Fisticuffs My hypocrisy knows no bounds

So, I've got no idea how to make an interest check for a tabletop. Plus, I've got no idea what I want to do yet. What I do know is that I just made a Roll20 account, and I intend to use it.

Shadowrun might be pretty gnarly. But there's other shit, like DnD, and I've heard Pathfinder is cool, too.

Or, if any Warhammer fans want to help me get my feet in the water, that'd be dope. No idea where to start there.

But, I figured we could work that all out together, eh? If it isn't abundantly clear, I've never done tabletop before. I've got a fair bit of experience in more traditional writing and rp, so it shouldn't be too much of a leap, right?

Right?

Pathfinder's probably your best bet if you want something straightforward and encompassing with tons of mods and pre-made campaigns. I find the new editions of DnD way too limiting for character creation and I dunno how you'd do wargaming like Warhammer on a forum.

Hell if I know how Warhammer works, but if you say it won't work, I'll take your word for it.

Pathfinder, eh? Noted. Thanks for the info, friend!

@Fisticuffs No probs! Warhammer as I know it is a game where you move armies of really expensive miniatures around a board using a tape measure, and positioning and terrain and that sort of thing makes a huge strategic difference so doing it through text would be...pretty bad at best.

I'm probably biased but Pathfinder rules can be modified to any sort of universe you want, making it really useful for forum dice games. Then all the resources and campaigns can be stitched together to help build your world and run it. Definitely got some reading ahead of you if you want to run a game though.

@Fisticuffs If you're intending to try out Roll20, you can always ask me for help with anything. I'm busy with other RPs here and there so I might not always be able to help, but I do have 12,105 hours on Roll20 (as of writing this). I could probably answer a few things for you, which I'll do now.

  • Tabletop RP isn't much different than freeform RP, which is what many RPs consist of on this website. While you still create a sheet that defines your character, your rolls using the data from your sheet determine the outcomes of your actions. You may want your character to chop that big orc in half, but instead of you deciding the result, the roll tells you how lucky you are in your attack.
  • For introductory systems, I'd suggest sticking to DnD or Pathfinder first to get the jist of what tabletop roleplaying is. I consider DnD a good system to start from, and I've heard that Pathfinder is just a simpler version of DnD. Through, if you'd like to get your feet wet without any introduction or background, my personal favorite systems are Exalted and Song of Swords/Ballad of the Laser Whales.

@Tancuras You're forgetting that there's also several 40K RPGs that let you play a character in the 40K universe. Dark Crusade, Only War, Rogue Trader, etc. I'm not sure if Fantasy has any RPG books, but I can tell you that you're correct that Pathfinder -and- DnD can be modified to any universe or setting. I know they have official lore, but what's a tabletop campaign without using homebrews and your own creative imagination?

I noticed a previous comment said new versions of D&D are limiting. Although this is true to an extent, I would suggest starting with D&D 5e. This is the most recent version of D&D. It is an excellent system to get one's feet wet into Tabletop.

Pathfinder is great for customization, but with that variety comes a ton of complicated rules. Be prepared to bring a calculator to the table to figure everything out (Roll20 helps with that). It takes me a solid week to create a Pathfinder character due to the literally thousands of options.

By contrast I can create a 5e character in a matter of a couple hours. The biggest trick is finding a DM who is willing to work with you. 5e is not an extremely deep system, but that also means rules are often much simpler. In my opinion, it's a worthy trade. I suggest starting in 5e, and if you find yourself running out of options, try a more in depth system like PF.

A friend and myself are looking for a game. We are both new as well. I have some D&D 5E starter stuff, though. And I've made a character once before for PF, we just never played. SO I do kinda know how that goes.

I play Pathfinder on a weekly basis as GM so I'm a bit of an encyclopedia for that system if you end up going with that. The amount of customization makes it my favorite system. That said, JB is right. 5e is a pretty straight forward system. I don't know how much free content is available with it. All of the important Pathfinder rule books out are available for free online.

Depending on the time and day this would take place, I'd be interested in joining. My vote would be Pathfinder, but I'd deal with 5e.
