Sorry about that Kyou, hope you find another one.

I would not mind doing this, but @BelatedGamer,@Apollosarcher, @Satoshi Kyou, [@Lady Lavender, @Solace, and @Darkraven, I need to know if you guys want to do a free-form roleplay or use some sort of system. IF you want to use a system, what should it be?

The best 'system' I can think of is the dice=rolling system.

Everyone starts with low stats of Vitality, Defense, and Aim. Weapons and armor increase these stats. Elevation and Cover increases these stats.

When you attack, you roll the d20 and add that value to either Defense or Aim, add modifiers, then compare it to the opponents own value of the d20+Aim/Defense. If the attacker succeeds, he deals as much damage as his weapon allows. If he fails, the shot misses.

EDIT: I'll get on an OOC I reckon.

So, it's going to look like a tabletop huh? I'm not sure if I'm joining though. Maybe. We'll see. I think using a system isn't a good idea though. It becomes nothing like roleplaying, so free form it is. EDIT: Then there's the matter of balance. How sure are you that the system is going to be balanced? It'd be like designing a game, which will take a while -- and it will lead to things becoming too complex for it to run.

But here's a link to my RP, not that it's of much use. You could always use some of my story elements though, if you want:

http://www.roleplayerguild.com/topics/46772-xcom-enemy-unknown-season-1-the-coming-storm/ic

There you go. I'm not proud of me getting cold feet, no matter the circumstances. I haven't forgiven myself for it, which is why if I ever become GM again, it would be for an RP that's extremely small-scale and self-contained, and simple to run. Like I said, if you make things as epic and complex as me, you'd better be ready to commit your life to it. Otherwise, keep it simpler.

No, it won't be table-top Darkraven. But part of what makes XCOM XCOM is the choice between choosing to fire or not, and getting frustrated and throwing the controller at the screen because one of your greatest soldiers just got killed.

I'm not a fan of a system either, but I might still use some sort of free-form system. I'll decide whether or not you make your shot, and I'll decide whether or not you get flanked and killed. It'll be harsh, but oh well. This is XCOM, right?

@TJByrum Indeed sir, it is. I had a very different way of expressing the decision making bit though, do consider. I believe my roleplay's gameplay is fine, just that I didn't simplify it and neither did I have the will to keep it going.

But yeah, harsh is the XCOM way. Cheers to that :)

The way I figure it, if someone flanks you, you're either injured or dead. If you run out of cover while someone is on overwatch, you're injured or dead. If you try to shoot someone while being suppressed, you're injured or dead. If you don't move out of the way of a burning car, grenade, or RPG, you're injured or dead.

Pay attention to your surroundings, be smart, work as a team, cover your flank, and you'll be fine.

Same goes for EXALT/Aliens.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and if you're behind some full cover (a thick tree, large van, or wall) you're probably not going to get hit. If you take cover behind some benches, mailboxes, low walls, etc, you best watch out. If someone is on a mountain, building, or something, they might have a good chance of hitting you.

Basically, common sense. Makes sense (pun unintended), but it shouldn't be gamey, because we have the game for that. I prefer a good story, that's what we're here for. It'd have to be case by case, in my opinion. But most of the time, yeah, if you're under a falling, burning car, you're roadkill. Still, depending on alot of factors, you'll be surprised what a person could get out of. For example, an injured alien is guarding a place, and you decided to come out with a few guys, chances are, the alien might not do anything. Stuff like that. Basically, all I'm trying to say is, don't go with game logic, go the direction writers go.

Oh, and another thing. I'm a big horror fan. :) It would be great if this XCOM roleplay is a horror. I think XCOM is meant to be a horror, the world's first horror strategy game, haha.

Anyway, I'm still unsure if I'd join. I've always been here to advise, as I can empathise with you wanting to start an XCOM roleplay. I'll play by ear.

That's fine Darkraven, thanks for the input you've been giving me.

The first time I played XCOM I knew next to nothing about it, so there was a lot of mystery and 'figuring out' going on. It seemed every day I found a new alien, or had some new armor/weapons, and it was neat to see my team and the aliens evolve over the course of the game, especially since I didn't know what to expect.

I want to have that same mystery and intrigue present in the RP.

Huh, well I just posted an OOC but it disappeared. wtf.

I'll do it again later guys, sorry about that. But the system I;'m using won't be mechanical and won;t rely on dice rolls nor percentages.

During a battle you get two actions per turn. I'll post once, then everyone posts once after me, then I post again, and so on until the battle is over. During your post you may run, shoot, throw a grenade, hunker down, go on overwatch, etc - whatever you can think of. You can do two of those. so maybe you run and shoot, or maybe you shoot twice; perhaps you throw a grenade and then shoot, or run and then run some more, etc.

I'd be interested in joining but just wanted to know whether you'd be sticking to the classes already seen in the games, or if other talents would be catered for?

I only ask since I'd enjoy playing a signal's tech style character who'd be able to intercept and jam enemy comm traffic, as well as being able to filter jamming signals being used against the team to make sure they can always have a line clear to speak with Command back at base.

Name: Sumiko Unohara
Callsign: Canary
Rank: Rookie
Nationality: American (Japanese parents)
Age: 23
Appearance:
Class: Support
Specialisation: Comms Tech
Weapon of Choice: Pistols
Psi-Rating: Untested
Gene Mods: None
Attributes:
HP Will Aim Sight Movement
5 40 65 27 12
Special Ability:
Jamming Signal
Once per mission Canary may prevent Aliens from moving during their turn unless they have already been discovered by the X-COM team.

During a battle you get two actions per turn. I'll post once, then everyone posts once after me, then I post again, and so on until the battle is over.

Will you have a time limit for posting, so that we're not waiting too long for one person to post before ending a round?

I mean, there is a reason why, literally an inch away from the input field, there is very obvious text that says "Please save your shit before you post it."

No need to be rude to the man. Give him a break, I think losing all that work is lesson enough.

@Genni At first, I wasn't going to use classes. I was going to let people equip whatever weapon they wanted to fulfill specific roles. If people wanted to include specializations, like Comms Tech, I would make sure to include scenarios where they could use that specialization on the field. And I was going to use perks and such, but I don't want to make the RP to mechanical. Perhaps I can come up with some very basic perks.

Also, there would be a time limit, but I am a generous person so I would make sure no one gets left behind on accident.

@Tatsua Aiisen It's happened dozens of times to me, but I get over it. Besides, I'm to lazy to open up Wordpad.

It might be useful to have people state which class they'd be playing their characters as, more just to make sure you have a good balance of characters playing so the story will be more interesting to play. Coming up with creative ways to use your abilities, rather than just using a preset auto-fire skill, would also come into the RP then.

For instance, a Sniper shooting at a sign to cause it to swing down and knock an alien out of cover so the Heavy can blast them apart, or an Assault charging an enemy through a weak wall or a window to get them out of a building and away from civilians, or a Support throwing a smoke grenade into the middle of a group of aliens to blind them while a Sniper moves into position.

since X-com has people dying alot what do we do with new characters or is each player going to represent a country/base?
old xcom had a feature that instead of satalites you make new bases

on another note... in xcom stats are random... which stats do we use? and do we remove bravery? (considering they are our characters after all)

I'd say keep Bravery, as it would give the players an indication for how they should be having the characters react to the situation. The idea of trying to get things done but having your character freaking out at every shadow at the same time would be fun.
