honestly, if the experiments are important to the character, you could just make him a mechanist. a weaver-level mage with mechanist expertise might just be invaluable on a scuffed airship, too; that could be the reason he's allowed onboard. from what you've described, he does seem like more of a mechanic. just a suggestion!

@UnusualStranger Actually yeah, that's exactly what I felt. Just out of curiosity, how else can a late arrival be introduced?
Now, I do agree that a Mechanist will fit me the best. I just thought that Mechanists were mostly concerned with making living metal, not with delicate machinery of all sorts. Also, I kind of wanted him to make the elemental weapons, but I see this is not the case.
Actually, I do think I will offer a last compromise that will help; that my character is making complex and exotic weaponry, that includes parts influenced by other elements, but with the end result showing no signs of Elemental work (as an extreme example I am not going to include IC unless you insist : a magical rifle that uses a Fire component to propel a bullet instead of gunpowder)
Some of the experiments are going to come with him on board anyways. Since they are purely science experiments, however, I doubt they are going to even be noticed from the rest of the crew; they'll just sit in a corner and record data.
Aside from that, yeah, I do guess a Mechanist is the best solution, and a Weaver will work just fine; maybe I'll even state IC that the Academy refused to give him the Master rank because of his mad concepts.
Once again, thanks for your tolerance of my mistakes.

Now on to introduce my metal companion...

@hoppiholla391 That's actually a pretty good idea! I would guess Commander Hayes would get any help he could get anyways, but it's perfect!
Oh, and since our characters are coming from the same class and Academy, they will most likely know each other. Would you have any preference on which is the relation between them?

@Coga19000 hmm...good question! if he's been a weaver for some time now (since he couldn't have graduated classes while not at the academy) they probably didn't have many actual classes together, but if he's known as a somewhat kooky but skilled mechanist, vanahara's likely heard of him—especially if his leaving to study the Scar caused a stir. they both seem like introverts, though, so while they may have heard of each other they're probably not close—unless you had other ideas?

@hoppiholla391 Hmmm, not really... Unless you want to introduce as a supporter of Jonathan's theories. And yeah, his leaving the Academy probably did cause a stir...
Oh, you could also maybe state that Vanahara was trained a bit by Jonathan.

sounds good! as an ironworker, she probably had to 'learn' the basics of metalworking tools/apparatus from him, so one ex-student who knew all about that already when she entered the class coming right up~

@hoppiholla391 I do have changed his class to Mechanist by now, but yeah, that would work just fine.
Now whether you thought of him as a wide teacher or a lunatic, I'll leave that to be exposed IC ;)

@Coga19000: I noticed something about your character sheet.

This enabled him theoretically to reliably imitate certain applications of magics, up to this point restricted in regards who could use which, into constructions of Metallic nature ; allowing the wielder of a tool- say, a staff- to use said aspect -colloquially known as a spell- without being an apprentice of said element.
He tested and trained on this theory for years, in conjuction with Weavers of other elements, with which he studied all elements at the best of his abilities, and finally was able to create staffs that could imbue users power to execute a spell like ability, weapons imbued with a certain element and unique properties, and much more.

Stranger has stated that gaining access to Elements other than your chosen mastery isn't allowed, even in a secondary capacity that won't show up in combat, and yet the above quote is still a part of your character sheet even after the recent edit. If you intend to keep that part of the bio, giving your character access to even basic imitations of Elements other than Metal, you're going directly against his word.

A magical rifle? Definite no. Pistols and things like that are extremely rare in themselves, let alone magically imbued ones. And again, elemental imbuing is what other sub elements specialize in. And being a Mechanist pushes you further away from weapons, and more towards mastering more robotics than making metal weapons for others.

However, brilliant idea by hoppiholla391 to be a mechanist instead, as it would explain the gadgets much more effectively! And Master isn't something the Academy gives out, it is more a level achieved, and you don't tend to achieve it just doing things on your own because there is only so much that you can learn on your own!

And your arrival as in being a hut down below is perfectly fine. The storm is an amazing thing to investigate, for mage and humanity alike. And extremely dangerous.

And being a weaver means that he might have trained a few groups on the basics here or there, so that all fits very well!

@hoppiholla391

Excellent thinking and help :) Good good stuff, and its going to be interesting to see how you guys get along.

Don't worry, I already stated that such an example was simply to get the point through; I never intended to actually show up with a magical rifle.
Also, I was confused a bit because of one IC post that stated that someone failed on his test to become a Weaver- which made me think that this is how level progressing works in universe.
But I do guess my other his based on a IC post was a bit more accurate ; I took the impression from your very first post that Weavers are generally high enough in rank to assist Masters in herding the newer mages. And it does seem that Masters are generally few in numbers, so I thought that Weavers would cover some of the teaching part-time - after all, after a certain point, learning how to pass on knowledge is an invaluable skill.

@WriterRaven Don't worry, this is merely a writing artifact. As I have already stated, my Internet connection is scarce, so I decided to edit the critical info while I could and leave the bio for when I could work it better.
However, I do seriously consider leaving this as a part of his capabilities, and just have them never show up on actual combat, or in any way they could reliably help the mages. If UnknownStranger is okay with it, obviously.

honestly, i think even if you keep them out of combat and 'reliable help,' their existence will still establish them in world, and it looks like even that contradicts the setting. it might be better to just trash the idea—being a capable Weaver with knowledge of the Scar via original experiments is definitely unique enough.

@hoppiholla391's got the right idea. Besides, if they aren't going to help in or out of combat, what's the point in keeping them around? If an item, feature, or trait exists just to make a character special or unique, I feel it doesn't need to be there.

@WriterRaven I was thinking of it more of a plot device. But you know what? Your right. I'll just trash it.

EDIT: There we go; I finally found a computer with a decent connection, and it's off. Well, not entirely; Jonathan is still convinced this is possible, despite what his results have shown on this subject thus far.

Yup, the ship slid to a stop as it touched down.

"...That particular change lasted just a moment as the ship slammed and skipped along the earth..."

"...the ship lost what little altitude it had left as it had cleared the storms...After skidding along the earth with the metal hull taking a beating, the ship finally skidded to a stop..."

Indeed. The ship is now...somewhat clear of the storms. Still close enough that if you took a sprint you could probably get to the edge of it, but we are successfully on the other side of the storms after being bounced around from a ship meant for flying and taking cannon fire skidding along the ground.

@JoPo: I can't help but feel that your application draws some rather close parallels with my own character, Ling the Silver Vial.

Wasn't intentional, as I haven't read the other profiles yet. Actually was basing some of my story and appearance from a person in a card game.
