshals, the Corporate Industrial complex has been churning out weapons continuously. Mars is arming.

Colonists

The Space Boom saw the mass exodus of hundreds of thousands of people from Earth to the other planets. The people of Mars are descendants of the first generations of colonists that left earth during that time. They are fiercely independent and proud-critical of the United Terran Government in all but open rebellion. They are hard-working, determined and rugged. Generations of life in the harsh Martian landscape has given the people of Mars a serious backbone.

Mars was one of the first planets colonized. The terraforming technology those early settlers used was crude and inefficient. Terraforming is still occuring in some areas of Mars. Wilds still exist, uninhabitable areas that are rarely explored. Some factions use these areas as homebases and secret camps. Supersticious settlers claim ghosts of the first colonists haunt the wilds. Some say those ghosts haunt alien ruins.

Some of the best mining happens to be based on Mars. Rich deposits of valuable minerals and ore can be found all over the planet. Generations of colonists have kept secret the richest veins for fear of corporate pillaging. These resources will be sought after by corporations, mercenaries and colonists to strengthen their hold on Mars.

Mars is mostly terraformed but the great deserts still hug bastions of civilization. Ruins of bio-domes and research stations dot the cratered landscape-testament to the early days of colonization. Light-rails and super-highways cross windy deserts. Old mining complexes leave open maws like mouths facing the sky. Spaceports hug population centers. It is a mix of old and new, dead and living.

Factions

To make a faction first come up with a concept. Is it a corporation? A religious sect? Mercenary? Who is/are the leader(s)? What capabilities do your faction have? Economic? Military? What non-material resources do you have? (off-world contacts? Personel? Maybe you have the best pilots/hackers/negotiators etc) Once you have a basic idea start filling out a NS:

NPC Factions

SkyGuard

SkyGuard is the elite fighting force for the United Terran Government. Politics vary within SkyGuards ranks and has maintained the mercenary spirit its founders envisioned some 500 years ago. The UTG has held contracts with SkyGuard for centuries, but the current political upheaval on Earth and the steady economic shift in power to Jupiter (and maybe Mars) has had the leadership questioning SkyGuards future with the UTG. SkyGuard has a neutral disposition to players at the beginning of the game.

Masamune Space Structures (MSS)

A megacorporation from the earliest era of space exploration, MSS is revered on Earth as a sacred company, providing millions on Earth, Jupiter and the Asteroid Field with jobs. In the past 10 years, MSS has been purchasing land and derelict structures for refitting. It could be posturing but it would seem that Masamune has made a move for Mars, or at least wants a slice of it.

Elysium Defense Contract (EDC)

[

The EDC is the acting police force in Elysium City, the largest metropolitan area on Mars. Corrupt at the highest levels, the EDC has been in the pocket of various criminal organizations and megacorporations alike. Loyal to the highest bidder. Public approval for the EDC is low. EDC forces are small, but effective within the city.

The Bloody Brothers

In the early days of colonization, a spree of murders tarnished the heroic sensibilities of the first settlers; no longer on Earth-but still just as Human. The murderers were eventually caught and executed-a pair of brothers that slipped through the screening process or smuggled themselves aboard the colony craft. Folktales vary.

Taking their name from this dark page in Martian history, the Bloody Brothers are a band of mercenaries known for their extreme violence and indiscretion in killing. They appear, kill everything, and take everything of value. They attack outlying colonies and hijack high-speed merchant trains.

The Jupiter Movement (JM)

The Jupiter Movement is not necessarily a faction but a social movement towards transferring power of government from Earth to the Jupiter Alliances. The JM is popular among the 20 somethings of Mars, a populist counter-culture movement with wildly varying ideas about what it actually is. Some suspect corporate funding to muddy the Faction waters.

Flag:
Faction Name: Sanctus Diem Dominicum (Day of the holy lord)

Leadership:
Leader: Sancti Regis Justinian Constantine of Sanctus Diem Dominicum.

Second In Command: Secundus Augustus Kaiseros

Faction Type: Holy Order (Basically Religious Mercenaries)

Military: Must see military management section

Holdings: Sanctus Diem Dominicum only has one holding, and that is Sanctorum. The most secure and most advanced place on Mars. At least, for the military base. Sanctorum also is a city, where the military base lies. Sanctorum the city is also head by Justinian, as Sanctorum is the vatican city of the Orthodox faith, but that is enough about the city, lets talk about the base.

The Sanctorum military base is by far the most secure place on Mars. It holds 500 times more information then the Vatican Archives, and it is also said to hold a bomb capable of planet busting, but that is just speculation. What is not speculation is how Sanctorum the base is basically just a castle for Justinian. It is in the shape of a giant cross, that stretches 3 miles in each direction. It is surrounded by one of the strongest walls on Mars. Justinian says that Sanctorum is the 2nd Constantinople, except this one shall not fall.

Budget: The Budget for Sanctus Diem Dominicum is very large. Multiple Orthodox and Coptic Trillionares donate to Sanctus Diem Dominicum. That is not the end of it though, as Sanctus Diem is a religious order. It also has all of the money that Nations give to it for help in Wars.

Before I spend time making a nation sheet, a few questions.

Can we add sections, and how much further can we go in terms of leadership? I'm thinking of making hiders that include details for each of the leadership's members.

@Skylar Cool, I was hoping someone would go the colonist route.

@Vanguardian I appreciate the enthusiasm for the RP vanguardian. Some things to be aware of: The military, holdings and budget section don't need to be filled out yet. I've got some work to do on those sections. While your concept is certainly one I think can fit into the setting-I think we should work together to make it mesh better.

The NS is a wip (as is the whole thread) I'm just fishing for more interest. As far as writing more about your leadership, it's all up to you and what you want to get out of it.

The Belt Alliance

WIP

Leadership

The Belt Alliance consists of three smaller factions that have banded together to form one whole. They are led by a board of directors with three representatives from each small faction.
These three representatives from each faction consist of one military commander, one economic overseer and one operations director. Their roles differ somewhat between each faction.

Members

The Vestibule
A faction of traders, corporations and scientists that produce the ideas and goods of the alliance. They have the biggest impact and responsibility of the alliance's economy and budget. They also employ scientists that produces new technologies in the form of warfare and travel. They are among the sharpest minds of Mars, but is a relatively small group. Both the scientists and traders are directed by the corporations of the faction that hold the largest economical interests in the alliance. They further trade with other factions and has a sole goal of making a profit.

The Architects
A fancy name for a workforce faction. The Architects are the operations managers and has the largest population and workforce of the alliance. The Vestibule provides the ideas and directives, and the Architects see it done. They are master builders, engineers, technicians and overall masters of manual labor. They build and repair ships and mine the minerals in one of Mars' largest mining operations. At least as large as it can be when it's secret. The workforce have recently taken up hold in old abandoned mining facilities to escape suspicion from the larger, more dangerous factions and to mine the secrets of the ground that others left behind.

The Redfist Group
Finally, the Redfist Group. A military faction of soldiers that serve as the alliance's police and military. The first and last line of defense and the second largest faction in the alliance. They don't have many ships, but they have very high quality infantry equipment and most of the soldiers are veterans, elites from the past centuries of war. Originally the Redfist Group was a mercenary faction with a vision - they wouldn't just sell their services to the highest bidder, they would join the faction that shared their ideals. When the Belt Alliance came into existance it was because the three factions alone were too scattered and threatened, but together they form a unified front on mars.

Faction Type

Mercenary/Corporation mixture. The Belt Alliance is a unification of a workforce faction, a corporations-and-trade faction and a mercenary faction.

Faction Name: Eudaimonia Colony
Leadership:

Prime Minister Victoria Mayhew, governor of Eudaimonia Colony.

General Adrian Garroway, Commander of the Army.
Admiral Tsetsiliya Suvorov, Commander of the Navy.

Economic Minister Daniel Praxis.
CEO Melanie Winters, owner and director of Pentagral Industries, the largest shipping and industrial corporation in Eudaimonia, as well as owner of the largest spaceport.

Faction Type: Colonist. Their primary asset is manpower and numbers.

Bottom 3 sections are WIP on my end..

Military: Must see military management section

The Eudaimonia Security Force is distinctly a low-tech organization amongst the Martian factions. Lacking in heavy industry and orbital military shipyards that can build the high-tech wonders of modern warfare en masse, military budgeting has instead been retasked towards refitting civilian ships into an orbital defence force while equipping a low-tech yet sizable ground force with old fashioned yet effective chemical slugthrowers. A serious effort is being made to upgrade to Metal Storm type “stacked load” coilguns and plasma weapons, but they are currently limited to a few elite units due to production limits.

What the ESF does have is sheer reserves of manpower and very long recruitment lines. The ESF has a large number of active militia and regular standing forces, as well as reserve and garrison units, further aided by usage of biosynths in more "expendable" fields.

Holdings: Must see military management section
Budget: See military management section

~Vignette~

Eudaimonia- a state of having a good indwelling spirit or being in a contented state of being healthy, happy and prosperous. In moral philosophy, eudaimonia is used to refer to the right actions as those that result in the well-being of an individual.

From her view at the very peak of the Eudaimonium Arcology, Victoria Mayhew could almost see Eudaimonia as the metropolis it was supposed to be. Shining arcologies home to thousands, a modern spaceport the envy of Mars, happiness and peace for all.

Yet looking down seven degrees through the window revealed the true nature of the utopia conceived at the height of the Space Boom. Prefab housing for hundreds of thousands sprawling among the underlevels, barely above slum conditions in places where spaceport container docks were repurposed into housing. Heavy factories and mining sites could be seen in the distance sharply contrasting with the sleek arcologies while the low rumble of cargo ships could be heard in at the spaceport at a regular basis. What was supposed to be a utopia did not survive the economic realities of the post Space Boom era, and nor did it sound like it it would survive the tumult of the days to come.

“You are certain about this Praxis? This is almost impossible to believe.”

“Believe it or not, it is happening. The economic significance of Earth is waning, and the Jupiter colonies are on the rise due to their claim on the fuel trade. Combined with Elysium getting their starports upgraded while we can’t keep up....we’re losing trading power. And we don’t have anything any other colony doesn’t have except....”

“Spare raw labor.” Finished Mayhew. “And that only goes so far.”

“I wouldn’t be so quick to say that ma’am.” Replied Praxis as he plugged a datachip into her desk projector. “Labor is one thing that is always in demand on Mars. And our resident corporate is seeing it as an investment-worthy market. And she has some proposals for you to consider to capitalize on it.”

“Of course she does. Alright, lets hear what she has in mind.”

I'll just post what I have; still need images, information from that military development section, allies (if none, I'll be making them up just so the company has someone to trade with, an NPC if you will), a unique color code, proofreading for accuracy and conventions, and company history.

That said, I stuck most information into hiders because the below contents came out to be 16,400 characters approximately. I'll finish things up when the missing bits are put in the OOC.

Talon Security Development Corporation (TSDC)

Faction Type: Corporation (military development)

Alignment: Neutral until either hired or provoked.

Faction Name: Liberation for the Betterment of Mars (LBM)

Leader: John D. Scythe
John was once a well respected squad leader for SkyGuard. However, one day the UTG sent his Squad into a suicide mission without warning. He lost his whole squad. With a new hatred for the UTG and no will to go on, John disappeared for many years. Then, as the word of the unsettling of Earth came through he reemerged as the leader of a guerilla fighting force hell bent on kicking the corporations out of Mars, or at least make life a living hell while they're here.

2nd In-Command: Colt J. Donaldson
Colt is the son of a miner. His dad is the son of a miner. His dad's dad is the son of a miner. The men of his family have been miners since the day Mars was colonized. Colt himself was the leader of a Miners Union. Only it wasn't much of a union. No matter how loud Colt demanded change, conditions never got better. Colt grew tired of seeing his guys die due to faulty safety equipment and then their widowed family getting no compensation. So he, and a group of miners took up arms. They used Viet Cong tactics to pester Corporations and the EDC. They used mining explosives to blow up bridges and destroy trade routes. They snuck attack conveys from tunnels under the ground. When Colt saw LBM forming, he saw that they had the same goals. A merge was quickly formed.

Faction Name: New Horizon United
Leadership:

Faction Type:
Mining Corporation with own security forces. The NHU has been around for quite some time but has always laid low in the far off asteroid belt. Where it has built a rather big space station that is completely self-sufficient and provides mining infrastructure like big a foundry and refinery. It always had a small personal security force. As they knew that it wasn’t possible to count on SkyGuard. But since Mr. DeLaLune came in charge, he has been greatly expanding the security arm. Now he has his eyes set on Mars. Aiming to unearth whatever minerals and treasures one might find there.

Everyone who is serious about joining the RP should be prepared to format their sheets when I get the Character Tab Post up. All I'm going to say is pick a color and know your BBCode. It will be something like this:

If anyone has a suggestion for another section in the NS-speak up!@Chenzor@ArenaSnow@Skylar you guys are in for sure (just reformat your NS-I know it's a pain in the ass-sorry!)

@Legion02@Elitestpotato@Vanguardian just put in a little more work on your NS and your good. If you need help/ideas pm me or ask in the OOC.
