Welcome to the RP info stuff!

Overworld has been an idea of mine for five years. I’ve been told to convert it to a DnD campaign, and I thought, why not try it here?

Plot: A group of 5-12+ greenhorn individuals, from soldiers to mages from alternate realms, lead the, stretching it to start, finest unit of the mercenary company Horizon in the war on the extremist cult Oracle. Little do they know of the fiends in the forests of this Earth, let alone the Multiverse...

DISCLAIMER: This RP will have disturbing content, and is based off of current events.

What to expect: Modern fantasy action/intrigue with a dash of philosophy on the idea of extremism. Other than that a damn good time!

Plot format: Upon meeting up at Horizon HQ and training (skipable if desired), the party will go on missions. From the police work that needs done to actually engaging in (hopefully) weeding out Oracle, the party members will gain experience and become more seasoned in merc work. There will be BREAKS IN THE ACTION where the players can spend time with other players, train, rest... it’s up to you.

CHARACTER MECHANICS/LIMITS: Up to two player controlled primary characters and two NPC/player controlled secondary characters. Additions/exceptions can be made for certain story arcs.

Being a Multiverse RP, your character can be from an alternate realm. The only thing in common with these realms? Coming to Earth makes them in some way, shape,or form a BLANK SLATE. This makes it so the character must earn their skills/powers. They also know NOTHING of their home realm, save for some associating artifact, be it some marking or an actual artifact/trinket. Certain things will trigger flashbacks. Your character starts with the basics of whatever power they have.

Leveling via missions is shared— nobody will be gypped out of power stuff if they get wounded/ko’d.

Training will only get you a level higher than your partners— some things are just learned in the field ;)

FACTIONS:

Most military factions

Horizon: An upstart PMC company with one primary objective: Stop Oracle.

Oracle: An extremist, fanatical cult who believes that Earth is at THE BRINK, a prophecized destruction of the planet. Most members usually associate with the most extreme beliefs of a group/ideology.

Collective Outcry: another PMC company. Tl;dr: they’re pissed. At what? Who knows.

Arbiters of Order: A mid to late faction, these law-obsessed individuals are fixated on order, and enforcing their narrative, no matter the cost.

And many more... have a faction idea? Shoot it by me!!

Name:
Age:
Appearance:
Home Realm: Open to OC ideas or canon realms? Want a mage from the MtGverse? Go for it! Feelin your OC realm of artificers? Do it!
Backstory: optional
Powers: Give a brief explanation of the power. Emphasize starting, middle game, and end/post game abilities.
Skills: Is your character handy with mechanics? Kickass programmer? Put that here!
Stats: 1-10 scale. Be reasonable. Most of this will be writing based.
Strength: Do they hit hard? Determines skill with melee weapons and other strength stuff.
Dexterity: Can they do shit with their hands? Has some say in firearms handling, melee weapon skill, lockpicking, etc. Covers dodging.
Endurance: Whatever it is, can they do it for a long time? Determines how long they fan run, fight, hold heavy objects, etc. Includes defense.
Intelligence: Do they understand? Dictates mental knowledge, learnng new things, directional awareness, etc
Charisma: Smooth talker? Affects persuasion, bribery and the such.
Arcane: Do they know this shit? Influences magic and manipulation of objects from other realms except Earth.

I have some main characters that would work AMAZING for this RP. DM me if interested. Also, feel free to play an antagonist! They won’t count towards your character limit. I also have some characters in mind for the bad guys.

Very interesting idea. Most multiverse RPs lack that special something to make them real RPs, in my opinion. Hence I don't frequent them. But what your doing could get past those usually imposed limits.

This has my eye, certainly~

However I'll wait and see how the int check turns out before I make a commitment to it.

And it's all centered on a modern Earth with no explanation for how the actual crossover aspect works too. Wouldn't it be better to just have your own multiverse such as Michael Moorcock's works, RIFTS or similar settings?

What this guy said. It sounds like you'd be better off with something like a video game multiverse or something. Something that has set and fast rules which is what your going for, but it wont make the characters basically vanilla joe, but its mario.

I happen to think that taking away the memories and abilities is a good idea. It's different from a lot of other multiverse rps I've seen in the past. Plus, having our characters start out fresh allows everyone the chance to get to know each other, without 'egos' getting involved. Plus, it's always more interesting to have characters discover abilities in an rp as opposed to just having them from the start. Personally, I think it gives more incentive for everyone to dedicate more time and energy into the rp.

I think the loss of all powers is an issue. Iconic stuff should probably say, such as Mario's jumping ability.

It's not really a 'loss' of powers per say. It's more along the lines of losing the understanding/ knowledge of the powers. I think innate abilities like physical strength, or tough skin stay. Although, I'm not sure how strong the powers will remain after coming through.

Also what about weapons? Arthas the Lich King for example, all his stuff is in Frostmourne.

That way you're actually starting fresh, instead of having an existing character but not, which puts us back to my point that it feels like the crossover aspect is tacked on given we don't even have any real explanation or even a plot hook as to how or why it's happening.

Progression is fine and good, of course, though I'd consider that roleplays often advance slowly and rarely reach any manner of endgame, meaning usually betting in the long run doesn't pay off, so it tends to be better to let players start out with a solid base that they can then expand from. Mario can always jump good and he gets better abilities later, as it were.

@jynmi88 Not even OCs would be excluded from the supposed problem. I have a right pile of science-fiction lore I've written over years to the point of creating an entire continuous universe. I could pull characters from that at whim and they would be OCs under the standard definition, whilst still having all of the objections Archmage and Zero Hex have cited.

The RP is also advertised on the concept of being multidimensional, actively pulling characters from "alternate realms", but the setting it lays down doesn't really cover anything that might lead to the crossover aspect or how it'd work, which along with kinda blanking canon characters anyways made me question the multiversal aspect of it. Obviously, not my game, just felt this all needed to be said because I think it could help polish the starting idea.

Holy wow this got some feedback!

The idea of your characters coming from SOME realm to Earth serves as a starting point. Earth will serve as like the training grounfd, I guess? Since your characters will be pretty much new to the cause. It also can help build characters; were they hella famous/nortoious back home? Were they a powerful fighter/wizard? How did they get to Earth?

Basically it’s a way of developing characters haha

I honestly don't see any problems with the blank state. There's lots of stories, even rps, whose characters start without having any memory. Also, I don't think the blank state is in fact permanent. The way The GM described it, our characters don't have their memories permanently deleted, just sort of repressed as he mentioned it slowly coming back and getting flashes when exposed to certain things. Eventually, everything will come back to them.

Okay but, why does it have to be some realm? Sounds like we'd just be winging it with apparently nothing to make the crossover aspect relevant or central, don't you think? By that point, to fully enforce the idea of requiring training it'd feel more sensical to just have, for instance, the chaotic state of the world weakening the fabric of reality to the point that magic becomes active once more and technology advances at a breakneck pace. That way you can have a wide variety of characters on a consistent setting that actually require training and development and adapting to a changed world without having them be existing characters for some reason.

Aside from the multiversal aspect feeling a fair bit tacked on, it feels like there's a disconnect between the general attractiveness of crossovers (established characters that can already do things people/players know and like) and actively taking away their memories and skills. Every character building aspect you brought up kinda hinges upon the characters' stories that you're taking away, so blanking them runs rather contrary to that for the sake of a development that doesn't even need to happen that way. Development can well just be adapting to an entirely different world.
