Warhammer 40K: Task Squad

The subsector "Magna Four" consists of motley collection of hive planets and agriworlds, coupled with the occasional new settler world as the thinly spread Imperial forces valiantly attempt to either spread the Imperium's boundaries or regain lost ground. Yet it is a subsector frought by war, conflict and lethal intriguing from both within and without. Many of the worlds are struggling with internal conflict, either in the form of criminals or upstart independence seekers, or a combination of the two. Another plague is the alien; violent masses of orks frequent the sector, ravaging, pillaging and destroying anything they can get their hands on, while the mysterious Eldar have also been spotted, sabotaging and waging their own secret war in the sector. And last but not least, the insidious presence of chaos threatens to corrupt the noble spirit of the sector, always lingering on the outskirts; and sometimes even found within.

Fearing that the imperial forces in the sector is not enough to keep the peace, Planetary Governor of the Hive World "Soliaire 2", Alphelius Marximus; a reclusive yet legendary old conqueror figure and rumored to be more than 400 years old; has called for the formation of elite task squads to strike like a spear into the hearts of some of these threats, preferably killing them while they are still in their infancy!

The people who make up these Strike Squads come from all walks of life. Guns for hire, elements of the official Imperial Forces, Psykers, adepts of the Mechanicum, ex pirates, pardoned criminals, missionaries, zealots, clergymen, pilots and men of the law. They have all come, whether lured by the promise of monetary rewards, a chance to serve the Emperor or simply to find a purpose in life.

To lead these squads, Planetary Governor Alphelius Marximus has summoned members of his own private household. One of these household members is Sherpa Silverlain, who has promised Alphelius swift results, or die trying...

Description: The idea of this roleplay is to create a squad of 3-6 active players to venture through the subsector to hunt down targets. It can be a little reminiscent of a bounty hunter game, as our Task Squad will be tracking down specific foes and dealing with them however way they like.

The master of the squad, Alhpeous' householdmember and leader; will be Sherpa Silverlain(also my character). The roleplay will start on the Hive World of Soliaire 2, in the visitor wing of Alpheous Marximus own massive palace on the planet where the team will gather and be briefed before heading off on their first assignment.

Requirements
- Ideally being able to post at least 2 times a day on a regular basis. Exceptions may apply if waiting for someone else. Breaks are permitted if announced in advance. Real life happens and we know this.

There are no hard requirements insofar lore is concerned. We welcome members who might even be completely new to the Warhammer universe. The most important asset any member to this roleplay can bring is an positive attitude and cheerful spirit. A roleplay is made by the people who participate in it, and it is my desire as a GM for this to be a great experience for everyone who chooses to enter it :)

The powerlevel of this roleplay will be relatively high, but there will be no Space Marine characters in this roleplay. That said, you may still create any character you wish other than that, even a non-combat character designed around support. Agents of the Officio Assassinorum, Sisters of Battle or members of other elite forces except Space marines are still allowed.

If you have any questions, please post them in the thread below. If enough players join, I will create the thread. A character template will be provided down below, but feel free to discuss your character ideas in the thread itself if you are not sure, just want inputs or share ideas.

You'd be welcome aboard, @Habib :)

I'm surprised our first interest was a Tech-Priest. Usually they tend to be among the rarest players.

Oh, every Inquisition taskforce needs the big hulking monster. Can I play a big hulking mutant monstrosity of flesh and steel?

With such a character, you would need an owner/master in order to traverse the Imperium without being burned on a stake, possibly a genator from the Adeptus Mechanicus or some other individual who would have a reason for dragging around a vat-grown mutant pet.

For it to work, you'd have to roleplay two characters, the master and its mutant pet. Kind of like the Ranger class in RPGs with their pets. Alternatively, you could wait to see if someone else in this roleplay wanted to be your leash-holder, and partner up with them.

Also, this Task Force is not related to the Inquisition(although we may bump into them if we are unfortunate enough). It's a private force created by the will of the planetary governor.

Well, would @Habib like a giant monstrosity of felsh and steel as a pet?

Alternatively, If he isn't interested, I have a secondary idea. Twin psychotic Sisters Repentia that work are his wranglers.

@Sinerathin I have no real knowledge of the warhammer 40K universe, but the RP does sound good. I have to ask you: what kind of weapons are allowed. I always use the same set in RPs but I am not sure if it suffices in this universe. My mind is set around an exo suit, a gauss rifle, and a retractable arm shield. Sort of an enforcer character. Or I would happily be the tamer of @mattmanganon if that is out of question. Till then cya around, and waiting for your response!

Fortunately for you, there is a massive list of all available weapons in the Warhammer universe over at lexicanum.com

Direct links to just some of the weapon lists(there are more!)

Having a Psyker is always useful... at least until they go mad or get possessed.

What type of Psyker were you planning on making when this thread starts?

I've got a character I'm actually using in another 40K RP, but I want to put them here too, so I can RP them in different situations. I'll have a CS up soon-ish.

So after many dreadful and sweaty (not really) research I have finally found what I was searching for (lol yk 5 minutes). What resembles a railgun most is a gravigun. But as far as I understand they are rare as f***. If that is no problem then I have made the CS. Also you said power level is quite high, and I would also be an Enforcer, so I took the luxury as a Warhammer 40K analphabet to make an equipment set that fits me the best. This means it might be REALLY OP.

If a custom Homeworld and IG regiment isn't allowed, I can alter it

Name: Corporal Caius Langston
Race: Human
Gender: Male
Age: 26
Class: Imperial Guardsman, Recon/Vox Operator
Equipment & Weapon:

Appearance Description(text and/or picture):

Traits(optional): Caius is very tough from years as a wilderness and recon scout for the Espurn 115th Recon Regiment. This has also made him an expert at stealth, CQC, and marksmanship. However, all this time spent in the wilderness without anyone to interact with besides his 2 former squadmates, so Caius is very lacking in regards to social abilites, and general casual conversation.
Biography(character backstory):

Notable Deeds or Accomplishment(optional): He once was able to warn a large force of Guardsmen about an impending ambush. The force was able to flank and rout the cultists in question, ending the battle far earlier than expected. He was also able to kill an enemy cultist leader from around 800 yards away, managing to highly extend the average range of his gun to pull off the shot. This shot earned him the nickname "Laser Pointer" in his squad, to compliment the infamous "flashlight" nickname of the lasgun. Caius has found recently that (highly exaggerated) versions of his achievement have begun to spread throughout the Guard forces, surprisingly enough. One such version had him portrayed as a Catachan sniper shooting from over 2 miles away, and another as a Cadian Whiteshield who got promoted to Sergeant almost immediatly afterwards. He's very quick to correct those who he encounters telling this story.

@6slyboy6

You can definitely be an Arbitrator(Enforcers are Arbitrators recruited by the Inquisition, but this group is not of the Inquisition) if you wanted to, but your character's backstory makes it sound as if Robert would be more of a Mercenary type.

One thing to keep in mind is that Arbitrators tend to be fanatically lawful-neutral, and can sometimes act as both judge, jury and executioneer. They expect an almost stoic devotion from their members. Think of Judge Dredd if you need inspiration.

I think a mercenary class might suit Robert, seeing as he is such an unsavory character. It's also easier to explain why he possessed such a rare weapon like the graviton gun, as you can say he found it when looting/scavenging, unlike the Adeptus Arbites, where they often have very standardized equipment and deliver all found goods to the administration.

As for Robert being @mattmanganon's leash holder, it probably wouldn't make much sense unless he was a member of the Adeptus Mechanicus, as I can think of few Imperial groups who would drag around mutant monstrosities(quite popular among the Dark Eldar though) and actually have the legal documents to avoid getting into immediate trouble. Another bonus of the Adeptus Mechanicus is that they usually have access to very fancy equipment as well, being hoarders of technology.

With a good enough reason for how Caius ended up in the task force, it would certainly work :)

After all, many regiments tend to be rather stubborn when it comes to lending their soldiers. Perhaps Caius could be part of a deal to repay a debt the regiment owed to the Planetary Governor of Hive World "Solaire 2".

You wouldn't have to change much. In fact, I'd say your current backstory for your character pretty much already makes you a Mercenary type character :)

Classes in this game are generally just a description of your character's usual profession, but what's contained within a class can be very broad and mercenaries are one category who are so wild and diverse one could hardly ever generalize them. Everything from armor, appearance, clothes, history, disposition etc tends to be very idiosyncratic.

And yes, for it to be reasonable to be a leash holder for such a beast, you'd most likely have to be in the Adeptus Mechanicus.

Not really. It'd have to be a human character, though it may also include humans with modifications, minor mutations, psykers or some human sub-category.

But other than that, it's pretty free what you want to be :)

Well, if you want to be Homn's handler, then you could easily state that your character is a Rogue Techie. Essentially, they are engineers that don't conform to the Mechanicus' way of thinking. This means they tend to be quite well equipped. Inquisitors tend to hire them due to their lack of belief in the Machine God. Say that he found him on some planet in the ass-end of no-where, but has a strange love for the Emperor so he decided to keep him around.

First thing you need to know about the Imperium, like any fascist regime, they are the biggest fucking hypocrites in the universe. I mean, there entire religion can be summed up as "There is only 1 god that we worship... But there is also another one and they may or may not be the same being" and even the machine worship is "Only human machinery is good, all alien machinery is the evilest thing to ever crawl out of Nurgles asshole." when half of their technology is nicked from alien races, including The Golden Throne that keeps the "Immortal" in Immortal God Emperor.
