I'm dedicating Saturday (today, after I wake up) to the Guild, which will involve some admin stuff Hank and I have chatted about, but also a platform upgrade for the Guild's underlying software stack.

I've also been evaluating moving the Guild to a new host.

Cya soon.

Our Lord has returned to save us. Praise he! May our faith in Mahzism grow ever stronger as our beloved website evolves.

Has it been the host that causes these 502's? They're very frequent for me personally (like, every time I click a subforum, PM's tab, profile tab) where as others report having it once in a while. Maybe some ISP's have more trouble communicating with our current host than others. I'm not that savvy with this stuff so perhaps this is a stupid thing to ask. But I've not had any real problems with 502's before yesterday so I wonder how big the problem was, since it seemed to be serverside, but temporary.

Could it be a region or bandwidth issue? I haven't seen the Bad Gateway message for the past month. I'm located in Australia. My online hours are the inverse of the US.

I'm in the Netherlands, so my hours are roughly 6-10 hours from USA. Issues came up later in the afternoon but, really, it shouldn't be a matter of time since servers are online day and night.

I noticed that when the US wakes up, that's when a lot of my game connections go down. My only guess is that my Firefox handles the error differently on my machine.

Okay, my Day of the Guild starts now.

Yeah, no clue about the errors at the moment. The server is taking too long to respond, and I need to find out why. Could be that a common database query needs to be optimized which would explain why all 4 mini-servers get brought down.

I just opened my laptop so I'll start digging into logs and metrics.

@Mahz if at all possible, could you explain the problems in layman terms so that we can read along when you do fix it? It was incredibly interesting last time and might be again.

I'm currently updating the source code to adapt to major (breaking) changes in the underlying framework.

Quite an undertaking due to the size of the Guild's code.

Update: I'll continue working on this for the rest of the weekend. I reckon I'm 50% done with the source code upgrade.

Unfortunately I haven't yet spent much time tracking down the root of the timeout errors, so I hope yall can endure in the meanwhile.

I have a lot on my plate with the code/platform upgrade. I'm probably 70% done with the code update after working on it for 10+ hours yesterday and for hours today so far. Trying to finish that up today.

Though since the Guild code has so many pathways through it, it's hard for me to test every bit of functionality myself. So when I push the update, I'll be spending time fixing bug regressions that people will run into.

One side-effect is that the code is being somewhat cleaned up and modernized which will let me implement other things faster.

After the platform update, my 2nd priority is the timeout issues since I hope the platform upgrade magically helps out with that.

Then my 3rd priority is to catch up with admin/mod stuff. It's 3rd priority because these timeout issues are pretty catastrophic so I want to figure that out first.

I'll be working on the Guild all week.

@Mahz The load sounds like it sucks but the work is very much appreciated by everyone on the forum. Thank you for taking the time out of your schedule to do these for us.

@Mahz Seems like your priorities are all straightened out, lol.

Time out issues are a pain, so hopefully everything will get fixed there.

Thanks for all you do man.

In other words, patience is required while the parts you cannot see get fixed. You can't build a castle without a solid foundation, after all.

I'd say you can but it'd collapse easier, which is even more true. If we had all the features in the world but a shitty foundation, nobody would come here. And like I mentioned before - I'd rather see the existing features fixed and then never see a new feature, than for new features to get added while the old ones/the core of the site are left broken.

I'm guessing the new guild code is why I am unable to access certain pages in some roleplays that I am in. I will await for things to get set. Thanks for everything and making this site what it is.

@FantasyChic My code changes have not yet been pushed to the server.

I'm assuming you're talking about the timeout errors? I'm investigating that. :(

Looks like it's caused by some slow database queries on the critical path.

Update: Gonna tweak the logging on the database which will trigger a reboot of the database at some point soon.
