@Zeroth I get what you are saying about the Deviants but the fact is that they adapted to surviving an encounter with a hunter, and then somehow evolved new features and things like that. Like how does a Crab surviving and encounter somehow make it double in size and be a mix of the two colours of its subspecies. Also about the G rank monsters (assuming you're referencing the lvl140 guild quests) I never liked them, and it sorta doesn't make sense how they are so much more powerful. I put that one up to adding replay ability to the game, tho I will admit they get a few additions to their attacks at the higher levels (120-140) but they never got any new attacks that I was aware of. Now addressing Apex's they are monsters that defeat the virus, and in turn they get crazy strength boots (that I did find annoying. Dam Drive stone...) but this is explainable from the in game information, albeit with some things that are left unexplained. Now when you get the virus as a hunter you cure yourself by attacking things and when you don't cure yourself you get a nasty debuff. But when a monster cures themselves of the virus by attacking other monsters that's how they become apex, but when they fail to cure themselves they die. That's why I assume that only the strong monsters like Rajang, Delijho and what not can become apex. Because the other monsters are not strong enough to survive going berserk and attacking everything.

That whole virus bit is just a theory of mine but I feel it has fairly strong points. Tho I'm still not 100% on why the monsters stay Apex permanently perhaps it is again another discrepancy between how humans and monsters interact with the virus. Considering humans do get severely harmed by it unless they stand in a pool of it while effected by the debuff.

@LeamonZest89 Well, rather than thinking of their adaptations as an "evolution" like Pokemon, think of it more like how working out a muscle damages it, but when that muscle heals it becomes stronger. Maybe a Damiyo Hermitaur just naturally grows one claw larger than the other as it ages, like a fiddler crab, but because Hunters are used to succeeding when they hunt them, or because most of the ones that get hunted are younger, that size difference isn't always readily apparent. Or maybe that claw is one that got its shell broken a few times by Hunters, but the Damiyo survived and got away, and its claw healed up stronger. Maybe the only reason Deviants don't have individualized features--for instance, a Damiyo with a Duramboros skull instead of a Monoblos' as its shell, because Hunters broke that one--is due to game-limitations and thus not all Deviant Hermitaurs are Stonefist Hermitaurs. Plus it's pretty clear some of them are just really old--Silverwind Nargacuga, for instance, just seems like its fur has gone white with age like a real-life silverback gorilla or something.

G-rank Quest monsters, whether they're the normal G1-G3 monsters or the special Everwood quests, are considered stronger simply because they or their environments are much tougher than normal. Same reason not every human being is Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps, or Bruce Lee--some monsters are just born with talents others don't have, or over the course of their lives they develop differently. Like the Deviants, they've probably survived a few Hunts, and if they share their territories with things like Deviljho then the weak ones will all either be run out of the area or culled from the genepool.

Your understanding of the Apex condition is pretty much on-point--Monsters and Humans react to it differently, probably for the same reason real life diseases don't always affect two separate species in the same way. But the fact that Humans, if they deal enough damage while under its affects, also get a Boost and not just a debuff, implies to me that the Apex State is just that same concept working for the Monsters. In their case it's permanent, and what's more they often add the Frenzy Virus's effects to their own attacks. That probably means that the Frenzy Virus is still actually inside them--like a Human who's carrying an STD but isn't showing any symptoms of it at the moment. So if the Frenzy is still circulating in their blood stream, and we assume that the virus can multiply itself like normal virus cells or bacterial infections, then their Apex state never wears off because they've become aggressive enough to overcome it like Humans, but their immune systems either aren't strong enough to purge it or don't react to it the same way a Human's does. According to the Wiki, monsters that are known to be able to be affected by the Apex State are Deviljho, Diablos, Gravios, Rajang, Seregios, Tidal Najarala, Tigrex and Zinogre, so your hypothesis that only stronger monsters can survive the Berserk nature or the Healing Debuff long enough to go Apex is probably right too.

Personally the thrill of the games to me is overcoming each and every challenge, even if I do ragequit sometimes if a particularly difficult Quest gives me too much trouble. So the idea of including all this in the RP, along with things like the Burst Species or other rare variants, appeals to me just like fighting them in the games.

See that's a problem for me. Monster hunter isn't pokemon, it's monster hunter and no monster beforehand had show any kind of evolving ability except maybe the Zamtrios/Zarmite but that was more just growth not actual evolution. It's just sort of out of place IMO and makes no sense within the game itself, tho that is sorta expected of a spin off title. I know Monster hunter stories is also a spin off and I'm allowing that, but I am heavily "nerfing" it so to speak. Not bagging deviants in game tho the quests do sorta tick me (Never been a fan of just fighting the same monster until it gets buffed enough to OHKO you). Like I think it's better when the difficulty of the fight is based more on letting you take a few hits before carting and not forcing you to take guts or heal after every attack you get hit by tho that's just me, I prefer having more of a fair fight then praying I don't get dinked and die.

It doesn't matter in the end. Tho 3U was one of my favs and I honestly need more time in it. Only got like 150 hours max. I got more than 4 times that on 4U (which I think is the best current MH game.). Also not sure why people say the older MH's were so good, like I love them to death but objectively there was quite a lot to be desired.

I think 4U's the best too, although maybe my impression of Generations would have been better if the US had gotten Double Cross instead of the non-G-Rank version. But in addition to being generally unimpressed with Styles and Arts, even if some of them look really cool, after having 4U actually give us a decent story (which was basically non existent in MH before that, just different variations of "help our village,") and more lovable and--to a small extent, admittedly--deeper characters, Generations' cast felt like literal freakin' cardboard. Hell, seeing all the past characters from OTHER games is the highlight of Generations to me--I squealed like a schoolgirl when I got to meet all the peeps from Moga Village again and the other villagers I never met from earlier games, and when the Caravaneer and crew showed up I was like "Oh please take me back, I hate everyone in Bherna except the Moofas and the fat cheese cat."

Glavenus is now one of my all time favorite Monsters tho, so there's that.

@LeamonZest89Fine by me. And yeah I might have gotten a little carried away--introduction posts are always long since I feel like I need to describe the character and their take on events, and I like getting descriptive about environments. But this last one probably went too deep into all the preparation of hunting. I did it that way though because I've always loved those cutscenes at the beginning of the games where they show a team of Hunters setting up all their traps or making their camp and whatever before the actual hunt--like this one. It just makes the setting feel so much more alive to me.

I get you. I hope the free hunt feature in MH world will be multiplayer. And then eventually you have to start gathering mats from the environment so you can take on the monsters safely. That would make me so happy, like you and 1 or 2 mates are walking around after a few monster take downs and you're all out of potions then suddenly Jho pops up and you all have to hide in a bush and wait tell he passes before gathering some herbs, blue mushrooms and some honey before giving that Jho a whack.
