You're good to go on that idea.

Awesome, writing him up now.

Edit: As a thought, the PAVN units most active in this era are the ones sent down to help set up the Ho Chi Minh Trail and the logistics system to get supplies down to the Viet Cong. This becomes increasingly important to the war effort as it is also how troops are moved down it. Starting in 1959, the North Vietnamese government commits to supporting the insurgency in the South as the Ngo Dinh Diem regime makes it abundantly clear that there will be no referendum vote on unification per the 1954 Geneva Accords (distinct from the Geneva Conventions and I still get them confused in terminology) that temporarily partitioned the nation after the French pulled out.

To wit, Diem knew he would lose that vote to Ho Chi Minh and had abundant (but uneasy, because no one really trusted or liked him, and this definitely includes John F. Kennedy and Maxwell Taylor, who are more put off their feed by corruption and venality than, say, LBJ, who said, "Well hell, he's our boy.") support from the French and then the Americans so he decided to give Uncle Ho the finger. He, as a Catholic from the North, had a lot of strong supporters that were recent arrivals from the North who helped form his regime. This, incidentally, was part of the rift between mandarin types that were Catholic and part of the regime, often French speakers, and peasants who were often Buddhists and had grievances accordingly.

There are a lot of frictions in the Republic of Vietnam and Diem has a credibilty problem. His brother Nhu is another powerful figure in there and so is his wife, Madame Nhu, who is considered a huge power player in Saigon politics.

@HeySeuss AHEM.

"I promised not to go into politics, and would like for you to do the same"

Yes, I know this is harmless, but inevitably there's a point where we get into flame wars, and I'd rather just ignore the politics entirely- especially since this is the internet and politics on the internet can devolve into a shitshow at any opportunity.

None of that was my political opinion, I actually refrained from stating that. I was trying to outline the inherent social/cultural conflicts present in the RVN as a result of Diem taking power; he was not from the South, and was ruling over that region.

Ah, right, sorry for assuming. My bad. @Gunther Your character has been accepted and moved into the CS sheet, along with our NCO. I'll take the opportunity to ask people TO NOT POST INSIDE THE CHARACTER SECTION, as with the amount of characters we might end up making, I'm going to try to keep it organised.

Oh, and just as a general thing, I found a pretty good guide on uniforms:

It's all good. I get that there is a difference of opinion on the Vietnam War, and I will work around that mostly by sticking to what I can verify, and that includes comments made by JFK, LBJ and Maxwell Taylor, whom I've referenced thus far. I'm always happy to share some source material and add to it. I've also posted my character here for approval.

That makes three soldiers. Honestly, I'm already looking forward to this ^w^.

So, slow as my responses seem to be to things, I know some question of a Maxim versus a DPM came up. Should I be using the DPM over the other here? (I am aware of the 1908 being heavier, better suited to defensive work, ect) or shall I stick to what was initially suggested?

I'd say go with the Degtyaryov or an RPK/RPKS. Both were commonly used offensively.

RPD FTW (RPK had just entered soviet frontline service in 1961, and had not trickled down to Vietnam yet)

The RPD has its fair share of quirks, however. I'd suggest doing some in-depth stuff on how it is loaded and carried, and compared to other firearms your character would have used.

The ammo-drum, in particular. Was probably the only truly unpopular thing.

While the RPD is certainly a tempting option, actually had to go with a DP-28, even if it worse in pretty much every way in comparison to an RPD. Finally got him cranked out, time to go do some more in depth research on the DP-28 so I can write for it better.

As a side note, my reference for the uniforms came from a Veteran and Historian. wingman.dier.us/articles/uniforms.htm
The black pajamas and guerrilla smocks were used by the PLAF (VC) and the tan or Dark Green uniforms I used for my character were used by PAVN (NVA) units.

That link you offer is from an air soft site.

Upon more reading, it appears the dark green uniform is more frequently used by the enlisted soldiers while he tan uniform is used by the officers. I'm going to change mine to the dark green uniform. Suggest @Eisenhorn do the same for Quy Phan. I do like the character by the way. Phong Nga could be an assistant gunner, or ammunition bearer for Phan.

@Gunther I'm aware it's from an airsoft site, however as someone who has been to historical airsoft (mostly WWII, admittedly,) I can say that the vast majority of them try as hard as possible to be at least somewhat historically accurate, and reading through the list does give a good rundown of equipment.

@Lady Selune I can appreciate your desire to keep the Characters tab neat and orderly, but not allowing folks to update their character on their own will create more burden upon you. I always treat my character sheets as dynamic documents; updating them as the RP evolves. Just now, before the RP begins I realize that the lower enlisted soldiers of the PAVN wore the Dark Green khaki uniforms rather than the tan uniform worn by the officers or the black PJs worn by the PLAF. Since, I can't copy the character into the tab on my own, I updated my character's original post in the OOC. Maybe you could post a link to the original post in your post?

This is my update:

Uniform: Nga wears the standard dark green Khaki uniform of the People’s Army of Vietnam (PAVN). He prefers to wear the sleeves folded to just below the elbows. He wears the standard dark green-colored phenolic sun-helmet with mesh covering and tennis shoe-jungle boot, a cheap construction. His load bearing equipment (LBE) consisted of a tan canvas belt with a square aluminum buckle. Upon the buckle is a star, Nga personally painted red. Upon this belt is his canteen pouch, grenade pouches (with strap to go over opposite shoulder) and spare magazine pouch. Nga’s canteen is olive drab in color, of aluminum construction, a Chinese copy of a Japanese canteen. Nga used his trench knife to scrape some paint away and etch his name into the side of it. To complete his LBE, Nga wore the NVA “chest pouch” which resembles a shop apron drawn over his head, ending at the canvas belt. This chest pouch has three ammunition pouches and three smaller pouches for boxed cartridges. He also carries a Czechoslovakian ammunition bag, strapped across his shoulder to carry an additional five magazines. Upon his back, he carries the standard issue rucksack with a central compartment and three external pockets, based off a French design. In his ammunition pouches he carries eight 30-round magazines & 4 hand grenades. He possesses a ninth magazine which is inserted in the magazine well of his rifle.

I actually do like the idea of using a DP, largely since there may not be such a great oprotunity to use one later in the RP.

I guess I'll get to work on an NVA grenadier/sapper. The bringer of the boom.
