American Dream: Shattered Union

United We Stand, Divided We Fall

"My country tis of thee,
Lost land in anarchy,
Of thee I weep.

Land where our fathers died,
Land of our fallen pride.
From every sea side,
Oh save us please."

IC

No one really knows how it all started, but humanity finally destroyed itself. Every day new tales of horror and war while every night people prayed to see the daylight once more. The endless cycles of war, destruction, poverty had finally took its toil on people around the work as they protested and revolted against their governments. Soon, there was no nations left standing, nothing that what could have been called a proper nation anyways. Europe was reduced to fractured kingdoms, Russia had been lost to the snow, Africa was scared by a myriad of warlords while various dynasties and leaders rose in China all claiming to be the true inheritors of the land.

As for America, the once great nation had closed its doors for the first time in over 200 years. But like all other great nations, she too fell. The collapse sparked hundreds of new entities, fighting for power in the new vacuum left by the fallen government. No more was there a union of states and people, the American dream had died with its 47th and last president and with it left a wasteland.

However, man is not alone on this world anymore. With the infinite number of WMDs that had been dropped, the world has changed. New monsters called Grimm now roam the landscape, hellbent on exacting vengeance upon mankind for its greatest sin against nature. But then there are those changed by the mutations, those who exhibit inhuman or superhuman traits from everyone else. Known by many different names, polite and derogatory, the umbrella term for them is Evols. However, these Evols are almost universally looked at with horror or distain as they can turn into suddenly feral beasts or look too different for most to feel comfortable around them; some of the more superstitious folk say that they are the root of all evil and must be purged to reform America.

Now, in a world in ruins and a dream of a nation reformed, factions from coast to coast look into the sky and set out on the journey to reunited a shattered union.

OOC

Welcome to Shattered Union, an NRP set in a post apocalyptic America where the idea of government barely exists on what we'd call a state level today. The world has gone through a massively destructive war in an attempt to seemingly drive humanity to extinction; nukes, biochemicals, fire, everything man has created up to this point was used. America, like so many other former nations, had isolated itself and is now fractured, splintered and unrecognizable. Warlords, monarchs, presidents, and chiefs now rule from east to west, creating new factions, nations and tribes in their own image and interpretations of America.

One major point I would like to make is that this will most likely be a rather dark NRP; there are no demons but no one is a saint. Everyone in the wasteland follows some perverted, bastardized version of American ideals, some more zealously than others. Remember, there is no light which casts no shadow. However, that does not mean there cannot be lighthearted nations or events, you can have post apoc cowboys or revolutionary-era militaries but just keep them somewhat serious. The best way to describe this would be like Madoka Magika; looks harmless but can get dark real quick.

RULES

  • Standard Guild rules
  • Keep arguing, bitching and dramatics to PM lest you want me to shove my fist into your ass
  • Special point about politics; try to keep irl politics out of this. With a setting like this, its going to get messy if people start yelling about politics
  • My word as GM is law and my decisions are final. This also extends to the poor sods people I choose as co-GMs
  • Be balanced and creative! Seriously this is one of my pet peeves when someone half asses an NS and makes an OP faction or gives me carbon copied bland
  • Shit's going to be grimdark but it has limits. Yes there are going to be things considered somewhat taboo but make sure you keep a lid on it before it gets to out of control. I don't mind violence or cursing but if your faction has some more... discriminatory traits, DO NOT over do it. It will get messy for all people involved. (If you somehow get something sexual going guild rules force me to say keep it to PMs. Damn >_>)
  • Try your best to not leave as much WIP parts as you can. Everyone knows that it rarely gets done.
  • There is no "true victory". Even if you conquer everyone else, you will fall to the same trap that the original US government did, you need external allies to help you and reform the US and its states. Remember, united we stand divided we fall. (tl;dr this will be more story-based and you cannot win by yourself).
  • Even if IC posts slow down, at least stick around in the OOC. I don't really mind if it gets off topic either.
  • Writing level will be at about high casual aka advanced but even if you have a single paragraph post, that's still good as long as its good.
  • Please use tinypic to post claims and maps, my computer disagrees with imgur and some other sites :\
  • Have fun! No, seriously do have fun. Why else do you RP if you don't have fun with it? :3

NATION SHEET

(Fill this out at your own leasure or as you need it. Just remember to fill something out in the NS if you're going to mention it IC like going on the warpath but lacking any military info on the NS.)

CLAIMS MAP

(If anyone can produce a better version of a map like this, I would be thankful)
(Also no Hawaii or Alaska plz)

The current time is around the mid 2020s more or less. No one actually knows the set date since... well... there is no unified authority on it and some places have already changed dates around or completely reset the date back to 0.

EDIT: I might actually push the date a forward so that society has been more established and let people have more freedom in designing their nation as not be completely stuck in the post-apoc wasteland tribal sort of period. Have some actual working tech maybe.

Like I state before, the rest of the world is pretty much fucked over and the UK is in a similiar spot.
However, you could have someone who is trying to be as British as they possibly can and either think's they're working for the Crown or is just trying to be straight up Britten. Something like that.
Would that be acceptable?

Expect a North Carolina-based military dictatorship headed by two completely insane people. I've never done anything like that before.

Thank you to everyone who has posted some interest so far!

Quick question for you all: What kind of tech level do you want this to be at? Should it be:

1) True post-apoc with scrap metal and crappy looking uniforms?
or
2) Not post-apoc and basically have semi-modern stuff (barring a few things)?

@ClocktowerEchos

I'd go with a mixture. The only "modern" technology the nations should get would be stuff salvaged from before the war. Tanks that happened to be far enough away to survive the blasts, planes that were in transit when the bombs went off, that sort of thing. The only way to produce anything at this point (side from food, because who would nuke a farm?) should be by cobbling things together and other such small-scale operations. No factories after the bombs go off.

I'm... Hm. This is a very interesting concept.

I'm debating between either joining this RP or another NRP I expressed interest in, so don't sign me on as a "100% going to join" person. I really, really like the concept, but another huge factor for me is how often you want the IC section to update. I suppose that's something you'll probably decide once you have more participants? Or did you already have an idea?

Either way, even if I don't join: this is a REALLY neat concept and I think you presented it well. Kudos.

EDIT: If I do join, I'll probably try to play someone that at least thinks they're fighting the good fight. I'm a goodie-two-shoes player at heart. Forgive me.

That's okay ^^

As for the last bit, go read up the Tau from 40k. They have a very authoritarian and harsh rule but its wrapped in a way that makes it seem like its all good and stuff and for the "greater good" even though its clearly Orwellian at its core.

Definitely the kind of thing I was thinking - someone that THINKS they're doing good but isn't actually, y'know, running a perfect society.

(Warhammer 40k is one of my favorite universes, so I'm already familiar with the Tau.)

But yeah, I'd really be interested in knowing what sort of posting frequency you have in mind for the IC section - if you've already got one in mind, that is. I basically don't want to sign up for something and then duck out because I can't post as often as required.

If that's the case then I would recommend putting yourself in an out of the way place (like Maine or somewhere up there) and try not to give people a reason to really go and bug you.

That's actually really fair. Alright. I'll keep that in mind.

I'll probably be able to give you an answer about whether I'm joining this RP or not by the time the main thread rolls around. I've got to choose one of two NRPs so I don't overextend myself. And again, this is just a really well presented thread.

Don't worry about it mate. Also thanks for the compliment c:

As a note to everyone else, there are going to be some changes once I decide to make an OOC. The two largest will be more of a detailed description of what the weather is now generally like for America and an NPC faction lead by the "Patriot" who will be causing all kinds of troubles for everyone.

Clocktower, this app is the very reason people stick some into perpetual WIP.

For the fuck of it all:

Name:
Michigan
Flag:

Nation Type:
Republic
Claims:

Terrain:
Comprised of two distinct peninsula the state of Michigan comprises a region of stark geographical contrast.

The Upper Peninsula was even before the war a rugged sparsely populated part of the state. Dense forests cover the U.P and the ancient Porcupine Mountains dominate the western edge of the peninsula.

The Lower Peninsula is much more dominated by signs of Michigan's ancient glacier-cut landscape with numerous glacier-carved hills and moraines cut by the receding glacial shield.

Each peninsula being bordered on three sides each by the mighty Great Lakes gives the pseudo-nation the title of the longest freshwater coastline of any state or province in the world, and with it access to the fisheries of the Great Lakes and the mercantile opportunities of trade groups moving through the Great Lakes, whether from up through Chicago to Buffalo or from Canada to throughout.

On the Great Lakes themselves numerable sheltered bays provide natural shelters for travelers seeking to dodge the Lake's infamous autumn storms and naturally protected pockets for regional ports.

Once more the interior of the state has flecked with many smaller freshwater lakes as important to local economies as the larger Great Lakes. And as an inverse, Michigan lays claims to the numerous small islands themselves found in the Great Lakes; many undisturbed by old-world development as in the days of yore they were protected as wild-life refuges and offer up bountiful natural resources and outposts for the new post-Apocalyptic regime.

Government Type:
The government of the State of Michigan mirrors that of the old world government, with a recognized Governor General with executive power and two independent legislative houses. A Supreme Court operates as the highest interpretative authority in the state's laws.

Capital:
Lansing

Head of State:
Richard "Rich" Colman.

Other Important People:
Andrew Steffonson - Speaker of the House
Frank Haufman - Speaker of the Senate

Population:
3.8 million

Attitude Towards Evols:
Negative

Economic System:
Capitalism

Resources:
Cherries, Blueberries, Pickling cucumbers, Navy beans, soy, corn, wheat, dairy, wool, copper, timber, coal, fish,

Currency:
Michigan Dollar

Technology:
Post-Apocalyptic reconstruction cottage industry

Official Religion:
Christianity (Protestant, Catholic)

Religious Information:
Adherence to faith in Michigan is in the typical Protestant style where there is no head of church, as well as continuation of the old-school virtue of separation of church and state meaning there is no federally appointed faith leader for all denominations.

While Christianity is the largest branch of faith (with over 80% of individuals) a collection of alternative faiths are practiced but are hardly anymore than 10% of the present population.

History:
Prior to zero hour in the war that ended civilization the Michigan state legislature and government evacuated Lansing on warning from the US Government, taking with them much of Lansing with them as they escaped the state capital to avoid nuclear devastation, like-wise as elsewhere in the state. As a result, when the bombs dropped the damage was merely artificial with East Lansing having taken the brunt of the assault, sweeping away the university and throwing against downtown Lansing the force of the shock-wave.

As the fires of nuclear Armageddon dimmed, efforts to make contact with the federal US government in the United States met with ill success as Washington DC met their approaches with an eerie, sepulcher silence. Over the following weeks it became evident that they were alone and the United States as it had been was no more. Looking ahead, the people saw the blackened hardships of post-apocalyptic devastation. While such a devastating attack evoked a strong unity supplies were doomed to run out eventually and incapable of meeting the demand rampant starvation afflicted the people of Michigan and the inability for the medical system to be properly supplied and maintained over the long term meant that many persons died of otherwise preventable causes.

Attempts to lighten the burden of survival by the state government that had moved temporarily west to Grand Rapids was met with poor results and they could not do much to relieve the stress and millions eventually died to starvation and poor medical treatment: not to the bombs. In a flash of a light and a flickering smoldering over less than a year Michigan smoldered back to the 19th century.

Between then and now claimant governments tried to seize power in Michigan forcing the state government to seize the National Guard units and State Police and turn them into an effective military force to pacify the unrest. The survival of the state government was determined by the force of arms.

Ultimately, the conditions in Lansing were deemed safe enough to return to the city, and what could not be repaired was taken down and the rights and responsibilities of the state government in the city was resumed with pomp on a cold mid-February.

Culture:
Yoopers hunt with abandon and Trolls do everything else.

Military Numbers:
85,000 active-duty personnel.

Military Units:
The present military was drawn from the already present American National Guard and the State Police. Although in the interim years both had to be reformed and redesigned to operate in a much more militarized fashion than before. These groups have been renamed to designate their present function and are respectively known as the the Michigan Republican Guard and the Michigan Active Reserve (operating more as a part-time army with personnel trained as full soldiers to be called to duty when needed).

In the unofficial respect a number of decentralized groups have evolved who pledge their services to the government in an ad-hoc unofficial military means often referred to simply as The Rangers, though they may go by a number of alternative names themselves such as The Aventurier.
