@VitaVitaARSo I have an idea for a Sergeant at arms sort of character who is a bit of a vet and can act as a intelligent extension of the captains will since she is kinda young from her bio. I.E. The order: take that hill. Becomes a series of a effective orders to the Knights with him. Resulting in the intended effect.

My other thought was some sort of foreign Knight to give him a little variance in equipment, combat style and cultural background.

I also have some other thoughts in terms of variations on just more generic Knights if neither of those sound appealing

I've been talking to someone about something similar to the first.

The second... um, sure? I don't see any problem with that setup.

Only because someone's been talking to me about a similar idea, and two people with basically the same character role is kind of not great for both of them. ^^;

@VitaVitaAR Opinions corrections or criticisms are welcomed. I tried to leave details vague where I could as opposed to specific since I don't know if you have an ideas about the world for where i set his background. If it totally doesn't fit the picture let me know and we can work to fix whatever issues he has.

Name: Valdoth Thorn (Native Name), Sir Garrett (Use Name)
Age: 26
Gender: Male
Race: Human
Appearance: Standing at an imposing 6’ 5” and weighing in at 220 pounds of hardened jovial muscle Garrett is clearly not of a civilized background.

Personality: Garrett is straightforward, blunt and honest as they come; which often gets him into trouble with nobility civilization. With a more or less easy nature the Barbarian sees little reason not to befriend those who live, love and fight honestly around him. Everything Garrett has was won with the might of his arm or the might of his mind. Despite the rumors about the intelligence of the hill barbarian tribe’s intelligence; Garrett is actually a rather smart individual although his upbringing shows in his lack of eloquent speech. While he is often seen as a headstrong and prideful individual Garrett is perfectly capable of deferring to those in positions of prestige above him or who he views as more knowledgeable or capable than he is. The exception to Garrett’s fairly easygoing nature is magic. As far as the Knight Barbarian is concerned magic is a cheat and a means for people to find power over those they shouldn’t, and as a result Garrett looks down on any form of magic.

On the Battlefield Garrett is not the kind of person who directs or plans; Garrett is a leader by action and can be found at the front line of a conflict taking the fight to the enemies of the Iron Rose Knights. With the ascension of the new Captain Garrett has yet to formulate an opinion of the politics centered around the sixteen year old taking command of the Knights. For Garrett, being able to serve with the Knights was a lifelong endeavour that finally came to fruition. For the Knight Barbarian the new Captain has every right to command the Knights as it is tradition, anyone who speaks ill of her or her ascension is met with stony glares from the huge knight.

Brief Backstory:

Raised in the hills of Velt in the tradition of the hill barbarians Garrett grew up Valdoth Thorn the second son of the Skildren line of elevated Barbarians. Six of the Barbarian clans took up the mantle of nobility on the point of their swords over a hundred years ago. After this rise the clans spit on tradition and continued to maintain a semi nomadic life style. Raising castles and townships throughout the hills beneath the Cahladren Mountain range the clans created a new type of society that produced children who were versed in the culture of the hills and plains with an edge of refinement that only society can give you.

Garrett grew up in one of the nomadic groups which traveled between three of his family's homes in the foothills of the Cahladren Mountains. From an early age he learned horsemanship, archery and the art of war from his father and his father's Barbarian Knights. On the advent of his eighteenth birthday Garrett was sent forth to seek his fortune with the Iron Rose Knights. Since the day of his birth Garrett was raised on a diet of stories about Thaln and the Iron Rose Knights. With a goal in mind the young Barbarian trained long and hard before he finally made his way from the foothills of the Cahladren Mountains in the land of Thaln where he petitioned to be a member of the Iron Rose Knights. A year later he was accepted as a Knight and for the next nine years he would serve with honor, loyalty and ferocity.

Equipment:

Mounted:

Disregarding the lance in favor of his clan's large heavy Khopesh, throwing spears and short horn bow Garrett is a force to be reckoned with on horse back.

On Foot:

Garrett favors a heavy hand and a half War Maul with can easily be wielded two handed or one handed as Garrett prefers to use it in conjunction with a large steel kite shield.

Garrett’s armor is an heirloom of his clan and was a gift on his eighteenth birthday. The armor is crafted in such a way that it allows for easy mounting and dismounting of his horse.

Mount:

A life long companion Garrett’s chestnut stallion, Gravel, in a heavy tough warhorse raised for stamina and power allowing it to wade into advancing infantry as well as maintain a steady pace over long distances. This breed of horse is a favorite of the hill tribes for its size and stamina.

Skills:
Archer: Garrett is an accomplished short ranged mounted archer.
Horsemanship: All but born in the saddle Garrett is an incredibly skilled rider
Heavy Weaponry: While he lacks the advanced sword play of his more civilized peers Garrett makes up for it in his use of devastating heavy weapons ranging from the Heavy cavalry Khopesh to vicious weighted battle axes.

I don't see any issues with this. I never really had there being hill people in Velt, but I also never said there wasn't, so... accepted!

So e have the magical knight, the foreign knight, I would like to try and play the straight-man knight. Fairly straightforward but just enough to make him stand out from an NPC.

  • Name:
    Gregory Gardener
  • Age:
    34
  • Gender:
    Male
  • Race:
    Human
  • Appearance:
  • Personality:
    Honest, Loyal and Brave. The paragon's of the ideal of any knight.
    Honesty to a fault, He's sometimes earned other's ire by not looking the other way.
    Loyalty to the oath and measure, he struggles to an ideal higher than himself.
    Bravery...within reason. He will stand fast and defend others in need of his aid. But he will not throw away his life against needless odds.
  • Brief Backstory:
    Fourth born Gardner of the rose nights. His great grandfather earned his lordship during a great siege against an enemy force. Whilst only truly a landskeeper, when they were trapped between the outer wall and the castle proper. It was his intimate knowledge of the hedgemazes that allowed the true knights to route around the invading forces and take them out, saving the castle.
    For this, he was not only knighted for actions worthy of a knight, but he was gifted with the enemy leaders weapon, a broken dwarven claymore. That was the start of the Gardener noble line of lordship.
    Gregory's grand-father Was the first to start an odd family history, some attributing to the sword itself being cursed. Just as the great-grandfather had been given half of a broken sword, so to did Gregory's grandfather fall when the blade he was using as a broadsword broke again, this time to a duelist who actually had a type of dagger called a 'sword breaker' before his brachia artery was opened and he fell.
    His father had taken the broken greatsword and reforged it into two short-swords, hoping to break the bad luck. One was lost in the last great battle, disarmed and trampled into the mud before he met a similar fate.
    Now gregory has only the blade he had made into an elegant knife. A century later and the blade had never tasted dwarven blood until the day Gregory was on patrol when he was attacked by bandits. He had planned to run, but when he turned his dagger plunged into the shortest of the thieves and whatever fell magic activated.
    The sword was indeed at one time a dwarven greatsword, an executioner's sword. All watched with horror as the blade drained out every drop of blood from the bearded bandit and left a dessicated husk with a thrumming blade and a gaping hole. The other bandits ran away in terror just as fast as Gregory did with the knife floating after him. Eventually he collapsed and was met with the 'ghost' of the blade.
    Delvar Deeps was a paladin to the stonegods who did his duty, decapitating over one hundred criminals with his blade, but when the blade took an innocent's life, it had broken and the victim son took the blade before running for his life, keeping the sword with him to defend himself on the surface. Eventually it passed hands time and again to Gregory great-grandfather and down the line of good knights who had done great services.
    The spirit of justice wanted to reward the Gargeners, but it hadn't the energy to do so having starved for so long without dwarven blood to fuel it. Now that it had 'feasted' on a wicked dwarf, it could make the pact with him in the name of justice. When the blade is drawn and the word spoken, a 'spiritual blade' will envelop the knife and allow him to strike with all the length and weight of a greatsword. He can only perform such a feat once a day and for only an hour a day in one duration.
  • Equipment:
    He prefer's splint-mail to full plate-mail, enjoying a modicum of agility over walking tanks.

    He carries his great-grandfather's sword broken down to a dagger on his hip with a square shield to protect others. He carries a heavy crossbow on his back.
  • Skills:

@VitaVitaAR

Name: Zande Khanda

•Age: 32

•Gender: Male

•Race: Human

•Height: 6'4"

•Weight: 195 pounds

•Appearance: Zande is a tall, lean man whose musculature is best likened to that of a starved jaguar. The dense, tube-like muscles adorning his long arms and legs allow him to exude a great air of physical prowess despite his wiry look. Unwashed dreadlocks hang over lurid, amber eyes whilst high cheekbones accentuate his abnormal jaw muscles, the feral aspect pushed even further by his sharpened teeth. He often wears the skulls of recent victims upon his belt and is not often seen without his rubber padded, steel clawed boots and black steel tribal mask. A skull and crossbones is sewn upon his cloak.

•Personality: He's mischievous, laid back, and never without alcohol or food. Though Zande lives to kill, he does enjoy life's other pleasures. He pulls pranks and hits on white women, seeking out fun whenever he isn't training. He takes very few things seriously, but among the things he does, loyalty and a cat phobia are at the top of the list. He's loyal to a fault, and considers an act of betrayal to be an ultimate insult. At the mere sight of a kitty, he'll wet himself and flee. This is because of an incident in his childhood, where he was almost eaten by a tiger.

•Brief Backstory: In the darkest depths of a savage jungle wilderness, shrouded in dread Congo secrets beneath a sky of eternal blackness, there existed a tribe of maneaters. One would think that there would be no bottom amidst the depths of their depravity. Yet, a young boy native to this landscape of monsters found it. The word "bloodthirsty" is often thrown about. However, no other description of Zande holds so true. He was exiled from his village for exceptional reasons and became a freelance mercenary and bandit leader, feared across the land. He lived a cannibal and a headhunter, who seeks to further his reputation by collecting the skulls of formidable opponents.
Before too long, he grew tired of playing the bad guy and changed professions. He joined with the Blades of Iron Roses to fight the good fight, leaving his dark past behind. He still keeps skulls though. Some habits die hard.

•Equipment: Two three kilo bearded sparth axes with snap button sheathes for fast access, weighted serrated knife with ten inch blade, blowgun and darts with inland taipan venom, teeny little leather pouches of spitting cobra venom, rubber soled boots with three eight inch steel claws on each foot, steel chestplate and spiked pauldrons, steel shinguards, chainmail underclothing, a trained pet vulture acting as a spotter, black steel mask, fingerless iron gauntlets inlaid with rat skulls.

(The axe "Jancro", slang for Vulture in Jamaican)

(The axe "Hot Steppa", slang for Free Criminal)

•Skills: Zande's untamed strength is far greater than his appearance would suggest, albeit reasonably less than that of a formidable professional weightlifter. He can wrestle and subdue wild beasts with just his bare hands and overpower some larger opponents through pure wiry tenacity. These traits greatly pale in comparison to his incredible biting and striking power. Each of his axe blows has a huge wind-up, making him highly predictable but difficult to escape due to his great skill in tricking and trapping opponents. He can and has killed men with a single well-aimed punch, and never neglects to train his jaws by chewing through blocks of wood and chunks of rubber, being capable of chomping clean through an unhusked coconut with a single bite. Equally impressive is Zande's great speed and agility, which his lean body is practically built for. He can scurry up and down trees in the blink of an eye and move with a silent swiftness that puts to shame his native brethren.

@Themerlinhawk: I don't have a map, mostly because convincing landmasses are really hard to draw. ^^;

@Doc Doctor: One big question is how he got to Thaln, since it's basically in your "fantasy Europe" region. Other then that, given his history, there'd probably need to be a LOT of work done for him to get into a former holy order, since he was a mercenary with a reputation for bloodthirstiness and cannibalism and all. ^^;

I mean, I'm not saying it's completely impossible but it'd be much harder for him to join then, say, a Knight Errant or something and there's no real note of it in his backstory.
