In the 2040s there was a Mars colonization rush. Over a dozen separate missions were launched by both governments and companies to explore and colonize the red planet. Most of the colonies succeeded, but when, in 2067, they became self-sufficient and declared their independence, the governments of the world were quick to brand them as traitors, terrorists, or radicals, whatever it took to keep them from causing unrest among the people of earth who were losing faith in their rulers. According to the official intelligence reports released to the public, they were planning on bombarding the surface with space debris and asteroid fragments to wipe out as many people as they could.

Though the people of Mars fought bravely, or if you believe the official story, cowardly assaulted the Earth military units with IEDs, surface-to-space missiles, and laser turrets, but in 2078 they were declared defeated, and the surviving ships of the Earth military units returned to Earth orbit. Space travel was quickly restricted, with few people being able to get a license to do anything more than take a sub-orbital flight above the atmosphere, and the orbital shipyards and space stations were abandoned.

My grandfather was the engineer aboard the Ares-7, the last military ship to leave Mars, as it was left there for another launch window so that they could verify the victory and clean up any surviving terrorists. Unknown to the governments, after returning to the surface and taking on a civilian job, he managed to build a computer and the other necessary equipment to hack into the Ares space launch facility and the Ares-7, both of which had been left floating in orbit. He worked to repair and maintain what he could with the robots on board, as he planned his escape. While on Mars, he'd seen what the locals were really like, and now he wanted to return, to help make up for the horror and pain he caused them, and to live as one of them.

While he was being too closely watched to ever leave Earth himself, even for a quick orbital flight, he knew that someday one of his descendents could carry out his mission. His mission to leave the planet was simple. He or his descendent would charter a sub-orbital flight and, while they were near apogee, a lander from the Ares-7 would dock with the ship. Modern sub-orbital ships were based on landers from the Mars colonization days, so they would be compatible. Everyone that was going to Mars would then board the shuttle and return to the Ares-7, where they would use it to go to the red planet.

We'll start off in a sub-orbital zero-gee joy-flight I, as his only surviving descendant, chartered with his life insurance money. We'll take a few bags each, and then leave for the station. After the ship launches, I'll time-skip to just before we enter Mars orbit, when we come out of the ship's outdated cryo-pods, and then head down to the surface to build our colony, salvage what we can, and make contact with any survivors.

Some of the colonists from 100 years earlier will have survived by building in old lava tubes, and will be our enemy unless we can talk them down. Also, they'll have started terraforming with lifeforms engineered to work in the martian atmosphere and soil, using ice as water.

This seems like a really cool RP. Is anything set up for it yet or is it still in the interest check phase?

It's still in the Interest check phase. Any idea what kind of character you'd want to play? My guy is going to be working his way through an online VR college engineering degree while working at a 3d printer store making files for customers to print at home or on the store's high-end printers. He'll pretty much be the engineer for the ship.

MARS! I am hella interested in this idea!

Any idea how many people are going to be taking this flight and what kind of people they are? I'm assuming that these are all people looking to live on mars so collonists? And that this is more of an 'under the radar' kinda mission... I doubt earth gov types are interested in havnig people live there again after trying so hard to wipe them out.

I'm pretty flexable as to what kind of characters I like to play, so some kind of rough idea of what your wanting would be a big help on that front.

Since we're chartering a private flight to get up, and my guy wouldn't want to risk word getting out because too many people are in on it, the number of colonists would be pretty small. Maybe a dozen, tops. Anyone that would be useful enough to risk telling them and willing to break the law to go to Mars would be possible. Ex-con, guy trying to get away from his ex wife, geek obsessed with space travel, and your typical rebel all come to mind as possible characters, but I'm sure there are many more possibilities.

I may have Earth send a ship after us, though because we launch during a proper transfer window and were ready to launch immediately, they'll be a week behind us.

Okay i've been musing and i think i've got a character idea for you to okay-

It would be a finantial backer for your dude, cause i'm sure whatever he managed to save wouldn't be enough for a potential colonization trip on the downlow, so enter my character as the rich benifactor that taggs along...

Only this benifactor actually some rich kid space geek who fancies themself to be a hippy survivialist.

;P what do you think? can they tag along? I can also do multipul characters if you'd like.

Actually, my guy is burning his grandpa's life insurance money on the flight, and we are stealing the ship from the UN military to get there, but we could still need money, depending on what we bring with us. Of course, we'll only have a couple of minutes, tops, to transfer everything, so we can't take anything too large, but if you know of a few useful but expensive things we could use, and want to bring them along, go ahead. You know how to smuggle weapons grade plutonium in your luggage, right? How about gametes from A+ grade donors to use in the artificial wombs we can build?
My guy, for example, will be carrying new harddrives for the ship because it's storage is 60+ years out of date and can't hold all of the schematics he wants to take with him, not to mention the programs he wants for the tech he plans on building. Imagine us stealing an Apollo ship from NASA to go to the moon and you'll realize how out-of-date the ship will be. Still functional, though, as he and his grandpa have been using the robots on board to fix critical systems.

Every big enterprise like this needs a crazy amount of money- there will be no short supply of things needing payed for, or people needing to be bought off or bribed I'm sure.

What I'm going for is someone who knows what they'll need when they start setting up on the planet: food preserves, medicine, water preserves, supplies for setting up camp and establishing a base to work from. Also potential plant and crop stocks, and simple but increadibly nessessary multiuse tools. Someone who's been dreaming of going to mars and living on it no matter the expense and a whole lot of time on their hands to plan for it.
(This could also include the womb thing- but i'd like to know more about it as i'm not exactly sure what you mean?)

I could also play an excon character who's involved with smuggling the weapons and such and such you need. Someone who's looking for a better life far far far away from earthly crimminals and gov types and willing to do whatever it takes to get off planet. Whichever works best for you. Or both! I'm easy!

The ship should have some of the supplies we need, as the military might need a forward base on the planet, but with every thing being 60 years old, replacements would be necessary for much of it. Seeds will definitely need to be replaced, as will much of the plastic stuff due to dry rot, including the inflatable domes I planned on using as our main buildings (inflate, then inject the support balloons ribbing the dome with hardening foam so that it doesn't collapse if we get a leak.

By "artificial wombs" I mean a glass jar with a membrane in it that a fertilized egg can be attached to, then nutrients fed to it. It will allow us to create new people and animals without needing a person or animal to carry the fetus to term.

Guns won't be that necessary, as there might not be an enemy, and the ship will have old military weapons on it, but we can print them if we need to.

Alright I think I'm starting to get the picture here, we need people who can do things more than get things. So maybe instead of an excon on the run, It would be um, somebody familer with robotics and mechanical stuff instead? Like your guy is an engineer but you can always use more right? Cause the entire ship is over 60 years old and everything needs a tuneup.

Also, we could probably do with having a doctor on bord. Or at least somebody with a medical history. They would also probably be the best to man the 'artificail wombs' and smuggle the gametes.

Beyond that though I'm kinda drawing a blank as to who you'd want on this journey to mars.

yeah, those people would be useful. We could also use chemists (to make stuff locally), geologists, and a pilot, to name a few.

Many Times I have an electrical Engineer as one of the big skills my characters have. Is that open for an option? If not engineering in general is always something I can RP with pretty well. Just I personally know more on electrical.

Me too, but I decided a more general engineer/mechanic, maybe with some computer skill, would work better for my character. You can take the power systems if you want. Electricity is pretty critical on Mars, as everything needs it, and we'll die without it.
