Let's try something a little different, yeah?

Welcome to 1968, an intoxicating land where creativity for creativity's sake can take priority and enable you to render stories and events you could only have dreamed of in all of your previous mundanity. In this universe, the mainstream continuities of DC or Marvel no longer apply; this is a world wholly built upon the ideas of players. Continuity that exists in this role-play is anything on the linked wiki in the information section and in the story above. We welcome you to a unique narrative opportunity to take any DC, Marvel, IDW, Image, or Dark Horse Comics character and re-imagine them in a way that makes them pleasurable for you to write unique and original stories with.

Whether you're one for emotional drama or a sucker for physical trauma, the vast range of characters available could fit any genre or any purpose you could reasonably imagine. Have a burning desire to write The Question as a hard-nosed police detective serving a hierarchy he doesn't care for? Maybe you have a unique take on The Whizzer you wish to explore. A concept in which Slade Wilson, not a mercenary but a successful military man, struggles to become President? The opportunities are endless. As long as they have appeared in a canonical DC/Marvel/Indie tale on either the page or the screen they're free for refurbishment: here, the universe is yours to mold.

As a sandbox themed collaborative story, the keys to the universe are given to you—the player—but not without limitations or guidance. Unlike that of a linear progression-themed collaborative story, the goal of a sandbox is to allow you to craft character arcs, NPC casts, and almost assistant GM decisions that don’t contradict the other rules. The style of role-play was explained to me as an “interactive multi-author fanfiction” and the idea of this sort of concurrent thing is apt. However interaction, much like any role-play, is the bread and butter of the game; we don’t shy away from interactions, world-scale gatherings, and so forth. Our job in this role-play will be to set up events every so often but for the most part the GM Staff will do the same thing as the players in setting up our stories.

With all of that said, there is one hook and spin: this RP begins during the year of 1968, though players can choose to write a story from any year preceding it. Also, unlike previous incarnations where I took the helm with the lore; the lore is player-decided. The world is what the players make it, not some overly authoritative GM as I have been in the past. This game is public, invite-open to all.

The Guild of Assassins: A synthesis of Marvel’s Assassin’s Guild and DC’s League of Assassins, our continuity develops this secret society into pretty much what you expect. Rumored to rival the League of Shadows, the best assassins in the world are groomed for the top buyer and their own agenda; led by an obscure figure only known as The Sensei.

The Hand: An international secret society.

The Kingpin Syndicate: A criminal syndicate that is native to New York City, not much is known about the leadership or the hierarchy.

Lantern Corps: The stalwart guardians of interstellar space, The Lantern Corps have been the mediators and guardians for the galaxy for thousands of cycles. At the center of their power lies the ancient species tied into the emotional spectrum. Unlike the Nova Corps or the Darkstar Alliance who serve planetary interests, the Lanterns are not political or national—gathering their sense of law and order from beyond political interests and within moral beliefs. The Lantern Corps is comprised of four colors: green (will), blue (hope), violet (love), and indigo (compassion).

The League of Shadows: The League of Shadows is the Illuminati resurfaced and led by Ra’s al Ghul—“the Demon’s Head”, who believes through chaos the world can be reborn. The league is a secret society bent on world order through predetermined chaos, making them the antithesis to many and is one of the reasons former member Bruce Wayne left the society as he did not agree with their supposed vicious methods and philosophy.

The Society: Headed by Vandal Savage, this secret society of likeminded criminals and megalomaniacs are probably the most obscure and dangerous threat to superheroes worldwide yet.

Nova Corps: The special forces of Xandar, the Nova Corps exist to protect the interests of Xandar and its allies. Slightly comparable to the Lantern Corps, the Nova Corps travel with goals of peacekeeping and relief forces to other worlds.

The Purifiers: A group of anti-metahuman extremists rooted in fundamentalism. Some say The Purifiers are little more than far right picketers whilst others say they promote domestic terrorism in their crusade against people they deem as “mutants”.

SHIELD: Government agency originally made as a special counter-terrorism branch to combat the resurgence of HYDRA.

STAR Labs: Founded and led by Doctor Emil Hamilton, a brilliant multi-faceted scientist with expertise in genetics and engineering, STAR Labs is a scientific thinktank that has several connections with the United States government and other interest groups.

“Advanced roleplaying should focus on developing interesting and complex characters that become part of plot-lines which catch the imagination and inspire the writer behind them to exercise creativity. It is mature, humorous, imaginative, tragic, terrifying, passionate, and rife with descriptive language and characters with real personality and relatable cares. Quality posting is far better than needless novels, yet one should never neglect detail when one feels the need. However, while word and paragraph requirements ought to be unnecessary, single paragraphs cannot contain enough detail to suffice.”

Generally, the idea here is a simplified version of any sort of rules since we are “veteran” members of RPG and we pretty much know the big rules; follow the host site’s rules, communicate, collaborate, and don’t be antagonistic towards others. CS reviews aren’t going to be very strict, but to have a reference sheet is important——it doesn’t have to be extremely detailed; you could use bullet points to sum it up or just use brevity to get to the bulk of posting and telling the stories you want to tell. Legacy rules still apply for the most part, but if a parent character is absent just communicate what you want to do and let’s work together to make it happen.

Below are a set few rules guidelines to play by:

  • You may choose any character appearing in the continuities that envelope certain frames of western comic books, though the core of the game is DC/Marvel. You can include aspects of the Bruce Timm continuity, Wildstorm, the Cinematic Universe(s), and so forth. Characters from Dark Horse, Image, IDW, and Archie are acceptable.

  • Travel involving time, dimensional multiverses, or any other concepts would be on a GM-approved basis.

  • Please do not kill player-created characters or important NPC’s unless given the go-ahead to do so or are within your right to.

  • Do not impose on arcs without asking for permission; don’t jump into a scene for the sake of interaction; your characters should have sufficient reasoning to want to be in a cooperative scene and noting that— do be courteous and respectful about approaching or possibly interfering in character arcs. While this is more a suggestion then a rule, we should be courteous to those who are planning arcs. Communication is the key.

  • Respect the GM staff and their authority.

  • Be creative.

  • Notes are an optional and malleable part of your CS’s – just because someone has plans for Harvey Dent as the Batman player does not mean I can’t retrofit those plans to accommodate your interest in playing that character or characters related to them. Notes should be used as guides and pre-cautionary plans or pre-established lore points and do not mean to rule the role-play by disallowing concepts. Again, communicate.

  • Legacies (NPCs, sidekicks, rogues) fall under the jurisdiction of the hero they are traditionally designed around. If you want to play The Joker, The Batman player has to be okay with it and your information should never contradict what they have written in their CS. This one is malleable, but again— communicate.

  • No post should be made that contradicts the host website's rules, so keep those in mind.

  • Activity will be left vague as social obligations such as employment, academics, and so forth take precedent over a shared hobby. But we should at least have a post for every fifteen to thirty days. Obligations will be reminded by the staff, but this is a low stress endeavor so we shouldn't feel the need to make extreme demands regarding this.

The following will allow you to apply for a character in 1968. Be sure to fix HR tags by removing the space in their coding. All applications should be posted in the OOC.

How many references are needed for our writing? If the answer is 'eight' you can go ahead and boot Briza from the game.

I'm working on a sheet for Midnighter of WildStorm comics and later DC and I noticed that links for the 'Concepts', 'Notes' and 'References' headers in the sheet skeleton currently don't work. However, if you add http:// to the start of the links, they do.

Maybe just using the raw code for the example would be a better method for making a CS?

Ah, it probably doesn't matter, I'm sure people will work it out.

What's your stance on reservations? Because I was thinking I might snap up Peter Parker as well, if we're allowed multiple characters?

Major WIP, but putting it here while I finish it up.

C A P T A I N A M E R I C A
Steven Rogers, 25 (b. 1920)
Agent of SHIELD based Internationally
Active since approximately Winter 1941

Basically, I want to play a Steve Rogers who wakes up just in time to find that his old enemies in the form of HYDRA have resurfaced as well. I'd like to get him involved in the newly formed SHIELD and explore how he interacts and adapts to the changes of the 20-plus years since he went on ice. I want to really look at how his experiences would effect him without losing the overall optimism, courage and commitment to a set of values that make the character great, especially in the interesting mix of cynicism and hope that was the late 60's. Of course I also want to use the international threat of HYDRA to hopefully have interactions that span the breadth of the RP and really help in a collaborative world-building process.

Basically I want to take the goofy, cheery idealized cartoon themesong version of Captain America shown below and explore the realities experienced by Steve during the era the show was created while keeping him true to himself.

I think I’ll let people start out with two concept applications at launch (as it’d be fair considering my own applications). No reservations/“dibs” however, so if someone applies for the same character within 24 hours the applications will be judged on who has the stronger concepts.

Jonah Hex
Major Jonah Hex (Ret.), Bounty Hunter/Suspected Vigilante, 30 (b. 1938)
Vigilante based in California
Active since approximately Late Spring, 1968

Jonah Amos Hex is a USMC Major who was caught in an explosion in January 1968 while surveying a battle scene in Vietnam. The explosion killed four other marines but Jonah survived, all ligaments and senses perfectly intact. The right side of his face however was horribly disfigured. He received a medical discharge and a medal upon returning to the states. After finally being released from the hospital in March, 1968. Jonah was incredibly bitter at...well, everyone. Vietnam. The Viet Cong. The Vietnamese. The United States. That one asshole just walking down the street. You name it, Jonah hated it. He despised the bizarre the looks he would get from people as he passed, so much so that he knocked a guy out for bringing it up.

After a disappointing search for no work, Jonah was walking the streets of downtown LA when he was approached by a desperate man who begged him to help. Gang members had taken his son because the man refused to pay their extortion fee. Even if Jonah was definitely the most bitter son of a bitch on planet earth, he wasn't heartless. Jonah agreed to help and followed the man to the gang hideout. What started out to be a reasonable negotiation turned into an all out fight and when a gun was pulled, it got bloody. But during the crack of ribs and the occasional gunshot, Jonah realized he hadn't felt this good since the explosion. He loved to fight, that's why he joined the Corp. And as he wrestled a pistol away from a gang member and turned it on him, Jonah considered that maybe there was a purpose in life after all. He smiled as the gangster's head exploded from a point blank shot. Killing bad guys.

Never mind the fact that most people would consider that as crazy and he now had a temper that was like a stick of dynamite next to an open flame, this felt good. Really good. The man had no money to thank him for rescuing his son. Jonah didn't care. He'd found a purpose he hadn't had for months. So he took contracts for the government to capture crooks for whatever and bring them back alive. But by night (and on his days off) he slaughtered anyone who he deemed to be hurting people. He acted as Judge, Jury, and Executioner...and he loved it.

Equipment:

- Jonah's Bounty Hunter Outfit: Looks like a typical cowboy, with subtly armored jacket and vest underneath shirt.

- Two Colt 1911 Pistols.

- Bowie Knife and K-Bar Combat Knife.

- Scoped Springfield Rifle.

- Harley-Davidson Motorcycle

Lightning cracked across the night sky. Rain fell from the clouds like a thousand mortars on a battlefield. A lone rider sped down a desert highway, his duster billowing in the downpour. Water smashed against his hat, dripping off the brim and smacking the black pavement. The rider gripped the throttle and ripped back, flying down the highway. He had spotted his target. A club, with a dozen motorcycles outside of it. It was built low with a rustic look to it, but looks are deceiving. The rider pulled into the lot, parking a small ways from the rest of the motorcycles. He shut off the engine and patted himself down, everything in its place. He touched the rifle in its sling which hung from the back of the bike. For luck. The rider dismounted the motorcycle and sauntered up to the entrance, surveying the burly white man standing guard. The lightning illuminated him, greasy long brown hair and an unruly beard. A swastika on his arm. At least he had the right place.

But the rider wasn't here for him, he was here for someone in particular. Everything would be fine if the man would just let the rider in. But as he approached, a strong arm gripped his bicep to stop him and a stern order came. "Tattoo." The rider rolled his eyes, wrapping his right hand around the hilt of his Bowie knife and said in a rasping voice with a hint of southern twang "What? You don't do walk-ins?" he asked, looking at the man. The rider almost had to resist grinning as the lightning illuminated his own face, revealing his scarred right side. Ghoulish, some might say. The bouncer recoiled, loosening his grip. The rider swung the Bowie with strength, speed, and accuracy. The knife pierced the bruiser's throat and the rider drove it through, blood flowing over his fingers, his eyes locked onto the bruiser's and the big man slowly slunk to the ground as the rider ripped the knife out. Crimson liquid poured from the Aryan's throat and he slumped to the ground with a soft thump.

The rider holstered his knife and pulled out twin pistols, flipping off the safety of each. He figured if the bouncer wouldn't let him in, none of the others would either. The rider holstered one and hid the other in his coat. He opened the door and felt the warmth of a heater and the smell of beer. Music flooded his ears as he closed the door. Every head in the bar turned towards him. A dozen burly Nazi bikers. "I'm only gonna ask this once!" declared the rider "Where is Ned Schneider?". There was a low growl from the men and the one nearest to him, a rough looking redhead said "None of your damn business, cowboy. How did you get past Os-" he was cut off by a bullet entering his mount and blowing the back of his head out. The rider didn't play games, he was on a schedule and didn't have time to play tough with some skinheads.

He ripped out his second pistol and blasted the barkeep, who had reached for a shotgun. Glasses fell from the wall as the barkeeper slammed into it and dropped to the floor. The bikers stood up and three of them charged with bats and knives. Well no one said they were smart. The rider's bullets ripped through the three men like a knife through butter. They crashed into bar tables and tumbled to the ground like dominoes. The remaining eight bikers looked at him dumbfounded, the rider had just dropped four of their men like it was nothing. They exchanged glances and reached an agreement. The rider saw it and another four of them charged as the other four retreated into the backrooms. They split off and were much faster than their fellows. One went for the shotgun under the bar, the other three were bearing down upon the rider. His pistols went two different directions, the left one blasting the biker at the bar, sending him stumbling to the floor. The one on the right put a bullet in another biker's face.

The four were down to two and as the remaining two looked down at their friend, who was currently missing an eye and very dead, they started to back up. The rider pulled the trigger twice, pumping two in one of the biker's chest, that same biker falling backwards and landing with a flat thud. Then there was one. An amused look came over the rider's face as he started to beg, a swastika tattooed on the bald man's neck. "Please, please don't kill m-" the rider shoved his colt into the man's mouth, all amusement from his face gone. "You lynch a black man not ten miles from here and you beg mercy of me? He cackled without humor. "I'm gonna take this gun out of your mouth, and when I do, you're gonna tell me where Ned Schneider is or I'll fucking castrate you. Understand?" The Aryan nodded. The rider took the gun out of his mouth and the bald man stammered out. "He was with the group that left out the back." Sure enough, he heard bikes erupt to life and screech away. The rider groaned and turned to leave but was stopped when the bald man asked "W-Wait, who the fuck are you?"

The rider paused and slowly turned around, considering the man. "What do you care? You're dead anyway." With that, he rapid fired his right pistol, three rounds right through the bald man's skull. The man's head flung backwards and painted the floor with blood and the rider pushed the door open, jogging to his bike. The hunt wasn't over yet.

@Gowi (I advise you listen to Jonah's theme as you read this taster of my skill.)

Agent Graves
Phillip Graves, 58 (b. 1910)

Active since approximately 1945

Concept

Essentially, I'm doing a 60's version of 100 Bullets. The early structure is, to wit "Graves approaching someone who has been a victim of a terrible wrong. Graves gives them the opportunity to take revenge by providing a handgun, 100 bullets, and documentation about the primary target responsible for their woes. He informs the candidate the bullets are completely untraceable by any law enforcement investigation, and as soon as they are found at any crime scene, investigations will immediately cease." Graves will serve as a catalyst, supporting character, and maybe even an atagonist to characters and stories that are loosely connected. Interwoven through Graves and these characters are a story of a secret society that lies at the heart of America, a country that is under duress from the tumult of the late 60's. It is crime, it is politics, it is espionage and intrigue, it is history, and it is all blended together to make something very much me.

Z A T A N N A

Zatanna Zatara, 29 (b. 1939)
Vigilante based in Gotham City, New Jersey
Active since approximately Two Weeks Ago

Well I figured it was about time I want back to my roots with spooky scary skeletons and the mystical. The sixties present a fabulous time to do it, swinging out of the repression under McCarthyism people started to look towards the weird again: Nancy Reagan consulted an astrologer to help plan her husband’s presidential schedule; Pat Robertson suggested feminism was a plot to make women take up witchcraft; Rick Santorum identified “the father of lies, Satan,” as America’s Number One enemy, or in other words the strange and the odd was getting more mainstream attention than it had ever had previously. The fascination with the occult that would peak in the eighties started here and I figure why not spice that up a little bit with actual devil worshipers and the like.

Giovanni Zatara, famed magician and World War II era superhero is gone. Not the gone as in went away sense of the word but really gone - seemingly wiped from existence and memory. The only person that seems to remember him is his daughter Zatanna Zatara. There was a time when Giovanni was training his daughter to take up his mantle as the next great Zatara crime fighter to continue a legacy stretching backwards towards antiquity to keep the forces of the beyond at bay. That time was long ago and seemingly a distant memory; after Zatanna had found out that Giovanni had been altering her memory since childhood in a way of 'protecting' her from experiencing too much trauma at a young age she stormed out. In the ten years that had followed Zatanna had all but given up on the very idea of magic and the arcane moving to Gotham where she would become a moderately successful costume designer. That all changed when a mysterious book was left on her doorstep, a book which would end up being her father's journal. Now trying to find him she has to deal with a whole different world of problems as it turns out things are starting to get loose from the Source Wall.

So in short it's Lovecraft but not the water-downed Lovecraft that most people are used to. It's the real Lovecraft filled with all the racism, sexism and horror that was involved. Yet at the same time it's a story about a woman's relationship with her estranged father, and also it's a story about legacy characters those that have to take up the mantle from those before them and how they deal with the expectations. The story will be split between the present, flashbacks to Zatanna's youth, and the occasional journal entry from Giovanni. (I've actually written out a solid plot outline this time aren't you folks proud?) It might be a little dark, and it might be a little strange and I'm going to have too much fun pulling all the weird things from the world of comic books, but hey the devil's in the details right?

To be added. Maybe eventually. Probably.
