In a moment, I'm gonna roll out the most naive ratelimit implementation I can build:

New users start off with a 5 minute ratelimit. For every post they make, the ratelimit drops by 30 seconds, thus the ratelimit goes away after their 10th post.

It's not very polished yet, but I want to test it in its current state before polishing it. The polish is the hard part.

Also, the ratelimit is by IP address so that spammers can't just switch accounts without also switching IP address.

Deploying the initial version of the ratelimit. If you're having trouble, let me know on roleplayerguild.com/chat.

Things that need to be improved with it:

- The "Submit Post/Topic" form should be aware of how long you have to wait before you can submit the form. Right now you have to just submit it and see if you get the "Wait X seconds and try again" error.
- The ratelimit should be even more relaxed if you're posting from a residential IP address.
- Mods need a way to quick-approve users so that legitimate ones don't have a ratelimit at all.
- Mods should be able to tweak the ratelimit duration so that we can respond to the level of spam we're getting.

Now I'm going to work on a platform upgrade for the Guild that should improve performance.

Edit: Looks like there might be some database contention with the ratelimit that is timing out requests. I'll investigate. Might've just been a fluke. Update: It was just a fluke.

Update: Host images on the Guild

I just deployed the start of a simple image-upload system so that you can host your roleplay-related images on the Guild instead of hosting them offsite. The benefit of hosting images on the Guild is that the images will stick around as long as your roleplays, and features can evolve from it like an image-album system and a comment system.

You'll notice a new "Images" tab on everyone's profile.



Here's my page: roleplayerguild.com/users/mahz/images

Planned features:

- Organize images into albums DONE
- Move images between albums
- Delete images DONE
- Delete albums
- Edit images
- Edit albums DONE
- Mark albums as private (so only you can see them)
- Comments
- Shared albums (give others permission to post pics to your album)

The system needs more work, but it's usable.

Additional features I would recommend:
The ability to edit the image description or add one if one does not exist after it has been uploaded.
An easy method to immediately assign your profile picture to one of your stored images.

A thought: Pictures are significantly more storage consuming than text. If these images are stored in full resolution, the Guild requires enough storage to support hosting these images. This could become expensive quickly.

I tried uploading a 7mb image to stress test the Images tab, now it continuously sends me to the Application Error page without letting me take it out of my Images tab.
