@Minimum ...Did you edit the character sheet you posted earlier? If so, I almost can't tell. It's barely any different and still extremely low-effort.

@Ryuzaki I think I got confused because you put your expanded interests in your history section and then forgot about it, sorry! You can put it in the character thread.

@Lady Horatio I like Alex, well done.

@Slendy Lui's fine, welcome.

@BubbleGumKing His interests section feels a bit like an extension of his elaborate personality, but overall he's fine. Welcome on.

Also, in case anyone's wondering about start schedule: I still have to write up a bit of a description of Avernale and a player who's stated interest off-guild and might be turning up. After that we'll kick off.

@Antarctic Termite

I revised a few areas, but I noticed I just changed the flow of thing so its not much but I finished the areas that weren't done. Then after doing that, this was the fleshed creation that I created.

I finished a panel in the OOC for setting. No, I have no idea how large cities are actually supposed to work. Yes, the Avernale Financial Spire is almost a kilometer tall and still not the tallest skyscraper in the world- It's 2021, so the 1000m Kingdom Tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, will have been finished by the time this roleplay takes place. Feel free to ask any more questions about the city, if you have them.

Thanks, Wikipedia!

@Keyguyperson I know you're not quite finished yet, but nonetheless Emre feels very relatable. Solid character, welcome on.

@BubbleGumKing Qunin (Quinn? Quinine?) still seems pretty fluid, so he's still accepted, though again, the interests section reads more like part of who he is than a glimpse of what he might do, what inspires his imagination.

Best I can tell is you just grow a hundred different small villages and towns bigger until they overlap and become a single place. And every ten or so years someone else decides how urban planning should be done, so there's no major consistency, plus you've got to work around the shape of the land, the river, the coast, listed buildings, protected views...

London is pretty crazy with those - mostly concerning St. Paul's Cathedral. And buildings are pretty small, and very expensive in the city centre.

Hwo do you get around this? Dig down! Have a new basement or three. And once you've dug it out, you've got a new problem. How to get the digger out again... I mean, your place is too small to set up ramps... and you had to take out one wall to get it in, but to send in a crane would need the upper walls and floors taken out too... and it would mean closing the street... That's really REALLY expensive..

This is why most luxury London houses have a drained, part-stripped and tarp-wrapped JCB buried in concrete under them, like a strange mechanical Pharaoh.

So to summarise how big cities work: You make it up as you go along.

Also if you need help to build your city, look at this checklist (it might not be complete but it'll help) :

-Why is the city built where it is?
In europe during the Middle Ages, people often built their cities according to 3 factors :1) Water/food access (rivers were largely preferred due to the abundance of both, and also allowed trading), 2) Militarily easy to defend? The town I come from is in the loop of a river and on top of a hill, so if a bunch of soldiers came running at it, they'd likely be dead by the time they reach the city gates since there's only one way to get there. 3) Trading is facilitated there/locals are nice and we want to trade with them. Big cities are often situated along some sort of water site which allows them to get heavy and valuable things to other cities way more easily. The best cities were a mixture of all of them.

-When was it built? This determines the presence of old neighborhoods and whether they could be used as a way to attract tourists. But old cities also says less tolerant inhabitants and more rampant racism. (See : Europe once again). Also, old cities have more small and sinuous roads, whereas new cities tend to be quite squared. (For example, compare Bordeaux to Abu Dhabi.)

-What attracts people there? Is it jobs created by a particularly large industry (Like Detroit and its cars)? In that case, much of the old city will be situated around that industry. Or is it like Las Vegas or Los Angeles? Anyhow, you need to determine the prime industry of your city and how people would try to live around it.

- What keeps people there? Is it a good quality of life? Is it the attractions around the city? Etc, etc.

-Is it important enough to have an airport? In that case, a large part of the city would be dedicated to trading and storing the goods- a lot of warehouses would be around the airport (Same with a port)

-RELIGION. What is your city's first religion? Is it christian? Then a lot of churches and cathedrals would be around the city. If there are ten million people there, there would also be a ton of different other cults so mosques and synagogues would be there, but less prominently than churches.

-Industry. Is there a large manufacture sector? Does your city import or export more? What does it import/export? Or does it only import? There's bound to be an industrial sector anyways, but how big would it be?

-Business. Would it be attractive to companies? How so? Is there any natural resources/legislation that would draw the companies to build things there? Would some of them have their headquarters built in the city?

I'm sorry if this is a lot, but I am particularly fond of history and those are most of the factors that people can find in most nowadays cities. Feel free to message me if you need any help :D

Going to write up a starting post soon- Today or tomorrow.

Sounds like the premise for a robot revolution story. Beneath London, we abandoned the diggers... But they kept on digging. Soon, they rise again.

Anyway, cheers! I'll add in a snippet about underground space around the built-up north, since that's definitely where it'd be most encountered, and I'd love it if someone set up a literal basement cult.

@Polkadancer Carin reads well! She's accepted.

Otherwise, I feel like I covered all the points you mentioned in the settings tab pretty well already, other than the specific history of the settlement and religious background (ironic, isn't it). I'll add more about that soon.

To recap some info from the first post for you: Avernale is built on the mouth of the river Lethe and the entire west Makarya region has a long history of agriculture and fishing, so neither food nor water are a problem, and being on both the river and the Pacific allows it to trade with the interior of the island (city of Mictlan) and serve as a stopping point between Japan, Korea and Kamchatka (Russia) to the west and Canada and the US in the east.

Most of the city is comparatively young, though I'll give it an older segment in the edits. It gets the majority of its wealth from offshore oil refineries (hence its own oil giant, Yomi Petroleum), though it has a huge industrial sector in its north fueled and supplied by that, and obviously benefits a lot from being Makarya's main port. Avernale is a world city, so I obviously mentioned the Avernale Global Terminal and the seaport and the factories built around them, as well a vague description of tourist attractions and some nice things for investors (Pacific Central Telecom and Avernale Financial Spire towers, which I expect you will all soon compete to go Godzilla on).

Basically, other than being a bit vague about its age and how its cultural influences affect it, it's all already there!

Basement Cult? As in they meet and worship in the basement of one guy's house? I could possibly do that, Friday Night Magic yo! Except the worshipers can really walk planes and use creatures that Darren made, for a price...... >:)

We have some setting edits regarding religion, basements, and a bit of history. Might still have tiny touch-ups to do though.

Yep! Meeting in people's homes and any other empty space they can find is a fairly common way for cults and religions to start, after all.

[@Antartic Termite] Just wondering, would there just be one huge thread for the entire roleplay or several locations in which the players can interact?
