December 24, 2287.

The Brotherhood of Steel, in their infinite wisdom and with the aid of the Sole Survivor, have destroyed the Institute. From there, they began a campaign of eradication, hunting down Synths, Ghouls (feral or not) and Super Mutants alike as well as those who would hide of protect them. The Minutemen were on the verge of defeat, the Railroad on the brink of destruction... Until December 24th, 2287, exactly 62 days since the Sole Survivor first woke from cryogenic slumber. The day that the shelf life of fusion cores expired.

Power Armour stopped functioning, Gatling Lasers no longer had ammunition and vertibirds had no more power source. Even the vehicles abandoned on the side of the road would no longer detonate, as their own fusion power sources depleted. The Brotherhood of Steel was crippled. Banding together, the Minutemen, Railroad and (to the displeasure of all parties) remnants of the Institute pooled their resources together to drive the Brotherhood out of the Commonwealth. The Sole Survivor, considered an unbeatable Sentinel, fell in battle while Elder Maxson was forced to sound an aerial retreat, fleeing aboard the Prydwen as the Commonwealth celebrated. But the celebrations were short lived.

Remnants of the Institute were quick to point out that they had long since taken to manufacturing their own Fusion Cores, having foreseen this eventuality long ago, considering it their ace-in-the-hole to be the only faction with functioning, fusion-powered technology, but with the Institute destroyed it was almost certain that Brotherhood Scribes would be pouring over any and all retrieved Institute data in an effort to create their own Fusion Cores, at which point the Brotherhood would be unstoppable and their anti-human genocide would be complete. There was only one option; To build their own fusion cores first. For years the Institute had been launching satellites into orbit, monitoring radiation levels, weather changes and other activity and one thing had appeared on their radar just days before their defeat.

Lights. Lots of them, accompanied by high energy readings suggesting fusion power. But not the gradually depleting fusion power they were used to seeing, newly manufactured fusion power, likely from newly constructed cores and reactors, coming from coastal China. A small party is being put together with the intention of travelling to the continent by sea in the hopes of recovering any information that could give them an edge in the coming Core War.

What to Expect:

- Mutated sea life.

- Mutated Chinese fauna such as the Golden snub-nosed monkey, mutated wolverines, etc.

- Mutated Chinese flora.

- Chinese Ghouls (Called "E gui").

Color me interested. I'd love to represent the railroaders as one of their heavies. Since this will peak the epic arc, will we have access to more advanced (uniwue) equiment from the start?

@knighthawk Yeah, I'd say it's a fair assumption that people raided the ever-loving hell out of the ruins of the Institute and whatever the Brotherhood left behind.

So should we be planning around no access to any fusion tech? Effectively raiding for cores and rounds?

@knighthawk Yeah, there's no usable Power Armour and anything requiring a Fusion Core for power or ammo won't work. Fusion Cells are still available and New Vegas established that Cells can be recycled, but they won't deal as much damage or hold as much ammunition. Plasma weaponry and Gauss rifles will still work but most people will be using ballistic weapons.

I'll be interested. I was wondering if it would be okay if I did play a vault dweller who uses energy weapons. May e she'll be one of the few intellectuals fighting the scientific front of the Core War.

I was thinking her side arm was at least going to be the recharger pistol from New Vegas, and maybe some other gizmos as well. It's still a wip.

That's... actually a damn good idea.

@Hjalti
Questions on overlapping with the sole survivors actions. Basically I wanted to see about getting the upgraded silver shroud costume with railroad upgrade and the spray & pray.

Ayy, interest piqued.

I've got a potential charismatic Vault 81 resident ready in my character vault, and an idea for a Mexican stealth demolitionist.

@knighthawk Yeah, we can say that the Sole Survivor never completed that quest or bought that gun. Instead of completing side quests they only completed main story missions because they were desperate to find Shaun, so they only encountered people like Piper, Preston and Danse but not Cait or Strong. Plus they definitely wouldn't have done Railroad missions, so your character could have completed the Silver Shroud missions instead.

So you're saying fusion cores just all died out? What about the other kinds of fusion batteries?

@Marshall Fusion cells still work since New Vegas established they could be recycled but there's been no established way that I can recall where Fusion Cores can be recharged or built in a post-war setting. What other kinds of fusion batteries were you thinking of?

Rough draft.

As a railroader

(atom cat/ greaser Jacket and jeans)

As the silver shroud

He wears welders goggles to cover his eyes and the scarf around his mouth to hide his face.

Bruce Clark Was an unlucky kid, he was born into the wrong era. In a place where survival is the daily chore, being a 90 pound weakling simply isn't an option. So he has to be smarter than stronger.

The son of a caravan trader, their usual triangular route being between Diamond city to goodneighbor then bunker hill before heading back to diamond city, Bruce spent most of the time riding on top of the family Brahma and watching out for bandits. He would catch and throw baseballs with his dad to at least develop his hand-eye coordination if not his physical might with he bat itself. During the down time, he would take the time to clean up whatever they were trading to increase the value. This is where he started to shine as brightly as their junk.

He went from simply cleaning things, to discovering how they worked. As long as he did not break it, he was allowed to fiddle and experiment with the junk they would find. Since this is the wasteland, guns were a constant fact of life so learning how to keep the weapons clean was an utter necessity. As it is, when they would come across a modified gun, he'd learn how everything would interconnect and strip interesting guns back to basic models for selling while keeping the interesting parts to make their guns better to protect them.

Fortune favored them one day when they came upon the remains of a struggle between raiders and some gunners. More than the guns or armor, a stockpile of explosives was the biggest win in Bruce's mind as he always saw their effectiveness but never their construction. It took some figuring out, but now he knew how to make rudimentary protection for their camps with a perimeter of lunchboxes.

Sadly, a life of a caravan worker is not only fraught with danger, but its a really boring origin story. So
when the raiders sniper round pierced his dads skull, he was shocked to see the circuits flying out the back. For the last eight years, as far back as his 5th birthday, he'd been raised by a synth!

He grabbed what he could and ran, leaving his dead dad in the street for the raiders to pillage. When he got to bunker hill to explain what happened, he got pulled to the side and made to explain again to someone who knew his dad. They offered him a place to stay and earn his keep. They welcomed him to the railroad.

For the next three years he learned the crafts, getting an education to develop what he was already familiar with. He was taught how to scrap junk into its components more effectively, he learned how to not just reverse engineer the modification from guns, but to innovate his own. He even learned how to build a better bomb. Life was not all work however, as he found a hobby in not just collecting half destroyed comic books, but splicing them together to make whole comics from four or five of the same issue. Reading the comics inspired him as much as they took him away from the wasteland for a few minutes a day. He became a huge fan of 'the silver shroud' out of all the unstoppable's and would listen to the silver shroud station anytime he was near goodneighbor.

Finally fate would look to him as he made his usual delivery of Kill or be killed when he was asked to take something over to the memory den, it was there that he finally met Kent Conolloy. The two got talking and even though bruce was nowhere nearly as old as Kent, their shared interest got them along quite well. After another set of visits, Kent opened up to Bruce enough to ask him to travel to the old Hubris Comics where their hero was made. Perhaps there was some vintage memorabilia in a safe like a full set of original print comics!

It was right about then that Bruce felt like an actual hero, defeating his first supervillain. That feeling got dashed with the arrival of the zeppelin with the brotherhood of steel. Dashed but undaunted, Bruce got on the radio and declared that “The Silver Shroud protects all innocents, including Synths seeking freedom with the railroad.”

That may not have been the wisest of decisions as the next events unfolded with the institute.
