Theresa ot an Bol'hjar, Benedict Kaspin

"A dead city?"

"Yes."

"Not a live one? With shops and merchants?"

"Nope."

"Ben, are you serious?"

"Completely."

Theresa sighed. The duo were heading through the cave Ben seemed to be awfully excited about. She wasn't too keen on skipping over a normal, friendly settlement yet again, but she wasn't about to start arguing with her oversized companion over it.

The cave was well-lit, at least.

"Trust me, it'll be great. We're gonna find plenty of parts and gadgets while we look for that key. By the time we're done, I'll have enough to turn your crossbow into a steam-powered beast of a weapon." Ben said, seemingly holding in his eagerness.

"Easy there, big guy." Theresa said. "Let's just focus... on..."

They were approaching the mouth of the cavern. And the rock and dirt at their feet...

It started to change to dust.

"Yeah. This is a good sign."

They came upon the exit, and stepped outside. The sky was grey, just a dull blanket of clouds. They were standing on a small clearing on the side of a mountain. Everywhere, covering everything was dust. Dust that looked to have once been ash. There was a trail leading upwards, marked by lantern poles that had long gone out. The duo began their ascent upwards to their destination. The dust didn't make for solid footing, but they survived.

As they climbed, they saw buried in the dust, body after body. There was too much covering them to make out any unique details. But what could be made out were large, ruined machines. Weapon emplacements. Artillery.

"What in the world..."

They reached the top. Ahead of them were walls of stone, draped in dust, reaching stories high. And at the peak of the trail was an immense metal gate, halfway ajar. The walls and the gate both were covered in what looked like blast marks, and accompanying rubble.

Ben stepped toward the gate. Theresa looked apprehensive, but she followed alongside him. They slipped past the open gate, up a large set of stone stairs, with more dust-ridden bodies littered about.

They reached the top. And they stood. And beheld.

Towers. So, so tall. Bridges and walkways, all made of stone, all damaged in some way. Bodies strewn about, dressed in so many varying fashions, it was a chore to tell who was allied with who. And of course, dust. Dust settled over everything.

No sounds. No movement. No life.

"This is it."

The Taken

The abomination closest to the group was a monstrous, hulking figure. It was hidden under a cloak blacker than night itself, and violet eyes glowed from beneath the hood. It raised massive bony hands, and let out a deep growling noise that echoed through the forest. The Taken began to swarm the base. A swarm of indigo eyed Taken leaped, gliding through the air and slashing at the walls of the temple, trying to scratch through. Something glittered on the end of their long fingers. Burgundy eyed Taken rushed the broken wall of the base, attacking the Marked and trying to drag them down. One saw Cia and tried to swat her down, leaping onto her. A violet eyed Taken walked calmly into the ruins, its symbol covered face glowing in the torchlight. One of the Marked was swarmed by three Taken, who dragged him over to the Violet Eyed one. It ripped the bandanna off the man, revealing a glowing red mark. The man screamed, his skeletal jaw opening wide until it seemed it would break. The Violet Taken's hands shook as it reached towards the mark, which turned from red to violet slowly, and began spreading all over the Marked man's head. He screamed even more, and his bones creaked as the violet mark spread all over his body, until he fell tot eh ground. The rest of the Marked fought back, some killing the burgundy eyed Taken, and some fleeing back into the tunnels. The fallen man's marks faded to a coal black, and shortly after, he rose, his eyes glowing a burgundy color. He shuffled back towards the woods, where he would be cloaked.

Saaria Morgossa

Saaria hoisted Gerald back onto her back, and flew high into the air. The abominations were closing in, and the Taken seemed to be ignoring the dragoness for the moment. She flew around to the other side of the ruins, where a crawling abomination was quickly scuttling towards the ruin walls. She rocketed down, yelling at Gerald to hold on tight, before she collided with the beast, sending it flying. The cloak flew off, and the true abomination was revealed. It was a strange looking creature, made from bits of leftover bone. It had long tusks in its main head, and four other heads circling around its neck, which seemed to be laughing, although there was no sound coming from the creature.

It had at least five foot long fingers, which were tipped with a glowing claws, which looked deadly. The creature let out a hideous roar, and the four heads cackled. Saaria began to warm her fingers. This was going to be a long fight.

Cia

Cia looked in horror at all of the Taken. Sure she could do something about it in her weapon form, but she had no idea how to unleash it. There was also the worry of hurting others. Cia was then attacked by one of the taken as it jumped on her bringing her down to the ground. She was in full human size again so hitting her would be easy. She tried to get up but the taken only smashed her head into the ground again as she tried. Cia was starting to get frustrated now. "I'm tired of this constant." The ground next to her started to shake. "GETTING ATTACKED BY THINGS!" Cia yelled, yellow spikes of sugar came up from the ground stabbing the Taken in it's ribs, it didn't break anything though it did get the Taken away from her so she could get up.

Once she was standing again she grabbed one of the yellow sugar spikes. It changed shape into that of a maul. She ran at a few taken and smashed one into the other with her new yellow sugar maul. Cia was a little pissed now, and just wanted a break from fighting. "I'LL SMASH YOU ALL TO BITS!" Cia screamed out in frustration as she made her way through a crowd of Taken smashing them left and right. The Cupcake Princess was pissed.

JoyVille

The people of Joyville continued to attack, for each one taken down two more took it's place. "YOU INTERRUPT OUR RITUAL! HAVE YOU NO SHAME?!" One of them yelled as it went after Jordan. The songstress looked like she was getting madder. She opened her mouth, a few short notes came from it. Those who had been slain rose again, their eyes glowing purple as they went after Jordan and Sven with more ferocity.

Sven

Sven meanwhile was continuing to keep the Town's people off of him. "Go after the Songstress! She's the source of their power!" Sven yelled towards Jordan. Sven swung his axe into the ground, candy canes sprung from the ground to try and clear a path for Jordan to go after the Songstress.

Realizing it was pointless to try to cut his way to her he opted to take the new path that was open to him. Has he ran Blake and Jasmine joined him for a mad dash at the goddess. Any villager in their way was dodged around or cut down as they neared the Songstress and her bodyguard.

Captain Aldrich

"Sorry Cap'n!" Shouted a voice from the ironclad ship lingering just off the shallows of the Continent. "The lads all agree! This is where we leave you! We just can't abide a trip to this place, we've got families! Children!" Derisive laughter boomed from the deck as Aldrich's first mate, Berhtr, took the helm and waved with a smile on his face. Aldrich sneered as he pulled his coat back into order, sopping wet over his shoulders. The dirtied Imperial medallions shone on the lapel in the light of the torch. Berhtr walked to the edge of the deck and leaned over, "You know how I am with my 'family'!" From his hip, he pulled a long, slender blade that shone with white and gold in the low light of the ship's fires.

Aldrich grit his teeth and ran a hand over the smooth of his head. "At least arm me, you coward! If you challenged me like a man, we'd be swabbing the red off the deck by now!" The crew laughed again, Berhtr nodding along with the challenge from his former captain. "Aye, you would, Cap'n. You've got a foot on me, and you're schooled with this here scrapper." He raised the sheathed rapier and leaned over the railing to throw it in the shallows, "But you're not in the Guard anymore! These ain't Imperial waters! Honor got washed off the keel the minute we left for this godforsaken place."

Aldrich picked his blade from the water, and felt the sea spray his face as a flintlock pistol and a heavy bottle buried themselves in the shallows as well. He picked them up and holstered the weapons, toting the bottle with his free hand. "I've even left you a bottle of the Dagger's brew for good will!" The crew exploded into laughter again as they pulled anchor and began to slowly drift away.

And now here he was, he thought as he turned back to the shore of the Continent. Drenched to the bone, covered in salt and sand and in possession of some VERY strong moonshine. He gave a frustrated bellow as he moved toward the treeline, unconcerned with the island itself as he uncorked the Dagger brew and took a healthy swig. It burned as it went down, but he could take it.

He was one of the Empire's finest after all. Well, once.

Theresa ot an Bol'hjar, Benedict Kaspin

The cobblestone beneath the duo's feet was barely visible with all the dust, bodies, and rubble scattered about. Nowhere in sight looked to be free of anything indicating the carnage that took place here.

"All these bodies..." Theresa began to say as she walked, "I can barely tell who was allied with who. There's people in peasant garb, church robes, metal coats, flesh coats..."

"And then there's the nonhuman bodies."

Quite a few were around as well. Bodies of monstrous beings, some relatively intact, others so torn apart by explosions and riddled with bullet holes that it was impossible to tell what they used to be.

"This was one hell of a battle." Theresa commented, lowly.

The street ahead of them was blocked by rubble, so they elected to cut through an alley to the right. They passed under a stained, broken window, both wondering just how all of this happened.

"I forgot to mention it earlier, but..." Theresa began, "I'm pretty sure we're both seeing the same scene now, right? No split in perception?"

"None. Far as I can tell." Ben replied. Something was wrong with his tone. He lost the chipper attitude he had when they were coming here.

They exited the alleyway and entered an open section of the city. All around them was more of what they'd already seen so far. Right before them was a large building that had been crushed under the fallen corpse of a gigantic, six-legged creature. Under its blanket of dust were what looked like sections of meat and bone, damaged from artillery fire. Its head was split open, charred and mangled.

"This..." Theresa exclaimed, "How did they manage to kill this?"

"Artillery. Lots of artillery. Not a lot of things can stand up to that."

Theresa turned her head, observing the open district square. "Something's alive out there." She said, with a bit of worry. Ahead, stumbling amidst the wreckage, was a slender figure wearing a hooded cloak of withered flesh, draped in dust, walking on two metal legs with strips of flesh interwoven between them. The face under the hood was nothing but a flickering light.

It seemed like it was... lost.

"Think it's hostile?"

"Could be. If not... could tell us something about the place. Maybe point us to the old district."

Theresa nodded, and the two approached the figure.

Coastal Vigil

The appearance of a ship at The Continent's shore had drawn the attention of more than a few of the Vigils. They stood atop a rocky outcrop further downwind of the Salt Dagger's temporary moorings, watching silently and waiting. Waiting for a departure.

As one of the more extravagantly-dressed occupants was thrown from the ship, and it began to sail away, the congregation dispersed with the knowledge that only one had disembarked onto the sands. And with that one, stayed one of the Vigils.

From its twisted shell, it stared on as the pirate threw on his gear and began a sullen march inland, toward the forested areas. A mollusk scuttled from cavity to cavity on the shell and with a shake of its blue, stretched limbs, the Vigil raised a hand to the bottom of its shell. The other went to the large opening atop its shell-head.

It straightened up, raised its head and...

Captain Aldrich

A horn sounded in the distance as his ship sailed away without him. The Ex-Captain sucked the dregs of moonshine from his lip and corked the bottle again, rumbling deep in his throat as he felt the burn of the liquor as it went down once more. Doing his best to ignore the noise and sounds of merriment from the now-distant ship, and that peculiar horn. The bottle in his hand was still heavy, long enough to nearly touch the ground from his dangling grip, and the brew was strong. He would need to preserve it until he found a running water source. This wasn't his first marooning, which helped his nerves. His first mutiny, sure. Always a first time for everything, as his mentor always yammered at him. Right before he slapped a sword in his hand and told him to dance the Daisy Darling.

Imperial customs, in hindsight, were worrying.

Thankfully the undergrowth and vegetation past the treeline wasn't the most difficult of terrain. He'd seen worse untraveled wilds but this place seemed to have had some traffic, and rather recently. He wasn't the best of trackers, but broken branches and shifted grass didn't take a pack of hounds to understand. Boots sloshing and breeches beginning to chafe, he trudged slowly through nature and stopped routinely to be unimpressed at his current state of affairs. He would have started to feel sorry for himself had he been a man for lamentation.

And had a growl not erupted from a bushel behind him.

His mind had not fully registered a threat as his hand flicked for his blade quicker than a rat through a pantry. The draw was silent, and silver flashed in the light of the moon as Aldrich struggled to pierce the dark and see what had made the noise. He should have brought the torch from the shore. Rather, he SHOULD have gutted Berhtr the moment he started giving him sideways looks in the galley, then he'd never be in the ass-end of nowhere with his blade drawn to face a...

Fox.

Aldrich lowered his blade with a huff, kicking a boot out at the mange-ridden mutt. "Shoo, little blighter." It recoiled, but didn't retreat. Merely staring him down as he sheathed his blade and stared back in kind. He was in unfamiliar territory. He inquired to the fox, furiously fiddling with the buckle of his belt. "Tread on your turf, have I? Well, we can't have that."

It was a few moments before he was marking territory of his own, right there in front of the creature. His anger sometimes got the better of him, his mentor always told him. Right now he was more concerned with the look of fear he was garnering from the beastie in the bushel. "What, mutt? Scared of what you can't scare off?" He said with a growing chuckle before the fox's retreat made him tilt his head. The feeling of sea-spray on the nape of his neck calmed him for a moment, before he realized where he was. And felt an unfamiliar chill on his rear.

The Vigil had arrived.

In a gesture that seemed more at home in a drinkhouse or rum den, the Vigil reared back and gave Aldrich a quick lash with its quivering tentacle. The cold sting was slightly familiar, but unwelcome, and in the next instant a flash of silver had severed the writhing limb. Aldrich wheeled around, one hand grabbing for his falling breeches with bottle in hand as the other took up an offensive stance with his blade. The Vigil swayed for a moment, before turning tail and barrelling away. The Captain dropped his blade and fumbled for his pistol as he redid his belt, dropping it too as he secured his pants. With a quick dip, he picked it up again before squeezing the trigger with the shell-headed creature in his sights. A click, a fizzle and then nothing as the Vigil bounded over a rock and disappeared.

Aldrich looked to his pistol with a grimace, and rubbed at his right arsecheek. The skin crawled as he hissed in pain and annoyance. The powder was wet and now his behind was both soaked and slimy.

"The lads would die if they saw me now." He grumbled.

Gerald Pithers

What a night this was.

One happening after another. And Gerald was so valiantly calm and dismissive of all the present dangers. The Taken? All they were to him were more jungle beasts. Savage ruffians. Unfavorable creatures of the night, bone-whacked ne'er-do-wells...

"... BELLIGERENT CALCIUM FIENDS, DRAMATIZED OPERA WASTRELS, MEAT-STAHVED VAGABONDS..." Gerald went on and on, coming up with weaker and weaker names for the Taken as Cia and Saaria just went to town on them.

Kind of made him feel a bit bad, being so useless in this situation. He was still hoisted over Saaria's back, able to do naught but provide commentary as she combatted her adversaries. And what a poor seat to have at the show, being turned away from all the action. Was absolutely terrible, all of it. Made Gerald miss the theater groups back in Chapel Valley, before the many churches halted their performances indefinitely. Oh, what he wouldn't give to see those fantastic shows again. That one group, the Westwood Stage League? So many tales involving graveyards and the wonders of the afterlife. Gerald would have been perfect for one of those, given his current physical state of being. Alas, the poor folks were branded necromantic sympathizers and hung at the Weepers' Drop.

Chapel Valley.

How long had it been?

How long had he been asleep?

He thought about it all as flaming bits of Taken flew past him. What'd really happened, and how much of an impact it should have had on him. What he missed upon his demise and would never see again. Lively streets, fond friends, tall drinks...

"AH..." He said, completely lost from the battle at hand.

The Cave-Inn

After theyโ€™d gotten themselves settled in, washed, and put in some proper clothes, Team Thunderstorm found themselves sitting on comfortable wooden beds within one of the innโ€™s rooms. It was far from time to sleep, but it felt incredibly nice to be sitting on a proper bed.

โ€œSo,โ€ Chumi said. It was obvious, what he was going to ask.

โ€œWhat happened?โ€

โ€œYou saw me run back to the waterfall pool, so Iโ€™ll omit the part before that. Sorry about abandoning you there, by the way,โ€ she said. Chumi nodded.

โ€œItโ€™s fine. You looked scared out of your mind, anyway. Besides, if you had escaped with me, weโ€™d both be cursed and probably neither of us would be here now,โ€ he said. Good. Sheโ€™d been feeling kinda guilty about that.

โ€œOkay, well, anyway, after I escaped into the pool, I sank deeper and deeper until it was so dark I fell asleep without noticing,โ€ Piper continued, โ€œWhen I woke up, I was in some sort of stone pipe, beneath the ground. When I tried to escape, something weird happened, my magic went haywire, and the pope exploded. I got shot into the forest on a giant geyser as a result,โ€

โ€œThen what?โ€ Chumi asked.

โ€œI woke up in the cave I had you go to bed in. Theresa and the lizard rescued me from the water or something, so we get introduced and everything,โ€ Piper said, โ€œAfter that, I went outside and used a roll-call orb, and you know what happened from there,โ€ she finished.

She laid back onto the bed. All in all, while the exploration certainly hadnโ€™t gone as planned so far, they were still in reasonably good shape. Sure, one of the members was now subject to an ancient curse of some variety which would โ€œpreventโ€ Chumi from spilling the beans on what was within the Blanklands, which, as ancient curses usually go, probably meant fiery death, but they still had one half the team able to report findings back. There was that going for them. They also still had most of their supplies, a good deal more raw orbs than theyโ€™d left with, and some key information about how the place worked. Speaking of keys...

โ€œHey, Chumi,โ€ she said, sitting back up and putting her hand in her hat, removing the keys that Julian had given her earlier, โ€œCould you take a look at these?โ€

Chumi accepted the keys, looking them over, turning them, tapping them with a silly looking little device that hadnโ€™t been there moments ago. After a minute or so, he spoke.

โ€œItโ€™s a key,โ€ He said. Piper glared at him. โ€œItโ€™s a magical key of some sort. Itโ€™s got a... really weird enchantment on it, which uses a bunch of eldritch variables that arenโ€™t present anywhere else on the runes. Itโ€™s like someone deliberately put half an enchantment on this. So far as I can tell, though, itโ€™ll react to something that gives it all these variables, then tell that something to do something. With more nonsense variables. Beyond that, I canโ€™t tell,โ€

โ€œSo itโ€™s... A key. To a magical door,โ€ Piper said, flatly.

โ€œLooks like it. A door or something else entirely. Hell, it could be a key to a magical doomsday device, and I wouldnโ€™t be able to tell,โ€ Chumi said.

โ€œIโ€™ll make sure to ask Julian what exactly it does if I get the chance,โ€ Piper said. Hopefully it was, in fact, a perfectly normal key to a perfectly normal door. Just, well, magical. Speaking of magic, she should probably go over her idea to break the curse the continent is on with Chumi.

โ€œSo, um, Chumi,โ€ she started, staring at the stone ceiling, โ€œWhat do you think we should do about the whole curse thing?โ€

โ€œI really donโ€™t think we should let you get cursed willingly,โ€ he said instantly. Piper turned her head in surprise. She hadnโ€™t expected him to be that decisive about it.

โ€œWhy?โ€ Piper asked. She obviously had no intention of going along with it herself, but if he answered that quickly, sheโ€™d best listen to it.

โ€œCurses are bad, for one, no matter how well-intentioned. Secondly, though, the way you reacted to the Vigils was, well, terrifying,โ€ he said, โ€œI donโ€™t think Iโ€™ve ever seen you that scared before. There were only two there, and from what I understand, thereโ€™s going to be a lot more if we go to the boss. We can fight one big monster, but I canโ€™t fight you, not when youโ€™re terrified out of your mind and attacking everything in sight with icicle steam spears,โ€

Well. She hadnโ€™t thought of that one, somehow. She really should have been expecting it, but somehow the idea that the vigils would be as scary as the vigils were had completely dropped from her mind.

She laid back onto the bed, spreading herself over as much of it as she could, staring at the ceiling. There really werenโ€™t any other options here, were there? Despite what Julian had said, the only thing they could do was to flee, and eventually face this Fishmonster. Either defeat it, or be cursed. If they managed to beat it, what then? Would they just send more? She didnโ€™t know how far the Vigilsโ€™ senses of duty and self-preservation would go when it came to them losing their own lives.

She doubted they would listen to her when she said she did genuinely plan to break this curse that threatened their very being. After all, people tended to be fearful of things that could disrupt their ways of life, and she doubted squid monster men were any different. Would they accept the word of someone claiming to want to save them, or just curse them for the possibility of ruining everything? She had to go over this with Chumi. Perhaps he had some insight.

โ€œChumi, t-thank you for thinking of that. I didnโ€™t even consider how terrifying that would be. I, um, wasnโ€™t actually thinking of doing that anyway, but for a different reason,โ€ she said, stuttering slightly.

โ€œI gave it some thinking after what Julian said, and I decided that the only way that I can make everything work out is to, um, completely abolish the curse that will kill the inhabitants of the continent if they become known,โ€

Chumi stared at her. Piper felt a little bit shameful for a moment. It really did sound ridiculous, coming out of her mouth.

โ€œI canโ€™t argue with you there. We canโ€™t make history by discovering stuff, only for it to be gone when others go to see it,โ€ he said, โ€œThereโ€™s also the ethical effects of it all, I guess. I wouldnโ€™t want Julian to disappear, I like him,โ€

โ€œMe too,โ€

โ€œHow do you think we should start?โ€ he said. Piper looked at him. He had a massive grin on his face.

โ€œI feel like the best way to do that is to find someone who knows. The Vigils probably have a key to the puzzle, but we need to know what the puzzle is supposed to look like first,โ€ she said.

โ€œLetโ€™s ask Julian if thereโ€™s someone who knows even more about the continentโ€™s formation and curse than he does, when weโ€™re ready to leave,โ€ Chumi said. Piper nodded vigorously.

Yaxato Woodlands

Enrique most certainly wasnโ€™t lost. The path thinned here, but it was still certainly visible. It certainly hadnโ€™t gotten muddled with what looked like a rhinoceros charging through several miles back. He certainly wasnโ€™t going to starve if he couldnโ€™t find his way to Rockvale.

Suddenly, a manโ€™s voice erupted from the thick forest to his left. A little red fox shot past him, looking terrified. Was that another man, lost and hunting for food? Company would be excellent, especially if they had food to spare. It wasnโ€™t as though Enrique had any with him.

Searching in the general direction of the noise revealed a tall, bald man who looked to be scratching his buttocks with the butt of a pistol. While he would normally find himself laughing at such a sight, the fact that he was wiping his own arse with a firearm made Enrique a little wary at the idea of insulting him. Perhaps, then, he would instead play the role of a kindly travelling man. Two of those things were true, at least. He took a breath, and revealed himself.

The man didnโ€™t actually notice him at that, as he was too busy inspecting his own behind. With a pistol. Enrique took it upon himself to begin the introductions.

โ€œHello, hello,โ€ he spoke, โ€œWhat might a fine man such as yourself be doing so deep within the Yaxato Woods?โ€

He hoped the formality wouldnโ€™t be necessary, but you never could tell just what level of courtesy a random person would demand. He was well dressed, though sopping wet and possibly quite as lost as Enrique was.

Captain Aldrich

@Empour
The Captain's behind tingled in a way that made him angry. An itch bit at him that not even the handle of his trusty shooter could scratch. He growled as he picked up the bottle once more and raised it to his mouth to remove the cork with his teeth. Twice-damned sea monsters and their thrice-damned wriggling boneless limbs. He'd rather face sirens and sea serpents again before touching another tentacled terror.

He stopped an inch short of biting down on the cork, hearing another voice in the forest nearby. Another beastie? His body didn't take chances, and moved quick to turn and point the pistol again. This time the barrel came to a rest on an elderly man, grey in the beard but spry in the step. He looked almost as fit as Aldrich himself. He was definitely shorter, as Aldrich angled the pistol towards the old man's gut. He was just waiting for a tentacle or two to come spilling from the man's chattering maw.

"Ya-what Woods?" He questioned as he stepped closer with an angry grimace on his face. The bottle fell as he went to pick up his blade and sheathe it once more. "I've been booted onto this lovely little rock by my former compatriots." The pistol's powder was wet, but the old man didn't seem to be a threat. Aldrich was wet, cold and bruised. He was in no shape to be starting wars with what could be friendly natives. He glared for a moment, before lowering the pistol and picking up his bottle once more.

"Have you any water, or food?" He said with a growl, toting the heavy bottle, "If I keep drinking this I'll be leaving bits of my stomach all over the woods."

He rubbed at the trigger-guard, biting at his lip softly. The pistol was harmless, but the old man needn't know that. "What about a camp?" He asked cautiously.

Theresa ot an Bol'hjar, Benedict Kaspin

The robed figure was mumbling to itself.

"Retreating... I'll get- Horris is dead... Supply..."

There was something rather mechanical about its voice. The duo approached it cautiously. Theresa kept her hand on the grip of her sword. She stepped toward the figure ahead of Ben and called out, "Excuse me?"

"Hands... not coming... west dis- blocked... where... supply..."

"Excuse me!"

"Baldwin is go- back... workshop..."

"We're not getting anything out of him." Ben said, eyeing the figure with curiosity. "He's lost his mind."

"I just want to know what it is." Theresa replied, "Definitely not human. Not now, at least. But it's wearing the same flesh robe as some of the bodies around here."

"The Keeper mentioned something about the masters of this place. Engineers. Maybe this is one of them. Or... what's left of him."

They both watched as the Engineer stumbled away, still muttering to itself. "Clinic... Kan- use those... no... underground..." It said, moving further away.

"The old district is supposed to be on the other side of town. Guess we'll just have to climb over the rubble if he can't tell us the quickest route."

"It said something about the underground? Maybe the place has tunnels we can use."

"Keeper told me that's a bad idea. Stuff down there we shouldn't mess with. And judging by what we've seen so far, I trust him on the notion."

"Fine. Let's head up that way."

Theresa pointed towards the only open street not blocked by rubble or the body of some kind of horrendous being, and the two were on their way.

Cave-Inn

After about an hour of packing, organizing, taking inventory, and eating, Team Thunderstorm was ready to go. They were both missing bedclothes, but that was okay. Piper could sleep in her clothes, or just a pile of blankets without if need be. At least, until they found a tailor.

Now, though, it was time to leave. Theyโ€™d impeded on Julianโ€™s hospitality for long enough, and they had important questions to ask him.

โ€œTime to go,โ€ Chumi said. Piper nodded, and got off of the bed. She was loathe to leave something so comfortable, but they couldnโ€™t stay here forever.

The team was soon outside once more. The sun was still high in the sky, and Julian could be found sitting on that rock, meditating. They walked down to greet him.

โ€œUm, Julian, we had a couple of questions, if you donโ€™t mind my asking,โ€ Piper said. Julian nodded, allowing for her to continue.

โ€œFirst off, I was looking for some more detail on what these keys do,โ€ Chumi said, holding his out.

โ€œSecondly, I was wondering if there was anyone on the continent that knows more about the curse the natives are under,โ€ Piper said, before he could reply.

Yaxato Woodlands

โ€œNo food on me, Iโ€™m afraid,โ€ Enrique said, removing a jug from his pack and offering it to the man. Would be a good idea to gain his trust. He didnโ€™t want this obviously hardened warrior turning on him.
โ€œIโ€™ve only got some water, and a map I could use to guide us to some. Iโ€™ve been out of food myself since yesterday,โ€

โ€œNo camp, either. I was on a path towards a town, didnโ€™t think Iโ€™d need it. Iโ€™ve since then lost the path, but if I had a compass, I could use my map here,โ€ he said, removing a rolled up paper from his backpack, โ€œWould you happen to have one? Rockvaleโ€™s nearby, if youโ€™ve ever heard of it,โ€

Keeper Julian

"Well..." Julian began, readjusting his position atop the rock.

"Those keys are... how do I say this... like needles. The Junction is a lumpy knot, and all these tunnels and doorways are... strings, I suppose. The needles help you find your way through the knot, to and from the Junction to other parts of the land."

They both looked somewhat confused at the sewing analogy he was attempting to make.

"Perhaps a better way to say this would be... the keys are like, beacons. The Junction senses these beacons, and whoever is carrying them, and grants them full access to its pathways. A dead end cave becomes a tunnel leading here, or a closet door in an abandoned house... so on. And the Junction does these things on its own bodiless whim. Sometimes it transports people without keys, it's... random. Been like that for as long as I've been here."

They seemed slightly more pleased with that answer.

"And as for your second question..." He began again, "I don't know the origin of the curse. Vorris might, but... we don't say much to each other anymore. You're not the first to ask, many an intellectual has attempted to uncover its mysteries. Break it, even. But the lot of them eventually gave up, or... perished, searching."

He sighed.

"Some part of me thinks it's not so much a curse as it is a... a net. A net that... catches these lost pieces of the world, and keeps them from falling into nothingness. And I don't know who or what could have made that net... but I wouldn't question their actions if I were to stand before them. I wouldn't wish the net to be torn."

He gave Piper a bit of a concerned look, shrugging.

"How could anyone?"

Extradimensional Junction

Drat.

Not only was the only way Julian could refer them any more knowledgeable sources on the curse a death trap, but it sounded like she was fundamentally wrong about just how it worked in the first case.

If she was to find more information on the subject, sheโ€™d have to find it the hard way, through ancient books, letters, and tablets. Not a fun prospect.
The curse, as Julian had mentioned, looked to have the fundamental evil of the vanishing of people built into it. Perhaps that was the necessary evil? Curses, while powerful, always required some proportional element of evil, loss, or pain to them. This was why many โ€œritualsโ€ require animal or human sacrifice- they were but curses by another name.

If that was the case, then undoing the bad part of the Blanklandโ€™s spell would undo the whole thing, to cut the net, if you were to go along with Julianโ€™s analogy. A change, then, would instead have to be made to the curse itself. A replacement of the necessary evil, to change the bad from one to another.

She couldnโ€™t think of any catalytic evil so strong as the saving of someone, but only so long as they remained incognito to others. It was a masterful creation. The loss so closely matched the gain that it would be one of the most stable curses in the world- Perhaps even the most of all.

Still, though, it was unacceptable. Ancient curses were not made to impede the progress of those that came after- Or, well, maybe they were, but perhaps not in this case. As Julian had said, speaking with the big boss of the Vigils, an embodiment and protector of the Blanklandโ€™s integrity would be the best option, were it not for the crippling fear that came with the monsters and the inevitability of being cursed themselves. Knowledge, no matter how important, was almost never worth being cursed for obtaining. That was the route of the mad wizard, the wicked witch, the warped thaumaturge, the shade.

There was the possibility that Julian knew more than he was letting on. He obviously knew quite a bit, and the kindness he shared could be but a facade hiding an ugly protector like the Vigils. Perhaps he was worried that Piper and Chumi would destroy what he held dear in their quest. It was, after all, a possibility. Curses could be warped or even destroyed just by looking at them wrong, after all. While curses were not a purely perceptional magic, all magic was, at its root, deeply affected by the personโ€™s sight, thoughts, and feelings.

Curses. This was all getting horribly complex. She would have to somehow find a curse, understand it without destroying it, find an evil fitting enough to replace the vanishing with, and meticulously replace it.

For now, she decided to focus on the finding of the curse. The Blanklands were roughly ovular, which could imply a central source of power. In the event that a library of lost knowledge was nonexistent, they would start there.

โ€œIs there a library, a repository, anywhere that ancient knowledge is stored, somewhere on the continent?โ€ She asked, โ€œYou had said this place links to many places, are any of them like that?โ€

Suddenly, a thought entered her mind. Julian might not be supportive of giving her that information if he believed that she would use it for destroying the curse, which technically she didnโ€™t want to do. Perhaps a more personal, sympathetic reason should be given.

Quietly, she added, โ€œI want to know as much as I can about this curse. I donโ€™t want to be unmade too,โ€

The Battle of Abominations, Part I

The drawing abomination leaped at Saaria, screeching as it did. She swooped out of its reach, and threw a fireball at its back. It did not react, and turned its gruesome grinning face towards her. She had never faced such a thing. She hadn't even heard stories of such a thing. It pounced again, performing a strange backflip and Saaria narrowly escaped, one of her shoulders catching the edge of one of its fingers. And it was sharp . She reached into the hive mind, hoping to gain knowledge on the thing. She found nothing but a headache.
"Fuck!" She screamed as the creature pounced yet again. It was like a hunting animal. The thought that perhaps it had once been human made Saaria queasy. The world seemed to slow as it made yet another leap at her. She closed her eyes, feeling the hive mind around and within her. Somewhere on the other side of the ruins, a swarm of Taken were now advancing on Cia, and the hulking abomination was closing in ever so slowly. She could see it all. Feel it all. She fell down a bit, and reached her hand out, feeing it connect where she knew it would, without opening her eyes. She grasped onto the collarbone and spun the beast into the air, throwing it as hard as she could into the earth. Opening her eyes, a violet ring appeared spinning round her pupil. The creature stared at her as she sent a fireball rocket down into its head, smashing it into a million fragments. She slowly descended to the ground, noting that most of the bones disintegrated when the beast was defeated, but a few bones lay askew in a pile. Gerald's arms and hands were found. Saaria breathed deeply, trying to sever herself from the hive mind.
"Shit." She mumbled as she felt it resisting her. She had to stop trying to do that, it couldn't be good for her. She thought she was severed, but the violet ring remained around her pupil, laying dormant for now.

Captain Aldrich

@Empour
Aldrich's stomach snarled at him, the mention of food sending his hunger straight to the forefront of his mind once more. Enrique had offered water, but no food. The Captain dropped the grog, snatched at the water and set to washing the taste of alcohol and seasalt from his mouth. A few moments he handed back the bottle, half-emptied.

"A town, hey? Even better. I could do with the warmth of a commonroom. The security of stone walls." The Captain said, scratching at his face. The Imperial symbols and medals upon his coat glistened as he rifled through his pockets for his trusty compass.

"Any sailor worth his salt carries his rose at all times. Spin yourself silly... friend." Aldrich said with a smile as he threw the compass Enrique's way. The grog found its way to his hand, pistol still held firm in the other.

"Here's hoping Rockvale doesn't live up to the name too proudly."

Keeper Julian

Julian turned his head and pointed to an ornate, well-kept wooden door. "Through there." He said, "Though I don't believe it will be of much help to you."

He turned back to Piper and said, "After all the years I've been here, no one's ever bothered writing a book on the Continent's Curse. Certainly not before they ended up here, at that. Just not possible." He upped himself off the rock and began walking towards the path to the cave-inn, turning back towards the duo as he did.

"Whatever you two end up doing... it's not my charge to interfere. But as I warned you before Piper, the Vigils will not stop pursuing you until their mark's on your skin. You should go prepared."

He turned and began walking away once more, passing a quick glance at the tunnel leading to the Vigils' Wharf.

Expecting something to stumble out of it, almost.

Guess who's back?
Hint:

(Definitely not this.)

It had been watching from afar, waiting for a chance. Victims were always at their most vulnerable when already busy with an opponent. Now it was time to try, try again.

As Saaria landed after finishing off her opponent, the Magna Pater chucked a fat hunk of sandstone at the back of her head from two dozen meters away with enough strength to send her into a front flip if it hit. Crude and tactless, but sound in its simplicity. It probably wouldn't kill a dragon, but then again the monster wanted her alive. Meat tasted better when it could still squirm in pain.

Cia, Sweetmeat County Weapon

Cia continued her fight, though she was struggling now. That was until she could hear low moan. This was not a good sign for anyone who was her ally. Cia continued to strike down Taken, though she had to retreat after awhile as her face was started to change. Her skin got darker as she ran from the taken. Soon enough she had to stop and create a shield around herself as she completed her transformation. Soon enough she came out of it, no eyes, a nose, and the mouth was huge, almost taking up her entire head. She let out a screech as she burst out of the shield smashing multiple Taken with her now black candy maul. She was a powerful foe indeed.

The big burly man jumped out to protect Mai from any damage. He blocked whatever attack came at him and then got ready for a fight. The other townspeople were busy with Sven in the meantime as he was fighting them off. Though a few of them closed in on Jordan. (Write a battle scene, you have control Trevor)

Theresa ot an Bol'hjar, Benedict Kaspin

A good number of the bodies littered around the city streets were gigantic, human-shaped amalgamations of flesh and metal. Their designs were so alike to each other that it seemed they were manufactured.

"Ben, you know machines." Theresa said, looking at one of the dead flesh golems as the duo passed by. "You ever seen anything like these before?"

"Never." He said, "This is some strange combination of metalwork and... I honestly don't even know what to call the other half. Some kind of organic coating. Never heard of machines and flesh working together like that."

"It looks... complicated, to me." Theresa replied, "More so than normal machines, even."

"It's nasty is what it is."

As they walked, Ben's eyes shifted towards a somewhat larger building to the left. Above the sizable door frame was a sign that read 'WORKSHOP 49'.

"This looks interesting." Ben said, approaching the workshop. It surprised him that the door was large enough to let him inside - perhaps it'd been meant for the flesh golems. Theresa followed him inside. The interior was unlit, but they could see enough. A grand, spacious room with tables and bins stocked with scrap metal, spare parts, strange tools, and jars full of various organic materials. A large, circular platform sat in the center, with a lever nearby - an elevator, looked to be. The building was not free of damage, with bodies and bullet holes abound, but it was free of rubble, thankfully.

Ben approached one of the bins. This place was practically a goldmine for someone of his profession. He sifted his hands through the metal bins, picking out pieces and examining them. "There's so much here!" He said, "Scrap and assembled pieces... half this stuff is familiar but, other half I'm not sure of..."

"And this?" Theresa said, holding up a jar full of little, wrinkled strips of flesh, pulsating softly.

"Yeah, let's... let's leave that kind of stuff alone." He continued sorting through the bins. "Gotta get a bigger bag or something... Hey Theresa, can you-"

A loud thump came from a door in the back of the workshop, behind a desk.

"Oฬ•PฬดEฬตN, ฬจDAMN ITฬธ.ฬธ"

A scratchy, mechanical, angry voice accompanied the beating down of the door. The duo turned their heads to see it. It swung open, and in barged another figure in a flesh robe, like the one before, in the streets. Only it seemed much more hostile. The light coming from under its hood was a flickering yellow.

"Iอ อ˜HEARฬตD SอŸOMอžETHINฬจG..ฬง." It said, before turning its vision towards Theresa.

"ลžฬตTอา‰AอœRออ Tฬจอ อ˜Pอ˜อ RอขออžAฬขYฬดฬจฬ›รออœNGฬก.อขอœ"

Its light turned stark red, and it lunged.
