So I'm curious, does anyone have a particular way/method that they use when they create Bleach characters in comparison to other characters?

For example, I personally like to figure out the core "themes" of my character first. From these themes I decide what the personality/history is or what the Zanpakuto's personality, inner world, and abilities do. Depending on if I do the Zanpakuto before the shinigami I then decide what aspect of the individual the Zanpakuto is actualizing into an ability OR I figure out how the personality can be shaped into an ability for the zanpakuto.

I tend to use symbolism to help me weave the two together since Bleach states that a shinigami's zanpakuto is intrinsically tied to their personality and background. I try to accentuate the connection between the two as a result of this.

Am I the only one?

I was just curious as I never explicitly asked anyone about their methodology or whatnot...so yeah haha ^^;

@yoshua171 Funny you should mention that, but I actually do it very differently than other typer of characters ^^. With Bleach characters I tend to start with their Zanpakuto-spirit: it's personality, the inner world, then the abilities of the Shikai (and possibly the Bankai). When I have established these I create the character around these "themes" or "ideas". I think the reason for why I do it this way is because I see the spirit as the essence of a Shinigami and the seed for how the Shinigami acts and develops.
An example could be one of my pre-existing characters whose manipulative and teasing persona came from her Zanpakuto's trickster-like personality and illusion based abilities.

Not sure this is the best way, but I have just always done it like this for some reason or another...

That's pretty pretentious for making a shonen character I just treat it like making a flashier superhero with some gimmick or cool aesthetic theme and go from there

So I'm not the only one who uses core themes for my Bleach characters, weee haha. I'm similar, but I start with core ideas, expand from there and decide on "Shinigami(history/personality)," or "Zanpakuto(Abilities and whatnot)," and go from there.

The character I'm working on now, and the one I made previously, I've actually used Tarot cards (because I have a deck so why not) to tell me what sort of background/person the character is. The last one I did it for, Hiakarui, I drew "The Moon," and "The Sun," and it ended up really interesting. He has a calm/serene and solemn personality on the surface, but is fiery, passionate, and enthusiastic at his core. He has a conflict with this internal part of him because fire can also burn and be very offputting for some people and he rather be accepted/be caring and compassionate for others.

His zanpakuto ended up being really multifaceted. I related it to some symbolism for the Sun and Moon and then an Eclipse where the two meet. I even had him unable to master his Bankai since he hasn't accepted all of himself and thus cannot accept or conquer his sword spirit entirely.

My current character seems to be very related to the idea of "transition."

Name: Mirja Eerola

Appearance:

Age:
Looks about thirty, in human years. Acts, much less mauturely.

Gender: Iron Man

Height: 6'2

Weight: 22 stone (308 pounds, 139 kilos)

Hair Colour: Pink

Eye Colour: Silver

Birthday: Oct 13th

Clan/Family: N/A

Race: Soul

Rank: Lieutenant

Spiritual Energy Colour: N/A

Personality: Mirja can seem rather cold and hostile towards men, but she has an inherent distrust of them, not really sure why but she does. Breasts, on the other hand, have always enamoured her. The bigger they are, the more amazed she is that they exist. She doesn't really understand much about a person's rank unless told outright that they are super Soul Reapers and need smiling at instead of glaring or oggling. She is protective of a scar starting on her forehead and running up, getting lost in her hair, and will always try to change the topic whenever she can if it is brought up. If they press the topic, and are a low enough rank, she will punch the person in the face, and if they are much higher than her, she will grab a small pouch that is always on her hip and throw it up in the air, sprinkling confetti and running away dramatically. She does actually posses a serious nature, despite what people would think of her, but she prefers not to do show it very often because it is 'boring'. Her silver eyes make her seem a lot harsher than she is, as they are set in a near-permanent scowl, that deviates completely from how she is.

History: Much of Mirja's life in the Roukonga is absent, and she attributes it to the scar on her head, not sure if the two are connected, but thinking it sounds about right. In the academy, she liked making friends, and was always ready to help someone, but really struggled with her Zanjutsu lessons, and her Kido for that matter, due to her unique nature. Her form and swing style is terrible, but that didn't automatically mean she was going to lose, since her extremely dense body and terrofyingly powerful muscles could take someone out with a single swing, if she managed to hit them. She also wondered why the training swords where straight, but the full Soul Reapers got curved swords. It was mind-boggling. Curved. Swords. However, despite her failures in this area, she excelled immensely in Hoho and Hakuda, which allowed her to graduate and become a Soul Reaper, even if she didn't know what end of the man the sword went into.

Of course, she grew into her role a little more as she got older, and eventually discovered that it was the pointy end that went into the man, but still never really liked using her Zanpaktou. It just didn't really feel natural. So she used her fists for everything, making rice cakes and punching people in the head. The 11th squad was perfect for her, due to her inability to use Kido, and their dislike of anyone who did use Kido. It was like a match made in punchy heaven. And so she became the Pink Chef of 11th Squad, always making Rice Cakes and other assorted goodies, while punching anyone who tried to steal her food. And a punch from Mirja was something to be frightened of.

Relationships/Friendships/Rivalries/Siblings: Anyone with boobs - good friend. Most guys - scowl-bait
Other: Short Shihakusho, cuts off around the thighs, and has short sleeves, exposing as much body as it covers. Never wears shoes. Has a uniquely dense Reiryoku, imparing her ability to release Spiritual Pressure and use Kido, but granting her incredible physical fortitude and strength as a result.

~Zanpakuto~

Zanpakuto name: Beowulf

Type: Atmospheric/Melee

Zanpakuto Shikai Release command: 'The night is dark, and I am scared. So scared, and alone. But I have you, so please, lend me your light, to show me the way home'

Spirit Appearance(Optional): Beowulf is a massive creature, twenty foot tall and a living mountain of muscle. Massive veins of light run across his arms and legs, which end in large claws. Four wings strech out from his back, but two small to give a creature of his size flight. A large, whip-like tail sways softly behind him. He is missing an eye, and the other eye shines a deep red, combined with his massive, curved teeth make Beowulf appear extremely hostile and very intimidating. Usually standing on his legs, he sometimes goes onto all fours, to chase something down, or move his head closer to the person he is talking to.

Inner world:
(This gives everyone else an idea of your inner world)

Sealed appearance: Wakizashi

Shikai appearance: Beowulf morphs from a Wakizashi into a set of armoured gauntlets and Greaves. They both posses claws at the end, allowing for swipes as well as punches, or though the claws on the feet are harder to utilize. There are, much like Beowulf's body, veins of light running up both of them, which glow brighter under certain circumstance. They also create a small film across Mirja's eyes, protecting them from sudden flashes of blinding light.

Bankai appearance: (Bankai yet to be revealed)

Shikai special ability:

Shikai skills:
(NOTE: Seated Shinigami have up to 5 skills, Lieutenants and above can have all skills unlocked. Skills must also have cooldowns to prevent spamming)
1. Mighty Creature: Wolf of Bees: This technique takes Beowulf's Light and fills Mirja with it, strengthening her body and allowing her to move quicker than usual. However, she can not use 'Yami no Sekai' or any of it's sub-technique while using this. However, unlike 'Yami no Sekai' it does not rely on her ability to control her Reaitsu, and so is easier to use for her.
(Passive, 0 CD)
2. Wolf of Bees: Concentration: This sub-technique of 'Wolf of Bees' channels the light filling Mirja's body into a certain point, further increasing the strength at the cost of lacking strength to the rest of the body.
(Passive, 2 CD)
3. Titan Theft: Yami no Sekai(World of Darkness): The veins of light running across Beowulf's gauntlets and greaves glow brightly, before starting to absorb the light in the surrounding area, making a small bubble of pure darkness roughly seven feet wide. The technique forces a person - Mirja included - to use their other senses to fight, and opens up several sub-techniques at the same time. The usage of this is slightly draining on her Reaitsu, and can not be done multiple times without exhausting herself. Furthermore, a massive release of opposing Reaitsu will disrupt Mirja's control and destroy the bubble of darkness.
(4 post CD, 5 post max)
4. Yami no Sekai: Keimo(World of Darkness: Enlightenment): After Yami no Sekai is used, this technique beams a blinding shaft of light, directed by Mirja's splayed palm. This technique gains effectiveness the longer the person is under the effects of it's parent technique, since the blinding light does more damage the longer the person's eyes have been exposed to pure darkness.
(1 Post CD)
5. Yami no Sekai: Sentoerumo no jujihoka (World of Darkness: Crossfire of Saint Elmo) In this technique, after the usage of Yami no Sekai, the stolen light is compacted into the palms of the gauntlets, and then Mirja 'draws' a cross in the air, with the number of light photons and their frequency highly increased, pressing eight feet of light into a small cross-shaped area. Once finished, the Cross is launched in the direction of the target, setting them aflame if it hits them, with the electromagnetic energy of light being turned into thermal energy on contact. Also, on impact, the stolen light returns, which puts an end to Yami no Sekai.
(0 CD, but requires Yami no Sekai to be used, so Technically 4 CD)

Bankai skills: (Captains and up can only have Bankai. Note: Some Lieutenants will be able to attain a Bankai)
1.
2.
3.
4.
5. (Ultimate Skill)

Non-lethal Zanpakuto Skills:

(Skills that do not cause harm to an opponent)

Skills & Masteries
(Note: Remember that a GM can help you with the skills as it'll likely be faster and easier)

Zanjutsu: Proficent

Kido: N/A

Hakuda: Expert

Hoho: Mastery

Hmm.. I may join if a captains spot becomes open (preferably 3 perhaps), so in the mean time I'll probably just lurk for now before I figure out what spot I might apply for. The reservations are just making it a bit tricky to figure out what's basically taken.

Indeed -_- Since I goofed on what squad I got the veteran captain thing reserved, but no freaking squad to have them for -_- So does that mean they're just going to be retired or something and still around? Or what? lol. Maybe a rogue? Hmmm I dunno...I need to PM phobos about something...for a new idea perhaps...I dunno...Anyway! Woohoo getting fucked over by missing someone elses post on reserving a slot!
