"The World has no End"

By Famous Philosopher Quintin Kuatillian

This famous phrase has been the reality that has limited the land humans have been able to settle. The world is like a wasteland, full of deserts, badlands, little shelter, and only a few springs of water. The land goes on for eternity in all directions and all explorers would either return to one of the few livable towns or die out in the expanse. Then everything changed once a strange building was discovered out in the middle of nowhere, this was the first train station.

Since that fateful day centuries ago life forever changed. Two sets of infinite railway tracks were set side by side, allowing for trains to travel in either direction. Whenever a train leaves another is soon to take its place within a day or two. No one knows how this system came to be but humanity was soon to take advantage of it to travel the world. Pretty much wherever there is a train station a new settlement would pop up and various people would scout the nearby area for places to settle and riches to collect. Humanity continued to expand through these train stations and have stretched out across the expanse.

"The World is the Rail-line"

By Railway Entrepreneur Jonathan Steamholt

The tracks never bend and the only way known to revisit a location is to take the other line to head back the way you came. Philosophers and Scientist have concluded that the world is a flat, never ending plain that goes on for eternity. As it is infinite, it is unknown if the railways have an end themselves and as yet they appear to go on forever. As a result most people tend to stay in or near one train station for most of their life and only travel a few stations at most before heading back home. Of course not everyone is content to stay in one spot and constantly move from station to station for adventure and excitement. Such people are often called Riders.

The roleplay follows several riders as they travel by train across the world. Dropping by various locations for exploration and interaction. The world is a Western type setting with guns, train heists with potential light steampunk and mystical elements. Due to its nature of traveling the rail line there would be few permanent fixtures as unless there is a need to head back for story reasons, each location will be left behind after its story has been told and the characters move on to the next station. Because of this there will be a log section would be used to keep track of locations along the railway sort of like the fashioning of a map of sorts and major story points.

World Information

Common Knowledge: The world is flat and infinite. Most of the world is, unfortunately, rather desolate with only a few fresh springs.

Water: Probably one of the most precious resources out there, no settlement can last long without a supply of water. One of the most lucrative jobs out there is water prospecting. Anyone who finds such a location can quickly sell the information and make a small fortune as settlers are quick to move in and create a new town wherever there is water.

The Stations: All stations have at least one train bay for maintenance, they are also the only places where there is a bit of extra track which can allow other trains to pass by if needed. The stations are generally run by Steamholt Transportation and they employ many people in various positions. Because trains in general can never go back the way they came, train crews are constantly changing trains, often employed on a kind of train loop where they travel a station or two before hopping on the other track and heading back to home base. Woe to anyone who leaves anything on the train as you will never see that item again unless you get back on that same train before it leaves.

Weapons: Weapons can be hard to come by as unless you are at a station where there are profitable mines around, supplies will often be quite limited. Resources are often scarce so frugality is the key to survival. Most travelers have at least a knife on them, especially since it has so many uses aside from fighting and doesn't need ammunition. Guns are expensive as is ammo so careful maintenance is key to keeping a gun in shape for a long time. Handguns, like revolvers are the most common type of gun since they are easier to carry, maintain, and tend to be the cheapest to buy and make. Rifles are hard to come by so usually only the rich, the lucky, or those with a family weapon tend to have one. Because of their longer range and firepower they are often seen as great prizes to be pilfered and looted.

Would it be fair to assume that 'Station' would be synonymous with 'City', and with smaller towns East or West of the Stations, feeding them water/materials for either the Station's population or for trade North or South along the line?

I'm planning a character that pops around using a crossbow or a bow. They also will be suffering from HGH deficiency, so they will be naturally very short but otherwise normal. (3'4" or so in height.) I haven't decided yet if they will crossbow or bow

@Lotrix Molick If I can throw in my 2 cents...if they're that short, go with a crossbow. Any bow that would fit someone that short would be really weak.

I kind of like this for a concept.

Hes a preacher, for going guns to speak the words of peace, of unity, of god. A mountain of a man who services the church cars of a train, speaking the gospel. Naturally he has had a horrible backstory of a gruesome train robber himself and so he must be armed with a rail hammer, ready for when his past comes back to claim its price in blood. Seeking redemption he lives a life of piety and offers care and protection to his flocks.

He might have a son he travels with to add another layer of depth.

Oooph, I actually started writing up a priest for the Holy Church of Paradise, which is basically a church that trains its members to be bounty hunters, so they can pay their bills as they travel along the train track to find Paradise.

Basically collecting orphans from other stations, turning them into a bunch of holy men who murder sinners in order to survive in the west, while moving from station to station, asking for donations, and making it their goal to find something that might not exist.

Could be interesting to see different kinds of faith colliding.

Or, the bow could be a composite reflex, thus being compact and powerful. The biggest issue is that one other character wanted an engineer type, so I am worried about overlap if my character is a mechanical weapons engineer to develop their crossbow.

Also, a big consideration is whether refined metal or good wood is easier to come by. With low quality wood and average metal access, crossbow edges out bow. With high quality wood or high quality metal with access to proper adhesives, then composite reflex wins due to quality allowing for high, compact draw weight and thus offering nearly the same power for a faster shot. Crossbows are more durable overall and have half the weight on their ammo. The problem is rate of fire as well as how the character would get the draw full.

What type of armor is common in this era? If armor is at best infrequently used, then the crossbow would require far less "power" behind it as period mechanics could allow an inbuilt pull mechanism to reduce fatigue and increase speed.

@Reflection

Neato. Let me think about it and see if theres another role. But it would be interesting since my guy would be more of preaching peace cooperation and forgiveness. The face of probably a less action oriented view on religion.

  • Name: Casey
  • Appearance: uploads1.yugioh.com/card_images/1139/…
  • Gender:M
  • Equipment: Decks of cards, throwing knives, dice, roulette wheel (with carrying case), poker chips.
  • Abilities:
Sleight of Hand: Using quick hand movements he can hide, produce and conceal small objects.
Silver Tongue: He's a smooth talker with a knack for manipulating people.
Knife/Small Object Throwing: Can throw small objects with accuracy. His favourite projectile is knives but anything he can grab will do.
  • The Story: Casey was born to wealthy parents. His father was a notorious water prospector whose work had led to the creation of several towns. There was a rumour that he was killing other prospectors and stealing their claims, though these were never confirmed and he was never charged. Casey lived a life in luxury until the day his father died, ironically enough to tainted water. His mother lived off of his father's savings, though as the money went dry and their quality of life went on the decline she found herself working unsavoury jobs and barely scraping by.

By the age of 16, Casey yearned for the life of luxury once again and set off on his own, like his father did at his age, to make a fortune for himself. Casey did not have the knack for 'finding' water his father had, but he had other skills. He knew people, he knew what people wanted and he knew how to get it from them. So he started his own travelling casino; playing cards with passengers, hosting impromptu roulette parties, and selling gambling paraphernalia to otherwise upstanding businesses.
  • Quirks:Absolutely cannot hold his liquor.

@Lotrix MolickFair point. Over in the Interest Check, IceHeart said the guns are as advanced as far as brass cases and manual repeating arms (bolt/level/pump-action), so my *guess* would be that armour would be archaic/uncommon...but don't take my word on that.

So, I may have gone a bit overboard. I ended up creating a character that might be a bit too much for the setting, but since I figure the idea is more based around character interactions, a priest with a holy mission might be interesting.

Not all stations are created equal, but in general since they are so important to the surrounding land, cities and towns do tend to naturally spring up around them since freight is so important. Then of course other towns and cities wherever there is water or sometimes an important natural resource like iron or trees. If for some reason a town did not develop around the station itself, perhaps too far away from a stable water source for other reason, usually there is at least a saloon, hotel, and of course places for the train staff.

As water is hard to come by, big trees and good wood can also be rather difficult to obtain. Often times stone and brick tend to be the construction material of choice as it is much easier to come by.

The closest you will probably get to armor would be things like hardened hides and leather. Of course a lot of people use knives and the like so something to protect against that would be good, but since guns are a thing, mobility and ease of wear is much more important. Course there are exceptions to every rule but as good metal can be hard to come by not very many have any types of 'armor'.

I think I might make a water prospector instead. Someone that searches the wastes and follows the signs for watering wells. A bit of a scientist type. Maybe some doctoring. I'll try to work on it tomorrow.
