Though no one is certain why or how some individuals appeared to spontaneously develop superpowers more than two decades ago, the world is certainly reeling with all of the unforeseen consequences of such a development. Considering the number of individuals who expressed an ability to do something incredible and formerly thought to be impossible was so low, there was very little done to handle the issue by any government. It certainly didn’t help matters that the human race had recently come out of a war involving several major powers, though short of what would be considered World War III, and were thus in the process of rebuilding.
Of course, the frequency, and the intensity to a smaller degree, only increased as time went on, resulting in more heroes and villains. In the eyes of most, however, both were criminals, the villains for the obvious reasons and the heroes for their vigilante justice. As such, pressure on governments across the world has been mounting to create some way of controlling those threats to society, some advocating registration or isolation. Other groups have stepped up to urge governments to reward heroes for the good that they do and possibly ally themselves with the heroes.
In the meantime, the way heroes operate has gradually changed from being a lone wolf system where each hero operated individually to being more cooperative efforts with other heroes. Heroes eventually realized that they were better off working together rather than apart, forming small teams of two or three. There is also a rumor that a group of superheroes have banded together, much like a guild from the middle ages, though there is no real evidence for such an alliance. Unfortunately, some villains have also been showing a tendency to work in small groups as well in order to counter the efforts of the heroes to thwart their wicked plans.
As if figuring out what to do about individuals with superpowers wasn’t occupying the governments of the world enough, humanity made its first contact with extraterrestrial beings just two years ago when several pieces of equipment detected radio waves that could be deciphered into a pattern of sounds that indicated language. A transmission was sent back by the U.N. once everyone agreed upon what it would say, and the planet was visited shortly afterwards by diplomats. These aliens were similar to humans in structure, but with reptilian scales, tongues, noses, and eyes. Fortunately, most people seemed fairly okay with their presence, and peaceful relations between the two groups were established. Since then, other groups of aliens have come and gone. With the extension of hospitality by the humans, all contact has so far been peaceful, though there are some who worry about a group arriving that may not be so friendly.
Despite all that’s gone on recently, the major issue that virtually every country is facing is what to do about metahumans, or those with superpowers. Aliens and recovering from the war are important, there’s no doubt about that. But in the scheme of people having bouts that causes millions of dollars’ worth of property damage a year, they really don’t seem to be all that important.

Your character is a hero, at least for the time being, that has been invited to join the rumored guild of superheroes. Whether they used to work for a team before or not, they suddenly found an envelope addressed to them holding a handwritten letter of invitation and a plane ticket to a small island in the Pacific Ocean. Whatever your character’s reaction to the invitation was, they eventually decided to accept it and fly out to the island where they met the man behind it all and got settled into their own room and everything. Some will have been there a little longer than others, but that’s okay. Of course, it’s not all a life of luxury. The man in charge, Dr. Raul, has been working on establishing branches in major cities to help deal with local crimes, but until then, he regularly sends out the heroes in the guild to missions whenever the situation calls for it.
