@Archimedes Sure, right, I'm totally holding back information for curiosity's sake! I'm totally not still writing this or debating what these things actually are or running in circles with the plot! Nope! :3

Kickoff shall beeee ...... as soon as I'm confident enough in what's actually happening to set it down in stone.

In the meantime, I just added the queen to the NPCs. :)

Here we are.....lemme know what you lads think.

NAME: Liam Carter

APPEARANCE: Liam stands at six feet tall with well toned muscles. He has sharp features and looks a little rugged, with black hair and dark brown eyes. he also has many tiny scars littering his body from fights and his fathers abuse. He usually wears an old white shirt with a black vest and tie when not working whilst on duty he just wears simple khaki pants and a singlet.

ABSTRACT: The Happy Nobody.

DETAIL: Liam was born to a loving mother and a not so loving father in the slums. Carter learned the beauty of everything and everyone from his mother. He learned that even the most evil of people have some good in them, even if everyone does not see it and that beauty too lived in everyone and everything. But the most important thing he learned from his mother was curiosity and happiness. Liam could never understand how no matter what his father did to her or him, she would always smile and laugh. He learned what the saying “live life to the fullest” truly meant when he was with his mother. She was always looking for something new to learn or discover whilst keeping the biggest smile Liam has seen to this day.

From his father however, He learned just how vile a human can be and how low one can stoop. His father always thought of Liam as a mistake for a reason still unknown to him. Every night his father would come home, only to beat him and even his mother if she tried to protect him. Liam learned how to absorb pain from his father and how everything that is handheld is weapon in a fight. He learned that in a fight anything goes and that when you fight, you fight to kill. As the years went on many things happened to Liam that made him stronger, harder, and at times even ruthless.

Finally at the age of fifteen he went to work as a blacksmiths apprentice due to an extreme shortage of money. For five years this blacksmith looked after Liam, showing him the ways of the forge and even giving him his old equipment and teaching him how to use them properly. As much as Carter loved working the forge, he knew his heart lay in some other field of work. Writing. The curiosity and imagination of his mother rubbed off on Liam as he realized that he wanted to work towards writing a fictional book set in a world of his creation. So everyday he wrote, thinking of some new race or species or kingdom that would fit in his world.

At the age of twenty however things took a turn for the worst when it was found out that his father had gotten into a rather massive amount of debt and Liam was going to have to pay it off by working on the wall. So that is where Liam has been for three years, Working both on the wall and in his masters forge when he has the time. And no matter how many things go wrong Liam remembers the promise he made to himself and to his mother….that no matter how bad things get, he must always smile and focus on the good in this world rather than the bad.

MAGICAL INVENTORY: N/A

INVENTORY:
Brown Military Greatcoat
Pepperbox Rifle
Heavy Calvary Sabre
Notebook of…..well Notes about his fictional world.

NAME: Maria Loronha (note: the "nh" bit is pronounced like "ny.")

ABSTRACT: Sweethearted aristocrat-to-be (unless she has anything to say about it).

DETAIL: Maria was born to a pair of middle-class citizens who run a candy shop on the banks of the Seventh River, with their apartment on the second floor. Growing up, she learned how to make her own sweets, and even helped out in the shop from time to time. Every night, she would lie on her bed and look outside at the Wall, and try to see what had been added on since the last night. Eventually, the people she saw began to take on lives of their own in her head, and she started imagining what their lives were like, up there in the clouds, looking down at the rest of them, who surely seemed so tiny amidst the great wide majesty of the sky and the lands beyond the Wall. Unfortunately, her parents' candy shop began to go into decline, and her father, with nowhere else to go, beseeched an influential billionaire for his help. He gave it, but under one condition; that he take Maria as a wife. Naturally, this did not appeal at all to Maria or her parents, so they accepted his aid, then had Maria flee onto the Wall. She came equipped with as much candy and as many clothes as she could pack, a pad of paper and a pencil (for her sigil), and mixed emotions; she was finally going to be able to work on the Wall and see beyond it, like she'd always dreamed, but she was also being pursued by a ruthless billionaire who wanted her for a wife. Nonetheless, she won't let that dampen her good spirits, and greets everyone with a sunny smile and a piece of homemade candy.

MAGICAL INVENTORY: Maria has one sigil, which she memorized just before she left for the Wall. It turns whatever it's written on into what's essentially a mine, but instead of exploding, it emits a great burst of air, enough to propel someone several steps back or into the air briefly. Normally, this only acts as a distraction while Maria legs it, but up on the Wall, one wrong step can mean your doom.

@Eodwyn Aether I like him! :D Liam seems a tiny bit behind the times, unless you mean for the poorer part of town to rely on old-fashioned work? We're in an age of robots, laser guns and hoverboats! You're approved either way, just making sure we're thinking the same era. :)

@Tojin Maria's so sweet! xD Approved, of course!

@MokleyI know of which the era we are in! do thou take me for a buffoon?!

That was a joke. Anyways Liam's master is very old (although I do not know how old) and some of the things Liam was given were in the blacksmiths family for many years and were given to the first son of each new generation. However the blacksmith's wife was *cough cough* infertile *cough Cough* so they never had a son. So when Carter came around they treated him like the son the never had and gave him those things and he restored them. So yeah.... gotta love NPC backstories.

Edit: and yeah I imagined the poorer part of town to be a place with blacksmiths and stuff. Hope thats okay with you...

Edit twoooo: And uh thanks for the approval....should have started with the thanks huh? yeah......

odd question, since the wall is being built to defend against these unique creatures, would are characters need weaponry? obviously some characters have magic and tools but would something such as a gun be out of the question? I mean I guess you wouldnt want to put something like that in the hands of a convict. I found a pretty good picture for my character though, he just so happens to be holding a gun. thus the question.

Another question for everyone: what do you hope to do or accomplish in this rp? What sort of stuff are you excited about? The one thing that kills my rps most often is the fact that a lot of my crazy nonsensical plot twists are never as awesome as I think they are, haha! I want to do this one justice, and make sure that this game at least attempts to be everything you expected! So lemme know you expectations -- it'd help write a lot. :)

The wall and the Grit are interesting concepts. I'd love to see the story behind them grow. As long as the story goes, I'd be more than happy. Like others, plot twists are the best. Hope we get lots of 'em in the RP.

With such a huge variety of characters already, "Moth" is small and meek enough that he could get lost in the fray. He's intellectually overconfident but extremely self-conscious and awkward around others. I'd like to see him eventually evolve from a dorky loser into something of a dorky badass. The story sounds like it could go any number of ways, so I'd like to see if Moth will be able to change with the times, or will stubbornly cling to his past and get left behind. I'd love to see how the others evolve as well. So much variety and so many paths. This will be neat!

@Eodwyn Aether ok cool! I can totally see there being a section of the city that lives more simply. :)

Because the wall is so high, I imagine it's extremely rare that the wall guards would need to use violence - the Grit simply don't bother attacking. The builders on the wall are not dangerous people; I think they're thieves at worst, but mostly they're just down on their luck. Dangerous people will be kept in prison. The policy on no weapons isn't very well enforced, especially if your character makes friends with the guards. There's no reason to have a weapon, but if you do nobody makes a fuss.

@Riptide@Dud Thanks for the feedback! We'll definitely explore the Grit, the wall, and character development!

@drewccapp heeyyy! can't wait to see the cs! ;)

To everyone: how do you feel about maybe using video game physics/mechanics? Specifically I'm thinking of methods of collecting objects in order to accomplish certain goals and gain power. There would be no numbers involved at all, but just the basic concept of magic power gems, for example. XD

Thank you! I had a sudden idea when I was on the tube yesterday evening, of someone examining a piece of machinery by looking through their forefinger/thumb to zoom in and shining a light on the machinery using their other palm... Hopefully it'll come in use in the story at some point!

I'm not very clear on what you mean here (collecting power gems to unlock certain abilities?), but as long as it doesn't feel too out of place with the setting I don't mind at all :)

My character, Ethan, has an enchanted gun, so it stands to reason that yours could.

Depends how this would work. I'm already gonna have Ethan collecting more stuff, that's like his thing, but I'm up for whatever.

Also, are the grits capable of magic? IE would there be sigils and runes beyond the wall? and what is the other way from the wall, back towards civilization?

NAME: Vincent David DeMoore

ABSTRACT: Cocky Teen with a Perfect Memory and Way too much Energy

DETAIL: Born to an old family of Rune Mages, Vincent is the heir to the family's legacy. He grew up without a want for anything on the family estate. He was an only child and got all the affection from his parents and grandparents. Because of this he grew up believing that he was the best thing in the world. Very quickly he learned that he never forgot anything he saw or heard and decided to make us of this talent the best he could.

On his sixteenth birthday as per family tradition his father created a magic item for Vincent: a writing implement that can write on anything. His father then donated the item he received from his father as was family tradition for the use of those that need it. His father then told him that there were always those less fortunate than themselves and had a responsibility to help those that needed it. Vincent didn't say anything, but he felt like he only had a need to take care of himself and that others were totally able to take care of themselves. He began his training as a rune mage the next day.

He only halfheartedly committed himself to learning as he could passively pay attention and memorize. Even so he ended up discovering that the entire theory and practice behind rune magics were extraordinarily difficult. His father eventually realized Vincent's lack of spirit about learning rune magic and on the eve of his 17th birthday, Vincent was sent to the Wall in an attempt to awe the boy into a change of heart. Little did his father know that this would be the last time they'd see each other.

MAGICAL INVENTORY: Vincent has a few sigils properly memorized and a single magical item created through rune magic gifted to him by his father.

He knows a sigil that creates a cup of water if drawn on an object that could be used as a container for water.

He knows a sigil that tells true north when used.

He knows a sigil that can stop bleeding, but isn't strong enough to actually heal a wound. It needs to make contact with the injured part of the body at some point or it will not work.

The magical item is a stylus styled pen that draws out white ink and can be used on any object. This item holds a piece of Vincent's father's soul and is very dear to the young man. The ink glows in the dark. It is a pen however, therefor mistakes are very much permanent until the ink wears out.

Yea, being out of place is my concern. Not necessarily unlocking abilities, but increasing that dream power when using sigils, or breaking other people's spells, things like that. It'd be best explained by doing it IC, I think.

Also, are the grits capable of magic? IE would there be sigils and runes beyond the wall? and what is the other way from the wall, back towards civilization?

The Grit are capable of magic, yes. They rely on it exclusively, since they don't have the technology that the city folk do. So there are sigils beyond the walls, but no runes. The Grit never enchant things, and the only enchanted items they have were stolen from passing traders.

I'm not sure I understand the second question? :) The city is built within the circle of the wall -- people are so crammed into the space that the buildings are stacked on top of one another, with bridges and walkways and floating boats to get around. Also teleportation sigils. The only way in and out of the wall is to use the teleportation sigils: there's a sigil inside the wall, which is connected to the sigil engraved on the outside. Touch one, appear at the other. Teleportation sigils are all over the city; each connects to one other sigil somewhere else in the city, though some people have drawn their own that go who knows where.

I'm thinking out loud, 'scuse me. xD

@drewccapp All we needed was a smartass self-absorbed failed-mage teenager with a magic pen. Approved. :3

@Mokley liked this, and said I should post it in OOC.

So I have this image in my head, of an endless green plain. The sky is a deep, brilliant blue with shining white clouds flowing across it, casting mile-wide shadows on the land below. The plain extends for countless miles in all directions, to the horizon, and in the middle, a single massive tower. It's a hundred times taller than it is wide. But it's not a tower, so much as an enormous tube. And at the bottom, a huge bustling metropolis, a marvel of science and magical technology. Mirrors on the inside of the walls reflect sunlight down below, else it would have minutes of daylight at a time, if at all.

youtube.com/watch?v=L43_sGZ37_4

Roll intro credits.

Slow pan across a marketplace, or a busy intersection. A skyscraper-sized screen flashes into life and the queen smiles and waves to her people. Camera low, angled upward as white birds flutter past and up along the wall. Cut to the parapet of the Wall. The view pans left to right, cutting to a visitor's overlook, past Gabriel leaning against a column, Maria offering Elliana some candy, Reina filming birds, Vincent and Katrina milling about, Moth running in and out of frame. The view cuts again and contiues panning, past Dazz and Davis overseeing construction, Florence and Emmitt laughing at a shared joke, Liam handling a massive rivet gun as Old Otto shakes his head dismissively. Ethan strolls past, whistling nonchalantly. Rapid cut, at a low, sharp angle, as groups of two or three of the named characters all look up in shock, some on the edge of joy, some the verge of terror. Cut to a distant view of the city from the plains. Shadows descend upon the wall. Brilliant white flares across the view as the title coalesces in a curving, art deco script.
