Dresden Files RPG

Hi guys and welcome to the game. This section is going to expand as I get more and more of the character creation rulebook written up for you guys but for now we have an important question to answer. Power Level.

I've already had someone mention they want to be a wizard so I won't be dropping the power level below chest deep(I'll explain below)

Chest deep: this power level gives us access to 8 refresh points, seven of which can be spent on powers and stunts, and 30 skill points with a skill cap of Superb(+5). This will enable us to use all base templates, although the most powerful like the wizard won't have much room for customization until we've levelled up a few times. This is the level that the alphas would be playing at as an example, or maybe a bunch of apprentice wizards at Molly's level or experienced minor practitioners. There is the potential for action but you will also have to remember that you will be stuck in the middle management of protecting those weaker, but still answering to those stronger.

Submerged: This power level gives us access to 10 refresh points, seven of which can be spent on powers and stunts, and 35 skill points with a skill cap of Superb(+5). This will enable us to use all base templates and even the wizard will have a little room for customization, more when we've levelled up a few times. This is pretty much the Dresden-level. At submerged level if something comes to punch your teeth in you can almost certainly punch back, or at least make them think twice. A good level if we're after political/intrigue games as we've all seen Dresden need to manoeuvre through White Council, Faerie Courts and others on the accords. Also a good action story level too.

This is the first decision I need you guys to make. It will start to shape the stories we can tell and determine your characters too. I will go into more depth about refresh points(basically skill points) as I write up more of this. For now just think of that one point you can't spend as your free will. You lose it by taking too many powers and your character becomes an NPC.

Although not an immediate decision I also want you to consider city creation. I can probably come up with a pretty good setting on my own. But the game make city creation a team thing. If you guys want to be involved in this then the first question we have to answer is what city should our game be based in.

I want everyone to have a say in this so I won't proceed too much further until everyone has voted. closing date
for this decision 25th next week at the latest.

I will update this section with skill and power lists next. After that will be character templates and a guide to creating your characters. I know at least one or two of you have the rulebooks so if you want to jump straight into character creation go for it.

I'm up for starting at Chest Deep or Submerged. Then again, I'm pretty confident in my knowledge. Of course I could go down to Waist deep or something too. That's not a big deal, though I'd have to come up with a different concept.

There are a number of good cities we could work on. I'd suggest Chicago since everybody knows it, but it's... a rough climate to play in, what with the Raith family, Marcone, CPD, and of course other elements.

These are just the ones I can think of for the United States. I'm trying not to give away too many elements for those not in the know.. and since I have no idea when in the timeline this will be taking place. At the same time, I'm trying to spark some imagination, maybe give an indicator of how those cities might feel.

There's also the Vancouver method of making our own fictitious city, which allows us as a group to come up with something unique.

Like Tearstone, I am comfortable enough in my knowledge of the Dresdenverse to play at any level. But, since you want us to pick I will go ahead and pick Chestdeep.

As for starting city, I think New Orleans could be a lot of fun.

Character Concept: Well, depending on the starting refresh I would go with either a Pure Mortal(Cop), Wizard (Warden), Knight of Summer/Winter Court or Knight of the Cross. I'm pretty flexible if anyone who hasn't played the game has their eye on something specific.

The one thing I would say about people chosing a 'class' is don't worry about what others pick and choose whatever looks fun to you. No two Wizards will be alike.

I'll give everyone until the deadline, but New Orleans does sounds very promising. Be interesting to play as a hougan or a mambo instead of a wizard. I'm going to start writing up templates next i think. Have you guys created DFRPG characters before?

I have.

On a side note, I might have another that's interested in this thing. My roomie/sig-o. AS for a hougan, I was thinking about that myself. Lot of thaumaturgy there.

The character I was considering is one Brandon Greene, a 'paranormal investigator' formerly employed by Allied Paranormal/Private Investigative Services (APIS), as a general investigator and 'occult expert'. Somebody that can handle things that bump back a little harder, and handle specialty situations. - He was involved in a relationship with the team leader for some time, romantically, a one Sakura Moyotada, but they split up a few years ago. After that, he packed up his book/new age store in Amarillo Texas and moved on. - I can easily see him moving ot New Orleans, especially to study Voodoo/hoodoo both academically and for magical pursuits, as well as keep an eye on them for the White council.

In his history I do have ties to Elaine Mallory, and possibly Warden Ramirez, but those aren't intended to do anything more than give him some flavor, and possibly give him access to a little backup from time to time. - He might have been deputized as a Warden as he does have combat experience, if this takes place during or post the Vampire war.

Of course, I can can this and start over with no problem. XD

That sounds like a really interesting character Tearstone. If you want to go ahead and start constructing your character while I get things written up for the others. Invite your friend along, but in all honesty if the group gets big enough I might have to get one of you guys to co-GM with me

*lurks about* He's been telling me about this game for a few days now. And I'm curious about something. Do you mind more then one character being played by someone? And do you mind someone playing a Fae?

I've made a bunch of a characters in the Dresden File RPG and have run a handful of games, so I'd be more than willing to help out when need be.

Hakai - By Fae do you mean a Changeling? Or an actual Fae Creature?

Since I'm pretty much in love with all of the 'class' types in the book I'll reserve my character decision until I see what everyone else is planning and then pick something to help round out wherever we are lacking as a group.

I mean actual Fae or Faerie. But if I was allowed to play this said character she would not be my main character more of a PC/NPC type.

I was thinking about playing a vanilla mortal. But who knows pretty much everything about the occult or where to find it.

How would this 'vanilla mortal' be so Clued In?
Wouldn't the White Council have a problem with this? - Does this not make them effectively a Mini-Archive?

With that much knowledge, it's unlikely they would be a 'vanilla' mortal, as knowledge is power. And to hold that much information in their head would take something unusual.

To put it another way... not even Bob the Skull knows all things about magic and the occult, and he's a Spirit of Intellect (and knowledge). Meaning he knows a lot about a lot, and a little about most anything. But even he doesn't have the end-all, be-all knowledge about a given subject.

It's possible to know that much, but I don't believe that would be in the realm of a 'vanilla' mortal. And not without something to help them out in this regard and some careful and detailed work and explanation. This is pretty much @yeti100's ballgame though so it's up to him.

Vanilla as in they cannot use magic.

And let me rephrase:
...who knows somethings and like to think he/she knows it all (and claims to know all) and instead comes off as an arrogant sod.

Just so there's no more misunderstanding.

Hakai I think one character at a time would be best to avoid confusion. Although if at the end of a story arc you wanted to change that would probably be ok. Pure fae are a bit tricky as they're bound to their natures, however if you wanted to create a character for me to control and use as part of the game then we could do it that way. Blue Demon I'd recommend either some kind of university professor who double majored in folklore or someone who owns a bookshop lol. You'd know lots about the occult, think you know more and be unsure just how much is accurate. Obsidian that is good to know, I may well call on your help for GMing in the future.

While I do own all three RPG books in hard copy, I also own 'Your Story' and 'The Paranet Papers' as PDF's.

I think that it may be best to do this in the order 'Your Story' suggests and go through the City Creation process first, then do the character creation so we can have characters that better fit whatever story you're trying to tell yeti.

I've attempted to run several 'on-line' Dresden Files games, but they always fell apart. However, something like Skype where we can talk and discuss things I find generally works better than a forum. But, that's just my two cents.

good advice Obsidian One. I would like to do something like that where we can talk, but everyone would have to be in agreement. I'll take this as a yes from you, if everyone else who reads this can say yay or nay. If we have full agreement it might be worth setting up on skype. Roll20 which i mentioned also has video or just audio chat capabilties.

If everyone can let me know yay or nay for audio/video chat then we can go from there

That's also a great sight to use.

Those of us that can use Skype can get a general idea for the city. Then you can post what we have here and everyone else can put in their two cents. I fear that people would have vastly different schedules, so getting us all on at once might not work.

Good plan. I'll leave the 25th as the deadline. Then we'll get everyone on skype or something similar who wants to and have a mass brainstorming session. Once the cities in place we can start on characters properly. If we make it that far then we can probably start the game lol

Hey guyss, I am sorry to say that life and work are starting to get one top of me. I am going to have to step down running this game. Very sorry about this. If one of you wants to take over then go for it, but I'm afraid I won't be able to help

Well, I'll take over then. I have the time and drive to complete the process.I've posted my idea for a game on the board already. However, if the majority of the group would like to do/play something different than I'm all ears.

Board found here...
