"Boys, welcome to 'Nam. Now, let's keep things simple for you knuckleheads that only got in because we've been lowering the fuckin' standards recently. We're here on behalf of Royal 'Nam, or South 'Nam. They're backed by our boys back in the States, despite what the fuckin' hippies seem to want. We're against the Commies up North, so surprise surprise, they're called North 'Nam, or Victor Charlie. Victor Charlie don't get along with Willie Pete very much, but that's a different matter altogether. You fuckwits are gonna get dropped in for your first mission against Charlie reaaaal soon. Search and destroy, but we don't do much of the searchin'. Get in there, burn those pretty little thatch huts that the primitive screwheads live in, and get the FUCK out, you here me? Get ready for Huey pickup at 0800 tomorrow morning sharp.

DISMISSED."

Get in the mood!

And The War Machine Keeps Turning...

So, I've been playing a lot of Vietnam war games recently, and I finally threw off the shackles of apathy long enough for me to throw this interest check together. Yes, we'll be entering the most infamous war of the past sixty or so years, but don't worry, this won't be a fun little romp through the jungle. If you don't like making characters and developing them, I'd recommend not going for this one, because death and new characters will be extremely common. If you're lucky though, you might get a medievac!

So, after you guys telling me you wanted a wide ranging war story. So, we're starting way back in 1961. September, to be precise. Here, we begin our story, with a group of fresh-faced North Vietnamese soldiers, currently on their way to the province of Kontum with around 1000 other communist solders in order to ovverrun the province captial, also called Kontum. Enemy response is predicted to take a few days, although no doubt there will be fighting within the city for as long as the North Vietnamese forces find themselves there.

So, as mentioned above, we'll be starting in 1961, and our first group of characters (which we will return to! Don't worry!) will be a group of PAVN/NVA soldiers before mass US involvement.

I have nowhere near the experience that you guys do, and I fully expect I'll make mistakes that you guys will pick up on instantly, so don't be afraid to call me out! As a history student, I have a perverse pleasure in learning more about history, and it sounds like some of you guys have fascinating tales to tell.

We'll actually be cycling through different characters, so don't worry, Advisors will come into the mix!

I saw 1961 an didn't read further. Are we sticking to PAVN or will there be NLF (Vietcong) Main Force or Local Force elements involved too?

For this segment of the attack on Kontum, just PAVN. NLF will come into the mix.

I am working on a PAVN infantryman.

Awesome.

Meanwhile, relevant thing on the progression and escalation of small-arms in Vietnam?

RPG-7s had just begun being adopted, although B-40 and RPG-2 rockets were still available (but they sucked p. hard in comparisson)

If anyone would like to take a role as a machine gunner/heavy weapons specialist, the Maxim 1908 or an RP-46 awaits you.

I'll take up lugging a Maxim around, if no one else has started on a heavy weapons guy.

Maxim was more of a defensive (pillbox from the tunnels) weapon, the DPM was a support weapon for ambushes and assaults.

And the 25 pound DPM is plenty heavy for people who at the tme had an average wieght of 90 pounds and stood about five foot four.

The average maxim mount wieghed as much as two otherwise fully equiped NVA soldiers.

@Lady Selune How about a local Viet Cong that knows the terrain and is acting as their scout and guide? They're a Northern unit just arriving in the Central Highlands, they might need a grizzled old cuss that fought the Japanese, then the French and now the Americans. A guy in sandals and peasant pajamas with an old Mosin or even a French MAS-36 (or something else entirely.)

Thoughts?

I think so. An old grizzled Viet Minh that knows the countryside. In my mind, I'm going to say this man fought at Dien Bien Phu.

Berthier rifles and Mausers were also things. There were also a number of old jap weapons such as the knee-mortar.

MAT-49s converted to fire tokies were prefered by many VC.
-As body-armor became a thing, the SKS became more prevalent a the NVA started to recieve AKs across all ranks.

US supplied equipment would mostly be WW2/Korea while US units would still be using Korea/Vietnam interwar stuff.

Majority of French supplied and Free-French units will be french.

Upper-end southern camo being Lizard and Tigerstripe (ERDL came much later, just entering the pipeline in '68). CIDG were give Frogskin (spotty) pattern.
-Unclear on NVA/VC camo patterns... rain (rice fleck) pattern and... whatever they had time for I guess (or surplus east german camo).

The disarray in French weapon supplies in the Indochina War and the various conflicts/suppliers the Viet Minh/PAVN/Vietcong had makes for a real selection of equipment. But if Selune is good with it, I'm going with an old guerrilla with a bolt action something something.

You're good to go on that idea.
