Age of Mythology

My soul is wrought to sing of forms transformed to bodies new and strange! Immortal Gods inspire my heart, for ye have changed yourselves and all things you have changed! Oh lead my song in smooth and measured strains, from olden days when earth began to this completed time!

"In the Age of Antiquity, when Greece was the light of civilisation and Rome was nought but a village in the Italian peninsula, all else was a dark place full of mystery and wonder. The surrounding lands were full of barbarians and blood-thirsty enemies, or so it was said.

Yet in this time, above all others, the gods directed the fates of their people and demi-gods walked the earth. Legends such as Herakles and Theseus, and before them those of the ilk of Akhilles, Odysseus and Pelops.

Now is the time when great legends are forged and mythology written by those who were there or the most imaginative of writers afterwards, it is a place where magic is not entirely extinguished and where a mere mortal may change the fate of the world if the gods do will it."

Genre:

The quasi-historical, yet strangely fantastical, world of Archaic Europa and the Orient; think Homer - and thus the Iliad/Odessey - or think Xena: Warrior Princess, or the classic Jason and the Argonauts film (still good!) And you should get an idea of what I'll be going for with this.

The Setting:

This RP is set in the ancient past of our own world, shrouded in mystery by the fog of time and yet set in stone by the beliefs of our forefather.

Here is a world of which Greece, not yet a nation but more a collection of city-states (poleis), is the very centre and from it comes most of the information of the 'known world' at the time. It is a time filled with the fantastical - the centaur and the Hydra, the Gorgons and Pergasus - of exotic lands like the island of Circe, or the oriental powers of the East, seen by the Greeks as effeminate and decadent.

It is RP set in the wild lands of fantastical Ancient Greece and the known world surrounding it.Here be monsters of legend, both of the human type and the more mythological type, but here also are great legends ready to be made through the rush of combat and the skill of their diplomacy.

I shall begin, if it is alright with all those interested, by gathering together a crew for a vessel - in classical Argonauts style - before setting off on our adventure(s). There shall be no demi-gods here, so don't even think of it, but mortal men possessed of keen intellect, keener blades, and maybe a unique skill or two.

Think Odessey rather than Iliad, Argonauts rather than Twelve Labours...

This is not to say that there won't be challenges of that ilk found within, indeed I intend to shove a Hydra or a few Centaurs in here-and-there, it simply means that no-one (yet...) would be able to massacre them without help and a good deal of planning.

Esssntially we are dealing with the Greek Heroic Age, probably post-Troy but pre-Classical. This can helped be decided by you, the player.

Things of Note - Please Read

    - This setting is during the fuzzy grey area between the Archaic period and the Classical Greek period, a time of gods coming to Earth to help or hinder mortals, and of great demi-gods like Herakles and Perseus. There will be no specific date given though.

    - The Gods are an important part of this RP and, while no-one shall be able to RP as one, any player would be wise to keep them appeased and on their side. Those who lose the favour of, or displease, the gods should probably take cover.

    - You do not need to be a historian to RP here, and I'll be around to assist anyone that might have any questions or problems.

    - Be inventive! Your character can come from almost anywhere in the ancient world, as long as they have a reason, and will most probably possess a set of skills that make them stand out from the common day men or women.

    - The group will travel by sea, mount or walking, so you may want to see this as a good time for character interaction and development.

    - There will be no true magic; what I meant by this is that 'magic' will be very much to do with ritual, worthy sacrifice, and whether the gods are listening to your plea. There'll be no wizards shooting fireballs or anything like that.

    - Writing requirements would be somewhere around 'low advanced - high casual'; I don't expect novels from anyone, and will readily allow a few mistakes here and there, but you need to be able to string a paragraph together.

Character Sheet

Please submit your character sheets by TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13th. Please PM the completed sheet to me first, and after I have approved it you may post it into the Character tab of this thread.

Name: Your character's name. A pretty obvious one, so enough said, just please attempt to keep them IC - no Greeks named Erasmus Johansson, or Keltoi named Hanz Esponensa.

Age: Obvious.

Gender: Obvious.

Origin: Are they a Kelt, a Greek etc etc? Could you also please, if Greek/Hellenic, include their city-state of birth I.E. Athens, Argos, Korinth and so on. If you're a non-Greek then feel free to do that as well - include your city/town/village of birth- might just be a wee bit harder for barbaroi

Religion: To what God(s) do they pray, if to any at all? Atheism was rare in the Ancient World, but still existed.

Appearance: A written description of your character's appearance. No pictures. Please include here any weapons they may have, and any armour or clothing as well.

Personality: What kind of person is your character, what are their motivations etc, and how do they interact with others?

History: A sketch of your character's life and history up to the point of arriving in Greece, which is where we shall begin our questing; give me three solid paragraphs, at least, please.

Skills: What skills do they possess, how did they come by them, what have they used/been using them for?

Equipment: What do they bring with them/carry on their person? Be sensible when deciding, as weight and wealth are both an issue.

Miscellaneous: Anything you want to mention but haven't been able to cover yet.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Hi
Please will you consider the following character for your game?

Name: Nmemosyne
Age: 19

Gender: Female

Origin: Greek

Religion: Apollo and Artemis and Leto

Appearance: Nmemosyne is small and shapely, with typical Greek features. Her dark brown hair is curly and she always has it piled up on top of her head, tendrils of it are always trying to escape.

Personality: Nmemosyne is a happy and outgoing woman who will get on with anyone. She is welcoming, but takes her belief and the reverence of the gods very seriously.

History: She was born to a Priestess at the Oracle of Delphi. She was brought up in that sacred place and taught to worship Apollo. She also worships Artemis (his sister) and Leto (his mother) as she very strongly believes in family. She is Prophētai (prophet) at the Oracle of Delphi. She has an older sister who is a Priestess at Delphi whom she loves dearly and is very close to.

Skills: Nmemosyne has a superb memory and can also write. She learnt these skills from the Priests and visitors to Delphi. Her calling as a Prophet comes from the dreams she receives which she attributes to Leto.

Equipment: Nmemosyne has a cloth bag that she slings over her shoulder. Inside the bag is a leather folder which contains sheathes of parchment for her to write on, as well as charcoal sticks to write with.

Miscellaneous: She wants to leave the Oracle and record the deeds of men rather than the mutterings of gods. She wants to see more of the world. She is a virgin, keeping herself pure for Apollo.

I will state that this is most definitely an intriguing concept to me; having both taken latin and having researched greco-roman mythos to a modest extent over the past three or so years. Of course, I likely will not have time to do anything more than spare this lore a cursory glance until tomorrow afternoon, but still, I am interested.

Definitely interested in this, I'll be starting a CS today.

On another note, have you by chance read the Long War series by Christian Cameron? It follows the Greek wars against Persia from the viewpoint of a greek hoplite in an amazing narrative first-person format. This RP really reminds me of that series - definitely check it out if you haven't.

@VoiDAh, good to see another to join our motley crew!

If you mean the novels recounting Cameron's own version of Arimnestos of Platae, then you have named one of my favourite series' of historical novels - and, believe me, it takes a lot to make me like a historical novel.

I take it that you'd be a fan then too, VoiD?

I adore them, haha. He's probably my favorite author. I'm very excited for Dread Wyrm as well, and his medieval historical fiction series about William Gold is superb.
