@Pair of Hearts

I should go and get it looked at, I can't squat like a slav. It pulls on all the wrong parts of poor foot so I can't do anything but Western Spy Squat.

You know how J-Pop and K-Pop are all the rage in Asia? My foot has its own foot-pop every time I try to sit on my feet a la Japanese style. Never fails to make a reliable beat too. It's been five months since the accident.

Don't be like me.

Haha, my point was, "pop". Leave it on its own and your joints will make poppy sounds sometimes. As if being socially awkward with our personality isn't enough.

Why do fandoms always form around shallow shit? Like, back in the day the big fandom was trekkies, and that made sense because Star Trek has enough depth to occupy a superfan. But Sonic? MLP? Those things have nothing to them. Its no wonder they are stereotyped for weird fanart and porn - there isn't really anything else you can do with them.

I can 100% agree with this. There are so many good series that would work as a Fandom based on the history and lore that it has generated over it's time, and yet people choose the cheap way out.

Hahaha— I’m sorry, but you couldn’t be any more wrong on this one.

If your only comprehensive understanding of Sonic the Hedgehog is from the games, then you don’t really any perspective that’s worth much. Not only is Sonic the Hedgehog what got me into role-playing in the first place, but even removing whatever bias I have this statement is not true in the slightest. With over five animated series, a two-episode OVA, two successful comic book franchises, and yes the games that have consistently developed over the course of over twenty years there is a lot to Sonic the Hedgehog as a form and most certainly enough to warrant a fandom by even your standards. Even when I got into RPing at Sonic HQ and Team Artail in 2001 there was enough. The various universes and interpretations of Sonic the Hedgehog have enough lore to validate its fandom. I’ve read both comics since 1995, and believe me when I tell you that you have no idea how massive it actually is.

Sonic got me into drawing, aside from Powerpuffs... I like it.

What I don't really get is MLP... I don't shame it!! I just don't get it... See a lot of pervy stuff about it too, sometimes even with innocent search terms like "pony fanart crossover". >.< Feel bad for the others who genuinely like it for what it is.

You're talking breadth, I'm talking depth. I'm also talking about the source material. You could, say, rewrite War and Peace to have Sonic characters, but that wouldn't give depth to the Sonic source material. You could write your own novel using those characters and it still wouldn't say anything for the source material, with the reason being I could rewrite War and Peace or write my own literature about the results of my bowel movements but that wouldn't mean those aforementioned bowel movements have some sort of intrinsic emotional depth.

At the end of the day, you take the basic source material of what Sonic is and ask yourself if there is anything deep about it. That's what this discussion amounts to. And when I say deep, I mean that the characters and stories at the base of the thing tell us something about life and human experience in a way that isn't superficial and common. Remember that what a fandom produces isn't considered part of the source material. That material in this case would be, like, the video games and saturday morning cartoon. And that's my question from the beginning, "how come all these fandoms latch on to shallow source material".

What I don't really get is MLP

MLP surprised everybody, in all fairness. They got their own fan conventions in less than a year and had a reception that even for a Lauren Faust show was pretty ridiculous. I genuinely started watching the show because Lauren Faust was advertised as the showrunner and enjoyed it well enough, but I never could have anticipated what that show became. Has several comics, several seasons, and a fan-based community that is as welcoming as it is unnerving. Grouped up with a few of the local fans at Youmacon a few years ago and they were a lovely group of awkward nerds. Perversion of fandom will happen with anything, so you need to just distance yourself from that aspect.

You're talking breadth, I'm talking depth.

I'm talking about both.

I'm also talking about the source material.

So am I. Everything I mentioned was official material.

You could write your own novel using those characters

I'm not talking about fanfiction.

That material in this case would be, like, the video games and saturday morning cartoon.

It would also include two comic book franchises, several novellas, and several cartoons (not just one).

"how come all these fandoms latch on to shallow source material".

So in short, your knowledge on the subject is superficial and shallow.

I think my Sonic fan buddy told me about this one scene where a character angst'd over a post-mortem character. (Shadow and Maria?)

Then there was another in which a chick had to die to save the others and the incident scarred her love interest prominently. (Cosmo and Miles?)

But I might be wrong since I wasn't all too interested when she raved about the anime. Yeah.

There’s ton of “deeper” connections you can make about the official (as in licensed and approved by Sega whether it is main continuity or extended universe or whatever) material. There has been philosophical, idealistic, environmental, and other statements stated by several writers through the characters and stories they tell. Presuming otherwise shows a real lack of comprehensive understanding and pretending otherwise is insincere. I've been involved in the fandom for longer than I've been RPing, so trust me when there is a lot more to Sonic then it gets credit for.

Are a lot of the fans utterly insane? Yeah. Doesn't matter.

I would say elaborate because all I am getting is 'You are wrong' and 'People wrote words' but... you know, I really really don't want to have that elaborated to me. Like, ever. The last thing I want to read is an in depth argument about how Sonic the Hedgehog is deep and meaningful. So... we'll call this one a draw so I can go do something else.

Talk about what you know with confidence, and talk about what you don't with humility.

But yeah, now that my little defense is done, I’m going to do something productive like actually RP.

Sorry to steal your limelights, folks, but I've got bitchin' to do.

My mom refuses to reduce contact with a negatively influential friend of hers.

I do not admire that lady at all. Once, her kid was spewing shit in school to make my mom sound like a child abuser on me, and how her mom (the lady) and herself were the reason my mom didn't beat me to death. Inevitably, people regarded them as saint and angel.

I grew up in a traditional Asian family where corporeal punishment is the norm, and I always knew I reaped what I sowed (was a rebellious teen).

I almost lost my mom because of her lies and exaggeration! When I confronted the kid? She cried and denied all allegations. Then her mom - the lady! - looked me in the eye and said, "Even if my daughter did say such things, what are you going to do about it? You wanna fight her? Beat me instead!!"

Unbelievable! Right in front of my mom, too! Who keeps in contact with friends like these?! My mom! My stupid, forgiving, soft-hearted mom!

Goddamn.

I believe that everything that, while you understand, may be true, it doesn't mean that everyone might have the same understanding and vision that you may have. For me I only really knew sonic from a game play perspective of him running, collecting rings and defeating robotnic. I know little about some of the other media formats and may have a comic book or two laying around somewhere back at home, but other than that my view is somewhat limited.

A great comparison is my remote control car racing. I tell people I race RC cars and they instantly ask petrol. Firstly the correct term is nitro, and no I race electric. Electric can be faster, cheaper and the technology we developed helped with new hobbies such as flying drones (brushless motors and radio equipment), yet people that look at drone racing won't make the comparison link back to RC cars.

I could go on for hours about how an RC car is designed, how we usebound and rebound in oil filled shocks wwith different spring tensions, how ride height can make the greatest of difference, and roll centers will affect how much a car bites into a corner. I know I'm one of the better differential gear builders in my club and while everyone is using 1500cst oil in a rough diff, I run a thicker oil in a smoother operational diff. The result is the same resistance through the oil, but a smoother adjustment in power.

And now we all know a little more about RC cars. Through education and exposure we've increased our knowledge. The same can be made for limited lore fan fiction. Someone may look at YuGiOh as a card game, while others as an anime. Each will have different ideas on expectations and unfortunately there will be sometimes, like myself, when I vew sonic and mlp as a blue hedgehog that collect rings and a pink unicorn that is used for memes and cosplays.

Sorry to hear about that. Sadly there are some students out there that will lie about things at a school just for fun and spite. I will say more fool the others for believing the child because things will eventually unwind and everyone will know the truth that the child is a liar.

You could take them to court over defamation of character or something, but then again I'm not sure what your laws are like in your country. :\

Hope all goes well.
