I'm going to see if I can play India (which involves not only seeing if that ends up being realistic (i.e. Britain losing the Great War) and if the guy would be willing to lose one of his best colonies. If not, then I want Colombia, and would like to tentatively reserve that nation. Joint Owned Sounds Fantastic, and the way you put it, Colombia could very well but out the U.S. with money it gets from the Canal and eventually provide it with it's own security force. Colombia rockets back to the top echelons of my list.
Just saw this. Dude, I really doubt you can buy the canal back. I am even surprised the US player let Colombia have so many benefits from it. The control will be mostly enforced by the US and if it's violated... well, just see the US invasion of Panama. Don't let it deter you from playing Colombia, though. The benefts you've gotten' are great and the fact you can excercise a little power over the canal is good on its own, seeing how Colombia is, by this age, pretty darn undeveloped. Watch out for internal strife and try to solve the Conservador-Liberal conflict before it blows up on your face again, there's a hegemony of Conservador presidents until 1930 if I remember correctly. You will save a lot of trouble later if you solve this now, believe me. Basically most conflicts within Colombia stemmed from these kind of rivalries that can be traced to the Gran Colombia. But anyways, I digress. Good luck leading Colombia!
Also, I don't know if the Thousand Days' War happened or not. That devastated the country as a whole, so if it didn't happen it'll be good for you.
pssst you also have the
oldest commercial airline in the western hemisphere.
