Individual -4- State
Religious -4- Secular
Democracy -4- Autocracy
Dove -3- Hawk
Isolationist -4- Interventionist
Summery: The Courbonnais government is a powerful entity that ruled by a hereditary Emperor with three councils below him, the hereditary noble houses, the technocratic council, and an elected council formed by men chosen every 3 years in an election any landowner may participate in. The rule of the Emperor is absolute with his word as law though as history has shown most in the modern era head well advice from the various councils. Individual rights are apparent though curtailed in various areas as well with wealthy landowners having greater personnel freedom than the lower classes who. The government is increasingly imperialistic in policy overtaking nearby lands and when possible and attempting to dominate air and naval trade lanes to maintain the high standard of living of the country.
Economy:
Capitalism -2- Communism
Private -3- Public
Inequality -3- Equality
Summery: The Velosian people who make up the core of the Dominion were strong believers in the strength of the individual and using that strength to empower the whole. This lead to a strong merchant class early on. With the wave of industrialization though the economy almost faced collapse and as a result the government has been forced to step in to maintain various structures such as oversight on the banking system to avoid such dangers again. Much of the original idea remains though with industrialists and merchants striving outwards ever more to acquire more wealth and then moving that wealth in the Dominion's economy to strengthen the country.
Society:
Open -2- Closed
Liberal -2- Conservative
Tolerant -2- Intolerant
Summery: Courbonnain society is based from 4 distinct cultures and is affected by the cultures of the smaller city-states and nations it absorbed as well. This amalgamation resulted in a generally understanding and open society with strong beliefs towards judging on merit before all else. There is an official religion based on the pantheon of the old Aldros Empire but is followed by less than 40% of the nation. The official language is only known in the far corners of the Dominion part due to the standardized schooling system put in place barely a generation ago. Overall the nation is accepting so long as you look towards making the Dominion itself stronger due to nationalism which has slowly been growing since the beginnings of industrialization.
Military:
- Coat of Arms:
- Size: 1,600,000
- Branches:
- - Army: 1,000,000
Long the core of the defense of The Dominion the army has a great and storied history. The army favors a general doctrine of wide front warfare with armored spearheads to punch deep into enemy territory on offensive operations. Defensively they are drilled to dig in on any defensible position and set up large numbers of mortars and field guns. Discipline is favored by most standing units fighting the hard line combat. Thanks to the industrialization the regiments of the army are well equipped with modern small arms and a large ratio of field guns to infantry formations while armored formations are dedicated units meant to break through and exploit weak points then role up enemy flanks as infantry units advance behind them.
Equipment
Frieper 37 - The standard issue pistol of the Dominion Armed Forces. It is a double-action pistol with a a high muzzle velocity and fires a 10mm round from a 9 round magazine. Known for it's reliability and ruggidness the pistol quickly caught on as a secondary weapon within the armed forces and is now produced in vast quantities.
Tournier 27 - A single action 10mm revolver still in use by the Dominion Armed Forces. It has largely been replaced by the Frieper 37 model pistol though. It is predominatly used by pilots or personnel not likely to engage in frontline combat or need a weapon capable of taking a savage beating while still functioning.
Fusiline 29 - Formerly the standard rifle of the Dominion Armed Forces though now being replaced by the Fusiline 38. The Fusiline 29 is a bolt action 7.5mm rifle with a muzzle velocity approaching 1,000 m/s making it highly accurate and lethal and long ranges. As a result even though in standard use it has been almost completely phased out marsmen and sharpshooters still commonly use it and is a well liked civilian rifle.
Fusiline 38 - Newest rifle in use by the Dominion Army the Fusiline 38 is a semi-automatic Gas-operated, rotating bolt rifle. Chambering the same 7.5mm round as the Fusiline X it is effective out past 500m and in skilled hands with a scope can consistently strike a man sized target at such ranges. It feeds from a 10 round box magazine with a high reliability and is tested extensively for use in mud or sand.
Bref Fusiline 39 - Designed for use in more compact spaces the Bref Fusiline X is a cut down version of the Fusiline 38. It's size is reduced to less than 1,000mm and fires the same cartridge as the Fusiline 38. It is meant for specialized uses such as artillery crews and paratroopers.
Bref Matriline 37 - Standard submachinegun of the Dominion Armed Forces the Bref Matriline 37 is a short compact weapon firing 10mm pistol rounds from a 25 round box magazine or 50 round drum magazine though the drum magazine is rarely seen in use outside the Imperial Guard. The range is only 200 meters though that is sufficient for it's use to clear out enclosed spaces such as trenches or aboard ships.
Matrilien 36 - Firing a 7.5mm high velocity round the Matrilien 36 is the machinegun of choice for the Dominion Armed Forces. It is a gas-operated open bolt design with an effective range of 2,000 meters. The standard cartridges has light anti-material capability with more powerful cartridges commonly carried capable of penetrating through most light armor though due to size and weight requires two men to carry.
IVK-seriesSlowly being phased out or upgraded the IVK series of tanks was the first major tank series launched by the Dominion and was produced in vast quantities being steadily upgraded over time. It now serves many roles and is still the most common tank in the Dominion Army with a dozen variants still in use.
C/IVK-150 - Armed with a 150mm howitzer this variant acts as close range artillery support for infantry with a 150mm gun replacing the turret gun, it is open topped which makes it more vulnerable to infantry however. The hull mounted gun is a 90mm howitzer which increases it's line of fight firepower even more and has two 20mm autocannons in sponsons on the sides
LK/T/IVK-T - This variant one of the newest and is produced in small numbers so far, the hull mounted weapon is removed leaving only two 20mm autocannons in sponsons and a 75mm tesla cannon as the main weapon. This is designed as a tank hunter where even if the first shot does not penetrate it will ablate much of the armor of the impact zone as well as superheat the metal causing fractures and spalling of the armor.
LK/IVK-100 - The most common IVK variant this one carries a 100mm gun firing high velocity anti-tank shells. With 120mm of frontal armor it has solid anti-tank power and also carries the standard 20mm autocannons and a 90mm howitzer in the front. The armor is upgraded from the original and as a result the overall speed has been reduced to 40KPH.
TVK-100One of two new medium tank designs recently begun production and distribution within the Dominion the TVK-100 has 150mm of frontal armor and a 100mm main gun as well as a top speed of 60KPH. This gives it solid reliable firepower, protection, and above average speed when compared to most contemporaries.
TVK-125The second of the new line of medium tank designs. This one is armed with the 125mm gun with a higher velocity the gun is quite fearsome even at long ranges. The armor is also increased to 200mm and while it has a larger engine the overall speed drops to 55 KPH and is worse over soft ground.
CVK-2 Heavy Self-Propelled GunArmed with a 175mm howizter and thick armor the CVK-2 is a breakthrough tank. It has a slow top speed and the high weight make traversing soft ground difficult but excels at destroying hardened targets from enemy armor to fortifications and carries a large payload of High Explosive shells making it highly effective as direct fire artillery on infantry. It is seen mostly with infantry formations supporting them.
CVK-3 Heavy Self-Propelled GunDeveloped concurrently with the CVK-2 it shares the same turret however the 175mm howitzer is instead married to a quadrepedal chassis allowing it to traverse higher slopes and more difficult terrain at the cost of speed.
AVK-7 Heavy Assault GunArmed with a 155mm gun and mounting 500mm of frontal armor the AVK-7 is one of the largest and most heavily armed and armored armored units employed by the Courbonnais Army. It is designed to shrug off even the heaviest enemy guns with even the side armor exceeding 250mm is depth though the slow speed limits it capabilties to infantry support as it is easily outpaced by most other armored vehicles.
A/LKVK-6 Medium Tank DestroyerThe A/LKVK-6 is one of the most commonly seen AFVs in infantry formations of the Dominion Armed Forces. A tank destroy capable of operating as an assault gun it lends significant firepower to infantry formations where the turretless design can be easily supported by infantry. Armed with a high velocity 100mm gun it generally utilizes HVAP ammunition to better destroy opposing tanks at long range even when heavily armored. It has a top speed of 65KPH making it a highly mobile weapons platform.
LKVK-7 Medium Tank DestroyerA modern tank destroyer armed with a 125mm gun it carries almost exclusively HVAP rounds mean to engage tanks about it's own weight class or hide and ambush opposing armored columns. It's armor is rather thin though has a powerful engine allowing it to reach 75KPH rather quickly. With it's gun and speed this tank destroyer is able to be moved into and out of battle easily able to decapitate enemy deep strikes and withdraw before pitched battle can commence.
DVK-1 Heavy Tank DestroyerThe newest AFV to see mass production and the first of it's type. Armed with a monstorous 200mm main gun and a pair od turreted 90mm guns on either side along with 2 paired autocannons to either side and 2 forward mounted autocannons. The armor is spaced and 300mm thick at the front. the turret cannot rotate fully rotate but is a second line weapon as it is a tank destroyer rather than an actual tank meant to destroy the largest and most powerful enemy tanks fielded.
LP 20
A 20mm rapid fire high velocity autocannon used for anti-aircraft capability generally used in groups of 4.
LP/H 75
75mm long range anti-fighter/airship cannon with a long flat trajectory to make accurate fire against weak points on airships possible.
LK/LP/H 100
Originally designed as a self-propelled anti-aircraft gun mounting the LP 90mm cannon the high velocity and flat trajectory that made it so effective against both airships and fighters also leant it to anti-tank capability and after a short battery of field tests has begun deployment as such being circulated throughout infantry formations.
LK/LP NK 100A self-propeled anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapon meant to provide direct support to infantry formations. It is a basic chassis with the highly effective LK/LP 90 married onto it.
Towed Artillery guns
The Dominion Armed Forces utilize long range gun batteries in 100, 150, 200, and 250mm sizes as well as 50 and 100mm mortars employing them in very large numbers with company sized units often having attached batteries and regiments generally fielding more than one battalion of towed guns.
- - Navy: 500,000
Dece Interceptor
A lightning fast and nimble single engine aircraft the Dece is armed with 4x 20mm guns and a maximum payload of 500 kg. It's range is only 1,000km with a max speed of nearly 1,000 km/h. It has a rate of climb of 35m/s with a ceiling of 15,000m. it's strength relies largely in it's maneuverability as it can outturn most fighters it would engage.
Fiadre Heavy Fighter
A twin engine fighter armed with 2x 20mm cannons and 6x 10mm guns. It has a maximum payload of 2,500 kg. The maximum range is 3,500 kilometers and max speed of 750km/h with a climb rate of 25 m/s and ceiling of 15,000m making it a a very powerful fighter with good range and speed thanks to the powerful engines.
Tonnerre Heavy Bomber
A four engine bomber with a 10 man crew meant for long range high altitude saturation bombing. With a maximum range of 5,000km and ceiling of 15,000m it can strike at far away targets at a height many AA guns will have difficulty firing at. It has a maximum payload of 5,000kg and speed of 500km/h.
Chasseur-class DestroyerDesigned to screen larger ships or hunt down ships of the same or smaller class it is very fast with 4 large engines. It is armed with 24 turreted 150mm guns giving it good fire all around for shredding lightly armored vessels or fighters. When engaging larger vessels where the 150mm guns would be more difficult to use it carries 10 tubes for firing long range aerial torpedoes and rockets. Each side also has 3 forward aimed tubes set off-center and there are 4 rear facing tubes as well making it all around a fearsome predator of the skies.
Marteau-class Battleship
In many ways an enlargened
Chasseur with 15 turreted 500mm guns positioned along the mainline. It's secondary armaments are 20x 100mm guns, 24x 50mm guns, and 50x 20mm guns for engaging manner of targets. It has the same large style of engines allowing it for a high speed though armor on it follos the "all or nothing" doctrine with only key areas being armored more than minor amounts.
Imparable-class Aircraft CarrierFew in number the
Imparable-class can carry as many as 100 aircraft in 10 squadrons of 10 though depending on aircraft carried is often fewer. Generally escorted by entire squadrons of smaller destroyers it is armed with 10 turreted 50mm guns and 50 turreted 20mm guns spread across it to defend against rockets, aerial torpedoes, and fighters. If engaged at close range by a large enemy vessel it carries a single forward turreted 750mm auto-loading cannon mostly meant to scare off any who would engage it with surprising firepower.
The Navy has generally tried to compete with the Army for funding and resources and until recently generally lost out. The need for a long range combat navy to maintain trade lanes and build an empire has resulted in large and sudden growth for the navy with new airships and naval ships being laid down regularly. Their doctrine is still roughly setup and based mostly on foreign information rather than years of experience as the army is. Their readiness is high though as they are eager to prove themselves as valuable or more so than their land based counterparts.
- - Dread Guard: 100,000
The most elite soldiers of the Army are cherry picked from the academies and battlefields to be placed in the Dread Guard regiments. 20 hardened fighting regiments, 5 armored and 15 infantry they are armed and armored far above that of the standard line soldier.
- Readiness:
At peacetime readiness due to increasingly imperialistic tendencies the national standing military is ready to rapidly prepare for offensive operations or react in defensive operations against foreign invasions or rebels.
Territory:

- Velos: The capitol city of The Dominion of Courbonnais a large multi-million population center south of the Noir Mountains between the Marel and Durants Rivers. It's prosperity has largely grown ever since liberation from the ancient Alduan Empire. The old city still shows over half a dozen different architecural styles from the many years.
- Grey Fields: The the east of the Noir Mountains located in northern Courbonnais there stands a vast industrial complex stretching over kilometers. Defended by the Dread Guard itself and an entire fleet of aerial warships this is the center of Courbonnais industrial capability. Throughout the day trains and airships move workers into and out of the vast track of factories and workshops. Plans are constantly being drawn up to expand it ever outwards allowing it to produce ever more industrial and military goods.
- Port Vunabid: In the west of the country Port Vunabid is the largest military port situated at the head of the Marel River
- Port Bourdiex: Situated in the south at the head of the Durant River it is the largest trading port in the country.
History:The Dominion of Courbonnais can trace it's roots back for thousands of years to the city states of the Courbonnais region when they warred, traded, and generally interacted mostly amongst themselves caring little for the outside world. The expansive region with large amounts of good arable land, a significant population, and moderate resources stood independent aside from various alliances the city states struck between one another for centuries. This organized chaos lasted for quite some time until a new empire began to be forged on the peninsula to the east.
The twin cities of Avencass and Lavendass were the first to fall to the Alduan Empire the often seasonal armies of Courbonnais could not match the professional heavy infantry in the field and the superb engineers of Alduas constructed powerful siege weapons to batter down the gates of the walled Courbonnain cities. The natural infighting of the region only accelerated the conquest as no alliance could be forged until most of the region was within their grasp. By then they still could not halt the inexorable conquest. Seemingly daily cities fell either to diplomacy or warfare surrendering to the power and wealth that was the ever growing Alduan Empire. Over the course of nearly 50 years the entire region was conquered and pacified.
The pacification process never really took solid hold of the region though. The Emperor of Alduas forever had to keep his eyes on the region and his armies ready to march against any rebellions. The Emperor tried to incentivize turning on the more disloyal elements over the decades and centuries but neither the peasantry nor the nobility had interest in supporting the Empire. In time they went from trying to reward those who would aid them to punishing everyone. Taxes were larger, more and more men were levied to fill the armies, and every resource that could be was stripped from the region. This only further engendered displeasure with the Empire and made the people incite other regions to fight back where they could. Open rebellion was rare, it was always the minorest of cuts to bleed the empire a little.
Eventually the Empire decided a foreign enemy was necessary to tie together the various expanses of the empire. To the north into the great plains and steppes lived the horse lords, there had been minor forays against them but the superior cavalry had dissuaded any serious attempts at conquest thus far. With Velos and her sister cities bleeding the Empire more as the decades passed and encouraging other regions to fight back they were becoming a larger and larger issue as years passed and the empire grew fat and stagnant on it's past successes. A massive invasion was launched against the horse lords they pushed in all the way to the first river of the great plains defeating several hordes at great cost. There though things changed, the native Courbonnain auxiliaries wished to return home. The general of the army threatened to kill them all though and kept them advancing. At the river during a massive crossing the horse lords launched a counter attack, as the Alduan soldiers tried to rally the Courbonnain auxiliaries struck from behind trapping the Alduan forces in the river and on it's banks where the horse lords and Courbonnain men cut them apart.
It was here a minor alliance was struck and the seeding of the largest rebellion in the history of the Empire took place. Together the horse lords and the Courbonnain struck south cleansing the Alduan presence from the plains and Velos lead a union of cities in raising new armies and their flags in open revolt. When the Alduan forces began to lose ground every city and every region seemed to come together with the simple idea of crushing Alduas. With victory eventually assured Velos began to act to forge the future of the Dominion.
The then ruler of Velos declared himself first king of Velos, High King Barrabois married off his three sons to other major cities and secured alliances through diplomacy and struck out with their combined army to secure everything between the Marel and Durant rivers in effect giving him the core of Courbonnais. From there he began the expansion almost immediatly all of Courbonnais was under his thumb. Alduas had not even been razed yet when High King Barrabois invaded Molitan to the west. With much of Molitan's forces to the east fighting in the Alduan homeland it was largely a swift conquest though to this day there is still a region which holds out at the Millas river delta.
Barrabois was extremely opportunistic and emboldened by the immediate successes even if forces were bogged down to the east now and the offensive there stalled. All Courbonnais cities not directly controlled by Velos or tied by marriage were brought militarily under the power of Velos before the armies swept east and north. Three-fourths of Bardosia was conquered and occupied before Courbonnais struck north at the horse lords in a betrayal they have still not forgiven. Gains were made at first but then stalled. Alduas had been razed but a new empire now stood across much of the land it once held. This did allow the land to one day recover though and is now a part of the alliances that opposed the Dominion's further expanse.
For over a thousand years now the Dominion of Courbonnais has now stood though has never gained much land since the days of early conquests. As a result of this the Dominion has been forced to change with the times, always looking for that next edge over it's enemies. It's greatest being the horse lords to the north though to the south The Cadius Hegemony has blocked one of the greatest chances the Dominion had for expansion out into the sea causing an ever growing rivalry.
Over the centuries the Dominion has changed using it's military power to score victories were it could and using politics to utilize them. There are no more High Kings, the Emperor stands above all men with his many councils and advisers. In more recent years diplomacy and trade have become ever larger and important tools for them to use. This has lead to the rise of the merchant class growing ever more important in the nation. In recent years the growing industry has become a key to Dominion power which has made the merchants ever more powerful and lead to a swift rise of power for scientists and captains of industry. Embracing industry so directly shows the strength that the Dominion has always shown over the centuries in that it adapts quickly to the changing world and does what it can to cause the world to change in their favor.
