I hate it when people tell me not to post in the OOC because I spam. I don't conciser chatting spam. But there it is. I just hate being singled out and booted. It makes me feel awful. Am I really that annoying to have around? And it really makes me not want to continue to post IC.

I love, love, love to chat with other people in the roleplay about anything and everything. I don't see a purpose for an Out of Character thread if the topics only ever meant to be about the Roleplay. I mean, there's a time and place for everything and when things are supposed to get down to business wouldn't you think the GM would alert people of that? And wouldn't you think said GM would consider and assume his/her players are mature enough to get serious and back on track when needed?

I dunno. I don't join any RP that's ever strict with their OOC rules because without a rapport between players, all we're doing is throwing words at each other. If we don't care about the person behind the character, why should we care about the character in the first place? Or the setting? Or the plot?

I for one am more inclined to drop an RP without a word (because we all do it) and just disappear if no one's talking in the OOC and no one's attempting to befriend each other. If I don't enjoy the people in the RP, regardless of how enraptured I am with the plot or the characters, then I have nothing tying me to the RP itself. This is why an active OOC = an active IC about 90% of the time (I'm pulling that statistic out of my ass, but a majority of the time, it's pretty true, isn't it?).

But, yeah, I find this a big issue and it's not really something I normally see, but I do see it on occasion. Like perusing through Int. Checks and OOCs and seeing those rules specifically for OOC chatter. I nope the fuck out the moment I see it because I'm not going to have fun just talking about what we're doing in the IC. If I wanted to know what's going on, I'd read all the posts and get the general gist from there. That's a barrier for me. I don't get to show people who I am beyond my writing style and vice versa. There's a block there that we aren't allowed to traverse and I think it really hurts RPs unless people actively try to communicate outside of the forum's OOC.

But the problem with putting up a chatzy or giving skype info out is, well, time zones for one, but it also sucks the life out of the OOC if that's the only place people are allowed to discuss anything beyond the roleplay. If that were me, you know, I'd just take any and all discussion, RP, off-topic, spam, all of it and just translate it over to the chat system. What's the use of the OOC if I can just talk to people in real time on skype? Thus, the RP looks dead, keeps people from joining, especially if others drop out which that's pretty much a guarantee and is a good way to kill your roleplay.

So, yeah, I never agree with anyone who makes an effort to sanction the OOC to only Roleplay discussion. It's a quick way to derail interest, keep people distanced from each other, etc. In the beginnings of a roleplay, with strangers especially, I default to a formal type of writing that's very detached until I get comfortable. If I'm not allowed that deflation from 'srs rp talkz' to 'ludicrous arguments about why bananas are berries' then I have no reason to attach myself to the RP and cultivate my interest. I don't know these people beyond 'srs rp talkz' (though I'm not talking about gimme your life story, just gimme the person beyond the writer)

Ludicrous arguments about why bananas are berries aside, I'm really just talking about a general rapport rather than gif spamming threads and screaming 100% of the time. I'm more so talking about getting to know your other roleplayers beyond their character and their place in the plot. What is a roleplay without a strong player base to hold it up? though i dont condone actually trolling and spamming your other rp partners because that's not cool man stay within the bounds of RPGs rules you know?

also sorry if i misinterpreted your post i just took what i thought you were talking about and ran with it haha >> << er

I've seen that before. I've seen people leave the game because the OOC gets so much activity that people feel they are missing if they can't check it daily, even if the IC is updated only every other day.

I dunno, I see both sides to this. I love talking to people, so I use the OOC frequently, but I can also get behind seeing a large amount of text you missed. I don't think you should be singled out and booted for it though. If people have a problem with it, take it up with you or set up Skype or some other chat service if it becomes a huge issue.

I too am on the fence about the balance of chatter and RP talk, but there's a time and place where one is allowed to overtake the other without it causing too much of a problem. As an example I talk about my RC racing sometimes and even post up pics for others to see. It's actually a cool thing to talk about cause I find people always asking questions about it and I'm happy to tell them the answer. It allows the others to understand me more, and therefore understand my personality and why my characters are designed in certain ways.

@Blue Demon, you mentioned you got singled out for 'spamming' about general conversation, but I've also seen the exact opposite. I have memories of one RP where I left for the night and came back to 50+ posts about the RP where two people were bouncing so many ideas off each other that it wasted everyone else's time. There should be a balance between the two but in my opinion I would rather the balance to lean more towards your direction because if you can generate a team of RPers that are friends, I'm sure they'll stick around and help out any GM in the long run. :)

People who can't express their opinions, but will totally go along with whatever the fuck I say and then when push comes to shove they disappear or stop responding.

This one psycho, and how I can't seem to get rid off them. Sure, I'll never have to interact with them again personally, but now they roped someone I like into their stuff. I don't know if I should warn that person about them or not.

Maybe I'm just being impatient, and should let others make their own mistakes.

I do wonder why there's TWO of these. XD

@HalfOfLancelot Oh god people DO that? O.o Isn't the entire fucking point of an OOC to talk about the RP and talking to the people outside of IC. I'd go nuts if people told me, I can't talk in an OOC...That's why it exists...do discuss events in the RP and shit. I guess use PM's next time so they shut the hell up. XD

I like the concept. Since I haven't really gotten involved in this community before, I'll talk about a previous one.

1. People who attach their ego to their character and become so eager to shine their character in an awesome light that they're unrealistic in abilities.

2. People who break character in RP because of OOC issues with a person.

3. When GMs break their own rules

2.1. Even better: when they subsequently deny doing so despite ample evidence to the contrary.
2.2. Even better-er: when their character is specifically designed to basically be themselves with superpowers on top of that. (See 1.)

It's a constant across a ton of roleplaying mediums. My closest experience with it was in MMOs.

Something that actually bothers me tho and people keep doing is using the "nation" tag when their RP isn't a Nation RP or anything to do with actually running a nation or something. I mean jesus fuck people, its pretty goddamn self explanatory. Y'all had one job and yet you still manage to fuck it up >.>

There are definitely some gray areas, note. I made a roleplay which is based around everyone running a clan... but everyone is part of the same clan, and does a clan count as a nation, and does it matter if it has the same elements of intrigue and politics and diplomacy and war, and does it matter if it also is about adventure and mythology and honoring your ancestors and etc.?

I was very unsure whether or not I should pick "Nation" as a theme even though I felt it definitely belonged in the Nation section.

In my eyes, if you're putting an RP into the Nation section then there is no problem with using the Nation tag, hell you probably should have it in actual fact.

I'm talking about the RP that have nothing to do with RPing a Nation/anything-close-to-one and just put it in since all the players are in a fantasy nation/world. I seriously do not understand why people misuse the Nation tag so much, is it really that hard to use some common sense?

Oh. Yeah, that... Yeah.

Although I can definitely see how it'd happen. If you never poke around the Nation RP section, you may have NO IDEA what a Nation RP is all about, so you brand something with the Nation tag because... you think it means something it very much does not?

Just sounds like something people need to be prodded about each time they do it.

That sounds like labelling yourself/your friends as something you have no idea what it actually means. Like saying that you're "salacious" since you think it means charming but haven't looked it up to know what it actually means.

That said, it literally says on the front page:

Nation Roleplay:
Create and control a nation that collides with other nations through political, economic, and diplomatic warfare.

One would expect someone to see that at some point in their RPing carrer or figure make the connection that Nation RP =/= RPing in a fantasy nation.

Well, if it's in the interest of advancing the RP, then it's totally fine - but, otherwise, you're just being a dick.

Oh, I didn't mean the story-telling aspect of it/generating events. I've seen mods make characters that didn't conform to the standards they'd set for no real reason other than they wanted it for personal use, and also roleplay scenarios that they'd specifically banned. For an example, I remember running across a site once where they'd banned mature sexual content, except the owner decided to break that rule in the public forum anyway... it was rather bizarre.
