I'm on the guild discord (not that I use it). An arena channel could be neat, if it was active and on-topic.

If I joined, half the discussions I would derail to be about Evvie or some other zany character idea. Or talk about my Zelda Breath of the Wild obsession. I swear the game is harder than dark souls unless I changed my play style and went around getting ingredients to craft a bunch of good food to boost my hearts and stuff. Even at 6 hearts a large number of enemies one hit kill you or at the very least take you down to extreme danger. Now that I'm at 9 I can still get obliterated in 2 attacks easily unless I go to the weakest enemy variety, who do more like half a heart damage to me now.

@ImportantNobody Never played a Zelda game personally, but I've heard they're good. Regardless, there is no game harder than Dark Souls (haven't beat it yet, currently farming souls to level strength and dexterity to use BKH, to beat Gwyn with).

I've never played a bad zelda game (never played the cdi versions so I can make that claim) so if you like puzzle/adventure games it's really good. Plus the music has such catchy tunes they stay in your head for years. Oh yeah, and ocarina if time is the highest ranking game of all time and breath of the wild is number 12 on metacritic. Just throwing that out there. No biggie. XD

It's only not as hard as dark souls because, being open world, you can easily find ways to avoid fights and if you weren't as big of a cheapskate as I am you can create large amounts of very useful food to restore yourself, or use your most powerful weapons if you're in a particularly nasty bind. Weapons break in this game so you can't use your op weapons for very long. If you have no choice but to straight out fight the toughest of enemies and aren't filled to the brim with food, I stand by saying it's easily as hard as dark souls. Then again, you can restrict yourself in many games to make it as hard as dark souls should you choose, but in this game it's more like just being slightly careless and you can be put into such a difficult position.

I have been mulling over talking to some of my friends and acquaintances if they’d like to do a 1x1 battle scenario, as I have to say I am pretty nostalgic for giving the format a go after the recent “revitalization” talks. I doubt I’d join any of the ongoing tournaments currently (due to time and other commitments), but it might be fun to participate in the subforum now that I know a bit more about the personalities and such. Just not sure what character I would like to use in a bout or two yet.

@Inkarnate I'll duel you Gowi, maybe we could make it interesting with a Mecha Battle or something.

Not really interested in a mecha bout at the moment, unfortunately. Also, I’ve got a few bouts in the works so I should probably take the “involving myself in arena” thing slowly. I do not want to overextend myself, haha.

@Inkarnate Aren’t you cute? I bet you just love spin kicks and spam attacks, with your anime world aesthetics.

Oh and for the record? I do love my aesthetics, yes.

Topic: hidden character sheet fights for paragraph/forum based rp combat.

Opinion: it would be an utter faliure, due to promotion over-caution, stalling and passive play in a format that is already ludicrously slow, while also shifting the scales away from skill and towards luck as the deciding factor, as both players essentially have a much less concrete foundation for their strategies and general approach to the fight.

Take that shit to chatrooms, where you can keep churning out posts about running away from your opponent and ducking into cover because oh god what if they have a gun or can shoot lightning and i don't know within 15 minute intervals untill one of the sides just gives up and throws themself into an unavoidable instakill.

Discuss?

Generally, I think the higher tier combat gets the more likely it would come down to luck and hyper effective sneak attack power sets, so yes, I tend to agree with you, hiding profiles would take some of the skill out of the game. Tbh, I'd be more interested in seeing the far opposite, where both opponents have had time to study each other. That would probably lead to the ultimate game of skill, or at least as skillful as it can be without equalising the power sets.

Regarding the latter, i think a multiple lives scenario, like in your typical arena fps game, could make for an interesting high tier combat system. You could learn the actual strategies the opponent is using, as well as their sneak attack setups, forcing both players to get creative with how they employ those.

It would also be simply fun to explode someone into a fountain of gore multiple times over, as opposed to just once.

Hiding your strats until the last second is the essence of mortal combat. So hiding profiles sounds natural to me, provided you have a third party who has them only.

A youtuber Shadiversity came up with something I never thought of before. A centaur riding into battle...with a human rider. That would be interesting to have to fight against. The human rider would be free to do a bunch of combat related things without worrying about controlling a horse, and said "horse" has two free hands to wield their own weapons. Now if we could just come up with something for the centaur to ride, or something to ride the human. Of course a fairy could ride a human, or maybe a small goblin and then a fairy. The centaur could technically ride a dragon but them being a centaur loses the benefits.

I'm thinking of creating a player versus event roleplay where we're pitting against unique opponents such as that. I imagine them part of a militaristic kingdom.

The centaur, however, sounds like using 2 PCs in one fight, naturally making things a 2v1. If it was a horse, it would feel more fair, but the fact it's a centaur, who has equipabble upper body with additional arms, makes that easily unbalanced from a fight standpoint.

The opponent would have to be more powerful or team up with someone else or it could be an event type thing, like characters fighting against small armies. It's not something arena battles typically are but possible.

I'd imagine so, and I've always found 'swords and sandals' style human level combat to be a solid indicator of skill as well, though making a specific tier or build an official benchmark wouldn't be fair for everyone. I know wonderfully skilled players who've never touched an unpowered character in their career.
