So I just finished watching Steins;Gate and I can fully recommend that one too. (Notice a few others mention it)

Something to note is that the story does start a bit slow for the first 9ish episodes as it's introducing and setting up the story, but then it hits into overdrive without warning and really hooks you in.

So @Yin, add it to your list of things to see. ;)

Dang, you're fast!

Thank you for the heads up, I'm definitely giving it a go soon. ^3^

I don't know why but out of the blue, I decided to try xxxHOLiC for the first time and I think it's alright. The theme song is cool and the servant is pretty funny. I think it's sort of an "old" anime from the '00s.

Ran into a song that reminded me of Cowboy Bebop and later, of Samurai Champloo.

I gave Psycho-Pass a shot the other night but couldn't stomach an "abusive" scene in the first episode but I like its premise, I might revisit it.

...Though personally I find the original manga much better than the anime (same goes for Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle). I don't blame the animation studios because I know how difficult it is to make the highly-detailed costumes flutter, but the drastic simplification of those exotic design is quite off-putting for people like me who read the manga first before watching the anime.
Those two are my all-time favorite from CLAMP, other than Cardcaptor Sakura and Kobato. By the way I'm not exactly a CLAMP fan, in case anyone's wondering.

---

For those who like tear-jerker stuff, I'm sure most would have heard of Key's eroge-turned-anime such as Clannad - which I can never get past the fourth episode because it's too slow and boring to me - you can give AnoHana a shot.

As for peeps who are fans of Typemoon's Fate series, you should also try Kara no Kyoukai.

And a few mecha titles I remembered:
Broken Blade (or Break Blade in Japan) <- strongly recommended for those who want a change from the usual Gundam/Macross stuff
Asura Cryin'
Aquarion series
Captain Earth
Eureka Seven
Full Metal Panic
Star Driver <- for those fangirls who like pretty boys (you'll know what I mean once you start watching this...)

EDIT: Just want to say that God Eater has an awesome soundtrack.

Wow, it's so cool that this thread has a lot of anime fans who know more about series I haven't heard of than I do...

I saw a little clip of Edward's funniest moments from Cowboy Bebop and it had me sold. I'm going to watch it tonight once I get home and play it on Hulu so I suggest the same to you so maybe we can talk about it! Even more, as a group.

As for Psycho-Pass, I know which scene you are talking about since I had the exact reaction to it. Having liked the other themes and especially the Dominator (oh, and Akane too!), I want to continue forwards with it. I think you made a great decision turning to Darker Than Black though. I haven't finished that one but just because you mentioned it, I will now.

Good luck with your anime binge-watching!

Sword Art Online - the premise of this anime is that characters are trapped in a Full Immersion Virtual Reality video game, and have to defeat the boss to get out of it. The creator of the video game announces that if they die in the game, they die in real life. The anime follows main character Kirito on his quest to survive and win.
As for why I like it, the plot is great, the characters are well-developed, the world design is fantastic, and it makes me want to keep watching, to find out what happens next.
(BTW, beware of the end of the ALO arc - the bad guy then is a serious creeper. Bleh.)

Detective Conan/Case Closed - the premise of this one is that the main character, Kudo Shinichi, is force-fed an experimental drug by a mysterious criminal syndicate. The drug shrinks him down to a seven-year-old in body, but not in mind. Shinichi has two main goals: don't let anyone know that he's Shinichi, and find the syndicate and take them down. Unfortunately, there's the problem of murders literally happening wherever he goes. Good thing he's a detective, huh?
As for why I like it, the characters are well-developed, the murders are plausible but not too gory, there's a good bit of humor to counterbalance all the death, and the writing is well done and realistic.
(Also worth noting is another anime that crosses over with DC sometimes - Magic Kaito. It's about a magician thief who targets gems, seeking the gem that caused the murder of his father so he can destroy it.)

As for manga, I would recommend Kanata Kara, or, From Far Away. The heroine, Noriko, is catapulted from our world to another due to a terrorist attack. There, she meets Izark, the hero. They go on an amazing journey, dodging bad guys who are searching for the Awakening, a being that is said to be able to summon the Sky Demon, which is the most powerful demon of all.
As for why I like it, the art style is good, the writing is great, the characters are varied and realistic, the plot is great, and Izark is really cool.~

Mobile Suit Gundam (Char's Counterattack, Build Fighters, Wing/Endless Waltz, OO)
Gurren Lagann (Spelling?)
Hajime No Ippo
Sekirei (debatable there are some who are put off by the fan service but further in it gets better)
Baka to Test
Black Lagoon
The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzimiya (movie)

Oh, look a Kaito fan!

Well yeah, I do like Kaito as much as Luka, Gumi and IA - wait, that's about all the Vocaloids I actually like. Oh well.
(Gakupo V3 deserves a mention especially if it's tuned well. Plus his PVs are actually not bad.)

Another detective/murder mystery manga I would recommend would be Kindaichi Case Files. The cases are much darker than Conan with highly intriguing setups.

Hero Tales

Oh Sekirei. The manga is rather slow (feels even slower since it's a monthly release), but from third stage onwards things do get a little more interesting.

I couldn't finish Baka to Test - not a fan of the yandere girls and spineless boys dynamic.
I prefer Unbreakable Machine Doll, where at least the male lead would punish his yandere doll (not the dirty kind, mind you) when she went too far.

For Haruhi, I pretty much gave up on the light novels after Disappearance (which is the 4th book). The first was the best, but the subsequent volumes fail to impress me.

I'll give several less mainstream but good quality anime. They will unlikely fulfil the male fantasies 14 year olds and possess little ecchi.

Arslan Senki has good pacing, animation and interesting characters. The main character might start off frustrating to watch but his development is handled wonderfully AND realistically. You can really see him grow.

Mushishi has been hailed as a masterpiece even though it never achieved mainstream success. It has a relaxing and episodic nature. It won't give you crazy hype or make you thirst for the next episode but it's the kind of show that you watch and just go "that was really good..."

Ping Pong totally put me off with it's art style at first. I would have never given it a chance if not for the amazing reviews it got. Give it a shot, you'll ignore the unique or what some people consider to be ugly art in no time. God damn is it amazing.

Going into overdrive is the light way of putting. The way things kicked off had my head spinning.

As for my personal recommendation @Yin, I offer you Ergo Proxy (even though I think someone here has mentioned it in a list before). Set in a sci-fi/cyberpunk post-apocalyptic future, it follows the events after an ecological disaster on earth forcing humanity to leave earth. By that I mean the events happening on earth. At no point do they focus on the people that have left earth. At first it's a bit hard to follow in my opinion. But mid through and near the end you get these 'Aha!' moments and stuff starts making sense.

Another one I enjoyed that I don't think has been mentioned here is Guilty Crown.

I love this anime. I started from reading the manga then discovered the anime and watched some of the fight scenes and goddamn are they awesome. I highly suggest reading the manga as well as watching the anime since the anime only covers a small portion of the total content. Though the manga doesn't update often and is still in progress ^^;

As to my watched anime list, found in the hider below is all the ones I could remember watching. The ones with asterisks (*) are the ones I enjoyed most. The more asterisks, the higher the rating haha.

You don't really need to launch a colorful mecha into space and make them fly around in a dizzying whirl of colors to be awesome. 'Nuff said.

2015 Anime I Watched So Far - the higher the stars, the higher the rating
  • Haikyuu!! Season 2*****
  • God Eater* (the game was way better tho')
  • Owari no Seraph* (I admit that Yuu can be such an annoying dick at times but oh well)
  • Kyoukai no Rinne** (Sakura is eh but Rinne is quite hilarious sometimes)
  • Hidan no Aria AA (just when I thought I'm done with the shitty original series, here's a spin-off from that crap)
  • Shokugeki no Soma**** (foodgasm!)
  • Prison School (enjoyable only if you're those peeps who like the sadistic girls-masochistic guys dynamic)
  • Akagami no Shirayuki (it's Bones so animation is top notch, but story may not be everyone's cup of tea)
  • Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha ViVid (I feel like Nanoha is losing its drive ever since A's...)
  • Madan no Ou to Vanadis* (once you get over the fan service it's a decent anime - but don't read the light novel. You'll only be disappointed)
  • Seiken Tsukai no World Break (you'll need to force yourself to throw all your common sense out of the window...and there's no guarantee you'll still be able to finish this crap, sorry)
  • Kindaichi Case Files R*** (Conan is good with a thieving magician; how about a murderous psycho magician for a change? *smirks*)
  • Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works** (Typemoon milking more money with another retell of the Fate franchise, from Rin's POV)
  • Ghost in the Shell Arise: Alternative Architecture** (Stand Alone Complex is still the best imo)
  • GATE* (a different take from the SAO or Log Horizon kind of "trap in RPG" setting with some politics involved)
  • High School DxD BorN (worth watching only if you're into loads of ecchi)
  • Kekkai Sensen (it's so ridiculous that I have no idea how to actually describe this anime...)
  • The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan (only if you're a fan of the Haruhi series, otherwise eh)
  • Ore Monogatari!! (another shoujo anime which may not be everyone's cup of tea)
  • Shinmai Maou no Testament (see 'World Break')
  • Rokka no Yuusha* (it's oh-kay but the pacing is a bit rushed)

I love story lines like that. When it throws heaps at you to keep you interested but still stays calm and collected so you don't get confused as to what's going on. Steins;Gate is awesome cause time travel as a story central element is hard to write about, and this anime pulled it off perfectly.

On a side note, and seeing someone mentioning Parasyte... I think a Tokyo Ghoul/Parasyte crossover would be really interesting, both as something to watch and a potential role play idea.

Well the type of roleplays most anime watchers like to participate tend to follow a certain trend. Also, give Nobunaga Concerto a try~

If it has been mentioned already, then please forgive me, buuuutt--

Monster: Despite its rather intimidating episode length, it's truly one of the best anime series I've had the pleasure of watching. Like, if psychological mysteries are your cup of tea, I highly recommend it. Not a single episode within it comes out as useless. Even if some seem like filler - which I don't think that they are - it sure as hell doesn't feel like that. The plot, without giving anything away, is pretty much a really complicated game of cat and mouse.
Seriously. Give it a watch! I promise you that, when you're done, you will not regret it. <3

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood-
Another "one of the best Anime Adaptations" out there. It's more faithful to the source material. It also keeps the awesome humor that we all loved from the 2003/2004 series. <3 Length is pretty long, but worth it methinks. Not much else I can say haha

I would mention more, but I'm feeling lazy.

I shall give the list of anime I've watched later on. I cba right now. xD

Of the animes I've watched, and I've seen plenty. There's a few I'd recommend above anything else.

Kekkai Sensen. It's a crazy fun anime that mixes the mafia motif with the action of a superhero show, topped off with drama and wrapped together in a package that ties everything together nicely. Just when it feels a little slow it ramps up the action or starts the tearjerkers. It's one of the few animes I've watched five times already.

Baccano. The story presentation was interesting but not for everyone, with drama, intrigue and supernatural action rolled into one it has some of my favorite characters. It helps that I totally dig the mafia scene.

Durarara and it's other seasons. The character development is splendid, toss in some action to spice things up and it never gets boring.

Gurren Laggan. Mecha anime at it's finest. And a real must see. A lot of it is mostly action but there's a bit of drama in there for character development. But the fights are spectacular.

Kill La Kill. Skimpy outfits and a plot with some great storytelling, just compliment the over the top action. I bet they could have done just as well without the skimpy outfits and relied on plot alone, but well at least we got plenty of fanservice.
