@GrandzHelios

C'mon. It wouldn't be a pirate rp without swordfights!

Also awesome ideas, everyone! Keep em coming, and I'll get up the OOC at some point near the end of this week. I'm kinda busy right now.

@Silver Carrot

Sounds interesting! Besides who doesn't love pirates?

I like the idea of playing in a fantasy world, even if there is no supernatural/magic. By having it be a fantasy world, we can make our own history and allow people to play female characters if they want.

I like Penny's idea of old ruins and lost lands. That's easy enough in you make up the world.

Anyhow, I'm interested and will keep my eyes on this to see how it goes!

I'm iffy on the idea of having an entirely un-Earth setting that just happens to have Pirates in it. What's everyone's thoughts on having one of the Spanish ruins holding some kind of portal to another world, and that world is where this rp is set?

It could start with the idea Lokileo had, but after the mutiny, they find the portal, come out to a storm and lose the ship (as well as every crew member who's not a player character. Anyone who joins after this could be a native, and anybody here could also be a native if you choose), and that's when the real rp starts. Gypz's map could be the first place they end up. They find my Captain character, sign up with his crew because he has a ship (But is a Pirate from their world. Much mysterious). So they're honest men (and a woman) albeit hardened sailors who can fight, but they're all of differing morality and opinions about sailing under a Pirate. So the overarching goal/first arc of the rp is to find the Privateer's treasure hidden somewhere in this world, but the meat of the rp will be the new wotld itself, it's own mysteries, it's own ruins and treasures, the portal's reason for being, ect.

In terms of how supernatural to make things, I think the portal is far enough. We don't really need magic and skeletons to have a swashbuckling adventure. There may be some curses, though. I'm drawing the line at curses.

This is all coming together nicely!

Rather than a portal per se, go for a map that lets you find places that don't otherwise exist, sort of like that bamboo map from Pirates of the Caribbean. Lovecrafts dreamlands meets Jack Sparrow.

Plot: As for plot I'd go more with privateering. That way one can be "good guy" pirates. You may rape, pillage and kill but they're only people from a country we don't like and are sorta, almost, at war with.

Magic: I would lean into the idea that magic is more like "real world magic" and takes many minutes or even hours to cast making the usage of it in combat mostly pointless.

"Sure, I'll summon a kraken to take on their ship. I just need the bones of a drowned princess, thirteen teeth from a shark and two days to prepare. Anyone have any drowned princess bone?"

@Assallya Being a pirate means to attacks/plunder/ rob a ship at sea. And I believe that pirates rely more on surprise attacks and stealthy tactics. For example they may spy on a ship from distance and at night they could stealthily send a few men to sabotage it. Knockout the crew, take the commander/captain prisoner so no opposition rises and just take what they want. This is of course a scenario when they lay an ambush behind a rock formation or so.

In open sea it is unavoidable that you would kill someone when in a fight of life and death. Does killing someone make you a bad guy? Yes. Is a pirate a bad guy? Yes What is the name of this RP? Pirate rp. I forgot the point I was trying to make, it's late at night, you can interpret this however you want. I'm certain there's a point behind what I wrote.

Quotation marks indicate special emphasis, most often interpreted in a farcical fashion.

I meant good guys in the way that the Spanish Inquisition were the good guys

I think @Penny offers a good alternative to going for the whole different world perspective. Whole settings from scratch tend to make for more questions than answers in my experience.

We have a ready-made setting in the historical route that most people are already comfortable/somewhat knowledgeable about. We can use the map idea to make up places/legends as we please for the crew to explore.

There's no reason we have to stick strictly to the gender roles and superstitions of the time period. That's just something else we can tweak to make for a good story. I tend to alternate between male and female characters in my games and was looking forward to writing the female navigator that was suggested. I do a fair amount of navigation in my profession so that role was appealing to me.

@Pilatus

I'd rather have the real world be realistic so that the other world is not, and they do not share the gender roles and superstitions that were around in the Golden Age of Piracy. Makes for a nice contrast.

@Assallya

We have a good and fairly developed plot now. There's no reason to massively change it. This rp will be a very romantic, escapist 'swashbuckling' kind of pirate rp with treasure and maps and cutlass fights and all that good stuff.

I didn't suggest anything that "massively change" the stated plot. I openly, and in a friendly manner not meant to be ride or insulting, challenge anyone to find where I didu

A privateer is merely a specific kind of pirate that has a home country. Those that fly that country's flag are safe from him or her. That's all. Privateers are sometimes even seen as heros by their own country whose citizens blindly ignore the murders while the local military see them as vicious mercenaries. (Often they're just jealous because they have to five the loot over to the government)

As for the magic statement, you'll note Tia Dalma never threw any fireballs or anything ridiculous. However a witch aboard an enemy vessel would be really interesting. Sure he or she isn't going blow up your ship with magic but being able to constantly point out which way the players went could be a challenge for the crew.

@Assallya

Well, they're going to be in a new world. It's kinda hard to steal everything not nailed down in a brand new world and then claim it's 'for your country'. The ship the survivors came from was a privateer ship. I might even have been a fully legal ship. But the new crew they're going to join? I think my Captain's just in it for himself, for the riches.

@Silver Carrot We definitely need monsters of the sea. Fighting the Kraken? Probably gonna be the most epic part of the RP.

Except that Captain is from the new world, she could be loyal to her country or not. It's a possibility to consider, nothing more. Not knowing anything about a world that doesn't exist yet it's hard to say what would work best.

@Bishop

A fight with a large sea creature is a definite. Probably won't be the Kraken, or the Leviathan, but a brand new creature.

@Assallya

The Captain's gonna be from the old world, his past is gonna be mysterious and he himself will not be trustworthy, a good man or a "pirate but with a secret heart of gold" or anything like that. I like my characters more complex than that.

Before I make the OOC, @LokiLeo789, did you want to play the girl with the map from your idea?

No, I will be dropping from the race. I apologize. But If you would like to use the idea, I would be honored.
