Name/Title: Jarl Ilgar, the Steel Heart.
Vignette: (optional) Write a short scene involving your character. It could show your characters flaws, ambitions, fears, hopes etc.
Appearance: Six three, powerfully built. She is blonde, most of her hair long, but shaved on one side, revealing scars and signs of cybernetic tampering that reach all the way up to her fierce gray eyes.
The most prominent cybernetics are her arms, both of which are completely replaced up to the shoulder.
Her battle armor is a series of light composite plates
History: A Battle Forged warrior of Vhal, she earned both her Steel and her title on an early raiding trip with her uncle. She blocked a grenade meant for him with her vibro-blade, raining shrapnel on her. Her uncle carried her from the fight, and saved her life as she had saved his.
Home System: Thur, the Slain System. An ancient battle, some say before the Empire even, cost Thur and its inhabitants thirteen of the fourteen planets the system once had. The star Thur still orbits at the edge of the galaxy, taking the rubble of dead worlds with it wherever it goes. It is an exceedingly difficult system to navigate, and few outsiders are able to penetrate the radiation seas and asteroid fields that surround it unscathed. The Vhalgren navigate not by fancy math or charts, but by lore, in poem and song, passed from master navigator to apprentice.
Capital Planet: Vhal. In ideal times, it is temperate, with good clear water and fertile soil. The soil and water are miraculously still good, but the debris that plagues the system diffuses the light of Thur, making agriculture difficult.
The planet still produces, but not enough for the hunger of its children, and so they send raiding parties in their great ships, to land on planets, take what they can, and flee before a larger force can come to the aid of their victims.
Thur orbits at the edge of the galaxy, a treacherous sea from which the Vhalgren attack suddenly, raiding whatever systems are within a short range of their system.
Subjects: Though founded by humans, Vhal has a great diversity of sapient species, owing to the respect that any decent fighter can gain among the ranks of their Raiders. There are farmers and manufacturers, scientists and artists among the Vahlgren. It is a common misconception from those familiar with the system that they are nothing but barbarous rapists, murderers, and thieves, but their home planet still contains the full scope of civilization, they just believe that what they can produce at home is not enough for their population.
The Forgotten Gods: The Vhalgren worship a confused, half remembered mishmash of ancient human gods. Their primary belief is that the push for Imperial Divinity erased the gods that humans had worshiped since the beginning of time. They mourn for their lost faiths, but their religion is hopeful, as they believe that the gods remember them, even as they forget the gods.
Flagship:
Ygdra: Jarl Ilgar’s personal command, Ygrda is a stolen carrier ship. It is lightly armed with a battery of side mounted ion cannons toward the front, and a pair of forward facing railguns. Space combat is not its strong suite, and Ilgar will typically avoid or flee a fight.
Ygrda’s main strength is the fleet of fast drop ships that it carries with it.
Fleet: A motley assortment of drop ships and space shuttles that Ygdra will deploy as soon as dropping out of FTL flight in orbit of their intended victims. The ships plummet to the surface, disgorge their fighters, and when the raiding is done they flee back into orbit. Their engines are heavily modified to take off quickly, with a deadly consequence: a Vhalgren raiding ship leaves the land it takes off from dangerously irradiated.
Battle Forged: Though in some societies, cyborgs are seen as disabled, or less than human, to the Vhalgren, they are seen as more, so long as they earned their place. A warrior who survived a grievous wound, and had their missing flesh replaced with steel and thunder is called a Battle Forged. Their prosthetics are built for war, and are a great honor, and a greater responsibility, to bear. An unblooded raider may return to Vhal and the life they had after fulfilling their duty to the Jarl, but one who is Forged must live their unnaturally extended lifetime in military service.
Warp Spears: A common weapon among Vhalgren raiders, the warp spear is tipped with a vibro blade and equipped with a simplified, but effective, warp propulsion device. When thrown, a warp spear jumps forward in space, reaching its destination in a straight line, almost instantaneously. A gesture from the wielder with a linked gauntlet calls the spear to warp back to their hand.
Force shields: handheld shields that emit a force aura that can block physical ammunition and laser blasts alike. The Vhalgren can form into a shield wall that links their force auras together to create a larger blocking surface, or even a bubble if enough raiders jump in.
