History:
Herbert was born into a minor noble family in Elibe under a different name which he no longer uses. It was a somewhat wealthy and respected House. An only child, Herbert was the sole focus of his parents attempts to raise a child worthy of taking over their branch of the family, paying for the finest tutors and sending him to the best centers of learning that they could. They worked hard to ensure that their son was of a mindset suited for learning and they did their job well, Herbert quickly raising to whatever challenges were presented to him.
He would often spend his days, pawing through book after book on just about any subject in order to further broaden his mind while preparing himself to become a successful young man in high society, but it was the history of the war with Gaia that sparked his interest the most in his youth. Gaia's desire to destroy all life and the tools that she used in the form of the undead was the source of much debate in his youth, trying to understand why a Goddess of Life would do such a thing... and helped shape what he wanted to do with his life from just being some high standing, successful nobleman to something... greater.
"Life-" He rationalized to himself "-cannot exist without Death. Therefore Gaia is not just the Goddess of Life, but the Goddess of Death as well. Even with no one actually worshiping her as a goddess of life anymore, her aspect of death still allows her to draw strength from the world... But what if death itself could wither and die?"
Inspired, he dedicated himself to the sciences and the medical arts both mundane and magical. He even underwent training as a priest in order to further his knowledge of the living form and the magics required to restore and fortify it from injury and decay. For a time, he seemed to all to be a fine, upstanding gentleman of the realm who would do his House proud...
Then there was... the Incident. One of his earlier experiments in restoring life to the dead was a recently deceased cat by the name of Lady Elune. The pampered house cat of one of his Aunts in life, she had died of a heart defect and was buried in a shallow grave in the backyard of the estate. Lady Elune was special because she was the first test subject in which he got a proper response... through it wasn't what he intended. Lady Elune rose from the dead, but not as the living creature that he had desired; The process that animated her twisted and mutated her into a Terror normally seen in the dark places of the world. The abomination that was formally Lady Elune broke free of containment and smashed through several doors and a window before escaping into the outside world, running amok in the nearby town and killing three people in a mindless rage before it was successfully put down and its corpse burned to ashes.
Herbert was disowned by his family and house, given a head start to flee before they took measures to ensure that his mistake was not linked back to them and caused harm to the reputation of their noble linage. Stripped of his original name and title (His family claiming that he had been another victim of the Terror and that they had him privately buried), he took on the name Herbert West as he went out into the world, unwilling to let one slip up ruin everything he wanted to achieve.
Personality:
He is a brilliant, narcissistic, and intensely driven young man, somewhat arrogant and lacking respect for both the living and dead. Spending much of his free time performing magical and chemical experiments to reverse the latter to restore those who have died to life. He heals others because it is a service that provides him funds to dedicate to his research and experiments, as well as providing him with access to dead bodies when he finally reaches the stages of human testing.
He has been called a Necromancer in the past, a title which he actually finds gravely insulting; He is not trying to raise a mindless, undead solder or servant to do his bidding, he is striving to make death itself become obsolete by defeating it.
