This won't really be a complete thread until the 'search' function comes back online (I have layouts and the like that I enjoy using), but I thought I'd put this up anyway. It will be my...third...fourth attempt at an 'adult' Imperial Guard RP, every other attempt having comes to a conclusion before there times for one reason or another.

Anyway, enough of that.

What I'm looking for are dedicated fans of both 40k in general and, more particularly, the lore and the Imperial Guard; I envision Gaunt's Ghosts mixed with Sharpe and his Chosen Men mixed with the Dirt Dozen mixed with Alien mixed with Band of Brothers/Pacific and Saving Private Ryan. Generally, I wish to write (not really 'play') a gritty, semi-realistic (as 'real' as you can get with laser-firing cannon-fodder in a Grimdark universe), narrative along the lines of BoB.

Here a couple of things to note.

1. I'm looking for a fireteam or squad/section, depending on how many are interested, with specific positions to be filled.

2. We'll be part of a Penal Legion made up of elements from all over the Imperium, that means an expendable but surprisingly tough and vicious bunch of mofos. They could be anything from a clerk who diddled some numbers, to a serial rapist, murder, deserter, illegal gambler/brawler, a truly framed an innocent person...whatever.

3. This is Advanced, anyone looking at this forum should know what that means in terms of rules, writing etc.

4. Abhumans - Ogryns or Ratlings, that is all.

5. Characters are part of the Guard's Penal Legions AKA the scum of the Imperium, so no Astartes, Ecclesiastical troops, etc.

6. Realism; as I said I'm not expecting every little detail, but what I do expect is variety in personality and background, suitable responses to things, and no crossover between meta knowledge and knowledge that a character might posses. Lack of ammunition and so forth will also be a factor, decisions you make having an effect overall.

7. Characters can and will end up dying - you're in the Guard, son!

8. This is going to be a mature-themed RP, things will get adult, so you've been forewarned.

9. If you plan to leave after showing interest here, or you're just generally untrustworthy when it comes to remaining in an RP, just don't post here. Just don't.

That't it, for now.

Any questions then do ask.

Thank you for reading.

Would love to roll in as a prize-winning underhive gladiator thrice-blessed for death but still denied it by Emperor's will - even when he went completely bonkers on frenzon and slaughtered dozens of men and arbites in a bloody rage he didn't manage to die under fire and was arrested, judged and sent over to penal troops so that he could really put his life on the line for the God and the Imperium. Complete with a huge chainsaw instead of one arm.

No qualms about a frenzon-taking gladiator, but there is no way he would be sent to a Penal World or 'enlisted' into a Penal Legion; he would either simply be executed for his crimes, especially murdering dozens of Arbites and civilians, or kept fighting until he was eventually taken out. His having a chainsaw for an arm would also disqualify him, as he'd be damaged goods, incapable of holding a weapon and useless in what is essentially an irregular Guard formation.

These (warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Last_Chan…) are of course the most well known Penal Legion, and taking a look at the characters included can give anyone a bit more of an idea of what sort of individuals (or tropes/archtypes) would be expected.

Interested. Would a former Inquisitorial Stormtrooper sentenced to service in a Penal Legion for black-market dealing and embezzlement be accepted?

Sounds good, just wondering...why Inquisitorial? Why not just a standard Stormtrooper? If anything, an Inquisitorial ST would come from a Penal Legion. Could you explain that to me?

Dunno why Inquisitorial in particular perhaps I should just make him a regular Stormtrooper.

@Jbcool: As for character concept, I was thinking of a former PDF conscript who fought on the losing side of a planetary civil war and as result ended up in the Penal Legion. Would that work?

Thank God.

I won't be surprised if you've finally had enough of me, @Jbcool, but I've got a good feeling about the rules you've laid out for this one. I don't expect to have the same grievances I did last time we tried a Guard RP.

Also, I'll make things easier on you and make a lowly Guardsman without rank or special status who can easily be dismissed.

Deal?

@Jbcool Question, can you play as a penal legion cavalry man? I'm writing up a fan-made IG regiment of horse raised from a feudal world turned prison world which has an insane number of horses/mounts on it. If not, I'll just write in that the guy lost/ate/killed his horse or something.

Huh? I thought penal legions are highly renown for not being standartized in any way or sort, just ragtag bunches of scum and sinners sent to die for the Emperor in droves. Wouldn't the only discqualifier be the absence of neck on which to lock a bomb collar? If anything, a conscript that comes with his own weapon only makes it easier on the Munitorum.

No, Penal Legions have their standardized equipment from the Munitorum: a lasgun, a grenade, a knife, a bombcollar and a jumpsuit. You're forgetting that most Penal Legions allows the looting of enemy bodies and equipment hence the "disorganized, non-standardized" look you are thinking of.

Penal Legions are also raised from Penal World more often than not meaning they come giant prisons which do not allow for inmates to carry weapons for obvious reasons. When said persons are detained, their equipment and weapons are taken away and impounded so they don't get ideas of trying to use them on the prison guards. What you are thinking of is what happens when Hive Gangsters are pressed into service in dire times like during the First War for Armagedon but are not detained first.

It might be easier on the Munitorum in theory, but they're not stupid enough to give a serial killer a gun and say "don't use this while you're in prison and awaiting to be sent off to a penal legion".

Alas, no; feel free to make him a former cavalry soldier, but for this one I'm keeping it footslogger-centric.

Deal, and I generally don't mind disappearing acts...but when someone does it more than me, especially with some awesome RPs, it does irk me somewhat. Nevertheless, I know your quality, so you're always welcome.

So, thank you all for your interest thus far, I'll get to writing the OOC thread and have it up tomorrow.
