Though no one is certain why or how some individuals appeared to spontaneously develop superpowers more than two decades ago, the world is certainly reeling with all of the unforeseen consequences of such a development. Considering the number of individuals who expressed an ability to do something incredible and formerly thought to be impossible was so low, there was very little done to handle the issue by any government. It certainly didn’t help matters that the human race had recently come out of a war involving several major powers, though short of what would be considered World War III, and were thus in the process of rebuilding.

Of course, the frequency, and the intensity to a smaller degree, only increased as time went on, resulting in more heroes and villains. In the eyes of most, however, both were criminals, the villains for the obvious reasons and the heroes for their vigilante justice. As such, pressure on governments across the world has been mounting to create some way of controlling those threats to society, some advocating registration or isolation. Other groups have stepped up to urge governments to reward heroes for the good that they do and possibly ally themselves with the heroes.

In the meantime, the way heroes operate has gradually changed from being a lone wolf system where each hero operated individually to being more cooperative efforts with other heroes. Heroes eventually realized that they were better off working together rather than apart, forming small teams of two or three. There is also a rumor that a group of superheroes have banded together, much like a guild from the middle ages, though there is no real evidence for such an alliance. Unfortunately, some villains have also been showing a tendency to work in small groups as well in order to counter the efforts of the heroes to thwart their wicked plans.

As if figuring out what to do about individuals with superpowers wasn’t occupying the governments of the world enough, humanity made its first contact with extraterrestrial beings just two years ago when several pieces of equipment detected radio waves that could be deciphered into a pattern of sounds that indicated language. A transmission was sent back by the U.N. once everyone agreed upon what it would say, and the planet was visited shortly afterwards by diplomats. These aliens were similar to humans in structure, but with reptilian scales, tongues, noses, and eyes. Fortunately, most people seemed fairly okay with their presence, and peaceful relations between the two groups were established. Since then, other groups of aliens have come and gone. With the extension of hospitality by the humans, all contact has so far been peaceful, though there are some who worry about a group arriving that may not be so friendly.

Despite all that’s gone on recently, the major issue that virtually every country is facing is what to do about metahumans, or those with superpowers. Aliens and recovering from the war are important, there’s no doubt about that. But in the scheme of people having bouts that causes millions of dollars’ worth of property damage a year, they really don’t seem to be all that important.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Your character is a hero, at least for the time being, that has been invited to join the rumored guild of superheroes. Whether they used to work for a team before or not, they suddenly found an envelope addressed to them holding a handwritten letter of invitation and a plane ticket to a small island in the Pacific Ocean. Whatever your character’s reaction to the invitation was, they eventually decided to accept it and fly out to the island where they met the man behind it all and got settled into their own room and everything. Some will have been there a little longer than others, but that’s okay. Of course, it’s not all a life of luxury. The man in charge, Dr. Raul, has been working on establishing branches in major cities to help deal with local crimes, but until then, he regularly sends out the heroes in the guild to missions whenever the situation calls for it.
Appearance: (Both normal and costumed. Please also provide a written description of both too) Costumed Derek's costume is a slightly baggy jumpsuit with armour on the outside and inside of it. Tubes filled with green, glowing liquids litter the suit and course through the gloves that he wears. Mostly everything on the suit is reinforced with metals, the tubes being the most reinforced.
Normal
Prototype Mask
Name: Dr. Derek 'Del' Osiris
Alias: Icarus
Age: 27
Gender: Male
Power(s): Super intelligence
Limits/Weaknesses:
-He's essentially a human inside a suit. Take away the suit and the gloves and he's just a really smart guy.
-His depression can make him reckless at times, to the point where he'll risk his life without rational reason.
-While he can charge his energy blasts, charging them too much can overheat them and possibly destroy them.
Equipment: laser shooting, strength enhancing gloves. His suit is essentially a robot in itself and can communicate with his computer at home. He also carries two small hunting knives in his boots just in case.
Personality: Del isn't the type of man to joke. He is constantly depressed by the world round him but rarely shows it. He tries to act at least neutral around other people. He doesn't act the same to his enemies. His knowledge of the human body and condition enables him to inflict as much damage as possible without killing his enemy. He is not someone to mess with if you're a normal guy. He cares for friends greatly, seeing them as the only people that can bring him happiness, he'd do anything to protect his close friends.
History: Del was born to a single mother living in a ghetto in New Orleans. His life was generally the same as everyone else in his neighbourhoods. He wanted to grow up, become a sports star or singer/rapper and never have to do any homework. It was not until he entered S5(whatever the American equivalent to that is) that his power kicked in. He had basically got into S5 out of luck and was flunking everything he took. His power kicked in at midnight as he was sleeping. His brain seemed to surge with electrons that jolted him awake and caused him to start pondering life and general subjects of concern. Soon the morning had came and Del was now a depressive. He began excelling at school even to the point where he could leave classes early to take other classes. In his spare time he wandered a junkyard near his house while collecting scrap for inventions. The first invention he made was an RC helicopter he made from everything but RC parts. The second was a lot bigger. The first prototype of the gloves he would become renowned for. They were a lot more basic than the seventh gen ones he wears now, instead of energy blasts these were nothing more than a bullet firing glove really. After leaving school he earned enough money selling his small inventions to go to University. He surpassed even the professors and his intellect grew each day. He majored in mechanical engineering but then advanced to Doctoring school to become a doctor.
His combination of intellect, craftsmanship and business skills helped him become rich. He started a small business that eventually sprouted and became one of the biggest businesses to be known. With Del managing behind the scenes and making new products. He became known for his fair pay and charitable events. Eventually the business fractured into smaller fractions including; Shipping, Medical, Electronics, Foods and even weaponry. Most of the weaponry went to the New Orleans police force though. Soon, Osiris industries was as big as Disney and life was good. This was the point when Del decided to become a hero. First he joined the military, much to the disagreement of his board of directors and generally everyone in the business. Del done this for two reasons, the primary being the training and experience and the secondary being the image. He left the military after being ambushed in a desert and being held captive for two weeks. The weeks went by like years. Del and his troop were tortured and starved to near death. Of course, Osiris industries couldn't let Del die.They supplied the finest goods and weaponry to the military and soon Del and his troop were returned to safety. Del returned to the normal world both physically and mentally scarred. He then went on a worldwide exploration, finding and learning from as many combat teachers as he could and donating a wealthy amount to the third world countries he had visited. After his exploration he picked up his mask and gloves. The mask was a plain black, steel mask that was soon t be less than plain. His gloves were now fifth generation, an upgrade he had made over his years. They were closer than ever to energy blasts now, more like mini railguns on his hands. His first night of heroing went well, he captured a few muggers, stopped a few rapists and even helped an old lady cross the street. Things went well for the first month or two, but on the third month things went bad. A mafia didn't like what Del was doing and set up an ambush for him. They captured him with only one casualty and set him up for torture. What they didn't expect was for the computer inside Del's suit to lock his mask and gloves into place. That didn't stop the mafia from giving him a beating from outside the mask though, soon its clean, steel was now scarred and dented. Del managed to escape by wearing the rope they had tied him in so much that he snapped out of it and took out the Mafia members watching him without the use of his gloves. He soon took down the mafia group and sent their members to prison. Things went like this for years on end, that is until he got sent an invitation.
Emilie Harron
*Red Rain*
25
Abilities* Heightened Pain Threshold and Minor Healing
Limits* Due to the nature of her ability, should Emilie undure any high emotional level, be it stress, anger, pain or dispair, sounds can reform on her skin, opening themselves up as if they never healed. See here for image
Personality*
Emilie is private, often keeping herself to herself. She has no intention of keeping her identity private, and never bothered to hide. She often deals with drug gangs and street crime, often running above the law. She has no issues with killing another upfront, however, it is clear this trauma effects her during her alone hours. No human is unbreakable.
History*
Emilie was on the road to potential Olympic stardom as her gymnastic talents were sufficient. She had never taken much care to her powers until she fell during a bad routine. Her hand slipped from the high bar and she landed in a heap. The pain should have been enough to paralyse another, however, Emilie simply stood and shook it off. Tested her new found power and slowly found all she could about it. She took up lessons with a now and bought a legal handgun. Several months of practise and Emilie took to the streets. She paired up with another two years later and together they watched the streets, avoiding the law by staying out of sight and rigging bodies.
Oh, um... When you said telepathy I thought you just meant mind reading...
Oh, I wouldn't want to drive someone out of the RP... XD
If Tali would be ok with it, I could scale my telepathy back to basic mind reading and add illusions as a third power. That way, I could still mostly follow my original concept without driving anyone off!
Here's an alternate version of the Geist, so that I don't run anyone off with a fundamentally disturbing power set (and, honestly, I think that I like this version better!).
Name: Kristof Liebniz
Alias: The Geist
Age: 23
Sex: Male
Power(s): Telepathy, illusions, and telekinesis
Limits: The biggest limit to Kristof's powers is the range of effective use. The range on his telekinesis effectively limited only by his own awareness (his practice with it has stretched his range far enough that, as long as he can see something without mechanical assistance, he can manipulate it to some extent, though both precision and efficiency drop off sharply once things have gotten far enough away).
His telepathic range is slightly more limited, but there is no real change in quality as distance increases, and he can boost his range somewhat by narrowing his focus (effectively allowing him to read the mind of anyone he can see, as long as he is willing to forgo his more general awareness).
Additionally, not having arms, while generally rendered irrelevant by his telekinesis, can prove to be a unique challenge, especially if he ever comes across an opponent that is somehow not susceptible to his powers, or is in a situation where his powers are suppressed or otherwise unusable.
Equipment: Kris carries only simple objects that can fit in his cargo pockets and specialized backpack, which uses a cross-strap setup to stay in place despite his lack of arms. (This includes a flashlight, binoculars, decent first-aid kit, etc. Mostly just small things that can be gotten fairly cheaply)
Personality: Kris has always been of a playful and upbeat mindset, seeming to see the best in any situation. He's always ready with a friendly smile, though it often seems as though he can't take anything quite as seriously as he should.
As the Geist, however, he shows that he is more than capable of taking things seriously (though he very rarely conceals the entirety of his playful nature, almost regardless of the context.
History: Being born without arms proved a uniquely difficult challenge (though Kris has only ever know that, so he doesn't exactly see it as such). Before his powers manifested, Kris picked up the habit of going barefoot, and developed an appreciable degree of fine motor control in his feet, allowing him to use them for many tasks for which most people would use hands. Once his powers manifested, however, he quickly became accustomed to using his telekinesis in that respect (though some of his foot-based habits still remain). As such, by the time he eventually felt comfortable enough with his powers to seriously consider going into the hero business, it was already fairly common knowledge that he was the telekineticist with no arms, so he needed to come up with some pretty concealing costuming to have any hope of maintaining anonymity.
Other: Kris wanted to choose a costume for the Geist that could be thematically relevant, cheap and simple to get, and still be very effective at concealing him (and his distinct lack of arms) from any observers. As such, he settled on a basic cloak and cowl, choosing a cloak that would be long enough to reach to the ground, and a deep enough cowl to shroud his face. In the event that someone does manage to get a good enough look at him despite his costuming choice, he maintains a minor illusion to conceal himself further, playing on one of the alternate meanings of his name by making it appear that there is nothing more than a spectral figure inhabiting the cloak.
Prior to the manifestation of his powers, Kris had decided to challenge himself, and took up martial arts, looking for ones that would allow him to focus on legs for offense and evasion for defense.
Appearance: 6'1" tall, has short black hair and a small beard, and twinkling green eyes. Decent, lean musculature, with a slight emphasis on his legs. Skin is a very slightly tanned Caucasian coloration. (No picture due to the nature of his most striking feature making accurate pictures for this particular build very difficult to find)
In costume as the Geist, he appears as nothing more than a spectral figure hovering in a black cloak and cowl, gliding quietly along the ground. (Still no picture, as every search produced images that display arms prominently, which does not fit my image of the Geist)
That's what telepathy is. It's just mind reading.
To be a mind manipulator, you'd have to actually have that power. I'd suggest refraining from that power, as it does make you a potential godmodel. What I do suggest is creating some kind of downside to the power.
@Dethran: Yeah, mind control is a no for certain. While there are some who could pull it off, there is way too much potential for abuse there. So yes, the second profile would work much better.
