Lately I been, I been losing sleep...Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby I been, I been prayin' hard...Said no more counting dollars, we'll be counting stars...
Yeah, we'll be counting stars.

The DigiDestined. Chosen Children from different parts of the world with each having sets of dreams that would summon them to the very beach resort for a vacation of a lifetime. Then suddenly came the morrow on that hot summer night, a freak blackout...in which a gateway into a world different from what they once knew opened without warning, a gateway into the realm known as the Digital World. For champions are needed against a great evil, a threat that seeks to take over all universes, both Digital and Real.

This is a morally grey tale where you choose between willful evil and wanton destruction, unless you figure things out and come up with your own solution...

10.00am UTC+8/Monday; August 1, 2011 - NanaZuika Sugbu Beach Resort - Poolside
Mactan Island, Cebu, Philippines

The luau last night was another smashing success. I guess fire dances are quite a spectacle. And it's a good thing that even there's paramedics on standby, there was no untoward incident during the show. It seems nothing can go wrong today: 12 days left before I turn 15, today will be just like any other day, buffet breakfast earlier with the performers before they leave was great, and the weather agrees. Before I do some time trials today, I then proceed to the showers. Then behind me, Chiaki-kun seems flustered...

"Seven-sama, what is this ticket doing at my locker besides my paycheck? And it's much too much...!"
"Chiaki-kun, go ahead and take the time off today at SM. The ticket's for 'Captain America', you may take any schedule."
"No, no, no, Seven-sama... I can't accept this."
"Chiaki-kun, I insist. It seems I talked to your parents last night, and they took it well that I'm the one taking care of you."
"Exactly! That's why I can't..."
"No, really... They're cool with it. In fact, they'll be coming over here in a week. What I'd like you to do for today at SM City Cebu is get yourself some new clothes, go treat yourself all day there and watch a feel-great movie. This is how I owe you from helping me out with recovering our stuff after 3/11 back home."
"Well, I suppose..."

The next thing Chiaki did is a very formal bow. I should be the one doing this, but...

"Seven-sama... No... Hamada Shichirou-sama, dōmo arigatō gozaimashita! I'll beg a thousand, even ten thousand pardons and even more if I ever did something wrong since the day we met, and now...I'm forever indebted to you!"

I can see his tears dripping like crazy. Again, I should be the one bowing down to him...!

"Hey, cheer up. Stop crying, on your feet and go have some fun today."

Chivalry. Or in our case, bushidō, is still alive and well. I did my bow as well, and then gave him a hug after. Because who doesn't want a hug?

"You're still a Matsuno, don't you think you're better off on your own doing the right thing this time?"
"I still bear our clan name, it may take a little longer before I can do just that...!"

After sending him off with a few more small talk, Chiaki-kun went along with the resort's guests' shuttle to take him to the mall. Our talk took long, I may have to take lunch later than noon. Well, time to go back in the water for me now: Shower, pool, shower again, late lunch, attend to guests.

Doing sane stuff like this does wonders, don't you think? And this will be one of the times that I'll let things go on what's next, so...

Mistah Furafu sat at the edge of the bed, staring at him as he folded some of his suits in a mini suitcase meant for a girl’s doll. Still Mistah Furafu had been through thick and thin with him. He deserved a vacation as well.

“I even brought your surfboard,” Kei tells Furafu.

There is a knock at his shoji and he turns around to see his grandmother standing at the door frame. She smiles, her hair in an updo.

“Kei, are you getting ready?” she ask.

“Yes,” he replies.

“I heard talking dear,” she says sweetly.

“I was talking to Mistah Furafu,” he replies.

She only acknowledges him with a nod before saying, “You’ll love the Phillipines dear. You know your grandfather and I got married there.”

That’s why they were going to the Philippines in the first place for their anniversary. They wanted to show him where they got married. And he’s starting to think maybe they think it be good for him. They seem to be concerned for him as of late and he’s not so certain why. He didn’t mind his new school, in the quieter district. He didn’t mind his teachers. Problem was everyone found out what he tried to do. Now everyone avoids him like he’s a curse. They part from him like the tide from the bank.

Kei grabs Mistah Furafu.

“I made you new pajamas,” he tells Mistah Furafu, “You’ll like them, they are your favorite color.”

Did he pack everything? He had his sketchbook, he wanted to draw some beach scenes. He always liked to find something interesting to draw or something that catch his eyes. Most people passed by interesting scenes and didn’t notice the beautiful shapes and stories because they weren’t looking for them. Lightly stepping out of his bedroom, his home was oddly modern and oddly old as well. It was nothing like the apartment he use to live in the city with his mom and dad.

Some days he missed them. Other days he wanted to know why they made him live here with his grandparents. He didn’t hate his grandparents, just nothing changed much. The scenery might have. But not people’s impressions. They all wore fake smiles through the windows, but he heard the things kids parents whispered about him. Upon hearing his secret.

“I’m all packed,” he tells his grandfather reading a newspaper.

“That’s good, you’re reliable as always,” his grandfather tells him and smiles.

“I can help with dinner, where’s the list?” he ask, “I’ll pick up the stuff.”

“Money and list should be on the counter,” his grandfather pauses, “Kei, perhaps….you should leave Mistah Furafu home today when you do so.”

He knew it. Their growing concern. It isn’t that he couldn’t go without Mistah Furafu. It’s just that he didn’t want to. Kei lifts up the hood of his sweater, “Okay.” he says grabbing money and the grocery list on the counter.

Looking at the list, it looked like they were having okonomiyaki for dinner. Putting on his in the genkan, he leaves the house. The sun is beginning to set, turning the sky orange and purple. He liked when the sky looked like a watercolor painting. His new neighborhood was old, but not. Modern, but not. The city he now lived in was small, and not so busy. Which was good, but not. Everybody knew everybody and when he finally came to the corner store he saw a gang of bikes and a group of kids he goes to school with hanging out eating ice cream.

One of the kids, Futomi-kun notices him right away.

“Eh it’s weird kid,” Futomi-kun calls out for the rest of his friends to notice him.

He feels a bubbling sensation building in his gut and his heart rate is beginning to quicken in pace.

“I….am….not weird,” he mumbles trying to defend himself.

Futomi laughs and puts a hand to his ear, “Didn’t hear you.”

He tries to go into the store quickly, but Futomi stands in front of him.

“P..l...ease….move a...side,” he stutters, he can’t control his voice right now. He wants to sound tougher. Like he isn’t scared or nervous. But it doesn’t come out that way. Futomi just laughs.

“Ppppp,” Futomi mocks his stuttering while the other kids begin to snicker, he lightly shoves Kei back, “Ask me again. On your knees this time.”

Rest of the kids are watching and no adults as coming to the rescue. He’s trying to not to cry in front of Futomi, so he gets on his knees, with blurry watery vision, “Pl...ease…..ex...cuse...me Fu--tomi-kun.”

Futomi snickers, “Whatever, get up. You look pathetic like that.”

This whole entire situation would have been different if he had been allowed to bring Mistah Furafu. Tears began to roll down his face. He wasn’t supposed to cry in front of Futomi and the rest of the kids were merely mocking him now, rolling tears down their face. Futomi just scoffs, “Did I make you cry? You’re pathetic.”

He forgot about the task at hand and ran in the opposite direction. Why did he exist? When his mother and father didn’t even want him any more after what he had done. When the kids at school laughed at him like they do. Why was he so pathetic?

The trip hadn’t been all that it had been cracked up to be. Grandma and grandpa were upset the very beach they had married on were littered with people. It wasn’t always like this, his grandfather said, you could see the beach when we were young. Now all you can see are the heads of people. Still Kei didn’t mind, it meant getting away from school for a while. He dreaded going back actually. He was starting to feel sick with anxiety beginning build inside. His grandparents were off celebrating their anniversary, while he spent most of the time sketching. Staying by himself. He preferred to stay away from anyone his age.

He sat at the poolside, Mistah Furafu sitting on a pool chair.

“You were fantastic,” Kei tells Mistah Furafu looking at a picture of Mistah Furafu surfing with sunglasses, “Maybe we can get you to dive from there.”

He points to the high diving board.

“You’ll do fine, you’re so athletic,” he tells Furafu.

He moves to an empty page and begins to draw the pool, and the diving board. He hums to himself.

Kei hadn’t spoken to many kids his age since he came to the Philippines, actually he had always taken the time to be by himself. This was sort of different though as an older boy was talking to him, not much older, but older. He had black hair and brown irises, he seemed the athletic type. Like Futomi and other boys back home who were starting to get bigger and stronger than wimps like him. He felt a little unease as he began to talk to him.

Kei fumbled with his paper. He recalls a boy from his other school, a Takahashi Shinobu, once black hair and brown irises. Can I see your artwork?

He squeezed his sketchbook for a little comfort, as if it were a protective shield from the older boy.
“I…” his hands were shaking, if he didn’t give the boy his sketchbook than would he hit him instead?
Hunkering his head down he wondered if remaining small would make him go invisible and the other boy go away.

Near the spot where Kei is, Seven's taking his time with his swimming, as what he does daily for a workout. Time trials are important whether there's an incoming competition or not.

After making it on the other end, he stopped for a moment and took notice of the little kid artist on one of the poolside chairs. This suddenly reminded Seven of his time back in middle school being bullied: he was frail for his age and is a total nerd. Before he got out of the pool, he puts his hand over his face, thinking about that time.

"Hey, kid... You have great talent there."

He can't really stop the shaking in his hands, he nervously picks at a scab on the top of his hand. Why did he come back? Why does he still notice him? He could feel his heart racing and his chest tightening.
"I....thank....you," he mutters, maybe that's it. Maybe that's all the older boy wanted. Think smaller. Be smaller. You're just an ant. If you think you 're an ant then you'll shrink the size of an ant.

"It's no trouble, and you're welcome. What's your name? I'm Seven."
The 14-year old swimmer took care not to startle the little artist because of his improved frame right now compared to back then as he wore his bathrobe to cover up his jammers.

Would he come after him if he gave him his name? He looks Japanese. Is he on vacation too? It be silly to think that he goes to the same smaller town as him, but he's not sure. What's a name like Seven? Sounds like a pseudonym.

"...Takashi....Shiro...." a name of one of his bullies, he didn't mean for the name to come out. Something reminded him of a scenario with him. But, he rather this older kid go after him than him. Oh that sounds as bad as Takashi Shiro. What should he do Mistah Furafu?

"You all right there? My bad if that was sudden of me to ask, but... Little artist Taka-kun... I hope you don't mind me telling you, that...there's something about you that reminded me of my past. I can tell by your weak tone of voice."

Weak tone of voice? The phrasing stood out to him. So, he was just hear to make fun of him. It always ended up that way. Didn't it? People pretended to be nice to your face, but the reality was that they just wanted to get close to hurt you. Grabbing Mistah Furafu he mumbled an excuse, "My...parents....will...be mad if I am.....out alone too long."

A young woman with long and glossy hair would look at the scene on her way to the pool. She had just showered and put on a one-piece pink swimsuit that accentuated her figure more than more 'revealing' pieces did. Against her will, she walked nearer the scene, though stopped before entering Seven and Kei's 'personal bubble'. Nevertheless, if Kei tried to run away, there was a chance he might bump into her. Oh, well, Carol Akechi liked convinient coincidences.

"Do you need help, kid? I can ask some staff here to help you out..."
Seven took care also not to give away the fact as the son of the beach resort's owners, as that would evoke a prideful impression.
Pink. He was seeing a wave of pink in his eyes, as he tried to flee the situation with his hoodie on his head.

"Sorry," he mumbles.

A young man had collided with her, but Carol surprisingly wasn't angry, just shocked. Looking down at the ten year old kid with the sketchbook, the young woman blinked and said. "Apology accepted. Anyway, have you seen a young blond man with golden eyes, an American, in this resort? He got a ticket to come here as well..."

"No..." he whispers quietly, "I....have....n't....do.....you need help?"
Carol nods at that. "Are you lost, little boy? If so, we can look for your relatives and my...friend at the same time."

She doesn't notice Seven, or was pretending not to notice Seven. She knew the latter bore some resemblance to the resort owners, so it was probably the latter.

The time was now nearing lunch break, and instead of intervening, Seven proceeds to the Guests' Lounge. Surprisingly, Chiaki Matsuno returned, and only brought with him some shopping bags.
"Uh, what happened?"

"The shuttle had some engine problems, driver's navigation app was not working, and on top of that, some of the guests inside are experiencing communication errors of some sort."

"That didn't happen before. Anyway, get everyone back in the lobby. I'll let Mom and Dad know about this. And I'll get back to you later with what you got in those bags."

Kei shakes his head, "I am....not lost. My....grandparents are spending....time together." He nervously fidgets with his hands. Intertwining his fingers together to self sooth. His chest was tightening and he felt restless at this moment.

A nod from Carol before she suggested, smiling, "Well, there's a storm coming, or so says the weather reports. Why don't you let me guide you inside the resort building?"
Kei tries to keep his head down and his heart rate steady, taking in deep breaths. It's been an odd morning. He hasn't met a lot of people in his age group so suddenly and what felt, he dsidn't know strange.

"I...was consider...draw...ing the storm," Kei mumbles.

Carol blinks, "Wouldn't that get you hurt? A storm is no laughing matter. Is this your first time expperiencing one?"

"I know....to get to high ground," Kei says, "Sometimes....though, there is beauty...in the chaos."

He liked the grayness of the sky and the sound the ocean made when it raged with fury. Not saying that he wanted the place to drown in a tsunami, actually he'd prefer if that were not the case. He simply found inspiration in the world around him. Something most didn’t understand.

A grin from Carol. “I like the way you think! Why don’t I watch the chaos with you, then? But if you don’t want to, you don’t want to. So I’ll leave you alone, then?”

He felt a flutter in his chest for a mere second. No one has offered to enjoy the activities he enjoyed. Well maybe she’s being polite. He feels a bit flustered at the offer.

“Only….only….only if you want to,” he finds himself stammering.

A smile; Carol was actually honest because Kei was not dangerous to her, “Then I want to! Let’s go!”

It’s the first time he probably felt a jolt of excitement. He found himself picking up his head slightly, “Your name? And we should go!”

She turned towards him as she began to follow Kei, “Carol, Akechi Carol.”

Akechi? He had assumed she was from Europe. He fidgets, “Himura...Kei.” he replies quietly.

“Happy to meet you for the first time, Kei-kun,” another note of sincerity as Carol walked to higher ground…

“Same Akechi-san, do you live in Europe?” Kei ask as he follows her. Not too closely, holding Mistah Furafu in his arm and his sketchbook close to his chest.

Carol shook her head, “I wish I did. I live in Japan but my Mother came from the Philippines - she has European blood, though.” A genuine frown. “Here’s a deal; don’t look down on me for being half-foreign, and I won’t look down on you. How’s that sound?”

Kei shakes his head, “I...never look down on someone. It’s mean and…” he trails off at first, “really hurts when someone does….that.” he pauses and holds Mistah Furafu closer, “....always thought it be nice to have a castle. Not like the ones we have in Japan. But in a magical world.”

A smile. “Well, my family owns a few Japanese Castles; they’re fairly nice on the outside.” Then a sigh. “I wish Magical Worlds were real..”

12.51pm UTC+8/Monday; August 1, 2011 - NanaZuika Sugbu Beach Resort - Hamada Residence (NanaZuika Big Cabana)
Mactan Island, Cebu, Philippines

"Mom? Dad?”

Takahiro Hamada (浜田 貴大 Hamada Takahiro)

Sachiko Hamada (浜田 幸子 Hamada Sachiko)

Weren’t those meant for the guests? Dad is sitting in a massage chair with his eyes closed, as Mom moves around the room tidying up a shelf after assisting the ladies prepping up the guests' lunch buffet in the big kitchen, as the routine at this time of the day.

“How was your laps in the pool, love?”, she asked. Still treating me like a child, it seemed. That same voice I had grown up hearing and it hadn’t changed even though I was older. After a kiss on her cheek, I answered.

"It was fine, Mom. Same answer as the last time, I know... And aren't those meant for the guests? You already bought one for our own last Friday night.", I asked Dad while Mom prepares our lunch at the dining table.

“I’m just trying it out...”, Dad laughs with a big grin on his face. Of course that was going to be his reaction. What was I expecting?

"I can't be mad at your father for this. Well, since you're here, was there a problem?"

"Yes. One of our shuttles got an engine failure upon arriving back here, the driver's navigation app on his phone kept on crashing and the guests aboard are at the lobby dealing with their own phones. We have Chiaki-kun to thank for letting me know first-hand."

"Do you have the megaphone?", I look towards Dad. He keeps his eyes closed for a second. He suddenly moves with a quickness you don’t ordinarily see from the man, it’s a bit surprising.

"Shichirou, go change and come with me. Tell Matsuno-kun I owe him a treat for the two of you.", he then says with urgency. Mom was surprised as well.

“All right boys, be back here once you’re done!”, she said as she saw us went through the main door.

The NanaZuika Sugbu has come a long way since we arrived from Manila. I remember when the balls were bare and the beachfront was still empty. There were framed photos hanging on the hallways and placed by the small tables, and there too were signed photos by a guest that Dad knew personally. Chiaki-kun’s been waiting for us in the Guests' Lounge, and during this time of year we seem to have guests from the UK, perhaps it’s winter time at their place.

Chiaki Matsuno (松野 千秋 Matsuno Chiaki)

"Trying to go for another color, I see.", I said while remarking about his purple tie.

He laughs, "Seven-sama, are you jealous?"

"No, not at all. Both green and purple looks good on you. And what’s the update?"

“Thank you, Seven-sama. Anyway, you ask what’s been happening? While out on tour of the city, near the mall, the sky began to dim. Phones began to act weird and start to glitch, switching on and off? Is this a haunting?”, Chiaki-kun said, looking worried.

"Calm down there...you think ghosts are attacking people’s phones?”, I asked him.

He then said next, “Anything could be possible, you think you might have accidentally disturbed an ancient burial site?”

"I don’t remember Cebu City, or even Mactan Island having a dark history... I’m sure all that’s nothing. My Switch however, is doing just fine, could be an electrical storm.”

I stopped for a moment, and then I remember that it’s the beginning of August. Locals, or the Filipinos in general are superstitious, knowing that some unexplained occurrences happen at this month. I’m not scared in the slightest, but Chiaki-kun is.

“Don’t worry about a thing, Chiaki-kun.", I tell him.

“Yeah, sure, an electrical storm...”, he rolls his eyes.

How do I convince myself not to worry? This obviously isn’t some kid’s prank. And I was wrong to expect this just a way to scare some people.

Carver Edwards

Location: Beach Resort Interactions: None

Just arriving to the Beach resort was one Carver Edwards. He was happy to be here as he hadn't before given opportunities like this. Carver was given an invitation out of the blue to go to this resort or some sort of vacation. Carver thought it was a bit strange but he didnt over think it as it was suppose to be a vacation at a beach resort.

He arrived and quickly went to whatever room he was assigned to and quickly getting out and seeing what is there to do. He sat around keeping to himself as he didnt know anyone here at the resort. Carver listened to what everyone was saying though there seemed to some sort of storm on the way or electrical storm. Carver wasnt afraid of a little storm, Carver was just happy to be away from the cold winter he left back in the UK. So he was going to relax during this vacation if he could as it felt comfortable and Carver wasnt going to let a little storm keep him from enjoying this nicer weather.

Eventually Carver got bored and headed to the guest lounge to see what to do around in this place. When he got there is saw a few people but he didn't know any of them. How could he know any of them though. He wasnt from around here and from the look of things there were few people who also werent from here ether. Carver was really starting to wonder why were they here? Did these people also get invitations the same way he did just out of the blue for seemingly no reason behind it?

Carver decided he would just hang around the guest lounge for a bit. His thoughts were that someone would tell him why was here here, or perhaps why he was given the opportunity to come to a resort like this. Carver found a place to sit by himself and sat there. Planning on staying there until someone would talk to him or something would happen to get his attention. Carver was keeps his eyes open and listening though to everything around him so he can get some sort of idea of what was going on. Or what he can do here.

A group of confused and angry guests were beginning to form in the lobby. They were looking around for someone to take charge and take charge my father did, with a firmness that didn’t seem like him outside of the public eye.

“Everyone!” he says loudly, all eyes are on him now, “First off I’d like to welcome you all to the NanaZuika Sugbu.” he bows, “Second of all, I’d like to address any concerns you may have. I have been made aware of the current situation and give you my humble apology that you’re experiencing this inconvenience. Unfortunately at this time we are also experiencing the same technical difficulties so we have no further information of why this may be occurring. Instead we have waived the fee for our lunch services today. I hope we can resolve this situation soon.”

I don’t know how Dad can be so relaxed in situations like this. I’d be too stressed to do his job, and yet watching him shows me the expectation that I’ll have some day. Would I be able to follow in his footsteps, I wonder? Right now he doesn’t seem like the same Dad I know: the one wearing goofy hats and laughing. This is an entirely different Dad at this moment and I am struck with both awe, and anxiety. I don’t know how to quell that side of me.

Dad takes one last bow and makes his way to the reception desk. Stepping into the eyesight of the very angry crowd, who feels like none of their concerns have been yet addressed I’m a bit nervous to take control, but I do.

“Please, sit wherever you like,” I tell the crowd, “And while it isn’t time for lunch yet, we can discuss the current situation in hopes to ease any of your doubts.”

Dad smiles at me proudly from the reception desk. I feel my cheeks go hot for a brief second.

“Young man,” a businessman raises his hand from the crowded lobby.

“Seven, sir,” I say with a slight bow.

“Seven, then,” the man makes a funny face, Dad’s still eyeing me, should I have given my first name then, huh, “My wife and I were on our way to Cebu from here when the storm blew in. We were expecting rain, thunder. Not our phones acting up. Is this some kind of hacker, perhaps?”

“It’s probably just an electrical storm,” says a disinterested teenager trying to get her phone to work.

“Do you even know what happens in an electrical storm?” says a disgruntled man holding a baby.

An uproar of individuals all begin to bicker among each other. My father is eyeing me and I know I should be controlling the situation, somehow. It'd be nice if we had any actual information we could give them.

“Everyone calm down,” I tell the group, “We’ll hand out more information as it comes. For right now, please be reassured the staff is working swiftly into figuring out what is going on.”

Meanwhile, Chiaki-kun has been standing off in the distance in the corner of the lobby trying to remain invisible. He’s looking at his phone and biting his lip in thought. He eyes me and beckons me to come over silently.

Bowing, “Excuse me ladies and gentlemen.”

Heading over, Chiaki-kun looks over at me.

“What’s going on?” I asked him.

“Are you a hundred percent sure you didn’t piss off some ancient ghost? Maybe back in Japan, ghosts exist, because you’re not going to believe this...and I'm about to piss my pants in fear!” he exclaims.

How is this man older than me?

“Here in the Philippines we use our hands to eat, traditionally called boodle fight.” my father announces, “Mangaon ta, in Cebuano, that means 'Let’s eat'. And please give a warm welcome to Lando, our guest entertainer for our lunch!”

Lando bows to my father who exits off the stage and he smiles at the crowd.

Today, I am going to share a bit of that culture, singing traditional songs with my pet hawk Kazu, and my humble guitar. For the adventurous types, you may come up to say hello later on. For now, I will share with you a medley of my favorite Cebuano songs, and then I'll be taking song requests from you all!”
