"You run, boy. And you keep running without ever looking back. If you do.
You'll regret it."
Etzer was born into an agricultural planet operated by the militia. Ever since he was young his father thought him how to work the land, and build up a strong family with that knowledge. Etzer looked up to his dad, always wanted to follow in his footsteps, until Operation: Adust, began.
Adust was the IMCs way of sweeping away the outer rim, and agricultural planets like Etzers own. With the outer rim planets cleared and out under the ruthless control of the IMC, that had a clearer shot to the Militia's core planets. And with the nearly defenseless farming planets vacuumed up by the IMC, the food supply would falter. And that's exactly what happened.
Etzer was only 14 when he did look back, and saw the building his parents were just in collapse, grasping on to his 5 year old sister's hands, which were currently wrapped around his neck as he went into the forest, never to return to his home city again.
...
He couldn't save her.
No matter how hard he tried, the sickness ended up overcoming his little sister, the disease consuming the life that once sparkled out in her eyes. He blamed himself for not trying hard enough, for not being more careful, for not looking out for her. But it wasn't true. It was inevitable. He came in contact with a militia outpost, and when they asked for his age. He claimed 18. Now at 27 years old, everyone sees him as 31.
Adust went on 17 years into his service, when the Militia finally stopped the IMCs final push at the Battle of First Step, a cliffside in the outskirts of a farming planet just like his own. He was weak, tired, but the possibility that the vibration from the recoil of each time he pulled the trigger, was the cause of an IMC soldier's death that participated in the destruction of his home planet kept him going. Unloading clip after clip into each soldiers body.
Etzer was recognized for his services for the militia in that battle, and the next year was pilot training for him. He was offered it twice before, but being as modest as he was, he declined, stating that he wasn't ready for it. After First Step...
He regretted declining it the first two times.
Etzer and Fives bonded very well early on, which made everything much easier. Etzer is now at a high rank in the Militia, with Fives right there at his side the whole way through.
