"Just as one fights fire with fire, dragons defeat dragons.”

Theme Song

High Casual | Fantasy | Medieval | Adventure | Gore

“The past is history, burnt embers and dust.”

The nation of Vankinore, a place where the sun rarely makes an appearance from behind the cover of clouds. Marshlands are numerous and the only respite from flooding is in the mountains which cover majority of the landmass. It is in these mountains that Vankinore had found its wealth. Once known as an inconsequential and dreary country full of drunkards, recluses and the occasional native islander, it was very quickly renowned as the greatest hub of gold and gem trade of all the Known Continents.

However, nearly six hundred years ago, the ruling family grew greedy in their grandeur and sought even rarer treasures which were rumoured to be buried deep underground. The mines dug ever deeper, but despite the miners best efforts, no gold nor treasure of any kind could be found. Eventually, the discovery of a tunnel system was made. Each tunnel was massive and near perfectly rounded. News of the tunnel system eventually made it up to the mines entry, but no further communication to the deep miners could be made.

There was only silence…

and then, from the depths of the mountains emerged scaled beasts, appearing like those depicted in ancient legends.

Dragons.

With keen senses, slitted eyes, armour like tenfold shields, teeth like swords, claws like spears, wings matching that of a hurricane and a breath of death, the beasts wrought havoc on the royal city. In a single day, the once thriving city of wealth became rubble and ash.

To combat these creatures, a slaying guild called Dragon Sodality was created.

The members of Dragon Sodality all wear dragonscale armour which is lightweight, manoeuvrable yet incredibly strong against all manner of dragon fire and cannot be penetrated by normal iron forged weapons. A member of the guild will only use weapons constructed out of Dragon teeth, horns and talons etc. since they will assuredly always cause a dragon damage and ultimately lead to its defeat.

The guilds first Master and creator was a man known as Deron Orion, who was a simple woodsman until coming face to face with a dragon. Armed with only an axe and a dagger, Deron confronted the beast as it tried to attack his family. Unfortunately, both iron forged weapons failed to impair the dragons hide and so, with only one option left, Deron lead the creature away from his family and into the rocky mountains. Pouring rain made footing difficult for both man and beast.

In one instance the dragon lunged forward but slipped at the last second, causing it to miss its target and break off a horn as it crashed into a cliff face. Seeing the appendage and it’s pointed edge, the woodsman quickly picked it up and armed himself with it. When the dragon lunged a second time, Deron ducked down and lifted the make shift weapon. Dragon sailed bare inches overhead and as its horn made contact with its under belly, a great gash opened up and out poured heated blood and internal organs.

The simple woodsman was thereafter known as Vankinore’s very first Dragonslayer.

“The present is always with us wherever we go…”

The recent age of slayers, some of whose bloodlines date back to vankinore’s incorporation into the Known Continents, have began to display enhanced attributes in strength, agility, senses, stamina or intelligence. Those with more than one of these attributes, however, have also displayed strange physical changes such as patches of almost scale like skin, pointed ears and/or sharpened teeth.

It is a never before seen occurrence,
but some believe that it is the Dragon’s Curse and others feel that it is the inevitable effect that all Slayers will face.

“He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster.”
~Friedrich Nietzsche

I am looking for:

  • Co-GM, who will be super dedicated, help with creating the plot, suggesting concepts and answering questions from players if I am not around. If you would like to apply for a role as Co-GM then do so below. Otherwise I am happy for everyone to be a co-GM.
  • 5-6 COMMITTED players. If there is a lot of interest, then I may have to select the people/characters who I believe will suit this particular rp the best.

So, have I tickled anyones fancy? Anyone interested in joining such an adventure?
Questions and suggestions are welcome.

Howdy! I have to say I'm pretty interested. Question, are dragons the only creatures we will be hunting? Things like giants, trolls, and the like. I think it would add a little more flavor but if not then I'm still game.

Hola!
You pose quite an interesting question. I hadn't thought about incorporating other creatures into the rp. They would be of a lesser threat than dragons, though I suppose it is always an option.

I was however, contemplating classing dragons into separate categories:
Domestic Dragon Subspecies
Regular Dragon Species
Element Based Dragon Species
Gigant Dragons
etc.

That would be cool, having variation is always a good thing. I just envisioned the giants and stuff as being fluff, something to do between glorious dragon battle. But again this is your baby, don't let me impose.

What are the power limits for these dragon slayers?

I loved the suggestion, I just didn't intend for Dragon Sodality to hunt anything other than well, dragons. Lol.

@Animal
Ah! Another good question :)
I was thinking that per character no more than two of the listed abilities can be chosen. Choosing one of the abilities will mean that the character could (potentially?) be less powerful than those who have two. Though a single one will be easier to control.

As for limitations to the abilities, I guess we can leave them up to common sense. However, I will mention that each ability will possibly be unique to each slayer. For example strength is the ability to lift great weights, but it could also be the ability to have impenetrable/steel like skin, or something like a shockwave clap etc.

@Absolute Grace I am very interested in this role-play! I haven't read other players' responses yet, so forgive me if this has already been asked, but we will be able to play as a dragon ourselves?

This account is based around what is called an "angel dragon" named Rhoo. So, naturally, I would love the idea of playing as a dragon. She would not be one of the dragons wanting to cause harm, but she would of course be wary of humans and probably try to attack one that came near.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance~!

Also, if you need a co-GM, I would be interested in assisting. Though I'm not experienced on this site, I am an experienced RPer.

Surprisingly enough that question has not yet been asked.
I was wanting for it to be an eventuality of characters becoming dragons. I shall reiterate this quote "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster." So for the beginning of the rp characters aren't dragons, they are dragon hunters. However, if you would like to be part of the first 'ark' as a dragon we can discuss details over PM or something.

I would love your help as co-GM, I haven't delved into a dragon rp before and it sounds like you are quite experienced.

Rhoo sounds like a really cool dragon and welcome to RPG, the site is really easy to get use to and the people are super friendly :)

I see, then what about the commoners who wields the dragon armor/weapons. Won't these tools have remnants of a dragon's power to use at their disposal? It would be interesting to see some kind of special squad created by combining the power of their armor/weapons which came from the same dragon.

Depending on the dragon that the armour/weapons are from then, yes, I suppose there would be a remnant of the dragons power. Most likely element based dragons such as a fire dragon being used to make a flaming sword or something. As for 'commoners' using dragon weapons, they can use them, but it doesn't mean they will last long in a fight.

A special squad would be pretty cool, however variety would possibly work best in such a situation.

welp if magic is allowed, and if the guild accepts outside help I have a mage who has hunted dragons before. If that's ok that is, also I like how u used smaug's monologue to describe the dragons.

Ah! Someone noticed. Thank you, yes I wrote this after watching Desolation of Smaug for the upteempth time XD

Anyway, unfortunately I wasn't exactly planning on allowing magic and it is more preferable for all characters to actually be part of Dragon Sodality. We could possibly work something out if you'd like though.

"I do what I do because it is the right thing to do. I am a warrior, and its the way of the warrior to fight superior odds."
~Paul Watson

Name: Freya Morhen
Alias: Cledwyn
Age: 28
Gender: Female

Appearance & Physical Characteristics
Height/Weight: 5'9/ 152 lbs.
Hair Color/Style: Fiery red, regretfully it was damaged in the line of duty and thus has been cut down to a manageable 3 in.
Eye Color: It used to be a storm grey but recently touches of sanguine have begun to invaded the edges of her iris.
Distinguishing Marks: Several small scars in multiple places around her body. The only big scar is a ragged claw across her upper back, beginning on the left shoulder and ending just at the bottom of the ribcage on the right side of her body. Freya also has several tattoos, a triskele located on her left jugular, a simple dragon coiling around a sword that has impaled its head that runs down her spine, and a group of tally marks adding up to eleven all on her right bicep. All of these tattoos are a pale blue in color. Finally the "Dragons Curse" has run heavily in her veins, giving her ears a small point, teeth becoming sharper, fingernails growing suspiciously like claws, and eyes becoming more like the beasts she hunts.
Clothing/Armor Style: Freya wares simple, functional garments that, while not winning her any beauty pageants, fit well on her frame. Her usual ensemble is a pair of leather leggings, iron tipped boots, a white top usually made of cotton or wool, and a leather vest. Her armor is almost completely made from dragon materials, with iron studs holding some things together. But beyond that everything is either dragon scale, hide, or bone. (reference the picture)

Personality: Strong, proud, courageous, hot-blooded, insecure

We fear violence less than our own feelings. Personal, private, solitary pain is more terrifying than what anyone else can inflict.
~Jim Morrison

Abilities: Freya has a reputation as being one of the strongest dragonslayers out there, able to lift a heavyset man without too much effort and in one of her more dire times kept a dragons jaws from clamping down upon her. She is also blessed with superior senses, touch, taste, sight, and sound all heightened greatly. However cities quickly overwhelm her her and as such tends to stay away as much as possible.

Brief history: The Mohren family has been apart of Dragon Solidarity since its founding, the profession of Dragonslaying being passed down from first born to first born until little Freya came out into the world. Since the day she could hold a sword her father trained her, teaching her the trade until little Freya wasn't so little anymore and father had gotten grey in the beard. It was time to go.

Freshly turned into a young woman, she and several other young slayers joined together on a hunt, trying to bring down a dragon massive in size. In their young arrogance they thought they could cut corners, become sloppy as they closed in on the lair before all hell broke loose. They all died, one by one they were picked off before it was just Freya and the beast. To this day she doesn't remember how it exactly happened, how it scooped her up and swallowed her whole. What she does remember is cutting her way out of it. How the stomach acids stung her eyes and nose, the thud of the beasts heart as it realized something was not quite right in its gut, the iron taste blood as she nearly drowned in it, and finally the ear shattering screech as she finally spills out of the dragon and its thrashing as she breathed fresh air for the first time in minutes.

She trudged back to civilization as the dragon died in agony, her armor destroyed and her weapons broken. Freya was baptized I blood, shedding away her naivety and innocence all in one blow. From there Freya's notions of glory and fame were crushed, making way for duty and humility to reign king.

Equipment/Inventory:
Beyond her armor Freya's most prized tool is her sword, Caladbolg. Technically a two-and-a-half hand sword, able to switch freely between using one or two hands. The blade was once a mighty horn, now shaved down and forged into the tool of war it is now. The hilt is iron and has been wrapped in dragon hide, the only thing left of her original sword. Beyond this she usually carries several daggers of both iron and bone with her at all times, weapons of last resort. Finally Freya has a large, well worn leather carrier bag filled with poultices', poisons, oils, and herbs useful for her hunts.

Possible full dragon form:
An angry and terrible thing. Freya's full dragon form stands upon two legs while her wings help travel along the ground. Her scales are a deep red, offset bey accents of blue along crevasses and the multitude of spikes upon her back. The tail is slightly longer than she is and is armed with a heavy spade like tip. Finally when she unleashes her fire it comes out as a concentrated stream of heat and anger.
