Professor Brovak

Intercepted.
@hagroden@FlitterFaux

"Ooh, an interesting idea. Are you some sort of mind reader, by any chance? How do you know that Mr. Coridell wants to be proven inferior? And, perhaps more importantly than that, Mr. Breckenridge..."

A pair of gloved, bony hands clapped themselves onto Alexander and Yrhen's shoulders from behind as their owner spoke. Brovak's voice sounded almost distant, even slightly grainy, as though they were hearing it through a cheap radio. And the sickening aura from the opening ceremony was back, too - and perhaps even worse than before. The man leaned forwards between the two students, then pushed them apart and stepped between them.

"...How did you know Ms. Oharra here had zero Foundation training? Or are you just wildly guessing and praying to Calvo that you're right before you open your mouth or take action? Because you just put yourself in a very, very bad position, Alexander Breckenridge."

The cold, bony hands were still on their shoulders. Brovak tightened his grip on Alexander's shoulder. "...You used nerve control magic on another person. You should consider yourself lucky that Yrhen had neither the Foundation skill nor the inclination to retaliate, because you gave her full license to kill you in self defense back there. You should have known better: the rules on fighting and magic were explained to you earlier. Speaking of which... Yrhen, you will report to Professor Volkova's office at 18:00 tonight, immediately after dinner. Breckenridge, you will report to my office at the same time. Don't lose these."

With that, Brovak finally released the two and handed them a pair of small appointment cards. Alexander's card told him to go to Room RB-212 in the Research Institute to meet with Professor Brovak at 6:00 PM, and Yrhen's card told her to go to Room AD-147 in the Administrative Building to meet with Professor Volkova at 6:00 PM. The backs of both cards had a simple map showing which buildings on campus they should go to. The robed figure turned and walked back towards the cafeteria, tilting his head back for some parting words. Not once had he given them the chance to reply throughout his entire lecture.

"By the way, the tour is in a few minutes. If you haven't finished eating, I recommend you do so. Don't screw up again."

Bawen Coridell

Bawen choked back a sigh of annoyance that wanted to burst from him as the diminutive professor demanded his name. Not so much as to not offend Professor Vance, though he would be lying if he said that that wasn’t part of the problem. He’d heard little about the Vance twins, but the little he DID know was that the ‘younger’ one was in no way what she seemed. A wolf in sheep's clothing, if you would.

However now was not the time to have an appreciation for irony, as the woman’s glare seem to be digging into the depths of his soul. An impressive feat, considering that both he and the other chimera dwarfed the woman easily. "Bawen Coridell ma’am." He says, deflating slightly as it dawns on him that, in his first day, he’s insofar inconvenience no less than three humans. He would like to argue it was not entirely his fault, or that he’d not technically violated any social etiquette or school rules.

"If anyone’s to blame for this whole thing...” He thinks, shooting the devil boy a dirty look, "It's that filthy mutt for not knowing how to keep his mouth shut.” Still, he buried that argument deep. Giving the human excuses wouldn’t be polite and she did not seem to be in the mood for it. And frankly, this whole morning had been such a disaster that he wasn’t either.

"Please excuse me and my fellow...Chimera." He says, finally, his tone the picture of propriety and grace, but the last word still somehow dripped with venom. "We're both immensely sorry for any disturbance we might have caused." he adds, watching as the two previously fleeing humans get caught by another staff member. Hopefully, owning up to the disturbance to Vance might differ most of the blame to them. And that he just so happened to be dragging the devil boy down with him, well...it was a nice bonus.

As small girl fled the scene, running past Lucannus he didn't move an inch or even turn around to see where she had gone. The devil simply stared the man in front of him in the eye, not moving one inch. As the human took a step closer, Lucannus didn't move an inch.

"Lay a hand on him, and you'll forget what it feels like to have use."

Lucannnus wanted to chuckle as this man tried to threaten him, this is the reason why he despised humans. They all believed they were the most powerful being in the universe yet when they meet the end they are in pieces. As the man walked past him Lucannus didn't even turn around, he simply gave him the same look he gave the cunt on the floor. He Faced the woman who was sitting at the table nearby who said to settle down. Lucannus just slightly turned his head in her direction giving her a piercing stare signaling for her to stay out of it. His gaze then fell upon the poor chimera infront of him in, as Lucannus was about to take a step forward he heard a voice from behind asking for their names, it sounded particularly hostile. He looked over his shoulder to see an incredibly small lady who seemed to be annoyed.

He turned back to the Chimera as he said his name, Bowen Coridell was the bastards name. As he shot Lucannus a dirty look he wanted cracked his hands a bit more. The Chimera then went on apologizing to the staff member, implying that Lucannus was sorry as well.

"Lucannus Murdoc" He said as he turned to the lady, he looked over his shoulder at the little bastard.

"I am not your fellow Chimera. Don't make assumptions and put words in my mouth you filthy runt" He turned to the staff member in front of him giving her some respect though you could clearly hear he was not happy with the outcome.

"Honestly, I am not sorry for anything that I have done just now miss. To say I am sorry would simply be a lie you would see through easily."

"Mr. Coridell that kind of talk will not be tolerated here. The same goes for you Mr. Murdoc. Furthermore you are not required to be sorry for how you feel but you will be held accountable for your decisions. This includes threatening another student. Both of you need to exercise better self control in the future. Consider this a warning."

Though she did not state the fact itself, it was not hard to figure out that there would be no second warning.

Emilya took a moment to scan the surrounding area. Her eyes became briefly unfocused while she used her own Vision magic to see for herself exactly what had happened. When they came into focus again they were locked on Mallory and Emilya's harsh expression softened. She even smiled slightly and nodded to the girl. "I appreciate your attempt to defuse the situation, as well as your good judgement in not using magic to do so."

She glanced across the room to where professor Brovak and the other two students were. A darker, somewhat concerned look crossed her face. She knew now that the boy who had stepped in to try and control the fight with magic was a Breckenridge, and his breach of the rules, however well intentioned, came as something of a shock. Another concern entirely was how much attention Brovak was showing Alexander and the girl that had initially taken the situation too far. Normally he could care less as long as he fulfilled the bare minimum of his duty as a member of staff.

She decided to look into this later and turned her attention back to the students around her.

"Finish your meals, then. The tour of school grounds will begin shortly. Not you, Mr. Coridell. We need to have a few words in private." With that Emilya walked towards the cafeteria entrance, expecting the boy to follow.

Yrhen tried her hardest to ignore the boy that had come up alongside her, the very same that had disabled her arm. Her nearly ever present scowl deepened and she refused to look at the boy or stop moving.

Why did he have to follow me? Just go away!

She did not get her wish as he started talking, trying to... reassure her? Apologize? Explain the psychology of the boy she had hit? It seemed a kind and well intentioned effort but she was very much not in the mood for any of it at this point. He sounded honest enough but she was far too shaken internally to entertain any amount of trust.

She was about to tell him off when a disturbance in the air near her head alerted her to the fact that someone had managed to get in close right behind her. Far too close and a hand was coming down on her shoulder. Her instinctive reaction was to whip around and strike whoever it was as hard as she could. However, as the hand clapped down on her shoulder she froze in place. There was something very wrong with that hand. She felt no heat from it, though it moved as if it belonged to a person. Not only that but those fingers felt unnaturally thin with almost no padding to them.

Her head snapped around to see who or what could possibly have a hand like that, and she found herself even more deeply upset at the 'face' behind her. It was the bandaged and goggled face of the staff member she had seen approaching them, and his presence was especially disturbing this close, with his unnatural hand touching her. The professor's voice made it even worse. Her sense of nausea was suddenly much worse and it took all her energy to repress her shaking and the urge to vomit. She crossed her arms tightly across her chest, or as tightly as she could with one half dead, and looked away from them, glaring death at nothing in particular.

It was very difficult to focus on the professor's words with his cold hand on her shoulder but she got the gist that he was chewing out this boy, Alexander Breckenridge, pretty hard. Apparently using magic at all was against the rules, at least in the way it had gone down. On top of that the professor's assessment of nerve control magic did nothing to make her feel better.

I would have been in my rights to kill him in self defense? He must be exaggerating. I hope he's exaggerating...

By the time Brovak handed each of them the cards and released them from his grip Yrhen was grinding her teeth. The absence of Brovak's hand was like the freshest breath of air after being trapped in a small room breathing engine fumes. Deciding she was absolutely finished with being touched today she quickly walked the rest of the way to the cafeteria doors and slammed them open. Once outside she took a sharp turn and picked up her pace, looking for any secluded area where she could take a moment to catch her breath and calm down.

Rounding the corner of the building she found a space that was good enough for now; there were no people around anyway and she was not very visible from most angles. She leaned back against the wall, closed her eyes, and took a deep shuddering breath. Opening her eyes again she unbuttoned the glove of her partially numb hand and had a look underneath. She grimaced and shivered in the cold morning air.

Rikka Kishimoto

Location
Cafeteria

The train slowly puffed to a stop as it had arrived at the train station it was destined to be at. Smoke was puffing from some of the copper pipes under the hefty machine making the station a tad misty, just the perfect setting for a rainy autumn day like this. Rikka stared up at the sky from her cabine window seeing that it was colored a very boring color of grey. The rain and sky altogether made her feel a bit drowsy and lacking at the same time. If she could only be under a comfortable warm blanket right now that would be her one and only wish right now, but she couldn't complain about the weather right now when there was a life changing event about to happen for her.

Rikka got off her chair and walked after all the other students out of the train zeroing herself in as one of the last people to arrive at the courtyard. Rikka watched her eyes out at what was all happening around her, all the different and weird looking people, students much larger than her while still being first years, weird looking teachers, a beautiful garden full of flowers and trees, the magic happening above her that she had not even noticed up till now. It was something completely different than she was used too. Today Rikka wore a black skirt about knee height long, white knee socks to cover up the bareness of her legs, a sloppy pink shirt that hung from her shoulder. and a brown leather jacket for the rain.

She noticed the other group arriving later then the first group with mostly only chimeras in it it seemed. Were they so cautiousness of humans that they had to leave such a gap between themselves and the humans? She hadn't seem as much chimeras as others in her life yet because of the small barely populated town she lived in before coming here. That is why it was struck as a bit weird to see them going off the train after the humans. What did not come to mind was that humans and chimeras got off in turns for no particular reason. Rikka turned her head back to what supposedly was the main stage again, watching patiently till something was about to happen just like most others did.

Everyone had their eyes on the podium, Rikka tried glancing away a few times feeling rather awkward with this situation but quickly snapped her head back when anyone around her had seen her drop attention. Silently she watched the ceremony unfold, a screen had lowered from ceiling and got anchored down by some wires with what presumably also magic. A short movie? The movie went on about a life with happy children and gradually revolved into some sort of recruitment horror movie. Why did they show this to them? It was a bit of a weird video she thought.

Soon the crowd started moving again leading Rikka into some new areas of the school as she gave an awe at every and each room they came by and went through. Eventually they ended up in the cafeteria where they could each get something for themselves. Rikka silently went up to the line too and got herself a big plate of mild curry, one of her favorites. As any normal person she just sat down somewhere close to the half dog chimera with not too much other people so she could be alone for a bit and eat at peace. She immediately poked her spoon into the warm rice dish and slowly dug through the whole plate. A wild situation had enveloped around her but Rikka put not attention to it taken away by the taste of this well done dish. People were slapping each other and taunting back and fort but that was to utmost important right now.

Alexander Breckenridge
Interacting with: @Azereiah @FlitterFaux

Alexander felt him before any of his senses picked up on the impossibly old professor's approach, the aura cast forth by Mr. Brovak was just as encapsulated in legend as his own family name. Should one have heard any of the numerous tales surrounding Brovak prior to meeting him, they would likely be able to recognize who the aura belonged to long before actually seeing the man. Not even a moment after Alexander became aware of Brovak's presence, he heard the distant, warped voice of the Professor as well as the cold, skeletal fingers of the man on his shoulder.

As Brovak's fingers fell on his shoulder, Alexander was forced to resist instinctive retaliation in the form of nerve manipulation. In situations that caused as much stress as Brovak's mere presence, Alexander had often used his magic, and it took an active amount of concentration not to do so here. After all, this predicament had been caused by Alex's instinctive use of magic, and it was doubtful that it'd help anything or anyone at this point.

After he was certain he wouldn't accidentally numb out one of the Proffesor's limbs, he turned slowly to face the man speaking to both himself, and the girl next to him, whose name was apparently Yrhen Oharra. Alexander listened silently, his expression changing once again from the kind and gentle boy his mother had fostered to the cold and harsh man his father had carved. His eyes made unyielding contact with the professor's as he spoke, and despite the growing sense of Nausea in his gut, Alexander stood straight.

Alexander listened closely as the bandaged being before him spoke, and the tightened grip Brovak gave him was met by a steely gaze as the Professor explained that Yrhen would have been within her rights to attack in a lethal retaliation, and Alexander nearly chuckled at this. He was well aware of the repercussions his actions could have incited, but he was also aware that no such repercussion would stop him from doing what he knew needed to be done, even if it could result in his death. One of his father's favorite lessons was instilling an apathy towards death in his son, and he had done a damn good job at that.

After Brovak seemed to have finished talking, Alexander took the card and placed it into the pocket of his jacket. He then turned and followed Yrhen out of the cafeteria, but he stood still just outside the door as Yrhen continued to walk away. Reaching into the "Gun-Pocket" of his jacket, he produced a soft-pack of unfiltered cigarettes, and brought one to his mouth. Returning the pack to his pocket, he retrieved an old Zippo-Style lighter from the same pocket, one that was engraved with his family crest and last name. With a gentle sigh, he lit the cigarette and began smoking the aromatic tobacco it held.

Jesse is having a good day. Jesse fall asleep on the train ride there and the only one that notice her was the person that checked tickets making her among the last off the train, so she didn't need to deal with the crowds when getting off. It was raining when the train stopped, which is actually a pulse as the rain is Jesses favored weather and she has her oversized coat. There is also the unusual architecture and the garden, as she is certain that there were some birds hiding from the rain in the garden. However what Jesse really liked was how interesting the people are.

Like that group that got in a fight!

In the cafeteria Jesse was watching Purple who was trying to pet Whistle a few tables over. Will Purple pat Jesse's head too? Jesse wanted to go find out but she was eating and only had half a hour to eat her trays of food, and Jesse was hungry.
It would seem Whistle made friends with Little and Giant, but following them came Uniform who picked up Little and smacked him. I wander how good a hand print that will leave? A Breckenridge stood up said something and Uniform dropped Little, it is kind of odd how her arm is not moving anymore. After Uniform's arm stopped working Breckenridge pulled Little back and stared at Uniform. Then a new party showed up, Spiky, and he has even angrier than Breckenridge. Everything would have come to blows, and maybe some lightning, between Breckenridge and Spiky, maybe Uniform too, if it weren't for the Professors showing up. Professor Goggles reminds me of Uncle Oskar, back when he was around.

These people are amusing.

Mark's invitation was directed at only one person, but his voice had the reach and impact of a shotgun blast and sure enough, others heard. A sheep chimera rejected his offer and insulted him, before scurrying off to another table. Mark wasn't oblivious to the ever-present discrimination going on in the world, but was still shocked that another chimera would speak like that. His coaching instincts immediately locked their sights onto all one hundred pounds of wiry insecurity and Mark immediately knew that the chimera needed to be exposed to the soldier way of life if he ever wanted to truly live. He had the contrarian tendency to see chimeras as real life superhumans, and the sight of another of his kind rejecting himself had suppressed any emotions that would have come from being insulted. This mindset was also an effective distraction from the words of the girl who patted his head, as they carried unfortunate implications about the public view of military affairs that he would rather try to ignore than extrapolate.

Another person reacted to Mark's outburst, also fueled by the second-hand embarrassment that the dog coach emanated effortlessly. Mark, having finished licking his plate clean, was surprised at seeing someone go along with his plans so quickly. Everyone that foolishly followed Mark's ideas required interrogating, insisting and motivation beforehand, and now a large soldier was in front of him, eager to continue.

"SALUTATIONS BERKE, MY NAME IS MARK STEEL. ARE YOU -ALSO- A FOLLOWER OF THE SOLDIER WAY OF LIFE?"

The second half of his sentence was a verbal pit trap, disguising itself by blending in with his introduction. Saying no was a bad idea, as it invited Mark to attempt converting his conversational partner. Saying yes was something no being had ever done before, and no one really had the urge to find out the result. Berke was saved from his doomed fate as a fight began to develop in the cafeteria grounds. Mark ignored the actual context and began to treat it as a sparring match, watching in total silence.

The fight was initiated by a girl who took offense to Bawen's statement and decided to roughen him up a bit. Mark, rather than support the girl who was defending him, stared at Bawen with the sort of determination that a teacher would have towards a student. The sheep chimera's manhood was on the line and so he knew better to interrupt anything, and opted to instead observe their fighting techniques. Fighting was what sharpened men's spirits and displayed their passions. The rush of adrenaline when spectating or engaging in any form of combat made Mark's heart race more than anything else ever in the world. If a man couldn't fight, then how could he ever hope to be something as glorious as a soldier? His tail and ears tensed as the boy made no attempt to defend himself from his opponent. Mark paid plenty of attention to her as well, impressed by the fighting spirit the girls in the academy were capable of.

If the idea of an unresponsive combatant and a female one weren't life-changing enough, the idea of several more interrupting the fight and even using magic certainly sealed the deal in demonstrating just how different the institution was to home. It made it a bit tougher to judge everyone's abilities too. If poor Berke had said anything to the dog it would have been like talking to a brick wall.

As the conflict waned and the participants resorted to talking Mark's excitement began to soften his senses and gently return them to normal. His clenched jaw and tightened body settled down afterwards in unison. Predictably, the majority of what was said flew over his head, with the exception of one of the institute's professors lecturing the others on magic. Magic was banned, but if someone used it on you it gave you permission to use it also? Mark's brain broke up professor Brovak's words into smaller chunks in order to properly take in the information. A voice in his head told him to avoid violence in order to follow the rules as closely as possible, while another desperately wanted to fight everyone. Tough times were ahead.

Day One - Campus Tour - Dorm Assignments

9:50 AM, August 6th, 1210PW. 42 Degrees Fahrenheit. Cloudy.
On the Institute: with the disappearance of the Headmaster, the Institute has chosen Harad Gadtfendt to act as temporary Administrator. The town council believes this is a sign of a coming disaster. - Arclan Horadsteg, Mordhaben Heralds' Guild, 242PW

At 9:45, the sky pulsed green once, followed by the sound of a modest bell tower ringing out two times across the campus. Five minutes later, Professor Katarina Volkova, and Boorkat and Katrice Malkin arrived, with a fourth (and very, very short) Chimera boy in tow. The clocks mounted around the cafeteria wall flashed green twice as well, showing that breakfast was over.

Professor Volkova glanced towards Alexander Breckenridge, then stepped inside. She would simply collect him on her way back outside, if he didn't come back inside of his own accord. Once she reached the center of the cafeteria, she made an announcement via the brass acoustic megaphone in her hand. The announcement would probably be heard outside, and a few of the more sound sensitive Chimeras in the room cringed and clamped their hands over their ears.

"Attention, new students. Breakfast is over. Leave your trays where they are, and follow me to the front entrance of the cafeteria."

After waiting for most of the students to start moving, Professor Volkova turned around and exited the room once again. Outside, Boorkat and Katrice Malkin were still waiting, and the crowd of new students from the opening ceremony gathered on the cobblestone sidewalk outside the cafeteria. The small catlike Monster from before was riding on top of a tall student's head, complete with a small piece of raw steak hanging out of its mouth. The staff waited for some time, and after a while, Brovak and company joined the group outside as well. Volkova made a second announcement once the crowd seemed suitably large.

"Is everyone here? Good. We will begin the campus tour shortly. Lunch will be served at the end of the tour, during which time we will also assign dormitories and roommates. Follow me, everybody."

Katrice Malkin, the smaller lobster chimera, stayed forwards of the group at all times to translate the tour details into sign language for the group's special needs students. She'd been doing this for years and knew roughly what to expect.

The Tour

The group led by Volkova and the Administrator moved westwards first, a short ways down the road, and crossed a T junction to follow the sidewalk further along. Three large buildings rose up in front of the group. On the left was one huge, square building of smooth red clay, with a pair of enormous garage doors on each side, facing the street. On the right were two somewhat modern brick buildings - one in the shape of an L and four stories tall, and a second further along that was shorter, with an entrance hall facing towards the cafeteria and administrative building.

Volkova stopped in the middle of the three buildings. "To the south is our dry goods warehouse. Most of the more common and bulkier class supplies are stored there, as well as all standard furniture for your dormitories, and replacement parts for important hardware. The warehouse basement is where cold goods are stored, and can be accessed through a freight elevator in the back. You probably won't need to use this building often."

"To the northeast of us is the Social Building, and to the northwest is the Art Building. Follow me and please keep as quiet as possible," she continued.

The Social Building

Volkova led the group into the Social Building first, through the south entrance's large, undecorated wooden doors. Immediately inside the entrance hall were a series of staff offices on the right-hand side (SB101-124), and a series of glass display cases mounted to the walls on the left. Each case contains a historical artifact unearthed by the Institute, as well as a plaque bearing the artifact name, the name of the discoverer, the discovery date, and a brief explanation of what the artifact is. Many are immediately recognizable objects, but just as many are more 'esoteric', and many of the cases remain empty. None of the displayed artifacts seem to be remotely magical at first glance. Further along the hallway are more doors for classrooms, with an alcove next to a staircase and an elevator midway down the hall.

Once out of the entrance hall and in the main room, the group would find that above them lay a set of three catwalks bordering the walls on each level rather than a solid floor, with ornate gas lamps hanging from the underside of each walkway, illuminating the dark wooden hall with a soft white-orange glow. An older student in enormous glasses looked down over the wrought iron railing from the top level, and dropped a balloon filled with some kind of liquid towards the group, only for it to completely vanish in a puff of destructive magical energy the instant Volkova looked upwards at it. She quickly scribbled an appointment ticket for the young man, and when he tried to escape into his classroom, the appointment ticket hovered through the air and chased after him, disappearing into the fourth floor. Volkova turned back to the crowd and began speaking again as though nothing had happened.

"This building is where all lecture-based courses and non-experimental courses are taught, including History, Political Science, Sociology, Unoctocan, Foreign Languages, Mathematics, and the like. It was originally dedicated exclusively to social sciences, but has more recently been expanded to include other courses as well. On the right is break lounge, and across from it on the left is an exit to the outdoor break area. As you may have seen a moment ago, students here often get bored and like to play 'pranks' like Mr. Edneu did, so keep an eye out for falling objects. There is very little of note here, so we'll continue to the Arts Building next."

The A-S Commons, and the Arts Building

Volkova and the Malkins led the group out the left side exit of the Social Building and across the common area between it and the Arts Building. The common area was filled with such a thick abundance of plantlife that the sun only barely reached the ground between leaves, needles, and woodshroom caps, and a series of standing arc lamps lit the space beneath the canopy, illuminating small fish ponds, wrought iron and oak benches, and flowerbeds containing large breeds of tropical plants of all colors - all bearing the marks of Groundskeeper Billy's near-perfect maintenance. Where the arc lamps' lights didn't reach, bioluminescent flowers lit the space with varying shades of dull blues and reds.

The Arts Building's entrance doorway was framed by flowering vines, and Professor Volkova led the group through a pair of large black shroomwood double doors, each carved with scenes of dozens of people struck by inspiration and in the midst of creative ventures ranging from sewing to painting to blacksmithing.

Inside the art building was a very large central hallway, lit in the dim greenish white of arc lights encased in translucent orange glass domes mounted to the walls. The hallway itself was very plain, with olivine tile floors and walls and ceilings of swirling off-white plaster. At the end of the entrance hallway was a T junction leading into the main portions of the building. When the group rounded the corner to the left, they were met with a series of large stone sliding doors on the left and right, labeled AB120-107.

A door on the left - AB113 - slid open with a gentle rolling sound, and a massive winged Monster cloaked in flame and scentless black smoke stomped into the hallway, wearing an old-fashioned frilly pink dress, long white gloves, and an enormous red flower in its 'hair' (really, more fire and smoke). It was carrying a huge platter of freshly baked cookies, labeled and separated into different mounds by flavor and common allergen groups.

"Cccoooookiess, anyonnne?", it said, in its deep, hollow, vaguely volcanic voice. It approached the group and offered the platter.

"Ah, Mal. I was wondering if you'd be here this year. Everyone, this is Professor Malovroch. Malovroch hosts the Tailoring and Blacksmithing classes, and periodically helps with Culinary and Geology classes. Take one cookie if you wish. Malovroch, perhaps you could show us around? I'm not as familiar with this building as I should be," Volkova said. The older woman was completely dwarfed by the Abyssal Fiend before them, but somehow still seemed more serious and dangerous. A number of students stepped forwards to take a cookie. Some of the students moved very quickly to the rear of the group at the sight of the Monster, clearly terrified by it and its overly casual mannerisms. Professor Brovak, who'd been silent the whole time, stepped forward and took three fudge cookies, two of which he stuffed into his belt pouch and the third he shoved between his facial bandages. The cookie half hung out of his face as he munched silently, and Volkova shot him a dirty look. "Mfwaht? I'mf nawt a schtudent, Ai ken dew mfwat Ai whantf."

"Don't speak with your mouth full, Brovak. You're setting a bad example for everyone here."

"Mmf. Gewd." Part of the cookie crumbles and falls out of his 'mouth' as he speaks, and he snatches the crumbs out of the air and shovels them between his bandages as well, leaving smears of black fudge on his 'face'.

"Pperrhapppppss I ccoooulld, Kittttty. Evveryonne, AB113 iss mmmmy pppersonnal offfficccce. It isss alllso a wwworrrkkshop, whhhiich yyooou arre frree to ussse whhhhen I thhheerrre," the ashen stone abomination said in as close to indoor volume as it could manage. It loudly stomped towards the open door once more and placed the tray of cookies on a shelf just inside the room. Inside the massive room were rows of work benches covered in various tools - hacksaws, band saws, circular saws, screwdriver kits, hammers and sledges of all sizes, sewing machines, sergers, leather stitching machines, wrenches, needles of many gauges, threads and wires, bolts of cloth, sheets of metal, boxes of common sizes of bolts and nuts, and even a welding machine with two long-hosed torches were in the room. There were twelve enormous solid tungsten tables in total, each with four heavy duty stools. At one end of the room is a large desk of solid tungsten sitting next to a large brick oven and a gigantic kitchenette. "Ttakkke a looookkk."

Malovroch closed the door after a while, and began stomping its way throughout the building, explaining each room in kind. Every single room had separate class uses, from fashion design to sewing to blacksmithing to engineering. "Upppstttaaairrs arre the cllaassssicccalll arrrtts. Pppainttiiing, pppottterrry, annd the llikke. I wwooullld sshow it ttooo yyoou alll, bbuutt the uppper llevells arre nnnott ablle to ssuppporrrtt mmmy... Bbiigg bbonnned nnaturre."

The beast seemed a little uncomfortable discussing its enormous size, but an explanation as to why they wouldn't be examining the upper levels seemed like the only right thing to do. Eventually, the group came to the exit at the northern end of the building, and when they left, they were met with a peaceful scene of smooth grasses and standard Unoctocan flowers, with a stone bridge crossing a small artificial creek that led from the jungle-like common area to their southeast towards a stream to their west across the road, which crossed over the creek with its own larger steel-supported bridge. Directly to the north were a series of three modest smooth clay sheds, one of which was marked "G-Billy" and appeared to be a tiny house. Windows in the fronts of the sheds suggested they were storerooms for quite literally hundreds of different pouches of plant seeds, with trays of seedlings along a shelf in one building and racks upon racks of gardening tools in both. The middle building had a larger shed door and housed the most expensive and modern adjustable riding lawnmower anybody had ever seen.

The Central Courtyard and the Research Institute

Brovak took Volkova's position at the head of the group. Malovroch stayed behind to tend to its office cleaning, but sent the group off with small 'goodie bags' full of healthier though less sweet biscuits. The group moved eastwards, and Brovak spoke in his usual long-winded manner as they walked, though considerably more seriously than before. He seemed to actually care about his job in this one situation. His voice seemed more strained than it had when he was chewing out Alexander earlier, though it was also somewhat more 'present' and less hollow. He was making a very clear effort to seem 'natural', even if his efforts did nothing to reduce his aura of unnaturalness and creepiness.

"We will be visiting the Research Institute next. Mind your step - the groundskeeper may not mind if you accidentally trample his gardens, but I will personally take offense if you increase his workload. Follow me."

As the group moved eastwards along a path north of the Billy's sheds, a series of four large buildings in a square was visible directly to their north, across a clean lawn of old-style green grass. There was a tunnel running through one of the building to a large, flat common area, through which were more plants and scenery similar to that of the common area between the Arts and Social Buildings they had just passed. A second creek full of smooth stones and small fish split the lawn in half and joined the creek from the A-S Commons before running under the road bridge to their west, and benches and small statues of historical figures were scattered along the creek's banks. A tiny wooden bridge crossed the creek halfway across the area, and ahead of the group to the east was another wide road. A chain of military transports drove northwards, with upper class military students watching the new students from their truckbeds.

Beyond the road was a large, flat square, with a circular courtyard in the middle and pathways crisscrossing from the Social and Arts Buildings to the northern end of the cafeteria, a path moving eastwards to a very long, tall, and intimidating building of ancient stonework with vaguely gothic architecture, and a fourth path moving northwards into a square-ish building of similar architecture with four towers in the corners and a central dome. The southwest tower of the northern building was taller than the rest and featured a large clock on each face, with a series of floodlights aimed in all directions. The other three towers had bells of various sizes, as well as skyward searchlights and, curiously, what would be immediately identifiable as a single roof-mounted anti-aircraft gun on each.

Brovak raised a hand to the traffic across the central road to halt it, and led the students across to the courtyard, the centerpiece of which was a circular pool and fountain filled with multicolored tiles, fishlike Monsters, and scattered Unoc one-Utan coins (the lowest coin denomination) across the bottom of the water. The fountain was in the shape of four gods of an ancient religion, each facing a cardinal direction, with Garrok, the ancient Sun God, facing east, Garvan, the ancient Night Troll (opposed to his brother Garrok) facing west, Kinash the six-armed Merchant facing south with his bags of gold and vegetables and animal furs, and Arkos the formless Titan facing northwards, represented by a star of white marble. Water poured forth from the mouths of each 'god'.

"This Fountain is older than any other thing at the Institute, and these grounds are often used for our various events and celebrations. To the North is the Library, which as you can see is the tallest building in the Institute. You will visit that later. To the South is the Food Services building, which you have already been to. To the East, where we're going, is the Research Institute. You will stay in a tight group when we enter, and say nothing. The Research Institute is where most of our magic-based classes are taught, and it is the second most common source of injuries at the Institute, after Laboratory One, which is further along. We will not be visiting Laboratory One on this tour for safety reasons."

A group of seven mixed humans and Chimeras in casual clothing pushed a cart covered in documents and papers out of the Research Institute's western entrance and descended a ramp, crossed the road, and moved westwards. They seemed to be headed to the Arts Building, where they would fabricate whatever abomination of an object they had just designed, for prototyping purposes. When they passed the group, some students would catch glimpses of a blueprint that appeared to be meant for a small one-man ballooncraft covered in propellers and small caliber cannons. When Brovak's tour group came to the building entrance, they mostly took the short flight of stairs, with some non-legged Monsters taking the ramp. The door was old and made of solid black stone, but swung smoothly despite its many written warnings and signs indicating magical hazards.

Inside, the hallways were almost sterile, with the same green-white glowing arc lights as were present in the Arts Building, though markings on the floor indicated a very clear and orderly path for students, as well as a marked path for carts of research materials in the middle of the hall. The hallway seemed to have more indicators of order than the average Imperial City road, and for good reason - here and there were splotches of stone that had been melted down in some accident at one point or another, and in places the ceiling was still freshly scorched. Empty carts were strewn about in a small alcove near the entrance, many of which were marked with a sign stating 'WARNING: VOLATILE MATERIALS' on the side.

"This building is my domain. You will follow all instructions on the signs as we visit, and I will not take responsibility for any accidents that may happen that may be your faults. Do not interfere with the carts, do not interfere with anybody you see in this building. Volkova and I will personally stop anybody from attempting to do so, and there will be no warnings before paralytic magics are applied for the safety of the group. If you screw up, you will be carried by the rest of the group for the remainder of the tour."

Different levels were dedicated to different classes and courses of study. The first floor was exclusively for small-scale laboratory work - chemistry, alchemy, biological engineering, and the like. The basement was for more "in-depth" hazardous work, and the elevator door for basement access included a magical lock that only responded when a passing mage flashed a badge in front of it. The tour group passed by it entirely.

"As first year students, the first floor is exclusively for moving to the upper levels, where our classes are held. The only reason I am showing you is so that none of you get any silly ideas of exploring this place. It isn't nearly as entertaining as you might think. Here, we have the elevators and stairs up to the second floor. RB-212 is my personal office, and RB-213 is my classroom, where you will all be spending considerable time this year. The third and fourth floors include the Monster Studies and biology classes, which some of you will also be taking."

After some time, they passed out the eastern exit to the building, which was almost identical to the western entrance. North of them were branches of the building moving eastwards, which suggested it was perhaps in a T, L, or F shape. Directly to the east was a large parking lot, sparsely populated by carriages and a stable, with more modern cars owned by staff members protected by magical barriers. Across the lot to the south and east respectively were two enormous square buildings, the southern of which had similar architecture to the Research Building and Library. The eastern was built in the same style as the Arts Building, though it was considerably more 'utilitarian'.

"To our east is Laboratory Two. The building to the south is Laboratory One, which is strictly off-limits. Laboratory Two has eight rooms on the first floor and sixteen in the basement. The basement laboratories are generally used by classes held in the Research Building, including mine, while all unoccupied and unused laboratories may be reserved for time slots ranging from one hour to one month by students and researchers, depending on their projects. You may reserve a laboratory room at the front desks at the Administrative Building, so long as you fill out the forms detailing the nature of your experiments."

The Athletics Compound

Administrator Malkin took his position at the head of the group alongside his granddaughter. Loud clicking and whirring from the massive crustacean were accompanied by his granddaughter's more human voice as the group moved westwards along the road to the north of the laboratories. "The Athletics Compound is just ahead, beyond the Armory, which you will visit on the third day during your introductory classes. The Athletics Compound is not related to any of our classes, but you're free to visit at any time."

The lobster man held up a claw to halt a "golf cart" (for lack of a better term - golf doesn't exist in this world), and guided the group across the road to the barebones, blue painted steel doors at the entrance to the Athletics Compound. The building was brick, seemingly squareish, and absolutely gigantic - and once the group entered, the size of the building was immediately justified. A blank, hardwood indoor sporting court with some bleachers along both walls took up the entirety of the southwest corner of the building, with racks of adjustable goals and various balls and other sporting gear resting in storage spaces beneath the bleachers. A hallway on the right wall, right next to the bleachers, curved to the north, deeper into the building. Boorkat only barely fit inside, and had to take his hat off lest it be knocked off by the ceiling.

"The indoor court may be rented out at any time. We don't have any official sporting teams here, but some of the fraternities and sororities play here sometimes. Down this hallway are the locker rooms and showers. The Monster locker room includes some amenities for students with different body compositions, including a sandblasting shower, acid washes, and the like, though you will need special permission to use those facilities. Beyond the locker rooms is the indoor swimming pool, which is open from 6:00 to 20:00."

Malkin turned a corner through another set of utilitarian doors, and before them lay a very large carpeted room with almost obscenely good ventilation. The room's grey carpet was very well trodden and visible paths were beaten into it, and various weight racks and exercise equipment filled the place to the brim. There were a few very 'unusual' pieces of equipment in the far northeast corner, which seemed to be based around twisting springs and flexible rubber pipes, and were obviously meant for some very, very unusual types of Monsters and Chimeras. One of the tube machines had a stylized image of a squid-man's face and was labeled BEARDMASTER 3210, with diagrams of facial tentacles being inserted into and flexing the rods. Other machines had similar odd functions and names and diagrams, but most were more 'normal' gear for humans.

"While there is no overseeing staff here, the Kio-Farat Fraternity has volunteered their time in shifts to act as spotters and help students with the equipment. When you're done with any piece of equipment, please clean the seat pads and grips using the spray bottles and paper towels mounted to the walls. We don't want anybody getting some sort of nasty infection in here."

Malkin moved back towards the exit and led the group back out of the building. "I would show you the pool, but it's only accessible through the locker rooms. The other doors are exit-only, and the janitor team have their own keys. Believe me when I say that it's a very nice swimming pool, though -- Competition sized and heated. On the other side of the building is the outdoor field and the running track, where occasionally we hold competitions. The track is open at all times, and includes a series of aerial hoops for flying students as well. Volkova, if you will..."

The Dormitory Quad

Immediately south of the Athletics Compound was the other side of the library - an imposing building, with a pair of ornate double doors to match its near-gothic architecture. "That is the library once again, as Brovak already explained. It is the centerpiece of the Institute, and where I spend most of my free time. We will not be exploring it today - you are free to enter at your leisure, and the librarians will help you find everything you need. The basements contain rooms where some of our long term residents research and translate old literature unearthed by archaeologists, as well as the Identification Services room, where you may have any unknown items checked for traces of magical energies without the risk of them being scrubbed clean by Foundation magics."

Volkova waved a hand towards the Library. It seemed to have several more floors this time than the last time the group saw it - the building was almost twisted in a way and almost seemed to change each time one blinked. Using Vision to check the Library building for magical energies would show that the place absolutely reeked of power, with spirals of smokelike energies oozing out from every single crack in the brickwork. She continued along the road westwards towards the cluster of four tightly linked buildings - seemingly separate, but they had long since been fused together at the ends. Like on the south end, there was a tunnel through the western building as well, which the group moved through. A pair of human-sized glass double doors on each side of the 'tunnel' led to a common room, an office, and a further hallway lined with doors - these were definitely dormitories. On the other side of the tunnel, the group came out to the almost jungle-like common area, which was almost similar to Groundskeeper Billy's personal garden between the Arts and Social Buildings, but was considerably more 'wild'.

"The dormitory to the north, Q4, is the Large Dormitory, and any and all Monsters and Chimeras too large to fit in 'standard' rooms will be housed there. The basement includes natural caverns for subterranean Monsters and the attic is effectively an aviary. Q3, the building we just moved through, has Small and Extra Small dormitories on the northern side, where undersized students may live comfortably. The south side of Q3 has private rooms for students with special requirements. Q2 to the South and Q1 to the West are both designed for 'standard' dormitories. Each dormitory consists of a living room with a kitchenette, and two bedrooms, one on each side of the dormitory room, and each with its own small personal bathroom. They're comfortable enough - I lived in one for four years when I was young and I enjoyed the place. This is the end of the tour. Feel free to eat your lunches while the Administrator gives you your instructions."

Dormitory Assignments

Boorkat's rapid assault of chirping almost caught his granddaughter off guard, and she rushed to keep up with her translations.

"You will now choose one roommate out of your group. Feel free to eat your lunches while you do so. There are a few rules in place though, for your safety and the safety of those around you. Monsters are not permitted to be the roommate of anybody with 'compatible' biology, which is to say, no 'female' Monsters may room with male humans and chimeras and vice-versa, and no Monsters that reproduce via more 'invasive' means are permitted to room with anybody other than similar Monsters. If you'd like to know more about it, ask one of the RAs while you're moving in. They've got all sorts of horrible stories about those kinds of accidents."

Boorkat whipped out a stack of papers, which included a list of students who were present at the opening ceremony. A few students were missing from the list, including Mycona Frisa. At the bottom of each paper were two signature and date lines, and brief instructions stating that students should pass the roommate request form back to the Administrator once they've chosen a partner, as well as instructions stating that students who don't get a roommate will be assigned one.

Mycona Frisa

Although he had not confirmed that he was in fact a friend, Mycona had deduced that this man was indeed a friend. Mother had told her that when she found a friend, they would help explain things she didn't understand to her. This man was going to great lengths to explain what he had said, so clearly he had to be a friend. Mycona was relieved to know she had finally found one. She had tried asking so many others, and not one had said yes. Now she could finally get the answers to all the questions that were coursing through her head. There were so many questions going through her head right now.

However, she would patiently await the end of the friend's spiel on alcohol, oblivious to his nervousness or true intentions. Perhaps fortunately for him, Mycona noticed when the announcement was made for everyone to stop eating and follow Volkova. Arising from her seated position without a care in the world, Mycona told the friend, "We must go now." and left to join the others. As much as she would rather receive answers from the friend, mother also told her to listen to instructions from the "staff", and she had deduced that these people were giving instructions and must be staffs.

Mycona did not understand a lot of what happened next. They went to a lot of different places, they stopped to look at them, and they spoke to some people. It was all quite interesting to Mycona, but she did not understand all of the words used. Mycona wanted to stop them to ask more, but mother had told her not to interrupt people while they were speaking, and the staffs were doing a lot of speaking. There were occassions while following that she wanted to stop them to ask, but she couldn't always get past all the others to say something. There were so many others around, and sometimes to lost track of who was there, including the friend.

Eventually, they all came to a stop, and Mycona was handed a bunch of papers. From what Mycona actually understood, they were to choose someone to be their mate in their room. Mycona had learned that "mate" was a "synonym" for friend, and so the choice seemed obvious to her. She did not understand what they were talking about in relation to "monsters" and "humans" and "chimeras". Mother had told her there would be different kinds of others, but she did not know which was which. All she knew was that she was Mycona, and that the friend was around here somewhere. After a period of looking around, Mycona found the friend again, and said to him, "My name is Mycona. What is your name?" She had not learned the friend's name before, but she knew everyone had one, Mother had told her that. She understood from the form that they were to sign the name of their roommate, so she needed to know his to write it down. She was completely unaware of the fact that she had in fact been excluded from the list, nor was she aware of the potential that the friend may not agree to being her roommate.

Berke Bayamaar

"Oh, uh, well..." Berke was about to answer Mark's question before more quarrels broke out. He would have said that he was open to doing so, because while he had not made up his mind to become a soldier after graduating, it wasn't something he was completely opposed to. While killing on the battlefield hardly appealed to him, he knew from back home that sometimes people were needed to guard their homes with weapons in their hands. A soldier's ultimate duty was to defend his home, and so it had a certain appeal to him. Still, he had yet to truly think about it at length. There was certainly no time to either respond or think about it more, as said quarrel had broken out, and both Berke and Mark seemed equally concerned with it, though likely for vastly different reasons.

It seemed some Chimera had caused a stir by saying something offensive. Now some girl was attempting to fight and intimidate him. Berke had no love of offensive words, but he did not like to resort to violence either. He wanted to say something, but he had never been the best at forcing his way between two people fighting. He always wanted to, but sometimes he could not find the right words. Fortunately, he did not have to, as somebody else decided to employ their powers to diffuse the tension. Their actions were technically provocative in of themselves, but it seemed they were used to prevent the girl from assaulting anyone, so it was okay by Berke. Eventually, the whole conflict was shut down by the staff, much to Berke's relief. To think there would be so much potential fighting on the first day of their new lives. Berke was going to have a heart attack if things carried on like this.

After everything calmed down, the announcement for the tour to begin followed shortly after. "Uh, we should probably go now..." Berke said gingerly to Mark. He would have waited to walk with his new friend, but he seemed caught up in an internal conundrum, so Berke made tracks without waiting. He not only did not wish to fall behind, but he also figured he should leave Mark to his own devices. Whatever he was tossing up with in his own head, Berke did not wish to interrupt him. The tour for one was informative and interesting. Berke was glad to learn that they basically had all kinds of facilities for the students to enjoy. Berke himself was sure to make good use of the athletic facilities himself. As strong as he was by virtue of his ancestry, he still needed to do work to maintain his form. He also really needed to work on his poor mobility. Right now, he was like a big, lumbering beast, which was not only detrimental in the long run, but also a bad stereotype for his people.

Once they received the roommate application papers, Berke realised he had only one real choice. Berke barely knew Mark, but he did know his name at least, which was more than he could say for anyone else. Ultimately, he would be happy with anyone, but if he was to choose, he may as well choose the one person he could ask without it seeming too strange. "Uh, Mark?" He said, approaching his new friend. "I know we don't know each other too well, but I was wondering if you wanted to be my roommate? If that's okay with you?" The last thing Berke wanted to do was feel like he was forcing him to shack up with him. It was absolutely okay with him if Mark didn't want to, but he had to ask.

Magnhild had completely tunnel visioned on her noodles as a myriad of conflicts happened around her. Allowing such food to go cold would be a sin in her eyes. But something else caught her attention.. Somehow.. The scent of curry wafted in her direction as another student sat down near her. A human student. It seemed that the girl wasn't bothered by the presence of the three Chimera that had gathered to this table, and thankfully so. The Pangolin didn't need anymore drama.. Not that much had happened from her perspective. Magnhild subconsciously moved closer to the human girl with the curry, slowly scooting over seat by seat. She had already finished her noodles, but she still had a spoon in her hand. She soon found herself steadily aiming her spoon at the plate of delicious smelling curry. Her mind blanked for a moment, and then a voice rang out from a megaphone, announcing the end of Breakfast.

"Uhm.." was all that escaped her mouth as she realized what she was about to do. She cleared her throat and promptly got up from her seat, her face slightly red from embarrassment. She was quick to let go of such a feeling as she reasoned that there was nothing to be done about it. Move on. And move on she did, rejoining the group as they continued their tour.

For the most part, the tour was like a blur to Magnhild; but she tried to take mental notes of as many things as possible. However, the social building didn't sound like a place she'd like to hang around for too long, especially not with random falling objects. As they made their way round the Art building, one of the sliding doors opened as a massive... thing? Walked out with trays of cookies. They smelt really good. Even though some of the students moved to the rear of the group, Mag stepped forward, taking one of the cookies. She was tempted to take more, but that might be a little rude. She'll definitely come back here later.

They soon came to the Central Courtyard, which was possibly the most extravagant, yet beautiful thing Magnhild had ever laid her eyes on that wasn't food. Some might say she had some weird taste in art, but she just simply likes what she sees. She didn't know what any of these statues actually represented, but she could appreciate good craftsmanship.

As the group walked on, the chimera was started to feel a little bored, her mind wandering off somewhere, causing her to almost walk into someone. Fortunately it wasn't anyone holding some dangerous experiment. What she got from Brovak's explanation was:
'The science building is dangerous, don't go anywhere other than the classrooms upstairs.' Simple enough. Mag wasn't about to break the rules within her first few days of coming to this place.

While the Pangolin was never much for sports, she felt as though she could get into something like swimming. She always liked floating around on the water.. Unless that's not what people do in pools. she made it a point to come here to try the pool, since she'd never been in one before, since lakes were the only thing near her hometown.

After what felt like an eternity, the tour finally ended with a explanation of the Dorm layout, something probably more important than other things mentioned on the walk. Due to her rather isolated upbringing and general lack of education, Magnhild had very little understanding of what 'compatible biology' was, but she merely accepted the rules as they were. Girls and boys can't be in the same room. That's it.

However, the 'choosing' of a roommate was somewhat difficult for her. She wasn't entirely sure who to even ask. The chimera stared at her sheet for a moment before looking up at the group. It would seem that some people had already decided on who they'd be with. She internally shrugged and decided to see if someone would approach her, otherwise she'd just leave it up to the teachers to figure that out for her. Thus she decided to go have lunch, before handing the paper into the Administration.

Off to the cafeteria once more!

Mark's hand rested on his chin, with his thumb and index finger shooting out to form an L shape. It was a habit subconsciously picked up from comics, and acted as an idle pose during periods of intense thought. One of the only occasions in which he displayed competence was during battle analysis, but so far he had learned nothing. He was already familiar with the Breckenridge lineage to an unhealthy degree from their many, many newspaper appearances and no one else had used magic. Just caution and words. And that sheep chimera who gave in so easily! He was frustrated from the lack of intel, but fired up beyond belief seeing that his fellow classmates obviously needed a coach like him to help them maximize their strength.

The announcements and their ringing intercepted his speeding train of thought and found themselves flattened by the thought process of a stubborn dog who loves the sound of alarms. After finally loosening his muscles he stood up and followed, awkwardly attempting to lower the formality in his walk now that he saw the casual way others followed the professors. "VERY WELL THEN, I WILL ADAPT."

As soon as his brain registered the sight of the athletic compound Mark's tail transformed into a brown blur. All of the equipment he could ever dream of was in front of him, and even a few that he couldn't dream of were scattered around as well. He fixated on the standard pieces of equipment that made frequent appearances during training montages. The bench press in the distance looked exactly like the one Unoctoman used before his big fight with against the Deadland Daemon. Mark clenched his right fist and closed his eyes as he remembered what he said to his trainee, moments before risking his life for the good of the people: "I am the Octoman and I Octocan".

The last stop was just as exciting. Mark's passion extended to literature, and the sight of so many books in one place was mind-blowing. His attempts at maintaining a straight and stiff posture were once again toppled by the visible excitement transmitted by his tail. Afterwards, it waned as he realized that he was unsure of who to select as a roommate. The effect of being a social person who had spent his entire life with the same group of people resulted in a strange moment of weakness. He couldn't remember a time when he ever experienced this and the whole wave of emotion felt like a child trying alcohol. Necessary bitterness? Awareness of a discomfort that would happen often later? It was interrupted by his first official friend, Berke.

Berke's visible feelings of uncertainty registered in Mark's mind, and the urge to use his power-enhanced dynamic coaching system rose. While his powers only affected their target's abilities, a combination of feeling stronger and the placebo effect from Mark's speeches would beef up his target's confidence and security immensely. Not even Mark was aware that half of his powers weren't real. His own worries were quashed as soon as the need to guide another person was created. "I WILL ACCEPT YOUR REQUEST WITH MUCH EXCITEMENT, BERKE. MAY WE GROW FROM EACHOTHER." His hand shot up to salute a fellow warrior before immediately stopping and transforming into a handshake. He would have to act "casual" from time to time and even engage in acts of "friendship" in order to create new bonds. Berke was perfect to start off with, since Mark had already created a superhero persona for him. As Mark's calloused hand extended to reach his new roommate, he fantasized about Berke the Berserk launching a vehicle at another vehicle and somehow exploding an entire city. Poor Berke.

Bawen Coridell & Emilya Vance

FlitterFaux & @ghastlyInc

Emilya exited through the cafeteria doors, holding them open for Bawen. She guided the boy to the opposite side of the building the other student had stormed off toward. She hoped she would not have to interfere there. Shaking her head Emilya took a good look at Bawen, toes to head, lingering on his eyes. She didn't like what she saw; his posture, body language, and expressions alone told a sad story she hoped she was wrong about. After a few silent moments she spoke, her tone neutral, almost conversational. Her eyes never left his.

"How is your father?"

Bawen frowns, considering the question, and its odd air of loadedness. "He is well." He says, deciding the simplist response is the safest. "Am I to presume you know him personally or simply through reputation?" he added, preparing to correct whatever misconceptions she may have about the Coridell family methods.

"Personally." Emilya noted Bawen's caution, but wasn't yet sure if that caution was bourne of concern for the family reputation or something else. "Though I haven't seen him in... a decade or so, now? He never mentioned having a son, but I may be acting presumptuous, thinking he'd tell me something personal like that. Still, I was surprised to hear your name." She paused, watching the boy's eyes carefully and offering him a chance to speak if he so chose. Her expression was much gentler now then it had been earlier.

There is a small flash of suprise across the chimera's face for a moment, but it is quietly squashed. It was rare for him to meet someone who knew his father outside of professionally. Harkin Coridell, for all his virtues, was not a man who had many friends. "The estate has been very busy since the war. More so since the empire decided to not accept us as a protectorate." He says. "And it is unsuprising. He was not fully aware of my existence until after the war. I was not formally granted the name until seven years ago. He has another, if you are any way interested. With any luck, Young Master Dorill will be in your lecture halls before too long." He adds, remebering with some mild amusement how excited his brother was when he heard Bawen would be attending school.

Emilya nodded as Bawen spoke. "I see, that makes sense then." She caught something like a brief sparkle in his eyes when he first spoke of his younger brother, Dorill, and she smiled at that. "I look forward to meeting him then. However, for the moment..." She let her smile fall away before she continued. "...I would like to focus on you." She paused briefly again, giving Bawen another opportunity to speak.

The chimera gives Emilya a curiuos look. A somewhat more difficult task than he thought it would be, considering their height difference. But more pressingly, she seemed to be acting strangely friendly for what, he had assumed, to be a dressing down of his behavior in the cafeteria. "In what regard ma'am?" He asks, voice once again going flat as he prepared for an assumed verbal ambush.

Emilya spoke gently and tried to come across as non threatening, sensing Bawen was withdrawing into himself. "It's all right. I've already made it clear what the school's views on certain behaviors are. I just want you to tell me, in your own words, what exactly happened. Start to finish please."

Bawen relaxes a little, grunting in confirmation. There is an awkward moment of silence as he collects his thoughts on what had transpired in the cafeteria. "Simply put, it was rather harmless initally." He begins, "I ran afoul of a rather...unpalletable student. Condemed him for his poor public behavior and sat down else where. Apparently the young lady was disturbed by our outburst and was polite enough to bring her discomfort to my attention." He pauses for a moment, confusion marring his face. "Then the young man apparently felt I needed his assitance for some reason. I believe he used magic to deter her, but to be honest it caught me off guard as much as her. As for the other chimera.... Luke Anus? I think he was just looking to fight something." Quietly, the sheep boy manages to grumble something about 'filthy blooded barbarian', though it's doubtful that was part of his testimony.

Emilya did not need magic to see that Bawen's perception and values were skewed, alarmingly so. Listening to what he said and how he said it she could tell he saw nothing wrong with the racially charged insult he had used. If she was reading him correctly he also saw nothing wrong with the actions of the two Brovak had dealt with. However, watching as carefully as she was, Emilya did not miss the subtle expressions on Bawen's face as he spoke of any other chimera.

This boy clearly viewed chimera as being inferior to humans, and for her it was no mystery as to where he might have gotten such an idea. She raised an eyebrow at the butchering of the other student's name but made no comment. More concerning was his muttered comment he had failed to keep entirely to himself. She considered her next words carefully.

"Why do you think so many reacted so strongly as quickly as they did in that situation? Please explain as thoroughly and as accurately as you can."

"People generally take exception when people scream about the fellowship of soldiers in public with all the subtly of a dying star." He says, flatly. "Especially when it comes from someone who should know better. That said, I was probably not as quiet in chastising him as I should have been."

Emilya was silent for a long moment, partially lost in old memories and partially assessing Bawen's thought process. "Tell me, if it had been a human doing the shouting would you have reacted any differently? What would you have said in such a case?"

"Forgoing the fact that a human wouldn't behave in such a manner..." He begins, crossing his arms and considering the question for a few moments. "I likely would have said nothing. To do so in such a situation would would be beyond my station. But as I said..." He huffs for emphasis, the noise bleeding over into a subtle breathless trill. "It is a moot point. A human would not have debased themselves in such an incredible display of cognitive impairment."

At that Emilya felt she understood the situation more than adequately. Her expression became notably sad and she looked at the ground briefly as unpleasant life lessons came to mind. "Bawen Coridell. I have witnessed far more disgraceful behavior from humans. From my own brother. From myself." She locked eyes with the boy as she continued. "Even from your own father. Do you honestly think humans are above chimera?"

Bawen stared at her silently for a moment, face flat and composed. He had been concerned this line of questioning was going somewhere uncomfortable, though now the woman's goal seemed crystal clear to him. He had to commend the professor; he hadn't been expecting her to test him like this so early.
"Absolutely." He says, voice ringing with a confidence that could have only come from practice. "Our origin is deplorable nor are we in any way a natural inhabitant of this planet. There is no conclusion to draw but inferiority. One need only observe the fact that subsequent generations of halfbreeds trend towards human features. If one can look upon a seventh generation chimera and not draw the logical conclusion that humanity is the optimal form for sentient life, then there is no helping them." He adds with a small puff of pride.

Emilya's face barely twitched before becoming unreadable. She had heard almost those exact words before, and they had the same effect now as the first time she'd heard them.

"Have you ever considered the possibility that your father may be wrong about humans and chimeras?"

"Occasionally the idea strikes me. But normally I'm able to see reason after a few minutes of self reflection." He adds primly. "It cant be helped really, considering I am one. The bias comes naturally."

Emilya shook her head slowly and sighed. There was a lot of deeply rooted damage, more than she could handle alone. Years of this one idea that chimera were inferior being drilled into the boy's head would not be easy to heal.

"The tour will be starting any moment now, so we'll have to shelf this conversation for the moment. However, if you need to talk I'll make myself available. I am going to need to send you to a friend of mine. Her name is Leonora Serannen, and she's a staff member here at the Institute as well. You need help Mr. Coridell, and I believe Miss Serannen can provide that help. I'm afraid I must insist you see her regularly, at least once a week. Is this understood?"

Bawen frowned, tempted to object to the order, but he nodded obediently. "Very well Professor. Though I fail to see the need for additional staff assistance." He says tone once again flat so to not risk further offense. "Nor as to why I specifically need help. But if it will put you at ease, consider it done ma'am." He elects to remain silent as they continued, now thoroughly confused.

"I hope in time these things will become clear to you." Emilya reached up and placed a hand on Bawen's shoulder. She looked about to say something else when the doors to the cafeteria opened and the students began pouring out. Hans also emerged, a concerned look on his face.

She retracted her hand, albeit reluctantly, and adopted her usual professional demeanor. "It seems we're out of time for the moment. Please rejoin the group Mr. Coridell. And remember to check your comments before voicing them."

Emilya stepped away from Bawen letting him rejoin the group. Hans walked slowly to her, but did not say a word when he caught sight of the subtle look in his sister's eyes. Instead he stood next to her silently, waiting for the students to pass by. For her part Emilya kept her expression in check enough that she did not disturb anyone that looked her way. She took note of the other students involved in the incident and was satisfied to see their attitudes were acceptably subdued for now. As the last students passed by the pair hung back.

"Emilya?" Hans asked at last.

The tiny professor's facade of self restraint fell and she glared darkly in the direction of the tour group, though her actual feelings were not directed towards anyone present. Her fists clenched as she began to explain. "That was Harkin Coridell's boy. Fight nearly broke out thanks to some racially charged comment from the boy... directed at another young chimera over some apparently loud and obnoxious behavior, but otherwise...

"Ah, I see now. Harkin. So he couldn't escape the old man's poison in the end. With luck maybe the boy at least can escape the cycle."

"Luck, and a lot of work. Too many students coming to us damaged these days. I think I need to pay our old friend a visit.

"Ah, you two always were an inch from eachothers throats half the time. Please don't make it personal if you can help it."

"It's not about me and Harkin, Hans. Well, not primarily. It's about the boy. Bawen Coridell."

L'ilisht

It was probably hard to miss the seven-foot chimera that seemed to ignore the presence of every other living thing in the Institute so far.

Every other living thing, except Professor Malovroch. L'ilisht's heart nearly broke when he saw the Monster professor, mostly because he had no clue that she was actually a Monster. Must be horrible, to live looking like that. I'm no looker myself, but she...it's...hideous. The cookie was nice though. Bit small for somebody of his size, really, but that was to be expected from food made for humans.

Humans. His mind wandered back to the fight earlier in the cafeteria, where everybody decided to play the hero or something. That dumb human girl trying to teach a self-hater a lesson on the worth of life by insulting the worth of his life? Was she expecting him to miss the irony of a chimera insulting another chimera? Did she simply not understand the frequency of self-hatred in their kind?

It didn't matter in the end, really. The fight was broken up with a few more (pointless and likely unenforceable) threats, some people got in trouble, and everybody else went on their way. The tour was as informative as a quick tour could be, though L'ilisht was certainly interested in Malovroch's blacksmithing class. His armor and sword were rather standard, and if there was a way he could possibly combine his strengthening magic and the smithing process to create armor that permanently maintained its enhanced state, she...it...they?...Malovroch would likely be the one to know.

It was the last bit that annoyed him. Roommates. Would he really have to suffer living with somebody else for his entire tenure here? There wasn't a chance in the Deadlands that he'd be able to find some other form of accommodation, as that would cost money he didn't have. He highly doubted he'd be able to convince anybody he had any situation that required him to live alone. An existential hatred for social interaction probably wouldn't cut it with the professors.

As it was, he just...stood there. A displeased look on his face, papers in his hand, as he mentally prepared himself for whoever would be dumb or masochistic enough to try to approach him.

If he couldn't get into the large dorms, he'd prefer to at least have an idea of what he was getting himself into.

Bawen

Bawen spent the tour mostly in silence, quietly hanging near the back of the group to avoid any more conversations. Most of the tour did little to interest him. The Social and Arts building were, to him, an utter waste of his time, not that he'd verbalize this. He saw little point in furthering any tutelage beyond what concerned his magical education. If they were insisting on wasting his time with 'general' education, then what had been the point of all his studying up to this point. The fact that art building was home to....that thing, did little to sweeten his expression, though he managed a polite 'no thank you' to the cookie offer.

The athletics building held equally little value to him, but he couldn't really argue against it. Magic was, regretfully, as much a physical art as it was a mental one. And while he was not exactly the peak of physical conditioning, his father spared no expense in making sure Bawen had exceptional stamina. He'd have to come back later and figure out when the pool or tracks were open, preferably free from other people as well.

However, what was troubling the chimera more than anything else at the moment was the dreaded 8 by 11 in piece of paper currently gripped in his hands. Roommate. The word itself filled him with equal parts disgust and anxiety. Asking a human would be...Well. It was no option he was willing to explore.

A chimera or monster would be preferable, but that came with the issue of having to live with one of the creatures. Even at home, his family had been considerate enough to ensure he had a separate bathroom from his mother (and everyone else in the house for that matter). And while he was not a frequent sleeper, he'd much rather be alone than have a half breed (like himself, he quietly reminds himself) leering over him.

He sighs as he sits down in what he assumes to be the 'chimera' section of the cafeteria. He didn't feel like eating, the morning had spoiled any appetite he had for the next day or two. Perhaps he could just explain he couldn't find a roommate. Random assignment at least held the vain hope of being alone. “But knowing my luck...” He grumbles, turning to dully watch a chimera (bug, he guessed. Though the compound eyes gave it away) enter, “I'd be stuck with that loud mouth. Or worse. The upstart...”

A sudden burst of noise draws his attention, and Bawen quickly snaps his head around to see said loud mouth proudly claiming another chimera as his roommate. Bawen leered at the two of them, but kept quiet, not wanting a repeat performance. ”With all the noise he's making you'd think the gorilla just asked for his hand in marriage...” he huffs, quietly thanking whatever deity had stepped in and taken HIM of all people out of the potential roommate pool.
.....Though he would admit, they DID make a cute couple.

Every spoon of curry that went into Rikka her mouth had to have a satisfied smile and sound with it. This was very good curry, it was mild flavored and perhaps one of the best curries she had ever gotten, that might have mostly had to with the fact that she came from a remote place instead of a city. They had two dinners in her town so she didn't even know what most of these dishes were suppose to be after having quickly scammed over them. Having chosen curry to not make it so difficult for herself she had not expected it to be better then her mom's curry. She would have cried about how good the curry was but decided not too seeing how many people were around her and didn't want to come off as a weirdo. Rikka suddenly thought back about one of the latest books she had read, it was about a food school where only the best of the bestest chefs could learn. Every dish was so good that it made them orgasm. This was one of these dishes, an explicit scene went by in her room seeing herself in one of these scenes. She blushed for a moment and shook her head not to think about it like that.

Speaking about it, Rikka turned her head a few times as she still had spoon in her mouth. Her mouth slowly opened as she timidly moved the spoon out of her mouth while it kept itself open. Everyone had left. There was no single soul left in the cafeteria. Rikka broke out a look of panic as she stood up and slammed her hands onto the table. Her head looked over twice more to see that really everyone had left. The cafeteria staff was cleaning up the food behind the counter but furthermore the cafeteria was empty. The cleaning crew had not entered yet so they couldn't be far.

Rikka hastily put her tray at the cleaning counter of the cafeteria and turned towards one of the two big doors of the cafeteria. It was one of the two she her chances were only half half. Rikka quickly stormed out of the room back into the hallway. After turning a corner she was met by the large back of one of the male characters of this roleplay. Rikka bumped against Alexander his back and was flung back onto her butt. She looked pained for a moment as she rubbed her butt but was quick to stand up on her own again and gave Alex a deep bow of apology. She gave a troubled look at Alex with her hands clasped together in front of her chest hoping that he was not hurt or the likes.

Alexander had lagged behind as the large group of students were escorted past him on the beginning of the Institute's tour. He was hoping to stay out of the way until he finished his cigarette, in an attempt to avoid the group of student's unintentional exposure to his second-hand smoke. Prior to this however, he had made momentary eye contact with the women who soon announced that breakfast was over, and the tour was beginning.

He had nearly extinguished and thrown away the butt of his cigarette when he heard quickly approaching footsteps, followed almost immediately by the form of a significantly shorter woman crashing into his back. Given how small she was comparatively, Alex barely stumbled as she recoiled off of him towards the ground. He attempted to swing around and catch her, but was far too slow and far too clumsy to do anything but fall himself. If it were not for how quickly his arms moved out below him, he likely would have fallen directly on top of her. As it were however, he had managed to brace himself, his arms planted on either side of her.

A blush nearly consumed his face as he recognized how particularly close together they had fallen, and the significantly uncouth pose they had accidentally created. He quickly righted himself and stood, offering a hand of assistance she clearly did not need, as she was already standing before him and bowing in apology. In his uncertainty of what to do, he decided it best to mimic the girl, and found himself bowing in response.

Then, as she clasped her hands in front of her chest and looked at him, Alex felt his blush pulse gently. "Are you alright?" He asked, taking precautions not to make any eye-contact. "It looked like you fell pretty hard."

Rikka swiftly moved her hands in front of her face in reaction to defending herself from the boy that was gonna crush her in matter of seconds. She firmly closed her eyes as she expected a big hit but, there didn't seem to be anything happening. Rikka slowly moved her hands away from her face again and softly opened her eyes to take a peek. She was met by two greenish eyes rather close to hers. A warm pant left her lips in terror to what was happening, her eyes widening. Rikka felt her heart beat faster, they were so close. Rikka turned her head the other way to make herself more at ease for them being so close together and waited for him to stand up first. She was quick to follow.

Some awkwardness, a bow and troubled look later they were standing one over another both blushing to what had just happened. Rikka had her head lowered but her eyes clearly directed at his lips. She felt sorry for having troubled him so much, she should at least make that clear to him. His lips parted, she followed his every lip move until he was finished. Rikka shifted her joined hands towards her lap and gave a confirming nod at him that she was fine. He spoke once more telling her that he thought it looked quite painful. Rikka tilted her head up a little bit more as she poked her hands to the front and waved them both around while she also shook her head in denying manner.

Quickly her head turned toward a bag that was hanging from her neck leaning on her hip as her hands tried to open it as quickly as possible to jank a notebook out of her bag. She opened it to the first page and wrote in it in somewhat bigger letters.

'No, no, it doesn't hurt so much. I'm fine really :)'

Rikka held up the notebook with both hands towards his head and displayed an awkward smile out from behind the notebook.

Alex tried desperately to ignore it, but he could feel her eyes on his lips and it did little to help ease the reddening of his cheeks. His face had gone so red that even the bags under his eyes were beginning to blend with the rest of his facial features, and the focus she had on his lips only amplified the amount of blood that rushed to his cheeks.

At first, nothing seemed amiss. She had nodded to confirm that she was alright, which was a common enough response, but her response to his statement caused him to raise an eyebrow. It was as she wrote that he realized why she had been staring at his lips, and his face was reddened from the embarrassment of his stupidity, rather than the situation he was in. After patiently waiting for her to finish writing, and reading what she had to say, he brought his right hand up to his face.

He pointed to the girl in front of him, then raised his eyebrows to make it clear he was asking a question. He then tapped his chin, then cheekbone with his extended finger, then pointed back to her, signing "Are you deaf?" as he spoke the words slowly, making sure his lips could easily be read.

While he wasn't fluent, his mother had been a nurse, which required her to know sign-language well enough to discuss medical issues. In their time together, she had taught Alex a fairly significant amount of general sign-language. Enough to be able to hold a conversation, at the least.

After Rikka had held out her notebook to him she was met by a few signing gestures from the boy. He was asking her if she was deaf. Rikka looked a him a little baffled from the fact he actually knew sign language. This first person she had met on this school actually knew sign language, she could jump a hole in the sky right now. Rikka her mouth opened up to a big smile as she gave two big nods towards the guy as she hastily put away her notebook in her bag again not even giving it the time to close up her bag.

She pointed at him and moved her curled hand towards her forehead touching her forehead with the tips of her fingers then rotated her hands in windmill like fashion with her index fingers out. Shaped both hands like L's with her index fingers and thumbs firstly having both L's touch before moving them to both sides in waving manner. She seemed thrilled to speak with someone else in sign laungage seeing how she was moving her hands a bit fast.

'Do you know sign language?'

Alex was momentarily stunned at how quickly she signed, she was at least four times faster than his mother had ever been. He stuck out his left arm and touched his fingertips together, then he drug the fingertips of his right hand up the top of his forearm, "Slow Down."

Taking a moment to register her movements, he used his right hand to display a sort of elongated pinch with his index finger and thumb; "A little bit."

Oh yea he wasn't a fluent signer like she had expected. Rikka showed An awkward smile at him as she rubbed the back of her head in awkward manner. She had gotten a bit too excited with having someone to talk too without any tools. It was kind of fun seeing how he was still a slow poke in signing but atleast he had taken the time to learn at least something. Rikka flashed him a bright smile with another nod before signing back at him at a slower pace.

'I can read your lips. Follow my signing. I can write too?'

Seeing how he was still an apprentice she had chosen to do short signs and even asked him to take it easy by just talking and or go back to writing instead. Rikka waited a moment for his response as she thought of her next lines. Her eyebrows jumped up as she though about how they didn't know each other's names yet.

At this, Alex shook his head no, before taking a moment to recall the signs he wished to perform. First he tapped his chest with his index finger, then he used his index finger to create a hooked shape (similar to the signed "X," although his thumb is not tucked into his palm), and bent his hand downwards at the wrist, twice. Finally, he held his left hand out with his palm facing upwards and his fingers extended, then used his right hand to mimic the action of picking something up, then, he touched the fingers of his right hand to his temple, signing; "I need to learn."

'My name is.''

She gently took his hand and wrote letters on it as she spoke them silently with her lips so that he could easily decipher what she was trying to say to him.

'Rikka'

'What is your name?'

She let go of his hand again and asked for his name this time.

At being given her name, Alex nodded and repeated "Rikka" aloud. He then tapped his chest with an open palm, followed by making a fist with his palm facing Rikka. He then, nervously and gently, took her hand and attempted to spell his name without his fingers shaking too much. Effectively signing "My name is Alex."

His hands were incredibly soft, despite the thick calluses covering them from his work with both weapons and gardens, and noticeably warmer than most would expect. However, due to his nervousness, they were also a bit damp, which did little to help the embarrassed blush that was returning to his cheeks. After telling the girl his name, he stood there for a moment unsure of what to do, his eyes finally making contact with hers; intentionally, at least.

The boy repeated her name with her lips after she was done drawing, it was a success since he seemed to know her name now.

The boy did the same back to her, took her hand and wrote his name on her hand, it tickled an awful lot but she kept her serious attitude seeing how the boy was trembling a bit and seemed rather nervous about the whole situation, she didn't want to make him any more insecure than he already was. Rikka followed his lips while he was drawing on her hand and came to know that his name was Alex. Rikka gave a short nod that she got his name.

Rikka took his hand again that was hanging by his side and shook it while showing him a kind smile. She let go off it again a few seconds later and continued signing again.

'Are you a first year too?'

Her face showed a moment of shock when she seemed to suddenly recall something rather important, she looked further down the hallway past the boy in terror and turned her head to look behind her as well. She started signing at him rather swiftly again.

'Where did all the other students go?'

Alex was on the verge of signing back a response to her first question before he noticed the sudden look of panic on the girl's face. He watched as she looked around frantically, and a pang of anxiety rang out in his chest as he was faced with the same realization as her. There were no students anywhere to be seen, they must have gone along with the tour.

He watched her sign quickly, and although he missed at least one or two of the words, he got the general idea of what she was conveying. Looking around, he decided to use his abilities again; although this time, he doubted he would be caught.

He gestured for her to wait a moment, before closing his eyes and concentrating. The red bags under his eyes seemed to glow faintly, although it would be hard to notice given the current lighting. He reached outward, feeling around for a clusters of nerves. He felt a small cluster relatively close to him, which he assumed belonged to Rikka, as well as the occasional cluster of a worker or cleaner. Then, he found what he was looking for, an enormous sea of nerves and bodies, all packed close together. Opening his eyes, he made two fists with his thumbs pointing up, one behind the other. He moved both of his fists forward simultaneously, towards Rikka, as he spoke aloud.

"Follow me."

He waited for a moment, making sure she understood him, before him began walking towards the group of Students which were currently grouped before three buildings. He looked around for the speaker, and after locating her quickly noticed a chimera to her side, signing a translation of the speaker's monologue. Tapping Rikka's shoulder gently, he pointed the translator out; after all, he wasn't certain just how far she could accurately read lips.

With Rikka still in blind panic she almost wanted to run off to find the group of students on her own before Alex told her to give him a moment. The boy turned away from her and used some sort of magic that helped him find the group of students. Curiously Rikka tried peering at his face getting closer and closer to him. He turned back around with her being fairly close now where as she stumbled back a bit as her face showed a clear look of shock. She placed a hand on her chest and took a breath as she let out an awkward chuckle. Alex was already singing at her again and moved his lips to say that she had to follow him. Rikka seemed a little surprised at how he knew where the students were but didn't question it for now. They were back with the group again so she was happy enough that she didn't miss anything from the tour.

Once arriving they had been going at it for a bit now already, everyone was full fixated on the two at the front who seemed to be speaking about the buildings and stuff. Rikka squinted for a moment while she pushed herself up with her toes so she could look above the others but discovered that she was still way too short. It was even hard to see the face of the person talking from all the way back here. Rikka dropped down onto both feet again as she looked around for a way around the large group blocking a large portion of the area. A light tapping was annoying her shoulder. She made a swift turn looking at Alex again with a questioning look. He made her look at the person that was a bit smaller then the speaker that was obviously frantically moving their hands around to keep up with the speaking of the teacher. Rikka took a moment before a smile was put on her face. They got someone to translate for them. Fixated fully on the translator she walked around the group a bit till she could see the translator a bit better and finally could see what was being explained. Rikka turned back at Alex for a moment and displayed her gratitude.

'Thank you!'

It wasn't often that Joseph was treated to dinner and a show. Although the dog thing didn't go anywhere interesting, another incident broke out on its heels. Some sheep thing made some comment that pissed off some ornery chick that confronted him then got her hand made limp and some other guy showed up to be antagonistic as well until the whole thing ended with the teachers stepping in to stop the fun. Joseph just chuckled to himself the entire time as he ate breakfast. Here he was, worried that this was going to be a boring, stuffy place and the student body seemed determined to prove him wrong. He had never been happier to be proven wrong. Unfortunately the entertainment had to come to an end, as all things did. Joseph was at least assured that something else was going to start up eventually, and if not, he could always light some sparks himself.

Joseph didn't pay a lot of attention during the tour. If he ever needed to know more about these places, he'd find out when he needed to. All he needed to know about were the places relevant to the subjects he was interested in, but he didn't even have a proper schedule yet. For now, he felt safe keeping his attention to places that actually interested him, like the Athletics Compound. Any good soldier needed a decent workout space. The Research Institute was partially interesting, as if he was going to be a Magic Soldier, he needed a place to study magic, but this Brovak was getting on his nerves. Joseph made a mental note to avoid engaging with him as much as humanly possible.

Joseph couldn't really form an opinion on room assignments, as he barely knew anybody here. At best he could make a few guesses about the character of those he had observed back in the cafeteria, but most of those people were retarded, ornery, or just plain weird. Joseph had a feeling he would just have to leave the damn thing blank and hope for the best. Like a twist of fate, as his thoughts passed over those he had the pleasure of observing earlier, his eyes rested on the sheep Chimera. The little fucker was busy shooting dirty looks at the dog man he had been mouthing off about earlier. Joseph could only guess that he really had a problem with that guy. A malicious smirk shot to his lips.

Suddenly, the sheep would feel an arm wrap around his shoulders in a falsely friendly hug, with Joseph hanging over him displaying a broad grin. "Well howdy there, buddy. I see you're shooting some awful intense looks at those fellas over there. It's because you're too shy to talk to them, right? Don't worry, ol' Joseph Milit's here to help you out." Not giving him a chance to object, Joseph loudly called out to the dog and gorilla pair. "Hey fellas! Little Bo Peep here wants to be friends! Come over and say hello!" Even if the other two didn't respond to his call, Joseph felt like the damage was already done. People were staring, and some of them doubtlessly coming to hasty conclusions about a certain sheep boy that needed a bigger man to help introduce him to people. All the while, Joseph just smiled wider and wider.

Honehe had been largely aloof during the early periods of this initiation. He was not interested in the prattling of this human institution's henchmen, whether they put on a faux monstrous face or not. He had come here to suck up as much knowledge to abscond back to the Commune with as possible, and listening to them talk about patriotic duties and other nonsense was meaningless. He did enjoy the little film they played for them, as unlike others around him, he was quite entertained by a whole human village vanishing off the face of the earth. If the harbinger of such an event was a sentient monster, then all the better for it. Maybe said monster could even prove an ally if they could find and communicate with it. Such a hope might be in vain, as Honehe had no more insight into this "Terraphage" than the humans appeared to.

Honehe spent their breakfast intermission conversing with a few monsters far from the action. He had hoped to sow the seeds of discontent here, but these monsters were largely lacking in ambition, content to live as regular citizens in a hostile society. He had not betrayed his intentions to them yet, but he felt he may never if none of them would prove to have a revolutionary fire in them. It appeared that all he would be able to take from this place would be knowledge. Getting on with the tour, Honehe took note of the key places to learn from. There was much that could be gained from mere passive observation, and these institutions would be the key to doing so.

Room assignments proved more of a problem for Honehe. He knew none well enough to feel comfortable requesting them directly. The problem was that leaving it up to chance may leave him in the company of a human of all things. That would be unacceptable. He had been taught to mask his feelings, but having to endure a prolonged exposure to one or more of them would be troublesome. He would have to be proactive to prevent this outcome. He came to the conclusion that there was no better course of action than to approach the administrator himself.

"Honoured Administrator..." He opened with as he approached the Chimera. He may be a human puppet, but at least he was close enough to monster kind that Honehe would not gag in his presence. "Might I request being paired with someone similar to my species? I apologise, but I do not feel comfortable around less familiar faces. Beyond that, I would not be picky." It was possible the administrator may know of the less than cordial sentiment towards humanity hidden behind his polite words, but the intent of his question would be clear either way. Provided the administrator did not have an agenda to force his cohabitation with humanity, Honehe might escape such misery after all.

Cafeteria

They were introduced to the three buildings that towered over them, Rikka and Alex only arrived when they introduced the last two buildings so where left a little unraveled to what the first building was suppose to be. The generally gist of it was a warehouse or training hall of some sorts but it was probably of none use to Rikka for her first year. They were told to keep quiet and moved on to the next area. Rikka turned back to Alex as they were slowly walking with the group of people.

’Thank you for getting me back to the group, I didn’t see them leave back then. Finding them back wouldn’t have been so quick, I would probably have missed most of the tour if it wasn’t all of the tour.’

Rikka was giving him signs at a slow pace and made sure he could follow her signs. Meanwhile they had entered the social building, it was a big hall with multiple levels along the side of the walls. The main area was a big open space which looked quite pretty due to the authentic look it gave. Rikka looked around the hall just to see what was all here mostly. Most of the rooms on the side appeared to be classrooms where they would be a lot this year so it was good to know your ways around here. Once amidst the hall the explanation continued. Like she had thought, most lectures. They liked to play pranks here? Rikka did not understand after having missed the exploding balloon in the air above them.

’Seems quite big doesn’t it.’

The tour continued through the common area, mostly nature like the entrance of the school. It was pretty though, a lot of tropical plants and flowers she hadn’t seen before. Rikka would like to explore here a little in her free time. They came up on one of the next buildings they were gonna explore. It was the art building the professor mentioned before. The halls were big for anyone here, she wondered why they would have build hallways this big for mostly only students. A big shadow covered over Rikka making her turn her head to the shadow to see what it was. Her face stiffened as her body froze. Her face went pale white as her mouth slowly dropped open. With terrified eyes she followed the monster entering the hall before her. It looked peaceful enough with the cookies but Rikka was still scared to the bone from it.

She could not follow any of the following conversation coming from the weird creature and not either from the professors eating cookies. The tour continued with the creature walking in front of them and speaking to them. Rikka only stared at the creature in both discomfort and confusion. The mouth moved but she couldn’t make anything out of it. Soon they would part and all of them got a free goodie bag of cookies. Rikka took the bag of cookies from the monster with the same look of confusion and discomfort while one of her brows twitched. She took a deep long look at the bag of cookies to see if it had any poison or the likes in it and gave Alex a look of being weirded out as well before interacting with him again.

’Don’t eat them, I think you’ll die.’

They went through another part of the school with even more garden and buildings. How big was this school? She had seen and heard of it but never expected it to be as enormous as this. Across the garden they went further with their tour into the next building. It was the place where they were practicing magic and doing experiments with magic. Rikka gave a short gulp after getting all these warnings and accident ratios heard from the professor. Once hurted they didn’t get helped immediately? They would just have to suffer till they went out of the building again? That was a little harsh. The rooms and the whole building seemed secure for magic use to every extent, she wondered how her own magic could run rampant like destroyed stuff she had seen throughout the building, like scorched ceilings the likes. The professor introduced them to his class room and office. They would be here for a large portion of the year, so it was handy to know where they would need to be going at least. Laboratories could be reserved for when they wanted to experiment with anything they liked. The only had to state what they would do in there and it had to get approved for if they wanted to reserve a laboratory.

The athletics compound look chique as well, filled to the brim with equipment of all sorts. You could train here anything you like but you did have to get staff to help you at times with equipment. Rikka would likely lift any weights or anything so she didn’t think she would be calling staff an awful lot. They were told there was a swimming pool aswell which was heated, sounded nice, Rikka would go there at some point and sit in the water or play if she made any friends.

There was a lot of stuff for monsters to do as well, they even got their own changing rooms and special equipment to clean themselves. This school was super high tech and Rikka liked it a ton for it generosity with disabled and other types of demi humans and monster.

Continuing, they went through a tunnel under a building and ended up in yet another garden area, they were told this was mainly the dormitory area of the school grounds. Each building had its own purpose to house any monster. Rikka would probably go into building Q1 or Q2 if she wasn’t seen as especially huge or small. The tour was concluded with a task to find a roommate of your own. Wait what? They were suppose to get their own roommates? Rikka hadn’t thought about that yet. Did they all make friends yet except her? Well she had one friend now at least, Alex. It certainly was handy to have someone who knew sign language in her room but they weren’t allowed to house with the opposite gender.

Rikka was in a predicament, she didn’t know any of the girls here. If they didn’t find a roommate were they supposed to room alone? Rikka didn’t want to be alone for four years. A girl passed closed by in front of her getting her out of her deep thoughts. Rikka her eyes trailed after the girl for a moment. There didn’t seem anything particularly weird with the girl she just wandered off on her own from the group. The moment she wanted to turn back her head to the group to find a roommate she saw something snap off the bag of the girl. Some sort of cute strap was snapped off by a branch at the side of her bag. Rikka started at the scene for a moment before getting her head straight. She slowly walked over to the strap to pick it up, it seemed pretty worn. Rikka looked back up to look at the girl. Wait, she wasn’t there anymore. Rikka was filled with panic for a moment. She was gonna give it back but that wouldn’t be possible if she didn’t find her now. Rikka rushed forwards a bit before realising she had left someone at the group back there. Seeing her or not seeing her she made a quick farewell sign before rushing after the girl.

A good while later after having rushed through most of the general part of the campus the girl was suppose to be at she had finally found her. Or at least she thought. It was back at the cafeteria where she was standing all alone in line for some food, presumably already having gotten her food at hand already. Hadn’t she eaten yet? Rikka still felt fulfilled by the lunch from just now. Rikka slowly walked over to the girl while she was still panting slightly from all the running she had done. Rikka gently tapped on one of the shoulder of the girl to get her attention and flashed her a sweet happy smile with sweat still standing on her forehead before holding both her hands closed together up towards the girl. She parted her hands and displayed the little strap back to the girl who had presumably lost it. Rikka her smile changed into a somewhat more fulfilled smile of having finally found the owner.

She slightly closed the hand holding the strap and reached with the other hand into her bag as she looked to guide it towards the right notebook. She raised a notebook out of her bag and placed it up on her other underarm opening it shortly after. She wrote a few words and held it up with her empty hand to the girl her face.

’Your strap snapped off your bag in the courtyard. I got it back to you luckily.’

Jesse chose to save her cookie she got from that nice professor for later. She wanted to steal a second one but Professor Goggles saw her so she had to give up on it. Maybe there will be more later if she comes back? She is definitely going back to the garden later as well as the library; both will be nice places to spend time at.
Places like the garden are typically peaceful, or as close as you can get in a place as big as the institute. Large open areas with foliage are nice places to explore. Considering the number of students there is more than likely not anything unknown there, but you never know with magic. Then there was that fountain which really surprised Jesse seeing Garvan, Garrok, Kinash, and Arkos.
There was also the Research Institute not out of interest in the place itself, although renting one of those labs could help, but because of Professor Goggles. When he was talking it sounded more strained than expected. Is he doing alright? Jesse continued to think to herself from her spot hidden among the larger group, blankly staring at anyone or thing that happened to catch her eye.
Excitement, disinterest, and boredom Mixed together in the assembly of students. Small conversations popping up about anything and everything, several of which seemed to be more about someone than the tour itself. At the end of the tour Boorkat materialized a stack of papers before the group disperse. Walking over all of the campus took some time as when it was over people went to the cafeteria.
Now there was the hole matter of this roommate thing. She is definitely going to have one, so the only options are to pick one or let things happen to give her one. Auntie Marissa did say 'To control chance, not let it control you', then again she only said that when caught cheating at board games. Picking up a paper she considered people, but which one?
It was during this consideration that she realized that she has not interacted with anyone. Nor has she watched anyone that much either. Except for earlier with Little, Breckenridge, Purple, and .....those other people. There were others but who was there too? Uniform was there too right? Something happened to her arm and she left, but what happened? Now curious about what happened, Jesse had to know.

Berke Bayamaar

"Indeed! Let us grow strong and well!" Berke replied, taking Mark's hand in a firm handshake. He was so pleased to have found such a friendly partner to share a room with, completely oblivious to the madness that lay within Mark's head. He had been slightly worried from the way this day had started that this might be a school of conflict, but Mark for one had proven to be a perfectly friendly individual. Mark was just the start, however, and Berke hoped to make a strong network of friends to grow upon.

This was but the start of things to give Berke hope, as he soon heard a voice calling out to him from afar. It seemed some errant soul had taken it upon himself to assist another in finding friendship; with himself and Mark no less! Berke could not imagine a more pleasant turn of events. "Shall we go over to them together?" Berke offered to Mark. Either way, Berke wasn't about to turn down the opportunity to make even more friends. Approaching the pair, he could tell that one of them was the Chimera at the center of one of the earlier incidents in the cafeteria. Perhaps he wanted to make up for his earlier behavior? This was an excellent turn of events indeed!

"Ah, hello Bo!" Berke said upon arriving at the pair that had called to him. The other man had called him "Litle Bo Peep", so that had to be his name, right? "I'm Berke Bayamaar, and if you want to be friends, I'm all for it." He offered a friendly handshake upon finishing his sentence. He took note of the man standing with him, who was putting on such a broad smile. What a nice man he had to be to take it upon himself to help another find friends. He would have to try and find out his name later. It would only be rude to leave him out. For now though, his focus was on the one that had clearly asked for his attention.
