The hooded figures would not stagger in their goal of dragging the woman away to some unspoken and grisly fate. The five of them were as silent as carriers of Death, their grip only tightening as the woman continued to scream out and barter for her life.

There was no use in silencing the woman. Who would care enough to defend her? Who would waste their time on her well being when they had their own lives to deal with? Some of the townsfolk were even cheering the cloaked figures, shouting cries to kill the heretic and burn her blood for the crimes she supposedly committed.

The five figures were near a large well in the middle of the town when the shoutings of a young man made them turn slightly. Tatsumi would protest all he wanted but they would not answer nor would they concern themselves in dropping their quarry. Instead, one of their own moved away from the pack and shuffled to meet the man head on.

The others turned away and continued in their dark task while the one left behind reared back and pounced on Tatsumi roughly, pinning him to the ground. The hood was wrangled free and what was thought to be a man was not. Or rather, the creature had the body and stature of human but the entirety of its head was that of a foaming, rapid dog.

Its black snout dribbled with snot while drool pooled around its hungry jaws. Its eyes were mad and parched, showing the slit pupils of a feral animal. The creature barked viciously as it wrestled Tatsumi’s arms to the side, howling and snarling right in his face.

The townsfolk watched on with placid silence.

Sinthe stood a couple feet away from Tastumi, he looked at the people cheering for the woman being dragged away, Sinthe felt disgusted and grew a scowl, before he could do anything, one of the hooded men or creatures broke off from the group and began to approach them, when it gotten close enough it dove onto Tastusmi. That's when Sinthe caught a look at the person in the hood, it wasn't a human being, it was a being that had the head of a rabid dog that looked like it was effected by a cold of some sort.

Sinthe didn't stand around when he saw Tastumi under attack, Sinthe put the creature into a choke sleeper hold as it still sat atop of Tastumi, the white haired man pulled it's head upwards. When Tastusmi had his shadow stab into the monster, Sinthe quickly dodged the shadow spear and let go of the beast,Sinthe looked to the people and helped Tastumi up off the ground."You people are monsters just letting someone get dragged off by something and cheering as they get take away."

It seemed their introductions would have to wait, not only due to the flirting that two of the group were having but also a rather frightening scene was playing out as a women was dragged away into the night by five strange beings. "Hora hora... This looks bothersome." She commented, the others not even hesitating and starting to chase after the group, attempting to try and find out what the heck was going on. However it seemed likie they did not take kindly to strangers trying to tell them what to do as one of them attacked! Showing itself for the monster that it really was.

"So these are the things?"

She was speaking more to herself as she raised her gloved hand to brush it through her hair, her mind running a mile a minute trying to fit the pieces together despite what her rather drowsy and calm expression may have showed otherwise.

Reaching up to the long blade Jen did not even know what she was really doing, it was as if by reflex that it was slowly drawn from her back and supported on her shoulder. "Mmmmm all I wanted was a hot meal" She gave off a cute groan as she started to make her way towards the scene but then bypassing it "Some of us should move ahead, I am sure you all can handle this one?" She asked but clearly was not waiting for a answer as she started to stride after the other four monsters, the one already busy with the other two new 'hunters'

"That was way easier than I thought it'd be. When I tried pulling that on the fox she hit me upside the head with a bottle." Thinking of it still sent chills down his spine. Who would hit someone with a bottle over one little peck? As the distance between Leo and the ruins grew further, he began to feel like maybe he shouldn't have left that girl standing there alone. Certainly she would have made a great test subject. However, that thought quickly fled his mind. Even though they had just meant. He had already forgotten that she existed "Where to now? I suppose I could always leave this forsaken place." Leo had pulled a map out of his bag and was observing it intensely. "I could always just go west. I hear the cliffs of insanity are real nice this time of year."

“Wait! Please." A voice called out from behind. Leo had never heard this voice before. Who could it be that was calling him? When he turned around he greeted by a rather plain looking girl who could have easily passed as a villager. "Who are you? Why are you asking me all these questions?........ Wait! Have I seen you somewhere before?" Instead of answering her questions he fired back questions of his very own. Where had he seen her before? It made perfect sense for him to forget her. Why would he remember some random villager? "Are you random villager number 23? No, that can't be it. Are you the daughter of random villager number 23?" This was really starting to get on his nerves. Why couldn't he remember who she was? "Just forget it. I have somewhere to be, so I'll try and answer your questions as fast as I can." Leo took a deep breath then began to answer her questions at lightning speed. "No, I'm not a villager. I don't remember ever going to the temple. I'm not from beyond the walls, but I'm also not from within them. There is nothing for you outside those walls. The only thing you will find there is suffering and pain. Now if you'll excuse me. I'm going outside the walls."

The demented hound continued to bark madly even as Tatsumi fought against it. Its jaws clamped over and over, wrestling against the man’s grip in a desire to take his flesh as its own. Its onslaught however was interrupted by Sinthe’s sleeper hold and it flailed around in an attempt to claw the other human off. When it felt him finally release his grip, the creature howled and lunged forward for the killing blow.

Its head stopped suddenly, jerking as something sharp pierced its flesh. Blood clotted around its furred head and it barked in pain and anger, finally relenting its hold on Tatsumi. It backed away on its knees, the shadowy spear clearly unstable but throbbing into the creature’s large and muscular throat. Pained growls filled the air as it wobbled away from the two men to regroup with the others.

To Sinthe’s accusation, the townsfolk merely shrugged. He would get no sympathy from him using that kind of talk for what was the worth of one human life? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Their own lives were meaningless in the eyes of those all seeing.

As Tatsumi was no doubt recovering from his first usage of magic, a creeping sensation would come over him. Such were the consequences of dabbling in dark arts, be it willing or not. It was a cold shudder that would threaten to weaken his knees. Above all, the uncanny perception that something was watching him would overload all of his senses…only to soon disperse away as the real threat made itself known.

Hearing one of their own in pain, the hooded figures turned back to the group and uncovered their hoods. They let go of the screaming woman, who backed away into a corner to watch with widened eyes. Each of the beast men had heads of canines, varying in different breeds and colors. A humanoid hand drew a rusted sword for them each and the creatures raced forward to kill these fools that defied their will.

Tatsumi was relieved that the dog-man was no longer on top of him, but his relief was suddenly replaced by an overwhelming an inexplicable fear. If he hadn't already been on the ground he might've fallen again. What is this feeling?! Terror momentarily overwhelmed him, but he was quickly reminded of his situation by the howling of the beasts that he had challenged. It appeared that killing their companion got their attention. Tatsumi rose quickly, grabbing his sword and shaking off the strange feeling.

But still, this must mean something... something is watching us.

He refocused his mind on the battle, raising his sword across himself. Four of the beastmen were charging, and it appeared that Jennifer had joined the fight, with a large sword. It relieved him to see that she was still okay. He ran to catch up to her, "I see you've made it out of the church. I've learned a little about where we are. 'The World of Wasted Dreams', whatever that means... but I suppose we should take care of these things before catching up." With that said, he charged towards the closest of the monsters, moving to cross swords with it.

"Arghh... I'm going to tear those bloody hounds to shreds!" To say that Akemi was irate when she shouted those words, would be like saying that a volcano is hot. Sinthe got away to help the other newcomer who was with them until a moment ago in a fool's errand, turning all of Akemi's desire into fury, and even if she knew that killing the dogmen would yield no fruits, she still reveled in the idea of a small carnage as means of getting of the steam that she'd built.

She stepped out of the tavern just as the mutts were about to engage the newbie hunter, luckily there was one extra foe, waiting to taste Akemi's wrath. She approached the creature and slashed it away with her crescent-shaped blade, before turning to the newbies and saying "These creatures are known as God's Hand, they always come in groups of five to drag away townspeople who have sinned against the Absolute and 'purify' them in an unknown place."

"Fighting them is worthless as more will always come when someone else pisses the shit out of God, that's why everyone ignores the damn mutts. That said..." Akemi slashed the dogman again before continuing "You already picked the fight, so there's no use in holding back now, unless you want to die. And... the faster we end this, the faster we can finish our business from earlier in my room at the inn." Akemi shot a look at Sinthe before plucking a flask from inside of her cloak and throwing it at the creature.

"BuRn To ThE BoNeS dAmN mUtT!" Her voice shifted in a sinister way and her eyes glowed like blazes out of hell as Akemi torched the monster with her fire magic, though it still wasn't enough to kill it.

Sinthe noticed the other creatures turning to them like everyone else and cracked his knuckles, soon the fox eared woman from the tavern arrived to help, he noticed that she glared daggers at him. She then began to explain what these creatures were and what they were trying to do."Well then their god may get a little pissed at us for killing their disciples, but if we can we should kill their god too so they won't be alone." Sinthe cracked a grin when she still wanted to finish their business from earlier, he took a glance at her and ducked a rusty sword that tried to take his head off.

Sinthe punched the hoodied dog man in the chin that tried to cut him. Sinthe delivered several punches to the dog's head and chest before grabbing the hooded dog person by their waist and flipping them onto the ground face first, Sinthe turned to the fox eared woman, but he was readied for a surprise attack from one of the dog things that wanted to kill them now."We'll finish what we started back in the tavern, I'm Sinthe by the way." He told everyone his name and re-assured to Akemi that they'd finish.

“….Wait a minute, that answers nothing…” Macey stood puzzled once again, before a sudden realisation made her heart sink. “…You don’t know anything about this place either. You don’t even remember who I am.”

She was going to turn back, but she heard a distant snarling growling and yapping like a pack of wolves in a fierce fight. She couldn’t see them at all from this distance, but whatever could be making those sounds, were probably much worse than wolves. Looks like it wasn’t totally safe within the city walls either… is the outside meant to be even worse than that?

“Just as useless as the rest of them, can you believe… I actually saved your life!” She whispered to herself. And in that moment, Macey’s exasperation turned into a gleam of determination. Seeing that the bird-man hadn’t gone far, she ran ahead and stood in front of him, defiantly. “I saved your life, when one of your experiments almost killed you. The house you were in collapsed, and the whole roof fell on top of you. I, out of the goodness of my heart, was the one to save you while all the other villagers looked on, waiting for you to die. See that? I’m not like the other villagers. In fact, I’m not a villager. I’m something better. I moved that roof without a problem – I have super human strength you see? Then, before I could tell you how you could repay the debt, you wandered back into the darkness. The shock of the whole ordeal must have given you amnesia, but I’ll forgive you this one time. You can’t be totally useless like the rest of them, you see. If you’re not useless, then prove it.Macey walked up to him, trying desperately hard not to shiver internally so close to his haunting mask again despite what her strong exterior may show, and grabbed his glove in a fierce hand shake. “I’m Macey James, and I’m pleased to be colleagues with you from now on – until you pay back my debt, that is worth one life. But that can wait. First, we’re going outside the wall to the land of pain and suffering, remember? ”

The first dogman was already weakened critically from the sudden burst of darkness Tatsumi had unleashed. As Akemi approached it with hell’s wrath blazing in her eyes, it whimpered aloud once before two slashes and a dagger made it silent forever. It slumped forward with fresh blood leaking out of it in large pools, paving the street red. Or so it would seem….

As Akemi unleashed her fire magic to torch the dark thing, it leapt up with the remainder of its life to end the one standing before it. Fire coating its fur in ragged clumps, it lunged with jaws open and aimed for the girl’s throat. Near her, two of the creatures stalked around Jenniver with clear, malicious intent in their gazes.

They had come for a female and Jenniver was the next best thing in their eyes now that the woman was out of their clutches. Snarling with rage, they charged at her from both angles, swords slashing and jaws snapping with the intent of taking at least a good chunk out of the girl.

Two remaining dogmen of the original five were engaged with both Sinthe and Tatsumi. One of them was unlucky enough to be on the receiving end of Sinthe’s ferocious blows, staggering backwards and splaying on the dirty ground. It was not dead but it was disorientated from the rapid attack. The other one was weaving in and out of Tatsumi’s reach, taking quick slices with blade and claws whenever it could.

A fitting first battle for the new Hunters that proved most amusing for the citizens of Iredele. Even further away from this struggle were Macey and Leo. While the battle was raging in the middle of the town square, some of Iredele’s residents were unlucky enough to miss the spectacle at hand.

Such was the case of a tall and gangly farmer, lumbering around with a straw hat coated with dried mud that was too big for his head. He walked as if drunken by some sort of spell, alcohol being its name and he peddled up to the two with nary a care or worry.

“Hey, did you hear the, urp, fight going on? I hear there’s a, ern, fight. Near the town square with the well and the mud…right? Wanna come see, see, stranger? Got funny looking folk just like yourself,” he said in a slurred tone to Macey.

He had no reason to think he wasn't cutting into the middle of their conversation.

Jenniver looked to either side of her as what she could only describe as monsters took a rather unhealthy interest in her, with the holy book in her hand she slowly reached around to her back. At the moment the two beasts lunged for her she felt something click, a switch flipped and her body moved more gracefully than she could have ever imagined with such a large sword. Spinning around she lowered the blade so it lined up with her back to block the incoming strikes!

As the two attacks slammed into her the tip of the sword dug into the slabs below from the sheer force that hit her, thankfully stopping her from being flung back, and the book she had used as a cousin did its job wonderfully~ "That hurt about as much as I was expecting..." She was being suprised by this world by the moment and a certain amount of fear and glee welled up inside her, not that one could tell just from her face mind you.

Reaching up she placed her other hand on the large hilt of her blade before using the leverage she had to force the blade up, attemping to knock the beasts weapons above her head as she unleashed her own attack! The pages of the now ruined holy book fluttered around her as she gracefully extended her foot to use her falling swords momentum to swing it as hard as she could towards both of the beasts midsections!

The steps came naturally to Tatsumi. He slashed diagonally, the monster ducking the blow then skirting out of reach. Tatsumi knew he had to assert himself and pressed the attack, lunging forward with an overhead blow. The creature barely blocked, and Tatsumi pulled away momentarily, keeping up the pressure with another blow from the side. Another block, but Tatsumi kept going, this time he sent a sudden kick towards the creatures knee, catching it off guard and sending it to its knees. Tatsumi unleashed a series of overhead strikes to beat the beast down, but it managed to raise its sword and defend against the assault. Tatsumi delivered another kick, aiming for the creature's chest, sending it sprawling onto the ground. Tatsumi went for the finishing blow, stabbing downwards towards the beast's stomach.

Tatsumi himself was surprised by his aptitude with the sword. He was momentarily surprised, but than recalled the battle with wooden swords once again. He had experiencing fighting like this. Except this time if he made a mistake he would die.

"You think I know nothing yet you haven't even been here for a single day. I've been here for what feels like centuries. In that time, I've seen more than you could ever imagine." Leo put the girl in her place and prepared to take his leave, but when he turned away she quickly jumped in front of him and grabbed ahold of his hand. "You know what? I like your determination. You're literally shaking in your boots yet you managed to muster the courage to speak your mind. That's the kind of attitude that will get you somewhere in life. Do you really want to know what's out there? It's just as I said. Nothing. There is nothing out there besides suffering and pain. I have traveled for hundreds of miles in every direction. This is just the eye of the storm. The further out you go, the worse it gets. If you don't believe me then you are more than welcome to accompany me on my journey. It's been a while since I've talked to someone besides myself." Under his mask, Leo's face wore an unnaturally twisted smile. If you could see it you would you would think he was in excruciating pain.

"My name is Leo. Don't ask for my last name because I can't remember it." Without letting go of her hand, Leo turned towards the city gates and began to drag Macey behind him like she was a piece of luggage. If it wasn't for the random villager who approached the two they would have left without ever turning back. "You see that Macey? Even the village people mistake you for one of their own. You should really do something about the way you look..... As for you big fellow. Why don't you take a nap?" Reaching into his pocket Leo grabbed a small vial and held it under the man's nose. Immediately after smelling the what was in the vial the man collapsed. After a few seconds, he began to snore rather loudly. "Now let's go see what this commotion at town hall is all about."

When Leo reached the town center he was greeted by far more than he had expected. On one side of the fight was a group of fresh hunters. On the other side was a group of beast men. "That's enough fighting for today" Leo chimed in. "Didn't anyone tell you I was the only one around here who could disturb the peace?" Leo then suddenly tossed a strange canister in between the two groups. After a few seconds, it began to release a thick cloud of mysterious green gas. "Unless you want to be blind for the next few days I'd recommend getting out of the gas."

Sinthe finished the job on the dog that he had beaten senseless, grabbed the dog monster by it's muzzle and the back of it's head with both hands and quickly snapped it's neck with a loud popping sound, he stood up and noticed the others attacking the rest of the dog monsters with their weapons and magic."Magic and Weapons." Sinthe shook his head before crossing his arms and keeping his eyes on the action, when he saw Tastumi stab the beast in the gut he shook his head."Don't aim for the gut, aim higher, stab your enemies in the chest or cut their heads off." Sinthe told Tastumi.

Before they could take down the rest of the dogsmorphs, there was a burst of green gas that filled the air, Sinthe covered his mouth with his bandaged forearm."Get out of the cloud of gas !" He yelled Tastumi and Akemi, he grabbed both of them and began running out of the cloud of gas and towards the guy that threw the gas bomb, when he had Tastumi and Akemi out of the cloud he let go of them and looked at Leo."Did you throw the gas bomb ?" Sinthe asked, he didn't sound threatening or angry but sounded curious.

One by one, the monsters were being finished off by the newfound Hunters. They battled with unrivaled skill, almost as if the touch of a blade in their hands was something felt before, perhaps in some earlier time. The beastmen perished at the hands of these unmatched warriors, retreat no longer an option as they were cut into bloodied corpses.

The remaining creature that still breathed was the first, the one Akemi had been torching. With half of its right eye gouged out, it lunged in a final attempt to kill the fools before it. Only half of its vision remained and that half would soon be snuffed out completely as a torrent of green gas covered the area. The beastman howled in pain, clawing out blindly as its eyes burned and stung.

Before it could retaliate, something sharp and wicked pierced its black heart through the matted fur, slashing crookedly against its chest. With a final cry, the monster collapsed forward in the middle of the green gas. Something was off however, for the finishing blow came not from one of the Hunters present, but from an external source. Who or what it was couldn’t be said for sure as the presence quickly left as soon as it had appeared.

Only the sharpest of minds not corrupted by their exposure through time here would have been able to note the arrival and departure of this mysterious savior. The battle was over, coming to a fitting close. The stink of corpses already filled the air, only baffled more so by the continued apathy the townsfolk displayed. Their lust for bloodshed satisfied, they carried on with their bleak lives.

The woman from before, who had inadvertently started this whole mess, finally creeped out of her hiding spot. With a neutral expression, she strolled right up to Tatsumi, the one who had initially helped her escape. It was to be assumed that she would thank the young man for his hard work. Thus, it must have come as a deep surprise when the woman brutally slapped Tatsumi.

“Fool,” she hissed with angry tears in her eyes. “You’ve ruined the ritual! Are you mad? H-How could you….why would you interfere!”

The woman’s voice became louder and louder in pitch as she backed away like a panicked animal. Dry sobs heaved her body as she pointed an accusing finger at Tatsumi.

“Heretic! Heretic! I drowned my own daughter, consumed the flesh of my only son, and this is how I am repaid for my sins?”

She was making no sense and was only becoming more paranoid until she finally brushed up against the town well. Turning to look down at the dark hole, she turned to Tatsumi and flashed him a smile of triumph. Hope was not lost yet.

“Ut absolutam gratiam tuam,” she spat to him before jumping over and plummeting to her watery grave. The splash was only countered by the loud crack of bones being split and flesh being splintered.

The woman had killed herself.

Tatsumi suddenly found himself lifted off the ground, taken away from the green gas by Sinthe. All the beasts were dead but one, the one that had originally engaged him. The creature began bounding towards the group, but was suddenly silenced, a blade suddenly erupting from its chest, only to suddenly disappear. What?! Was that and effect of the gas? No, that can't make sense... someone else must've killed it. But he's left so quick! Tatsumi got up from the ground which he had been not-so-gently placed by Sinthe. "Well, that went well, for our first fight. Thanks for your help, errrr..." He looked towards the man in the bird mask, "What should I call you?" The young man asked politely, "I'm Tatsumi."

Tatsumi's introduction was suddenly interrupted as the women he had rescued began to approach him, I'm glad she's safe. Maybe if I'm lucky she'll have some information, and maybe a place I could st- He was taken aback as he was suddenly slapped in the face. He rubbed his face "Wha-" Suddenly she was yelling at him, calling him a heretic, ranting on about her crimes. Killed her own daughter? Consumed the flesh of her son? How could a person do something like that? His expression morphed to one of shocked horror.

"I-I..." Tatsumi was at a loss for words.

And then she backed into the well, and everything got worse. The moment she smiled at him he knew what came next. "Wait! No!" He stretched out his hand and ran for the well, but it was too late. She was gone before he could get even halfway there. He ran to the well and looked over the cusp. Dead. He looked back to the group and shook his head, then turned away. He stalked away from the square, heading down the main street, and down into the alley that lay between the tavern and the building next to it. He didn't want the others to see how pitifully weak he was. Once he was out of view, a tear ran free down his face.

I've never seen someone die... I couldn't save her... but is it really right to feel bad for someone like that? Her words ringed once again in his head, "I drowned my own daughter, consumed the flesh of my only son, and this is how I am repaid for my sins?” He braced himself against the wall of the tavern, This doesn't make any sense, she was crying for help! This place doesn't make any sense! More tears flowed down his face. "Dammit!" He shouted out loud, pounding his fist against the wall. He felt useless and weak.

Once the fight with the God's Hand came to a, slightly unpredicted, end, Akemi straightened her posture and coughed hard to clear her lungs of the green gas.

Her hood was down now, allowing everyone to look at her inhuman features only a little different than those of the God' Hand. Ignoring any looks that could be cast at her direction or not, the vixen turned to Leo and said "So, you have survived again, Crowface? Even cats have only nine lives, you should remember that. Anyway, if you want help to find another house to demolish, count me in... for the right price, of course." She grinned, flashing her best mercenary smile to the mad alchemist.

After looking around, Akemi finally addressed the other hunters "For those who still don't know me, my name is Akemi and I'll show you what you have to do in order to not have the same fate as Miss Gratitude. I'm feeling rather generous today, so I'll spare you of the standard fee, let's just split the loot evenly, right?"

She looked to Jenniver and offered her hand for the taller woman to shake "I like your style, it's rare for a woman such as you to wash up on this godforsaken place. Watch my back and I'll watch yours" Regardless of Jenniver's reaction, Akemi's next move could be only one.

"I think it's time to settle our business from early isn't it, Sinthe? I wonder why just thinking about your name makes me feel like my insides are burning..." Akemi said as she drew a provocative claw up Sinthe's arm and then, her five on his chest, before grabbing him by the collar of his garb and dragging his face to her level with inhuman strength "Come now, before your smell drives me crazy." She took a deep breath at the scruff of his neck before letting him go.

"Just ask the inkeeper for my room, I'll be waiting for you with something to drink." Akemi said as she produced a bottle containing a green beverage, that almost seemed to glow on the dark shadows of this place, from somewhere within her mantle.

If Sinthe chose to come after her, two things would happens. First, he would find out how her room is littered with Origami made from poetry paper, and second, he would have a hell of time as long as he could endure Akemi's rather voracious 'appetite', or... her claws, at the very least.

If he didn't... well, he would find what the saying "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned" truly means.

Macey felt her ears twitch underneath her hair – she was about to come up with a retort, but made a mental U-turn in the last moment.

“I do apologise. Really. I’ve just been a little restless for the past few months and now that I’m awake and running again… I didn’t want to believe I’d awoken in a world with absolutely nothing to do. But enough on that, you won’t regret taking me with you.” She kept up pace with Leo enthusiastically, but almost collided head first with the tall drunken uh… digger? Sewage cleaner? Seriously, how does a man get so much mud coated on his person?

“I’m not a villager!” She managed to protest through gritted teeth, desperately trying not to breathe in the dirt-collector’s stench. Eventually failing in this task, and bringing up her hand to cover her mouth, she managed to catch a stray lock of hair in her fingers and Macey caught a glimpse of it for the first time. In this atmosphere, her hair appeared to be a strange charcoal grey, and even her skin colour looked slightly murky. “Oh. Oh that. Yeah that’s… that’s kind of like the villager’s isn’t it… I should probably dye my hair red or something.”

She took a good few steps back, not wanting to be anywhere near the strange mud sniffer in case he suddenly vomited. That was about the time when Leo brought out a delicate little vial – and the man was knocked out flat. …Rohypnol? What kind of man keeps that sort of thing on him?
Supressing her sense of worry for the dust eater (and a strange sense of satisfaction, now that he was nowhere near her) Macey turned heel and followed Leo back to the town square. And, back to square one she thought. Except, square one with dog men and… wait, aren’t those the same people from earlier? Was Macey supposed to be fighting alongside them?

“Leo, these people came here the same time I did, today. Not the dogs, I haven’t a clue where they came from. But the others and I, we’re the ones that started in the church.”
She’d learnt by now to stay well away from any sort of glass or metal object Leo produced, so Macey stood well clear of the fight scene before Leo even threw it - she was only half surprised when a choking lime coloured smoke emerged. Just where on earth does he get the materials to make this stuff anyway?

A white haired male approached Leo, making a wide arc to avoid the smoke – but Macey was much more interested at studying the smoke, wondering if any of the beasts had survived. Well, one almost did, before a being like a shadow weaved its way through the smoke to assassinate it – and like a shadow, it was gone again, blending in perfectly with the alleyways of the city.

“Yeah. He’s important. We should probably follow him and check that ou-”
“Heretic!”

Macey turned her attention to a dishevelled looking woman, and for a moment lost all memory of the shadowy stranger. Well, that was probably the woman who all the fuss was over in the first place. Turns out she wasn’t such a saint after all.

Realising what the woman was about to do as she approached the well, Macey ran after her to stop her. But she was too late – she fell anyway. “You should have lived, so that you can walk past the graves your children every single day, and that their ghosts will haunt you at every hour!” Macey hissed. “That should have been payments for your sins.”

Still rather uninterested in the white haired fighter (or for that matter, anyone else in the square,) she turned back to Leo saying “Should have left her for the hounds, maybe they’d bring her true justice. I’ll be back in a while - don’t disappear, you still have a debt to pay. No, wait, scrap that. Do whatever you want. I’m going to find that dirt brained priest who expects us to protect this town, and rip him apart. If he thinks I’m lifting a finger to protect people like that, then he’s in for a surprise.” And with that, Macey stormed off in the direction of the temple. Back to square one - for real, this time.

All was still in the walls of the Temple. The hooded man didn't need to hear the attack of the beasts or the smell of their rot to know they had come. It was at the point where their mere presence was enough for him to lock the doors shut and close the curtains high. In the midst of his preparations, he gave pause when he spotted one of the younglings from before strolling up towards his Temple.

A dry chuckle escaped his dusty throat and the man decided against locking all the doors on this night. Turning away from the outside world, he carried his aged body over to the altars that marked the focal point of the Temple. The place was rotting, much like he was. And yet, symbols and bearings of the Absolute still reflected off their mantles, glaring back at him like an apathetic eye.

Two corpses whose faces were wrapped in swollen, dirty rags laid before the altar, gazing up blankly towards the symbols up high. Taking a bowl of what was proposed holy water, the man bent down to gently flick drops onto the ashen bodies, muttering phrases all the while.

“Ut absolutam gratiam tuam....”

The sound of Macey’s rapid footsteps rang throughout the entire room. They paused for a short while, then picked up pace again as Macey marched towards the cloaked figure with his back turned towards her. Hot rage cloaked her body, and she half expected for the ground below to burst into flames from her internal anger. Closing the distance by climbing the few steps to the altar, Macey managed to catch the final words of the Priest’s strange chant.

“Ut absolute, Dear Father," she said, half growling, and sarcasm dripping from each syllable. “It was the final prayer of the woman who died tonight. Of course, you’d know all about that wouldn’t you?”

The man turned to face Macey with a warm smile creasing his features before raising his arms to her and saying, "Young Hunter. So I take it you've witnessed your first hunt, yes?"

Rotting Bone shuffled down the stairs and off to the side in one of the tarnished, wooden pews. He sat down with a creak in his joints and limbs, the cane shivering in his grip as he placed himself down at a resting position.

"What can I do for you youngling?"

As he spoke, the man felt another presence enter the Temple. Two actually, but the first had soon dispersed away from his sight. Left was the form of a man and the image of a monkey. A newcomer to the town of Iredele, and the World of Wasted Dreams. A new Hunter.

"So the Young Devil has given me another one," he muttered to himself.

Mu woke with a deep yawn and stretch. He looked around and saw that he was in some kind of dusty building. He did not know who he was or why he was there, but it didn't matter to him he just wanted some food and to get the kink out of his neck. As he sat up straight and rubbed the dirt out of his eyes, something fell into his lap and began to thrash around. Mu looked down and saw a small monkey in little monkey clothes no bigger than his hand.

It was carrying some kind of charm pouch; the monkey looked at him confused at first, but then jumped up on his shoulder. Mu felt like he belonged there so he did not try to move him. He sat up straight and finally took in his surroundings. It was dark in here and at the center of the building; there was a altar that looked old as dirt with a man in deep prayer, that looked old as dirt. As he sat up he put the charm around his neck and walked over to man to ask him some questions.

When he got closer a girl came rushing in and walked straight up to the man. She looked like she had some words for him and he looked as calm as day. Mu felt that he had felt these emotions of anger from a woman before, he could not remember where but he knew how the man should have been feeling.

Macey stared at him in disbelief; not that anyone could tell, since it was hard to read the expression in her brown-black eyes. He knew! And he was perfectly relaxed about the whole affair too! And here this man sat, with the audacity to treat her like a fatherly figure. She mused as to whether the priest acted this way towards all the villagers - as he watched them die from his temple.

“Well, you see, you could do me a massive favor. The thing is, back from where I’m from, the church acted to serve the people. The church was a sanctuary, a safe haven, that made the citizens feel safe. Despite all the trials and tribulations sent their way, the church still held true to their dignity. And their beliefs, and their need to help the common people. You, on the other hand… demonic dogs raid the city on your doorstep and you don’t do as much as to lift a finger. You don’t do anything to stop the atrocities committed by your own villagers, you of all people don’t get to toss the word ‘Priest’ around like you’ve even earnt it!”

All was dark; except for the candle fire, the iridescent eye on the wall, and the harsh glint of light lining the barrel of the shotgun that was firmly gripped in Macey’s hand.

"I’m used to helping people who are unable to help themselves, you know. But it’s not like these villagers are too weak to protect their own – they just don’t want to. Why should we risk our lives fighting for people like this? For people like you?"

"There's no reason to shout in the House of the Absolute," Rotting Bone said calmly while keeping a slight eye on the newcomer. "Iredele is a strange little town, isn't it? Listen well now, because I won't want to repeat myself. The same goes for you as well young man," he called out to Mu.

"The people of this town, this world are indifferent. There is nothing you can do for them except perhaps extend their lives a little longer. Isn't that the good work of a church? I've done plenty youngling in guiding the dead to rest so that they may escape the dream. Isn't the knowledge of saving a live more than enough to satisfy you? You are Hunters now. Your purpose is to hunt, not save."

The man’s calming nature almost lulled Macey into submission. After all, it was difficult to look at him without being reminded of an elderly next door neighbor, or a primary school caretaker. And that’s exactly what pissed her off the most.

“What good is it to save just one life, when you can find the cure to the disease once and for all?”

The echo of the shotgun’s flintlock sounded like an alarm. “And something sour tells me that I’ve found the source of the infection. I’ll admit it; I hate facades, I hate actors, I hate people pretending to be innocent and humble when they are nothing but snakes beneath their skin. You could do me one sweet little favor though – you have three minutes to explain your connection to the hounds, these strange rituals and the woman’s suicide or you can leave the face of this world forever.” Almost as quickly as the words rolled off her tongue, the sound of metal scraping out of its sheath became wildly apparent to the newcomer; a hunting knife drawn in his direction, just in case he tried anything heroic. “And you, sweet sir, will stay exactly where you are. I’ll be damned if I get killed playing the part of a pawn in an old phony’s games!”

No sooner did Macey make such childish threats did the faint pricks of something sharp make themselves known along the edges of her throat. Closer inspection on her part would reveal the old man's cane placed dangerously by her neck. However, it was no ordinary cane and what was now revealed to be a blade was coated in small niches running along the length of the sword.

Impossible. No human could move that fast. And yet here he was all the same. He stood inches away from her, his eyes meeting hers from beneath his dark hood. There it was. There was no mistaking the answer to how he had easily dismounted her attempted attack. The fire of a Hunter was evident in his gaze.

"You seem to be mistaken young Hunter," Rotting Bone said, voice maintaining its intense calm. "I have done more for these people than you can imagine. I've seen many things. Young people like you torn apart into pieces of scattered flesh. There is no escaping this world young Hunter. There is only the thrill of the hunt. The sooner you can keep this in mind, the sooner you can continue living. Now, will you back down? As you can see, the length of my sword is covered in small pockets that release a very lethal poison on contact. One cut and....well, there's a very good reason the people here gave me a name like 'Rotting Bone'."

The man stared her down, grizzled smile never wavering.

"Perhaps when you've calmed down, this old man can entertain your curiosity."

The tension in the room was thick enough to cut with a knife. He looked back and forth between the old man and the girl. While the girl had pointed a knife at him, Mu did not feel in danger, but the man gave off a presence of death, it scared him. Mu knew that he was not one to be messed with and made a mental note not too. The monkey had crawled on top of his head as Mu spoke. "Wow... ok, ya lets all be friends here. Why don't we start by you putting the gun down and politely get the knife out of my face sweet lady." Mu said with smile of genuine warmth.

"I have some questions my self, like what are we hunting exactly?" He said to the calm man.

How did… a pile of old bones… move so fast? For all his talk about the hunts, it seemed as though a monster was living right inside of the priest the entire time. And he was still smiling. Still, Macey stood frozen to the ground as she tactfully put the shotgun back into its holster.

She was much more reluctant to drop the knife however, as Macey seemed to be furious at the man for a reason she couldn’t put her finger on. Eventually, she sheathed it without apologizing. Even so close to death, Macey still held her head high as her anger only just began to simmer down. “And here I was thinking you wouldn’t even react to an apocalypse. Still, his question is a good one,” she said, for the first time referencing to the new comer without malice. What is it exactly that we are hunting?”

Rotting Bone seemed to smile brighter, but just slightly. He removed his blade from Macey's throat to reveal a sheath in his other hand. In on fluid motion, his cane sword was concealed form peering eyes once again and he leaned on it much like he had earlier. There seemed to be some initials on the elaborate artifact though it was difficult to tell what the letters were. All that could be made out from this angle was an "H".

"Monsters," he answered them both. "Didn't I say that? You're hunting monsters. Nightmares that prowl this world and seek to consume the flesh of man. Among other things. As far as I know, there is no way to return to your old lives. Any more questions?"

“Wait. There’s no return?” Not that staying in bed all day everyday was anything Macey wanted to rush back into, but she couldn’t believe that she’d never see a TV set and a fridge again in her life. “But… hang on, who is the Absolute? We don't have a God like that in our world. The prayers you say and the ones spoken by the woman who killed her children are the same. You didn’t tell her to do that, did you?”

"The Absolute is the deity of this land," Rotting Bone said with a shrug. "It makes sense for the people her to worship their God, is it not? Although there are supposedly lost scriptures that strongly suggest the Absolute One is the progenitor of all worlds. But who am I to know such things? I am but a mere 'priest' as you put it."

"Well that's just great. No way out, and now a God that tells women to kill them selves." He said to no one in particular. Mu looked between the two in front of him and wondered what exactly he had missed. The he looked beyond and saw some items and clothes. "Hey can I have those, I mean if your not gonna use them of course? I feel like they are mine, and no offense you look a little too old to be trying to swing a sword that big." Mu aid with a hint of humor as he walked over to inspect the items.

The monkey had jumped off his head and started to dig through the pile. He resurfaced with a more comfortable looking out fit on and the charm still in his hands.

"By all means young man," the old Hunter said with a chuckle.

Macey paused in between his words, straining to work out the faint riddle playing underneath the strings of fate that brought her here. “Why would a God tell a villager to do evil, and tell you to do good, surely that’s not consistent…”

She turned away from the altar, somewhat satiated by the encounter. “Okay. I’ll hunt. I’ll find the answers I’m looking for in the hunt. You too, monkey kid,” Macey called, seemingly finding that knowing his name was somewhat irrelevant. After all, she had gotten used to the “bird-man” nickname quite snugly. “Once you pick up your stuff and that cute little pet, I’ll show you to the square. You seem like the lively type, a lot more energy than I can handle on my own. There’s more of us outside, and you might make a few friends there.”

She had barely gotten half way through the hall, before turning back to the priest. "You sound like you've been here for a real long time. If I discover anything new out there, I'll tell you. You know, hardcore facts - I refuse to believe I'm caged here in this small world. Even an old timer like you can learn new tricks!"

"Perhaps I can," the Hunter chuckled, turning away to bless his corpses. "And if you happen to run into my granddaughter on your expeditions, do give her a greeting young Hunter."

Those final words said, Rotting Bone continued on in his work with peace of mind. The sign of the Absolute stared down at them all, a reminder of this world's reality.

“Ut absolutam gratiam tuam.”

Mu stripped down and began to get dressed along with his companion. Once he put his clothes on he felt that sense of nostalgia again. As he breathed and moved around the clothes did it with him. They felt just right, not to tight and not to loose. He smelled them and they had a scent, it was familiar and close to heart, they smelt like him. He took the charm from the monkey and put it on, the monkey climbed on top of his head. He grabbed the sword and lifted it. It felt familiar in his had too, the weight was perfect and it had a clip that matched his belt. The last too items were a fan and an umbrella with. Mu grabbed the umbrella and fan. On the edge of the fan there was blades and writing on the side that read; "From Jin to Mu."

Mu saw this and looked at the monkey. "Well Jin is a drink i think so I'll take Mu." He said with confidence. He left with a hurry to catch up with the girl outside. "Thanks Old man for the “stuff." The last remark was over his shoulder as he stepped out into the night.

As one mystery was somewhat solved, another reared itself to take notice. The sound of sniffling caught the attention of a young girl and she walked to the edges of an alleyway until finally stumbling upon a downcast Tatsumi. Puzzled, she knelt in front of the man and tilted her head curiously.

“Excuse me sir. Why are you crying? Don’t you know the monsters eat the weak first?”

Tatsumi was pulled out of his self pity by a sudden voice. He quickly wiped away the tears on his face, turning away, trying to hide the fact that he was crying. But the girl already knew. I must look pitiful... some monster hunter I am... He looked to the girl. She seemed oddly familiar. I definitely know her from somewhere, but where? He realized he was gawking at her, and that he should say something quickly, before he looked like an idiot. "I... You're right, I must look pretty pathetic to the monsters, don't I? Some Hunter I am..." He sighed. "Anyways, I'm... I'm fine."

That's right, if I'm going to survive here, I can't break down because of something like that. I need to be tough... I'm going to have to see a lot of people die here, I think... He looked over the girl, trying to place where he knew her. She was fairly young, no older than 16 by the looks of her, with white hair. He shook his head. Maybe he really didn't know her. "Say, where are your parents? Is it safe for a young girl to be wandering out here all be herself?" He remembered the 'God's Hand' again. "This village doesn't seem all that safe."

Sinthe's questions suddenly didn't matter, he turned towards the woman that was saved by Tastumi and the others, when she slapped him, Sinthe was puzzled by her actions, the woman didn't reward his actions of saving her. The woman then went over to a well that seemed like it should have been bone dry, and dove into it head first and it wasn't long before they heard a splash and bones cracking, Sinthe crossed his arms and got a slight headache and had a feeling like he's seen worse before again, Sinthe then saw Tastumi run off and was about to go and talk to him as he ran down the alley way between the tavern and another building.

Sinthe then was reminded by Akemi that they should finish what they started earlier, she ran a clawed hand up Sinthe's arm and put another onto his chest, she then grabbed him by his shoulder and pulled him closer to her with crazy strength and wanted him to be with her before she got crazy about how he smelled, Sinthe didn't fight against her. He felt like Tastumi would feel better over time and he could help him by giving him a pep talk later if he was still feeling sad about woman killing herself, Sinthe didn't feel sad for her taking her life and felt like either way she'd die and this would probably would've been a cleaner death.

When the tall white haired man went inside and did as Akemi said, he went up to the woman's room and saw the large amount of origami papers around the room Sinthe did his best to not step on any that was on the floor, he soon picked one up in his bandaged hands, it was a paper crane and it reminded him of someone he knew he put the crane on one of the dressers and sat down on the bed avoiding stepping on the paper creates the best he could so the fox woman Akemi wouldn't get crazier with him.
