While this is a fandom rp, no prior knowledge of setting, characters, etc is expected or even particularly desired. I don't give a damn whether you've never heard of it or you're a diehard fan. I'll take anyone, within reason. However, without further delay, Jace Beleren presents:

Ravnica

A Magic: The Gathering Fandom Roleplay

Welcome to Ravnica. Can you imagine an entire planet, covered in a single city? Probably not. The scale is unimaginable. But that is Ravnica. Where only at the top of the tallest towers can you watch the sun set, because the skyline is blocked by the stonework of the buildings surrounding you. Where no government is powerful enough to control even one city, because there is only one. Where magic is the tool of battle.

The Setting

As I described more poetically in the intro, Ravnica is a city that covers an entire planet. It is inhabited by ten guilds that fought each other almost to their own complete destruction. It was then that the Guildpact was signed, an agreement between the ten (though House Dimir never actually agreed) to cease the fighting, and to have each guild specialise in two of the five colours of magic. Each would take a role in the city, and by doing so contribute to its stability. 9999 years and most of the ten-thousandth later, tensions are rising once more. The guilds are gathering their resources and readying for a new age of warfare. Only the truly gullible still believe that a re-signing will take place at the anniversery. Most expect a revolution.

I'm definitely for this if I end up with the time. I have to side with my main men of Gruul. Red and Green is Life.

I see you Raijin.

@Gemini Token I first started only a few years ago. Return to Ravnica was my first block, so it's kinda close to my heart.
@Kronshi Blue-black is my preference. Dimir is life.

@Ryougu I wasn't planning on using MTG mechanics since I was expecting to have a number of people who have not played the game before. Since combat is possible, I was planning to have it done in a method similar to the arena sub-forum. However, it is possible to play out actual games of Magic on this forum, using the dice rolling system. The two main problems are that a) It makes things less friendly to people without experience to the game and b) It's really abusable, since you could theoretically make a deck out of some lands and a bunch of mythic rares.

Since games of Magic are meant to represent battles betweens wizards anyway, I figured it would be more like having both characters "charge up". That is, they can use 1-mana spells in the first post of the battle, 2-mana spells in the second and so forth. The reason mages aren't constantly "charging", from a lore perspective, is the mana burn mechanic that used to be in Magic. Basically charging themselves without using it will cause serious injuries or death, in large amounts. The spells themselves will be described by the player, prefereably based on actual cards. For example, [character1] flicks his hand and sends a small bolt of lightning at [character2], based on the spell "Shock". This will also help give context to what how much a given character will be able to take before death. I plan for PCs to be using the standard life 20, but particularly weak or powerful NPCs may have more or less.

I'm interested. I feel like the Selesnya faction would fit the charrie I have in mind perfectly. Curious question, but can my charrie have a weapon aside from her magic abilities? Also, I presume we would RP our charries actually USING a spell or SUMMONING a creature rather than using a card for it, yeah?

Unless all of us are basically Cana Alberona lol.

@Mistiel Characters can have weapons other than their magic, but the actual effectiveness would be questionable. And you are right, characters are actually casting spell and summoning creatures. The cards are just suggestions for what those spells and creatures might be.

YO I GOTTA GET IN ON THIS.

Ahem... Room for one more?

Also, will our character be building a library of spells for usage, or is it an ad-libbed sort of thing?

@PrivateVentures So we got 6 people already... about 1/4 of people actually follow up on stating their interest... so that's one and a half people. Yeah there's room for one more.

It will be ad-libbed, but limited by what colour(s) your character uses and how much mana they have access to. Also I will ask their general preferences for spells and creatures in the character sheet, but these will not be limits, just what the character generally uses.

I'm just going to point out that legendary creatures and planeswalkers will not be allowed to be summoned in this game. This is because there is a good chance they will become actual characters in the roleplay.

In other news, both the guild section and the character sheet section have been completed. I plan to work on a "rules" section (shouldn't take long, nothing abnormal) and a summary of what's been talked about here as to how magic combat will work, in case anyone should join after this date. Once both are done, I'll get the OOC up.

@JaceBeleren

If there is still space I would like to extend my hand because I wish to perform an Epic Experiment.

Izzet colors have always resonated with me and so have the mechanics of the Izzet such as the random effects and the whole concept of Overload being cool to me (I cast this spell after tapping into large reserves of mana for something quite explosive to occur). All in all I would like to pledge allegiance to the Firemind and this RP if I can.

@1Charak2 There is still space. I was planning on going for ten, since there are ten guilds, but I don't want to limit anyone if two people want to be from the same guild. I suppose that's not an issue yet, since the only people who have even suggested a preference have gone for Gruul, Selesnya (and now) Izzet, so we'll just wait and see I guess. So yeah, 2 spots left if anyone wants them.

@JaceBeleren

So is there a limit on spells that we can use on this plane? Such as not being able to use Phyrexian spells like Gitaxan probe or Forbidden Magic Ala Obliterate.

@1Charak2
There is no limit (in terms of set) for types of magic, since the cards are balancing methods rather than the spells themselves, to ensure that no crazy pyromancer casts Explosive Impact (5 damage to target creature or player) on turn one, for example. I wasn't around for Phyrexia, was that the one where you could lose life to pay mana costs? If that's correct, you could roleplay it as a kind of blood magic - slicing yourself across the palm or whatever. This could cause people to be more than a little creeped out by you, especially in public, so it wpuld probably be good for roleplaying. As for particularly powerful spells, PM if you are not sure about the fairness of the card, before you post. It will probably be okay, but if, for example, you have an NPC important to the roleplay on your side and your opponent casts Hero's Downfall (Destroy target creature or planeswalker) I will almost certainly intervene. In general, avoid using "Destroy", "Remove from game" or "Exile" spells on story-important targets, unless they're temporary.
