I think the biggest challenge with giving credit where it is due is that due to the amount of re-uploads it can be difficult to trace it back down. I should spend time trying to track down the source of an image and give it proper credit by linking back to the source, but I can understand why it can be challenging to do so for many; though some people being apathetic and entitled is a different problem in itself. How do you properly source something if you don't have a source?

Not that this exploitation and appropriation of another artist’s work is appropriate or excusable. But if we as a community best try to be considerate, I think we can minimize the damage we are doing to our visual peers. As for what the moderation staff should do? Most role-playing communities have rules on plagiarism and visual appropriation. I think we should follow in that stead, though not completely disallow art use at the same time. When an artist contacts the staff, the staff should investigate and validate their claim, and see if a compromise can be done before editing the image out by their request.

It’s easy to say “well they’re dumb for uploading it”. It’s easy to handwaive it being not our problem.

Sometimes being an adult isn't easy.

You want to know why artists get pissed off that you use their work without permission? Because we work hard on them and the amount of designing that went into it, and its completely unfair, not to mention RUDE and completely disrespectful to use it without permission. It takes a lack of COMMON DECENCY to do something like this.

The issue is not a simple as you using it, it’s about not getting permission and not giving them credit for doing so. Which a lot of of you do. Personally, when someone does to me, it makes me feel like you are STEALING my work....

Here's my question, do you own that picture you yourself already have on the site? Or have permission by the owner to use it? I have a feeling that's not yours.

If it is, you have about four hundred people (AT LEAST) using that exact same picture right now.

Because although I do understand and empathize with artists that create work, having others plagiarize or use their work without permission is unfortunate. It's an outright lie that people have never done it themselves before, with the vast amount of pictures on the internet, posted anywhere and everywhere. It's impossible to find the original creator, most times. The intention is so rarely to be used as theft. So when people are so full of ego to assume it will never be done, is quite laughable.

As long as it isn't taking away their profit and they aren't claiming it's their picture, the best thing you can do is directly contact the person using it. They'll likely not be that rude to you, if you're simply kind in return. I don't want to say, purposefully stealing art is okay because you post it on the internet. But have a little more faith in others and don't be a hypocrite and use art that doesn't belong to you.

My opinion if I find it on deviantart, Google (image) search, pinterest, whatever it's 100% public domain. The artist has no right to say where it can or can't be viewed because they made it 100% public.

IMO that's no different than if I decided to whip out my junk in the middle of a public park and got angry that people looked at it.

I don't think it's a matter of getting permission really. Because obviously it's on the internet and they put it up to get exposure and they're very aware people will save/download/repost whatever. Yes they've put their copyright notice on it in terms of someone not stealing the work to resell.
Its more along the lines of if the original artist finds out that their work is being used on another website and decides not to take legal action and instead requests that the site mod/admin takes it down then they take it down.

Ahh. Public domain doesn't quite work like that, just so you know.

That's like me saying, since a singer/artist released this song to the public and you can find it online, he/she now has no right to say where this song can be uploaded and shared since they did release it to the public.

An artist who has uploaded their work to a place that it widely accessible doesn't remove the copyright.

My faith has dwindled over the hundreds of people, who are in fact RUDE about it and refuse to take it down. I’ve had this problem many times and I’m quite sick of it. As far as your insults go, they mean little to nothing, because you don’t know me and you haven’t been on our side of the spectrum. How would you feel if someone took from your role play posts and didn’t bother to give credit? And for your “problem” on finding the original artists, it’s called a reverse image search. Do enough research and you’ll the artist, if you don’t, then DONT USE IT.

and the image was sent to me by a friend who asked me to use it so she could always find my posts, but I’ll change it just to show that the only hypocrite is you.

Removing it is easy. We either ask the person to remove it, or hide the post completely. In one past case I had an issue with some sensitive pictures so I hid the post, the user edited it, and I unhid the message once they did what they needed.

So it's not really the process for removing that's in question, but the monitoring and questions of what is expected of artist, and what is expected of us site users on a whole.

A) There's a search function on the site that lets you search posts by specific users.
B) Changing your image is clearly an admission of guilt.
C) "I'm gonna change my image after being called out for being a hypocrite, but you're the hypocrite."

I don't really want to dabble in this discussion, but just from skimming over this thread, you're coming across as the rude one here. I think people are just trying to view the situation from both sides and for the most part, they've been polite about the matter. You calling people hypocrites and morons isn't really helping your argument or image here, nor does it speed up the process of figuring out what to do regarding your art.

Really this thread's utterly pointless and has only so far served to let armchair lawyers stroke their e-peen over how much they think they know about copyright law.

Everyone with half a brain knows that this issue will be dealt with by the mods the same way it's always been dealt with no matter the outcome of this thread, IE respecting artists wishes and honoring takedown requests(though hopefully after actually verifying the artist). I'd honestly just lock and end it.

Yeah that would solve a lot of problems, Not giving proper credit is what really pisses artists off. A lot of us won’t care about you using it as long as you ask then credit it.

Pardon me, wasn’t trying to be rude. I’m just sick of people thinking it’s okay to do this. And I didn’t start the name calling.
