I don't think that power is Avatar exclusive. After all, wasn't that Amon's whole thing?

No, Amon used blood bending to achieve the same thing, but it was not the same technique.

@CollectorOfMyst Ah, okay!

Yeah, you're right, taking away a person's bending is exclusive to the Avatar and Lion Turtles. As for Amon, I think he was physically blocking the part of the brain that could access one's bending, not actually taking away the spiritual connection.

Ah.
I still don't think it's avatar exclusive though. The lion turtle gave Aang that ability, and the lion turtles gave everyone their bending originally, so I always thought that the lion turtle could give anyone that ability if they chose to.

@December@AllHollowsEve Amon was using chi-blocking principles applied through bloodbending (which hopefully is a forgotten art). So I'd assume he was applying the necessary pressure to chi points with the person's own blood. The lion turtles directly manipulated chi, so the healing (Korra's cure for Amon's technique) was likely strengthening the natural healing process.

You're very likely to see more environmentally friendly technology when the environment can physically and loudly object. I reckon the cars would still be internal combustion, but likely our level or better of hybrid car rather than the 80s dirty cars.

I think Amon's version of bending removal was kinda like a substitute for the real technique. Kinda of like a Fire bender being able to redirect lightning, but not being able to actually produce their own lightning. Simulates the end result, but it's not the real deal.

As for technology, I believe that yes, they would be far more eco friendly. Would the Water Tribes be modernized by this point? In LoK, the most technologically advanced thing we saw in the Tribes were Unalaq's car and Varrick's ship. Would a sewage/piping system be in place for ease of access to water that doesn't take up as much space as waterways and aquaducts, as well as internal heating for houses? Or, perhaps would they have taken on a much more rural approach, as they are the two portals into the Spirit World. I feel like heating and transport systems would be the only real technological advancements made in the Tribes, as the Spirits definitely prefer the natural world to man's creations.

@AllHollowsEve Ah... no, that's not it. The Lion Turtle Aang met was one of the last - they come from a time before bending. As for everyone else -

The Waterbenders learned from watching the moon push and pull the waves.
The Firebenders learned from the Dragons.
The Airbenders learned from the Sky Bison.
And the Earthbenders learned from the Badgermoles.

Okay, but in Legend of Korra, we're shown that everyone used to live in villages protected by the lion turtles, who would give them specific bending abilities for a limited time when leaving their village. That's where we find out that the first avatar stole bending from the lion turtles. That's what I'm talking about.

@CollectorOfMyst@AllHollowsEve You're both right. The lion turtles granted the ability to bend, but the "totems" (moon, dragons, sky bison, badgermoles) provided a way to refine the bending ability. Wan got fire from the lion turtle, but became an expert by learning from a dragon.

@Regitnui@AllHollowsEve

The ability to bend was something that was originally gifted to the residents of Lion Turtle villiages, however, the bending trait was passed down to only some of the descendants. It was from there that they refined bending from the totems, and the new generation of benders learned. I think.

@December Wasn't that what I said?

Anyway, so are we going with the "second incarnation of the second avatar"? There are spoilers as to why you can refer to Korra's successor as that, but are we all happy with modern-ish Avatar, "Rosai, the barbarian Avatar", as she's a sandbender from the middle of the desert and has to tackle a modern world.

Is that something that's been established as canon? I've never heard about Korra's successor, but there's a lot of media that I've missed outside of the shows.

@Gisk, no. It was my proposal on page 1. Rosai, the sandbender. Some other fans have come up with a sandbender to follow Korra as the Avatar, but I came up with the name and idea on my own. It's not canon.

Personally, I'd love to have a plotline about a 'weak' Avatar, who has to use finesse and skill where Korra did brute force. However, there would be two Avatar states: the White light of Raava where all elements could be controlled, and the berserker red of Vaatu, where massive power is granted in the Avatar's native element. This also makes the Avatar their own worse enemy, where order and chaos are both now embodied in the Avatar.

@AllHollowsEve Nope. I figured it would add drama, given that
Not to any great degree or power, just so that there's a new taint on the Avatar that wasn't there before.

@AllHollowsEve, so while the possibility of a Dark Avatar is is open, I think that'd be further into the future than what we can plan, and that the Avatar would be most likely influenced by dual spirits. For Rosai's "Vaatu" state (name's easier than "avatar after korra"), imagine Aang's uncontrolled Avatar State in the early episodes, while the "Raava" state would be more like the fully-realised Avatar state in LoK.

Equivalent power, but one has massive control over one element and very little restraint, and the other would be all four elements in perfect control. Neither would override the Avatar's base personality, and they may even be able to choose which state to go into. There's also that whole aspect of the eyes glowing red (Vaatu) and white (Raava) respectively.

Our theoretical sandbending avatar would be powerless if caught in the middle of the ocean in Vaatu mode, as there's no, or very little, earth to bend, even with the extreme power. It's basically a trade off. Power for control.

Of course, I could theorise all day. Until we start plotting, none of this could come up. What do people actually want to play?
- New Team Avatar?
- White Lotus Guardians?
- Ordinary Joes awaiting the Avatar?

I'd rather play New Team Avatar, but White Lotus Guardians would be nice too.
